n this episode, Gary Holt, one of thrash metal's most influential guitarists, joins the show to discuss his new book, Exodus' upcoming album, and his time with Slayer. Holt shares insane tour stories, the inspiration behind his book, and what fans can expect from the latest Exodus release.Holt joined Exodus in 1981, shortly after the band was formed by drummer Tom Hunting and guitarist Kirk Hammett (who later left to join Metallica). Taking over lead guitar duties after Hammett's departure, Holt became the band's primary songwriter and creative leader, helping Exodus forge a path as one of the most aggressive and unrelenting forces in thrash metal. Albums like Bonded by Blood, Fabulous Disaster, and Tempo of the Damned solidified Exodus as a cornerstone of the genre. In 2011, Holt was asked to step in for Slayer's Jeff Hanneman, initially as a temporary replacement but eventually becoming a full-time touring guitarist. He remained with Slayer until their final tour in 2019& currennt reunion onr offs, playing a key role in maintaining the band's brutal live energy and contributing to their final studio album, Repentless. Balancing two of thrash metal's most legendary bands, Holt's influence on the genre is undeniable. In this conversation, Holt reflects on his decades in thrash, the relentless energy of playing with Slayer, and the legacy of Exodus. He also teases massive upcoming tours and hints at more projects beyond music. For fans of thrash metal history, behind-the-scenes stories, and legendary musicianship, this episode is a must-listen!
For most SLAYER fans, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as every other new music release day would: we all anxiously anticipated stopping by the record store after work to pick up a copy of their brand-new album, GOD HATES US ALL. Words cannot describe the eerily psychotic synchronicity that seemingly linked the atrocities of that day with the timing of the release of SLAYER's 9th studio album. Still, after twenty-three years (and counting), one thing remains unchanged: GOD HATES US ALL may have been the lone moment of redemption during America's darkest hour, chock full of brutally scorching riffs, hostile vocal vitriol, and a creepier sonic signature that makes this one of the landmark albums of the band's career. Get ready to experience “Dumb and Dumber: The Box Set” and keep in mind that “the mind of a psychopath is different than ours”. Prepare to revisit the weirdness of the “sour cream vs mayonnaise paradox”, brace yourself for the answer to “is it chunky or is it crunchy?”, remember that “pizza dreams are the same as fever dreams” and understand that “Bram Stroker” is a much different dude than “Bram Stoker” when you JOIN US for a dive into the sonic devastation that SLAYER fans worldwide “will never forget”: GOD HATES US ALL. May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal. And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it's “allegedly” not). Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band. In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer. And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher. In short, “it's huge and big…it's bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album. Time to break out your “Jean-Claude Van Damme banned band bandana” as we unveil what the next Doomsicle cover will be (and who's gonna “dress up as Peter Criss”). Find out who 100% “allegedly” has a beef with E.T. (and will NOT be phoning home), stay away from that stuff that “beads up” and “starts getting gritty after a few whacks” and JOIN US for a trip into the aggro-thrash inferno of FROM HELL I RISE. Host D.X. Ferris is an award-winning writer. He has worked for Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, The AV Club, and Decibel magazine. He is a fan. He has opinions. He is the author of something like nine books, depending how you count them. Two are about Slayer. The first one is an entire book about the classic thrash album Reign in Blood, which is part of the fairly prestigious 33 1/3 book series. His bigger Slayer book, though, is the 2023 update of the full-on band biography "Slayer 66 & 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, POSTMORTEM Edition." (This is the third edition; it was previously known as "Slayer 66 & 2/3: The Jeff and Dave Years...."). And that book is mostly what he'll be talking about when we're talkin' Slayer. Most episodes are audio adaptations of chapters from that book. Some have original and/or bonus material. Ferris' Slayer books at Amazon: SlayerBio.com
