PMP Exam Certification in 2 Week Illusion - Facts, Fiction & Fallacies The idea that you can become PMP certified in just 2 weeks is unrealistic and FALSE. The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a rigorous credential that validates your knowledge, experience, and skills in project management. Here's why the 2-week timeframe is misleading: Experience Requirement: To be eligible for the PMP exam, you typically need 36 months of documented project management experience with at least 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and an additional 35 hours of project management education. That counts for something! A LOT! Knowledge Breadth: The PMP exam covers a broad range of project management processes, tools, and techniques outlined in the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). Grasping this comprehensive body of knowledge takes time and dedicated study. While some people may pass the PMP exam with fewer than the recommended study hours, it's not a common scenario. Most PMP aspirants require several months of focused preparation to solidify their understanding and develop test-taking strategies. Here are some realistic expectations for PMP certification: Preparation Time: Dedicated PMP aspirants typically invest 200-300 hours studying for the exam. This may involve taking a PMP prep course, reading the PMBOK Guide, completing practice exams, and attending bootcamps. Overall Timeline: Factoring in the experience requirement and study time, realistically, achieving PMP certification can take anywhere from 6 months to a year or more. If you're considering pursuing the PMP certification, don't be discouraged by the time commitment. The PMP credential is highly valued in the project management field and can significantly enhance your career prospects. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pmpradio/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pmpradio/support

Welcome back to "Projetez-vous, Today, we're going to explore the captivating world of project managers – the maestros behind the scenes who conduct the symphony of projects. Whether you're already an experienced project manager, thinking about taking on the role, or just plain curious, stick around. I've got some interesting points for you. But before we dig into the project manager's role, let's answer the simple question: What is a project manager? Well, think of them as the ultimate pilot guiding a project from its inception to completion. But hold on, there's more to it! According to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide Version 7, a global guide and framework for project management, published by PMI. The role of a project manager has evolved. They're not just supervisors anymore; they're also coaches and mentors. PMBOK Version 7 brought some game-changing updates, stressing the human aspect in project management. As a coach, the project manager actively develops their team's skills, identifying strengths and weaknesses and offering guidance for improvement. Our project manager is also a mentor, sharing experience, knowledge, and best practices to help the team overcome challenges. They inspire confidence, encourage learning, and promote professional growth. It's a shift towards recognizing the importance of interpersonal skills and leadership alongside the technical aspects of project management. LINKS: https://tinyurl.com/pmbokprinciples https://tinyurl.com/pmbokdomains The 7th edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide symbolizes a noteworthy pivot in the sphere of project management. It embraces a universally applicable approach, significantly emphasizing the role of interpersonal skills, principles, and soft skills in project management. The guide posits that people play an essential part in determining the success or failure of a project, and it promotes a natural logic approach to managing projects. Additionally, this edition is strongly influenced by agile concepts and subtle details, which mirrors the escalating prominence of agile methodologies in the realm of project management. Yet, despite the introduction of these new perspectives in the 7th edition, the 6th edition remains a pertinent resource because of its comprehensive focus on predictive or traditional project management. The 6th edition lays a solid foundation for understanding conventional project management practices and methodologies. To reconcile the changes between the two editions and merge the traditional and agile methodologies, the Project Management Institute (PMI) has released the "Process Groups: A Practice Guide." This guide serves as a compass for practitioners, helping them traverse the complexities of project management. It's important to note that a robust understanding of traditional project management, which is defined by the five process groups, 10 knowledge areas, and 49 processes, remains crucial. Even though the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam is based on the exam content outline, this holistic understanding is key to allowing professionals to grasp the broader context of project management. It empowers them to appropriately apply the principles and practices to different project scenarios and requirements. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolving dynamics of project management, I strongly encourage you to delve into not just the 6th and 7th editions of the PMBOK Guide, but also into the Agile Practice Guide and its valuable content. This will facilitate an expanded knowledge base that provides enormous value, enabling professionals to adeptly navigate through both predictive and agile project management methodologies. Investing time and effort in understanding these resources will help practitioners shape a balanced and versatile skill set that goes beyond the constraints of a single PMBOK Guide edition. This wide-ranging viewpoint and deep comprehension of project management principles and practices will assuredly boost one's efficiency in the field and contribute significantly to the success of their projects. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/projectmanagement/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/projectmanagement/support

My friend Joe Launi has been in the project management business for 35 years. He's been a team member, project manager, and trainer. And if you ask him the secret to project management success he'll tell you it revolves around communication. He'll tell you there's more to it than that. But he'll also tell you every project challenge can be worsened by poor communication or managed by good communication. In this episode, Joe talks about getting on the same project page from the trenches, not the textbooks. Yes PMs need to know how to build a work breakdown structure and a dependency laden schedule. But there will be no getting on any project management same page without skills such as listening, asking good questions, being humble, and growing your team. Skills not unique to project management. Here are a few of my favorite ahh-ha! moments: 3:11 - Did you make the bed? Getting on the same page as a communication challenge. 8:20 - I'm not vaccinated: COVID, subcontractors and seeking to understand, then to be understood. 20:48 - Team rules rule... if the team writes them. 30:09 - The Project Management Body of Knowledge v7: Is your PM a servant-leader? 41:06 - Leaders are responsible for results, not for knowing everything. As a leader, can you get out of your own way to let people work? 49:31 - The story of the client who loved that his software ran faster without having to ask - but did have to ask why the other $10M of software he bought didn't run faster, too.

