Today we were thrilled to welcome our good friend Ashley Zumwalt-Forbes, former Deputy Director for Batteries and Critical Materials at the U.S. Department of Energy, to our offices in Houston. Ashley brings more than a decade of experience in acquiring, financing, and developing greenfield and brownfield mining projects, with deep expertise across the global mining supply chain. She served in the Biden Administration from January 2024 to January 2025, overseeing deployment of capital and tax incentives into the U.S. battery supply chain. Prior to her government service, Ashley was Co-Founder and President of Black Mountain Metals and Black Mountain Exploration. We were delighted to host Ashley for a timely and insightful conversation on the state of the global metals and minerals landscape. In our discussion, we explore the bipartisan consensus on reducing U.S. dependence on foreign-sourced metals and minerals, particularly from China. Ashley shares her experience at the DOE and her goal to buy down demand risk to attract private capital, especially for large-scale processing infrastructure. We discuss the surge of investment and momentum in lithium brine projects in the U.S. along with efforts to accelerate domestic mining, including the Trump Administration's move to expedite permits for 20 projects. Ashley outlines the tension between the desire to onshore more production and the current lack of downstream markets outside China, which remains a bottleneck for full supply chain development in the U.S. She shares innovative developments in processing methods, including China's nickel conversion efforts in Indonesia, the potential for copper to be codified as a critical mineral in upcoming legislation, and why permitting reform and seabed mining are bandaids for the larger challenge of unit economics in the U.S. Ashley further explains the difficulty in making margins at each U.S. supply chain stage, especially when compared to China's vertically integrated structure and non-profit-driven strategy, the benefits of targeted tariffs to protect nascent U.S. industries, and the lack of U.S. processing as the true choke point. She highlights the decline of U.S. stockpiles from Cold War levels to today, how the materials once stockpiled fueled the Allied victory in WWII, the depleted reserves in the U.S. today, the complexities involved in the U.S. minerals agreement with Ukraine, challenges in raising capital for mining projects, and the limited investor base. We also examine how structured government support will be essential for the U.S. to be competitive, Ashley's next steps in her pursuit of sourcing and supporting “weird and wonderful” mining transactions, and more. As you will hear, Ashley offers a unique mix of policy insight, deep market understanding, and a genuine passion for rebuilding the U.S. industrial base. We're thankful for her time and insights. Mike Bradley opened the discussion by noting that broader markets were down marginally for the day and that “Trumpatility” appears to be temporarily subsiding. He highlighted a handful of notable developments in energy markets over the past week, first being OPEC+ agreeing to another ~400kbpd increase in June oil production in addition to the ~400kbpd production increase in May, both of which are being done into an oversupplied global oil market. Saudi seems to be the main driver of the OPEC+ increases and offered several reasons for their actions at this juncture. The second development relates to a big change in E&P mindset that's occurred over the last couple of weeks at these lower oil price levels (high $50s/low $60s). A handful of E&Ps recently announced cuts to their 2025 capital programs (CTRA, EOG & FANG) and others are fully expected to announce cuts this week and next. The final development was Diamondback Energy's recent Letter to Stockholders (linked
Markets sold off Monday after 9-striaght days of gains, as anticipated. Palantir announced earnings and outlook: The future for AI is very strong; the stock will open lower this morning simply because it has been trading at all-time highs. Diamondback Energy says they're back to peak oil production against a backdrop of very low oil prices; recently drilled wells are not profitable at current oil prices, which will be a challenge for the "drill-baby-drill' narrative. Meanwhile, markets are still sitting on a death cross between the 50- and 200-DMA; the 20-DMA is slopping upwards, providing support at around 5,370. The rising trend of higher lows will run right into the 20-DMA, which will likely stimulate some buying. At this point, we're still advising to trim portfolios to reduce risk, take profits, and raise some cash. We covered a lot of territory in our conversation starting with background on the formation of LNG Allies, the significant shift in the US from being an importer to becoming the world's largest exporter of LNG in a relatively short period, gratitude from European countries towards the US for supplying LNG in the post Ukraine invasion energy crunch, the ongoing debate about natural gas as a lower impact fuel and its role in the energy transition, the impact of recent geopolitical events and energy prices on energy security and industrial activity, and potential motivations and implications behind the Biden Administration's pause on LNG approvals. We touch on the shift in resistance to long-term LNG contracts, opposition and lobbying against LNG exports, global trust in the US as a supplier and concerns about reliability with changing administrations, the potential for LNG growth in other countries, the impact of US policy decisions on energy supply, and concern with the lack of understanding among policymakers about energy issues. Fred shares his perspective on the diverse export market for LNG, emerging markets in future LNG demand, challenges faced by countries in accessing financing for LNG projects due to credit rating issues, and much more. We ended by asking Fred for his view on the state of journalism and