Coop and Radulich are back to review the latest from SLAYER!!!!!Repentless is the twelfth and final studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer, released on September 11, 2015. This is the band's only album recorded without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died from liver cirrhosis in 2013 and was replaced by Gary Holt, and the first to feature drummer Paul Bostaph since God Hates Us All (2001). Repentless is also the only album the band released on Nuclear Blast and was produced by Terry Date, replacing Rick Rubin after twenty-nine years and nine studio albums as their producer or executive producer. The six-year gap between World Painted Blood (2009) and Repentless was the longest between two Slayer albums in their career, and it would be the band's last studio album before disbanding in 2019, following the conclusion of their final world tour.Three singles were released from the album: "Repentless," "You Against You" and "Pride in Prejudice". The album debuted at no. 4 on the Billboard 200, the highest-charting debut from the band in its native country. It also topped the chart in Germany and featured in the top ten of almost twenty charts around the world. It received generally positive reviews from critics.Original Airdate 9/17/2015Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich
Who: King Parrot, Lamb of God, & PANTERA What: One of the finest heavy metal concert experiences EVER When: Tuesday, September 12, 2023 Where: Ameris Bank Amphitheater - Alpharetta, Georgia Why: For the celebration of The Abbott Brothers history & legacy On this night, thousands of loyal Atlanta metal fans made the pilgrimage to behold the spectacle of King Parrot, Lamb of God, and PANTERA absolutely blowing everyone's mind with one of the finest (and certainly one of the HEAVIEST) heavy metal shows to EVER bless the stage at Ameris Amphitheater! Truly a “family reunion for metal”, it was one of the most powerfully transcendental events of community, reverence, and sheer sonic bliss ever experienced in a single place on a single night. The collective energy of these three extreme metal juggernauts elevated the entire audience to an almost frenzied level of controlled chaos & palpable glee. It was, without question, one of THE best metal shows to come to Atlanta in recent years, bar none. And for a few fleeting hours on that night of “Metal Magic”, it felt just like the old days all over again, in the best way possible. It's “story time” in the Bunkerpoon, which means it's time to “hang tight” and “have some cocktails” with the “three black sheep” and find out “what happens to dudes who can't handle their White Claws” while trying to comprehend how talking to someone on a cell phone at a concert is as futile and pointless as peeing into a tornado. Prepare to learn which two letters equal the letter ladies sit on, discover the proper way to pronounce King Parrot, dine on the finest post-show cuisine at the Waffle House and JOIN US as we reflect on one of the most important nights of heavy metal to have blessed Atlanta in recent years as we reflect on the details of the PANTERA LEGACY TOUR POST GAME WRAP-UP featuring King Parrot, Lamb of God, and PANTERA on the Atlanta tour stop to honor and celebrate the legacy of the brothers, Darrell & Vinnie Abbott. Seriously one of my favorite people on the planet. He is the unmasked Michael Myers in the original classic "Halloween" as well as archival footage in "Halloween II" and "Halloween Kills". But at this point, we've become friends over the past five or six years, my guest on Episode 240 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is simply Tony Moran to me. But nonetheless... an iconic figure in horror. We talk about some recent shenanigans we've had together at some horror conventions then go into how he got the role as Michael Myers. A lot of things I had no idea about since we don't even discuss this stuff when we see each other. From Hollywood stories to an incident at a convention involving Felissa Rose to being in the "Repentless" video from Slayer. He talks about meeting one of his favorite actors and how that came to be and a TON of banter. Tony rules. Enjoy!!!

Metal Heads! We return to finish what we started, with special guest Dr. David Pizzo. We look at the last four studio albums for Slayer. God Hates Us All (2001), Christ Illusion (2006), World Painted Blood (2009), and Repentless (2015). The boys also discuss the impact of Slayer overall to the metal community & Ben and David talk about the differences in seeing the band live during the Jeff Hanneman and Gary Holt eras. Join us for this tribute to the Kings.