The Everyday PM: Project Management Principles for Your Everyday Life
Since 1996, PMI has set the standard of terminology and guidelines for the project management profession. It's been four years since the Project Management Institute (PMI) published the The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Guide – Sixth Edition. Deemed as one of the most thorough and detailed editions of them all, the Sixth Edition was rigid, outlining the project lifecycle complete with all of the EEFs (Enterprise Environmental Factors) and OPAs (Organizational Process Assets) that fed into and out of each process group. Project managers would be tested on this and much more to be deemed certified project management professionals. However, in the last four years, the project management industry has seen tremendous growth. According to PMI, the profession's labor force is expected to expand by 33% globally through 2027, creating approximately 22 million jobs worldwide. We have also seen the emergence of hybrid project approaches that capture both agile and waterfall methodologies. With the demand for project managers growing faster than the demand for workers in other occupations over the next 10 years, it is by no surprise that PMI deemed it time to release The PMBOK® Guide – Seventh Edition to capture this rapid change. In this week's podcast, Christina, Brian and I breakdown The PMBOK® Guide – Seventh Edition and give our thoughts on the changes. To see a quick rundown of what's changed in the Seventh Edition, check out my video on 7 Facts about The PMBOK® Seventh Edition. Sustainable Project Management Insights One of my favorite voices on how to lead projects is Rich Maltzman. Rich contributed to A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) Seventh Edition in the areas of sustainability and value delivery. In this episode, Rich talks about what sustainable project management is (and isn't). Perhaps more importantly, he talks about what we can do at our level, especially when we feel we don't have much influence to make a difference. And Rich shares some project and career lessons that he's gleaned over the years. It's a great discussion with a guy I consider a friend. On today’s show we’re talking about a single word. The problem with this single word is that it’s ambiguous. We often think that we know the language and what it means. But the truth is unless you’re really clear on exactly what you mean, very simple words can lead you down a dead end path. Today’s show is focused on a simple word that has four letters. When projects run into difficulty, the culprit is often a failure in the plan. This year, in the year 2020 with all of the global dislocations that have befallen our economies most business leaders would bristle at the notion that the plan was to blame for the difficulties being experienced. We’ve had a global pandemic. We’ve had government mandated shutdowns. We’ve been ordered by our governments not to conduct business. How can you sit on you high horse and say that the plan was to blame? I heard a business leader tell me in the past week, he said “We had a plan, and the plan couldn’t be executed.” The Project Management Institute is the globally recognized leader in project management certification. If you’re going to be a professional project manager, you’re going to take a bunch of courses and at the end take a lengthy exam. Finally you’re a professional project manager. The PMI has a lengthy publication called the Project Management Body of Knowledge. This document breaks down project management into 5 distinct process groups, 10 knowledge areas, and 49 distinct processes. The project plan itself has an outline of 10 chapters. According to PMI, a plan is a formal, approved document used to guide both project execution and project control. A plan is a deliverable. It’s a document which you can point to. It’s a noun. Therein lies the problem. When you have a plan, then the work to produce the plan is done. When you think that the plan is a noun, you completely miss the fact that the word plan is also a verb. A verb is an action word in most languages. You can conjugate the verb. When you think of the plan as a noun, it often has a finite end-point. The plan is complete, it’s done. We now have a plan. We obviously don’t want to do an incomplete job of planning, no more than we want to do an incomplete job of anything. In order to achieve excellence, things need to be taken to completion. But plans are different. Plans, despite our ideals are never done. They’re continually being pushed off track by forces. I may have a plan to sail the ship from New York to Gibraltar. I plot the course based on the direction I need to go. But there’s wind, there is current, there are local waves that can instantaneously turn the ship so that from one second to the next it’s not facing the intended direction. You have to always be adjusting course. In fact, you are almost always off course. There are a few miniscule instants in time when the ship is actually on course. The rest of the time it’s off course, trying to get back on course. Once you get out on the water, the weather you thought was going to be part of your journey changes. You may have to take a detour of 1,000 miles in order to avoid that hurricane that changed direction. You see, in order to be useful in the real world, the word plan is a verb first and a noun second. The folks at PMI are great. But they’re academic. They’ve studied project management about as deeply as it is possible to do so. We see a verb being more empowering than the noun.
