In this week's Quick Fire Friday episode, Michael interviews Keryn Nylander, a Strategic Communications, Media, Brand, and Public Relations Specialist, and Principal of Nylander Consulting. She's based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Keryn is a former journalist that covered print and electronic media until she decided to transfer to the field of public relations. Now she has a consultancy firm that aids her clients' public relations. A business has three vital parts: advertising, marketing, and public relations. Like the other two, public relations is essential in a business and shouldn't be treated as the lesser of the two. Keryn specializes in that field, giving strategic communications to small-medium business owners, refining their Social License, and preparing businesses to withstand any drama when the chips are down.  According to Keryn, what she'd recommend small-medium business owners do on Monday is, “You should have a crisis comms plan; what are you going to do? If something doesn't go right?” a risk management strategy to maintain the excellent reputation of your brand.  This Cast Covers: Who's Keryn Nylander? The early days of Keryn Nylander's career. How did Michael and Keryn meet? The cruciality of understanding how media works. Three areas that you can use to promote your business. Media training and strategic communications advice. The importance of communicating. Social License is a really powerful tool. Building the values and the culture first. Having foresight of a bad situation. Leah Fanstone (nee Newbold) and Keryn McMaster were trailblazers for New Zealand women's offshore sailing in the 1990s. The pair notched up two laps each around the globe in the Whitbread Round the World Race, once together on the all-women's crew on board EF Education, and they tell their stories from those epic races in this episode of Broad Reach Radio. None of those circumnavigations were particularly easy, as they battled a catalogue of bad luck, breakages and broken promises, not to mention old-fashioned attitudes, but they made a big statement for women's sailing. Leah and Keryn have so many memorable stories from those races and talk about everything from mutinies and swimming in the Southern Ocean to haul sails back on board to messages from the American first lady and getting smothered by rotten fish. They also delved into various important topics around women's sailing including how female sailors can get noticed as well as last week's news that women's teams will be involved in the next America's Cup.

Mother-daughter duo Keryn & Shobha Kalyan are New Zealand born Gujarati's. Shobha's grandparents were one of the first Gujarati families to arrive in Aotearoa in the 1920s. Despite having very strong Kiwi roots, both Shobha & Keryn have grown up eating authentic Gujarati food and they learnt the art of Gujarati cooking the Indian way, by using all five senses. There were never any measurements or recipes, just an oral passing down of generations worth of food memories.Shobha has always dreamt of writing a cookbook and so the duo began the painstaking process of documenting the food they wanted to write about. In 2019, two years after they first began, “Pass It On” was released, a gift to Keryn and her two sisters and a preservation of their culture. The book is a bright and inviting collection of Gujarati recipes that have been handed down over generations. Shobha found translating the 103 recipes into simple instructions a hard task while Keryn, who had no photography experience, watched YouTube videos and painted backdrops to create the beautiful full-page images in the book.On the show I talk to them about secret recipes and why we need to uncover them. We talk about our joint Indian heritage and why it is so important for immigrant Kiwi's to have a way to access their past through their food.  Specifically, we chat about:Importance of passing on family food memoriesWhat it takes to self-publish a cook book in New ZealandHow do you get your book out there?Fundamentals of Gujarati cooking Quotes from the episode:“With self-publishing you can have full creative control of your book. So, you can choose how you want it to look and how long it took you to write it. It helped us take control of how we wanted our book to be”“When you self-publishing you're essentially creating a small business. You're doing the marketing, the distribution, hiring freelancers to fill gaps in your skills”“It was mum's dream for so long and it's been awesome being able to make it happen.”“Writing a recipe is actually really hard, thinking about all the components that's needed and then making sure we are weaving our family stories through all the dishes featured there” Pass it On Cookbook: https://www.passitoncookbook.co.nz/

If the vein on Matt's forehead wasn't strong enough to part the Red Sea before, then a series of house visits will surely prove to be the tipping point... Elly showdown is finally over meaning that Renny, Rachel and Keryn are deep-diving on all the juiciest moments from this week's special episode of the Hometown visits.   From a view of Brisbane City as unforgettable as the cringe-worthy pash-fest that followed, through to dinner with Helena's family that proves she might not be as memorable as she once thought, this is the only recap of The Bachelor you'll need to get you up to speed... After a few too many close-up pash sessions, finger-licking chocolate dates and foot rub antics, it seems that this seasons' romancing has taken a turn for the cringe. It's safe to say we're all a bit grossed out. Plus, the rivalry between Abbie and Elly has officially reached a breaking point. "It's important to use your position, however big or small that is, to effect as much good as you can." Keryn Nossal is an Executive MBA participant with a story to tell. Several stories, in fact. Keryn is the Founder and Managing Director of Fancy Films, a women-run creative content agency based in Melbourne, Australia. Inspired by the #MeToo Movement in 2018, Keryn and her team created ‘From A to Me’ as part of the #100DaysforChange project in Australia. The web-series, which recently won the International Award of Distinction at the US 2019 Communicator Awards, documents the stories of a diverse range of women breaking the glass ceiling of their industries and speaking out for those still fighting for their voice. During her visit to Cannes Lions, Keryn took some time out from the busy festival to speak to Julie at the Berlin School about creating 'From A to Me', the experience of running a women-led organisation, and the importance of using powerful voices to give others a seat at the table. You can find out more about 'From A to Me' here: https://fromatome.com.au

You can find Keryn dragging her two boys (ages 3 and 6) around the DC area most days and across the globe several times a year. Keryn has laughed at the naysayers by bringing her boys to far off lands like China, Hong Kong, Japan, Hawaii, back and forth across the USA, Mexico, Canada and Europe. Keryn loves to encourage families to take that first step out the door, the hardest step of all. You can also follow Keryn on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Jet Lag Survival Tips Coming home is always harder because when you are starting a trip, your adrenaline keeps you go. Whether you are coming or going, here are some of Keryn's top tips: Drink a lot of water because dehydration makes jet lag worse Be prepared and accept that little kids will wake at whatever time their bodies are used to waking When little kids wake up, whenever it is, get them something to eat, play for a while or have a quiet activity Be ready to be awake in the middle of the night for one to three hours with little kids, but then go through the nighttime routine again and put everyone back to bed Tag team if you are traveling with a partner! Don't plan structured activities for the first day Keep juice and fresh fruit on hand because those vitamins can reset your body but go easy on carbs because they can make you tired too When you get back, plan on a day off to reset your clocks Stay patient! It can take up to three weeks to get back to your regular schedule Plan trips at least a week or longer if possible Have snacks on hand as stores may not be open when you arrive Tips for Surviving Long Plane Trips Create a blanket tent around your child to help them get to sleep Loosen up on your screen time rules Make sure they get up every couple hours to stretch and use the bathroom Bring card games like Uno and Skip-bo Always bring extra clothes, diapers and snacks for those potential accidents! Favorite Travel Gear Keryn wears black leggings, a skirt from H&M, a fitted tank top, and a loose tank top on top of that with a black cardigan and a scarf with either flip flops or Josef Siebel ankle boots. App of the Week Kim and Tamara both love Hopper! This helpful app shows you a calendar so you can see the cheapest date to fly and you can set alerts to find out when is the cheapest time to book.
