In this week's Quick Fire Friday episode, Michael interviews Keryn Nylander, a Strategic Communications, Media, Brand, and Public Relations Specialist, and Principal of Nylander Consulting. She's based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Keryn is a former journalist that covered print and electronic media until she decided to transfer to the field of public relations. Now she has a consultancy firm that aids her clients' public relations. A business has three vital parts: advertising, marketing, and public relations. Like the other two, public relations is essential in a business and shouldn't be treated as the lesser of the two. Keryn specializes in that field, giving strategic communications to small-medium business owners, refining their Social License, and preparing businesses to withstand any drama when the chips are down.  According to Keryn, what she'd recommend small-medium business owners do on Monday is, “You should have a crisis comms plan; what are you going to do? If something doesn't go right?” a risk management strategy to maintain the excellent reputation of your brand.  This Cast Covers: Who's Keryn Nylander? The early days of Keryn Nylander's career. How did Michael and Keryn meet? The cruciality of understanding how media works. Three areas that you can use to promote your business. Media training and strategic communications advice. The importance of communicating. Social License is a really powerful tool. Building the values and the culture first. Having foresight of a bad situation. How Public Relations Can Benefit Real Estate Agents-with Paige Dungan- EP 190   Today on the Lab Coat Agents Podcast, host Jeff Pfitzer is joined by Paige Dungan who is a Public Relations Specialist and Co-Founder of The Sisu Agency. She shares how local media is always looking for experts they can feature when business topics become relevant for their audience and she gives great advice on who to contact and how to add value so you become the go-to local expert on real estate. Tune in to get all the best advice! Episode Highlights: Jeff introduces Paige Dungan who used to run Success Magazine. Paige Dungan shares where she started out in college and her entrepreneurial desires. Paige jumped into the first PR hire for Dickey's Barbecue when they started to franchise. That experience taught her so many lessons that she needed and showed her that she really wanted to do PR for her career. As a marketing manager, Paige took an entirely different role with Success Magazine. She could see the relational piece missing. Nobody wanted to ask the big names to get more involved. PR is connecting, especially connecting those who don't have the confidence to ask and the time and heart to do it. Paige shares how Tristan helped her think well about her naivety going into entrepreneurship for the second time after her first failed attempt. There is a success mindset that you have to find  Jeff talks about his experience meeting Tristan and how what some people may think is annoying was actually so needed and led to them becoming business partners. Sometimes you just have to keep trying until you're told not to.  Jeff asks Paige to talk about overcoming struggle. For her, it was a two and a half year process postpartum. She talks about what it was like to deliver a child at the very beginning of COVID in all the uncertainty. Paige explains what it was like to go from being a high performer to not being able to get out of bed and how hard it was to not show up as a wife, mom, sister, daughter, etc. Jeff mentions how relatable the topic is and asks Paige to give advice to those who are going through something similar or may go through in the future. Society minimizes the time it should take for us to process and go through things but the reality is life doesn't work that way. Jeff talks about the pros and cons of compartmentalization in both personal life and business. Oftentimes people don't immediately recognize something wrong with them because so many are just moving one hundred miles per hour or they try to get busier to distract themselves which just temporarily masks the pain but does not lead to long term improvement or recovery. In PR there are so many emotions, relationships, and nuances. Jeff asks Paige to talk about the difference in the PR that is costly and the free options. Why do real estate agents need PR? How can you be seen as the authority with value in your community as a real estate agent? “If anyone DMs you to pay for PR, do not do it”, says Paige. Journalists look for content and knowledge, what can you provide? How do you find reporters? Paige shares the tips and tricks. Paige explains the roles of those who work for TV shows and news outlets and who it is you need to get in touch with. Paige shares how real estate agents can be great at their own PR. 3 Key Points: There are many challenges and rewards with entrepreneurial endeavors. Paige talks through the limiting factors that hold many people back and how she has personally overcome them. Many people especially in recent times have gone through a lot of hardship and mental health is a very real topic to approach head on. Paige explains the importance and how to get through recovery. The more that you can rationalize what will happen with your outcome, the more sanity you will experience. Paige discusses the difference between PR and marketing. PR is your story, your connection, your ability to be set apart, and to be seen as the authority with value.       Resources Mentioned: Lab Coat Agents | Website | Facebook | Facebook Group | Twitter | Instagram  Jeff Pfitzer   | Instagram | LinkedIn | Twitter Follow Up Boss (Sponsor) Chime (Sponsor) Z buyer (sponsor)   Paige Dungan: paige@thesisuagency.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/paigedungan/ https://www.instagram.com/paigeofpositivity/

"My wife calls my career path schizophrenic, started as a DJ (in high school), moved to television news (won and Emmy at age 18), jumped over to government service as a leader for the Attorney General, then into public relations, a startup (called DirecTV), sports with PGA Tour, NASCAR, NFL and now helping manage a global agency with more than 100 offices. They key was looking for careers that were thrilling, intriguing and challenging. I'm always amazed that kids in first grade know exactly what they want to be when they grow up and by high school no one seems to know. My theory is that we create pressure and a fear of ridicule in ways that teenagers stop sharing their dream jobs and fall into a default response of "I don't know what I want to do." I encourage these students to really dig in and chase the thing they are most interested in pursuing." -Patrick Milanhttps://tunheim.com/Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thewhyinetwork)