Introduction to Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide by Ashraf Ali
Kimi Hirotsu Ziemski is a project management facilitator and a coach at KSP Partnership. Leadership driven project management is the focus of Kimi's career and success. She has published several books on "Women in Leadership" and "Impact of Culture on Teams' Productivity". She has also contributed to the 4th edition of Project Management Body of Knowledge(PMI). Using tools from multiple project management approaches, her enthusiasm for learning led her to an interesting discovery. The most effective project managers are effective because of how they lead the teams and work within their stakeholder communities. This means being invested in and focused on the leadership aspect of the efforts enhances the team's management of the technical aspects of getting projects to the finish line. In this episode, you will learn: 1. What it takes to achieve success as a business owner after leaving a corporate career behind 2. Why leadership is so important in project management world and how women are succeeding in this area of expertise 3. What questions do you need to ask yourself before investing into a business idea
3.) BEDÜRFNISSE VERSTEHEN (Validierung unserer Hypothesen) - Wie ist Dein Blick auf unser Vorhaben? - Was brauchst Du von uns? 4.) Play Now: Cynthia Dionisio, Mike Griffiths and Stephen Townsend At the Project Management Institute (PMI)® Global Conference 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, I had the opportunity to attend two workshops to help in the development of A Guide to The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) -- Seventh edition. Yes, you read that right: Seventh Edition. And here is what PMI® wrote about the workshop: PMBOK® Guide – The Next Generation: An Innovation Working Session Join us for an innovation workshop to develop concepts for the next generation of the PMBOK® Guide. Explore current thinking to ensure the next version encompasses the full spectrum of project management approaches. Then actively participate in shaping the content through a series of innovation discussions and exercises. Bring your expertise, ideas and energy to collaborate with your colleagues in building a robust and resilient project management body of knowledge. The workshop was led by Cynthia Dionisio, Mike Griffiths, and Stephen Townsend. Cyndi and Mike are the co-leads for the new PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition and Stephen represents PMI. And in addition to attending the workshop, I also got the opportunity to sit down with them and learn what we can expect from the new guide. (My best guess is that it will be published sometime in 2021). In the interview we talk about the move from process-based to principles-based standards, what will happen to the domains and knowledge-areas, how the next guide will cover the entire delivery spectrum, why it will be much shorter than the current edition, and what each member of the team hopes that the seventh edition will be able to achieve.

Another brilliant mind joins us today on the Global Medical Device Podcast. Peter Sebelius is the founder of Gantus.com and today we'll talk medical device product development and project management. Peter is a certified PM and has vast experience in the industry and extensive knowledge of medical device standards. He is also a member of the joint working groups on ISO 13485 and Iso 14971. Today we'll talk about lean management and agile as it applies to the development of medical devices. Can you be lean and compliant at the same time? “Medical device product development is far from a straight line.” - Jon Speer Knowing when to turn on the design controls is a delicate balance. Design controls should be a framework - they don't necessarily need to stifle the creative process. It doesn't have to be restrictive. “It was never intended in product management or design control to be changing technical solutions fundamentally while you're in that process.” - Peter Sebelius Today we'll talk about: - Can you be lean? - Finding the right balance with design controls - Using “TBDs” - Project Management and Design Controls as ‘best practices' - “Guide for the Project Management Body of Knowledge” - “Shared responsibility is no responsibility” “You can't write something down that you haven't thought through well.” - Peter Sebelius Peter suggests that project managers should learn more about qualitative management and regulatory affairs. Make sure you know what's good enough. Peter provides online training on risk management, project management and design control. You can find him and learn more at gantus.com.