public debate as a writer himself. It was a wide-ranging and in-depth conversation and we can't thank Fred enough for sharing his time and thoughts with us. In our discussion, you will hear we reference a few items. The IEEJ's January 2024 report is linked here and the Wall Street Journal op-ed regarding the IEA is linked here. For additional LNG reading, the LNG Allies' report on US LNG projects and contracts as of February 3rd is linked here and a recent letter to Congress on the LNG Moratorium is linked here. Mike Bradley kicked us off by sharing key economic, equity market, commodity and energy sector thoughts. On the economic front, January CPI printed hotter than expected, pushing the 10-year yield bond up and calling into question the pace of future FED rate cuts. On the broader equity market front, even though the hotter than expected CPI pushed the DJIA down over 500 points, he stressed that market volatility remains historically low and investor sentiment remains bullish. On the commodity market front, WTI price surged to ~$78/bbl. (+$5/bbl. on the week) which is the upper end of its 3-month trading range. He noted several recent crosscurrents effecting crude oil markets and highlighted that U.S. natural gas prompt price plunged to ~$1.65/MMBtu (lowest price level since Covid in 2020 and prior to that 1999) and noted that the 12-month strip traded down to ~$2.50/MMBtu, which is below “most” U.S. natural gas E&Ps break-even price. On the traditional energy sector front, he highlighted this week's $26 billion merger deal between Diamondback Energy and Endeavor Energy, w
Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Critical 1.5C threshold breached over 12-month period for first timeSummary: For the first time, global average temperatures have surpassed the pre-industrial baseline by 1.5 degrees Celsius for a full year, according to data collected by the European earth observation agency.Context: This is notable in that it's a major deviation from those prior norms, but also in that 1.5 degrees Celsius represents the ceiling of several international climate agreements, a level of change we're attempting to avoid because of the potentially catastrophic consequences associated with such a climactic shift; there's some indication that these past 12 months might be unrepresentative because of the El Niño phenomenon that's heating up the surface of the Pacific Ocean right now, though there's also a chance our measurements aren't taking into account opposite factors, like sulfur-seeded cloud cover that artificially cools the planet, so this record is considered to be worrying, even though we will have to see several straight years of average temperatures heightened to this level before the climate science community formally declares that we've made a transition into a 1.5 degrees-warmer world.—Financial TimesOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. A rally by small and midcap names made up for a small retreat by the Nasdaq composite, but only after the Nasdaq made further ground past 16,000. It is less than a 1% rise away from eclipsing its November 2021 all-time peak. The Russell 2000's solid gain helped affirm good numbers in terms of market breadth. AI-themed companies continue to attract attention and investor dollars, for good reason. But techs are not the only game in town lately for investors searching for stocks with breakout potential. We had a fantastic session today with Neil Mehta, Managing Director and Head of North American Natural Resources Research at Goldman Sachs. Neil oversees research coverage for oil and gas, utilities, midstream, metals and mining and clean technology and also leads coverage for large cap energy equities. Neil's coverage and knowledge breadth allowed for a fascinating range of topics. Our conversational tour of today's energy world included background on Goldman's energy research team, how Neil would rank the outlook for the various energy sectors, the current types of investors interested in the energy sector and how it has changed this year, the competition for talent across all industries and why it's particularly important in energy, return of capital and the importance for companies to differentiate themselves, the recently passed IRA, cost of capital and cost of supply, Neil's longer range oil demand outlook, with all of it infused by comments on affordability, reliability, and energy security. We even touched on the all-important "terminal value" issue for energy stocks. Wow... thank you again Neil! To start the show, Mike Bradley reviewed equity and commodity performance from the past week and flagged the upcoming Fed meeting (Wednesday, Sept. 21) and expected basis point rate hike. He then shared four key investor topics for the near and immediate term. Colin Fenton picked up the inflation topic and provided a backdrop of a few non-energy commodity prices, gasoline prices, and US natural gas to illustrate the full extent of what the Fed and we could be facing. Thanks to you all. It was great fun to visit with Neil and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did! In this exclusive video interview, Diamondback Energy CFO Kaes Van't Hof talks about the growing sustainable operations of oil and gas companies in the Permian Basin. As ESG-focused activism continues to gain momentum, there is increasing pressure on oil and gas companies from investors to focus on ESG goals. But even though social and governance are an important part of the ESG movement, investors are more concerned about the environmental performance of oil and gas companies, according to Kaes Van't Hof, CFO and executive vice president of business development of Diamondback Energy. “When we talk about ESG, I think the ‘S' and ‘G' are important, but for oil and gas, it's really about your environmental performance that drives a lot of the investor demand,” Van't Hof said in an exclusive interview with Hart Energy's Faiza Rizvi. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hartenergy/support