What is Public Relations?  We had a great conversation with Kimberley, who answered that question.Kimberley and I (LaurieAnn) met on Instagram.  I was interested in what she was doing, because being a writer, and having a passion for it, I was intrigued by someone who was working towards building her business in Public Relations and also from my Town.Kimberley shares that she was laid off from her job as  Public Relations Specialist for an Agricultural company.  As COVID hit, she decided to start out on her own.  It was an impressive tactic, not because of taking advantage of the time allotted due to COVID, as many out there have done; it is because she knew her niche going into her new venture.  This is something most new entrepreneurs struggle with or are not even aware of the importance of.  Starting the business was not about offering her business expertise to just anyone.  She is focussing on the agricultural community because that is what she knows best.  And she knows it well.Kimberley does emphasize that she is absolutely capable of providing her service in any industry, knowing her talent for writing, and relationship building, and learning about her clients to tell "their story", however, her passion is in agriculture.  She also states that having lived in several countries brings even more credibility to her knowledge in this field. We had a bit of fun speaking to the pride of having the longest Mayor in office in Canada in Milton, Ontario, and the value of being involved with the Milton Chamber of Commerce and other networking organizations to help build the connections. You can reach Kimberley by visiting her site https://www.kimcoylecontent.comMore about Kimberley:"For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about communications and storytelling. It was evident that my future should focus on spreading awareness of people's stories and their positive messages.Since receiving my Public Relations diploma from Conestoga College, I have worked in public relations/communications departments, primarily in the agricultural sector. It was there that I was fortunate to hone my skills and tell the stories of the hardworking individuals throughout the supply chain who ensure our food safely reaches our plates.  After accumulating 10+ years of experience in this sector (8 of those being at Ontario Pork), I branched out in 2019 to begin a freelance communications career. It was rewarding to diversify my skills to write for food production companies and the audio-visual industry, as well as present in schools. In July 2020, I decided to take the leap and launch my own business Kim Coyle Content Creation.I believe it is important to never stop learning and I continue to expand my knowledge through workshops, webinars, and courses. I was a member of the Eastern Canadian Farm Writers Federation for 11 years and was on their Board of Directors from 2015-2017." What are the biggest myths about Public Relations? Why are they so far from reality? What is PR exactly? How do I make my PR firm’s job easier? Jessica Rafaeil and Lisa Buyer answer all your questions in this new episode of Social PR Secrets. From understanding what PR professionals actually do to how press releases work, Jessica and Lisa cover it all. In this episode of the Social PR Secrets Podcast, host Lisa Buyer talks with Jessica Rafaeil, a Public Relations Specialist. While the two experts work together at The Buyer Group, Jess also owns her own firm, More Than Press. They met at the University of Florida, where Lisa was Jessica’s professor. They bonded over her senior project and her understanding of PR as a complex industry. Public Relations is the business of persuading people and developing connections to help brands. While that seems pretty straightforward, PR can take many different avenues and is often misunderstood. Listen to the podcast to find out what the top misconceptions about PR are and why they are completely false. Myth #1: PR Is All About Press Releases When Jess starts working with brands, she always asks them what they want. A lot of the time their response is “press releases, of course.” To Lisa and Jessica, however, press releases are not the sole nor most important part of PR. While they are great and a staple for announcements or product launches, they aren’t a public relations strategy on their own. According to Jess, PR is all about creating relationships with the press and building credibility for brands. The overall strategy is much more complex and helps the press release actually serve its purpose. As such, the bulk of the work is building relationships on a day-to-day basis. PR agencies are constantly looking for opportunities for their clients. To Jess, PR is not a “next-day slam dunk.” Results will start to show months from when you start because public relations are a long play. Myth #2: PR Is The Same Thing As Advertising Lisa and Jess got a laugh out of that misconception! To them, PR is the middle child of advertising and marketing. Public relations professionals work hand in hand with those channels, but the functions they serve are completely different. When a brand is advertising, it is asking people to buy its services and products. Ads are convincing customers to trust the brand. On the other hand, PR gets someone out of the brand’s industry to tell people to buy a product. Consequently, PR has added value. Jessica cited a study showing 70% of customers would rather find a product through articles rather than ads. PR does that by not only working with journalists but with other creative methods. For example, a CEO being a guest author in a publication can also bring credibility to the brand. Lisa adds earned media can also be used as advertising if you know how to use it well. To the two professionals, one of the biggest mistakes brands make is allocating a large budget to advertising, at the expense of PR. What brands don’t know is spending ad dollars before having established credibility through PR work is rarely effective. Myth #3: Take Your Time, Journalists Can Wait