Modeling is a very important activity for any product development team – yet this important work is often overlooked. Even the teams who embrace modeling don’t always understand how best to leverage its value, choose which models are appropriate, or pair models for obtaining the greatest impacts. Join me as I have the opportunity to interview Greta Blash – a longtime community contributor in the project/program management space - as we discuss using models to create group memory.Greta shares with us how product development teams are changing up how they use modeling or should be. Where once models were the itemized deliverable requiring much rigor, formality, and adherence to modeling language syntax – today adaptive approaches to delivery are using models as the "means to the ends". Come listen in as Greta shares with us how she uses modeling to facilitate group discussions, set scope, elicit requirements, validate understanding for what the product team will build and of course to create group memory.About our guest:Greta Blash has extensive experience as an executive and consulting IT professional, both domestically and internationally. Her areas of experience include program management, project management, agile/adaptive development, business analysis, customer relationship management, and business intelligence. She believes in using a blended approach for successful project results incorporating multiple approaches, competencies and techniques. In addition to her PMP certification, she also holds program management (PgMP), agile (PMI-ACP) and business analysis (PMI-PBA) certifications from Project Management Institute (PMI).Greta has taught project and program management, business analysis, and agile foundation and certification courses worldwide for the last ten years. She has published numerous articles and blogs on these topics, and has served as a global team participant in the creation of “What’s New in PMBOK® 6th Edition – An In-Depth Comparison.”She is a frequent presenter at various PMI and IIBA chapter events and conferences at the local, regional and global levels. Greta has contributed as a Subject Matter Expert reviewer for The PMI Guide to Business Analysis, PMI’s Benefits Realization Management: A Practice Guide, and reviewer for A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Sixth Edition, the Standard for Program Management Fourth Edition, and PMI’s Practice Standard for Scheduling - Third Edition.

ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● LOUIS ALDERMAN NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. This is our chance to meet and talk with you about project management certification, as well as all the issues that matter to you as a professional project manager. I'm Nick Walker, and with me are the guys who can rightfully be called project management experts. They have the answers to your questions: Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. Plus, we are overflowing with experts today. With us, Louis Alderman, the manager of curriculum development at Velociteach. I guess that's why we have a round table in our studio instead of a square one because we'd run out of corners otherwise. Louis, great to have you here with us. LOUIS ALDERMAN: Thank you. NICK WALKER: Let's just start off with you. You know, tell us a little bit about yourself. When did you join the Velociteach team? LOUIS ALDERMAN: I came to Velociteach in 2005. I was a customer of Velociteach and a firm believer in the process of Velociteach because it worked for me. NICK WALKER: Aha. LOUIS ALDERMAN: So that was my first exposure to Velociteach. And the longer I've been with the organization, the team, the better and better I feel about it. So it's just been a growth. BILL YATES: Louis, you said you were a customer. Who was your instructor? LOUIS ALDERMAN: I was privileged to have Andy Crowe as my instructor. NICK WALKER: How about that? LOUIS ALDERMAN: A young man at the time that I was very impressed with. He had a lot going. And so... BILL YATES: Back in the day. LOUIS ALDERMAN: Yeah. He really represented Velociteach very well. BILL YATES: That's great. NICK WALKER: Well, so you've been in the trenches yourself. Tell us a little bit about that, maybe some of your experience. LOUIS ALDERMAN: Well, I started directly out of college working for Hewlett-Packard Company. That was my first employer. And I worked for HP for almost 29 years. And then I took an early retirement and within the same week went to work for Velociteach. So it was sort of a planned project transition, so it worked well for me. At HP I had various lives and started off in technical support engineering, where I actually had my first tour of training in education by developing training for other engineers on our products and how to support them. That was about 25 percent of my career at HP. I spent another 25 percent in sales, enjoying going out and visiting and selling to other computer companies at the time. The second half of my career at HP I had tours of duty as a business process analyst. I was an IT project manager about 30 percent of my experience at HP. And then I served about another 10 percent there in the project management office, working with portfolio management and process design. So it was a great run. And I'm right where I'm supposed to be. NICK WALKER: Excellent. Which is right here with us. We thank you so much for being here with us. And we will see you from time to time again, I'm sure, on this round table. LOUIS ALDERMAN: Looking forward to it. NICK WALKER: Hey, let's jump right in. One of the things about this podcast, at least for me, is that almost every time we meet, I tend to learn a new word, a new phrase, a new concept, sometimes a new abbreviation or acronym. And one of those is the main topic of today's podcast. It is – drum roll, please – the PMBOK Guide, PMBOK, P-M-B-O-K. And that to me is kind of a mysterious one. So Andy, this is my educational moment; okay? What is the PMBOK Guide? ANDY CROWE: Well, it's a very important document for us, Nick, as project managers. It's an acronym, and it actually stands for a guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge. So it's a book. And it's a big, thick book. It's an ANSI standard. And I believe it is the only ANSI standard for project management out there ri...
Another brilliant mind joins us today on the Global Medical Device Podcast. Peter Sebelius is the founder of Gantus.com and today we’ll talk medical device product development and project management. Peter is a certified PM and has vast experience in the industry and extensive knowledge of medical device standards. He is also a member of the joint working groups on ISO 13485 and Iso 14971. Today we’ll talk about lean management and agile as it applies to the development of medical devices. Can you be lean and compliant at the same time? “Medical device product development is far from a straight line.” - Jon Speer Knowing when to turn on the design controls is a delicate balance. Design controls should be a framework - they don’t necessarily need to stifle the creative process. It doesn’t have to be restrictive. “It was never intended in product management or design control to be changing technical solutions fundamentally while you’re in that process.” - Peter Sebelius Today we’ll talk about: - Can you be lean? - Finding the right balance with design controls - Using “TBDs” - Project Management and Design Controls as ‘best practices’ - “Guide for the Project Management Body of Knowledge” - “Shared responsibility is no responsibility” “You can’t write something down that you haven’t thought through well.” - Peter Sebelius Peter suggests that project managers should learn more about qualitative management and regulatory affairs. Make sure you know what’s good enough. Peter provides online training on risk management, project management and design control. You can find him and learn more at gantus.com.
Most folks studying for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam are unaware of the framework that lives just below the surface of the exam. This same framework of domains and tasks exists in many other types of situation/scenario-based certification exams.By considering the very recent changes and trends in the PM profession, the Project Management Institute (PMI) likes to keep their exams current. They respin the exam every few years. It’s easy to do the respin when the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), that is the basis for the exam, changes every four to five years (the next PMBOK update will occur in 2017). But what happens in between (like now)? The PMI calls this respin a Role Delineation Study (RDS) change. Without changing the underlying PMBOK edition-base of the PMP exam, they keep the exam current. In a nutshell, it’s nothing more than changing the mix of the scenarios. The changed domains and tasks are actually part of the scenarios. As I mentioned, the scenarios in the exam relate to a specific task-based situation that a PM could run into in the real world. Those scenarios outline something going on in one or more of the five Process Groups (PGs); Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing. These are the domains of the exam. Each of the many exam scenarios, requires you to figure-out what needs to happen to answer the questions that come after the scenario. That ‘what needs to happen’ part is/are the task(s) associated with the specific domain in the scenario’s premise. There is a science involved in each of those scenarios. For example, the set of activities involved in something like:Participate in the development of the project charter by compiling and analyzing gathered information in order to ensure that project stakeholders are in agreement on its elements.is considered a specific task that an exam aspirant should know how to accomplish. Each domain contains many tasks. All of those tasks are put together to build the scenarios and the questions in the exam. They also changed the domain mix (the number of scenarios/questions from each domain) by a single percentage point; taking from Executing and adding to Closing. So that’s all there is to it. They just take tasks that any exam aspirant should know anyway and mix them up a little differently. See http://www.pmi.org/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pmp-certification-exam-outline.ashxfor the actual list of the changes. There is no significantly new knowledge. They make it sound like there is, but when you really look at the ‘cross-cutting knowledge and skills’ required for the new tasks, there is really nothing new that you will be questioned on. Those skill are listed in the PMI page cited just above here. Once you read it you’ll agree there is nothing you will not already know. The Fifth Edition of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge will remain the base of the PMP exam for another couple years. The revised exam transitions in November 2015. If you were to compare a pre-RDS exam and a post-RDS exam, you would not be able to find the differences. So, don’t sweat that cut-over date. Just keep on studying and good luck on your exam.Regards,Dana SaffordVisit us at pmlessonslearned.com

How can you develop a more effective project charter? Come up with more accurate cost and time estimates? Identify risks? Project Management Institute (PMI) says we should use expert judgment. Their point is that you can develop better plans and estimates if you tap into the wisdom of those with established expertise. Makes sense, right?