To celebrate our 30th episode, we invited our buddy Matt Berlinsky (@meistermatt) from the Stone & Steel Radio Show (stoneandsteelradioshow.com) to join us as we honor the almighty Slayer. Slayer were the first of thrash’s Big 4 to break up, so we knew it was our duty to discuss their entire discography in extreme detail. We all know Slayer is a great band, but we don’t pull any punches here—Slayer found a sound that worked and didn’t veer from it at all throughout their 3 decade lifespan. If you enjoy Slayer, this is not a bad thing. If you don’t enjoy Slayer, we probably already don’t like you.Closing track: “Angel of Death” from Reign in Blood (1986)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincMike’s Picks:Reign in Blood (1986) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteUndisputed Attitude (1996) — Worst AlbumGod Hates Us All (2001) — Least FavoriteAlex’s Picks: Reign in Blood (1986) — Best AlbumSeasons in the Abyss (1990) — Personal FavoriteUndisputed Attitude (1996) — Worst AlbumMatt’s Picks:Reign in Blood (1986) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteDivine Intervention (1994) — Worst AlbumAlbums we discussed this episode…Show No Mercy (1983)Haunting the Chapel EP (1984)Hell Awaits (1985)Reign in Blood (1986)South of Heaven (1988)Seasons in the Abyss (1990)Divine Intervention (1994)Undisputed Attitude (1996)Diabolus in Musica (1998)God Hates Us All (2001)Christ Illusion (2006)World Painted Blood (2009)Repentless (2015)Follow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura, Alex @motherpuncher, and Matt @meistermatt

On this episode of Explore the Big Four, Clint and Ethan tackle Slayer's latest (and last?) record, 2015's Repentless. This was the first record recorded without Jeff Hanneman, their long time guitarist and songwriter, who passed away in 2013. With Gary Holt (on guitars) and Paul Bostaph (drums), this was also Slayer's first record in 29 years without the involvement of Rick Rubin and American Recordings. We contextualize the record and it's relationship tp Metallica, listen together with running commentary, answer fan mail and talk a little about the future of Metal Up Your Podcast. Enjoy! This week's debate: IS EXPLOITATION HURTING NERD CULTURE? It's with a heavy heart that I write this, but as many of you know, amazing and legendary Jon Schnepp passed away last week, as announced during the San Diego Comic-Con 2018. I was proud to call Jon a good friend of mine, and we were going to be exhibiting at Comic-Con this year like we did last year. Things took an unexpected and devastating turn, and his amazing, kind and talented fiance Holly has set up a GoFundMe for hospital expenses: Get Well Jon Schnepp (https://www.gofundme.com/getwelljonschneppfundraiser). I was fortunate enough to spend considerable time with Jon every day at Comic-Con last year, when we really got to know each other. He's helped me in so many ways and he's an all-around amazing dude. His kindness, talent and friendship was renowned. Many of you know him from his work as director of Metalocalypse, The Death of "Superman Lives, The ABCs of Death," as well as Venture Brothers, and the new Slayer comic. All who were fortunate enough knew Jon as a friend consider themselves lucky. He was an inspiration to many and his legacy lives on through the lives he touched. We recorded an episode for this week, but it's hard to concentrate on producing a new episode. Instead, we re-release this episode to honor and remember him. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Rest in peace Jon. Original episode description below https://rss.madcastmedia.com/bestdebate/111/jon.jpg We have an amazing guest this week, the legendary Jon Schnepp, director of Metalocalypse, The Death of "Superman Lives,", and one of the directors of "The ABCs of Death," as well as Venture Brothers, and the new Slayer comic: https://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/30-952/Slayer-Repentless-1 You can also find Jon on Instagram to follow all his latest projects. Here's the crew from this week: https://rss.madcastmedia.com/bestdebate/111/e35_crew1.jpg This week we debated whether or not eploitation is hurting nerd culture, be it from nerds who pirate content from small creators, or large companies pushing out smaller creators at comic book conventions. Jon and I hosted booths next to each other at San Diego Comic-Con for years and may even be teaming up this year. Stay tuned... Mikey Bolts is on audio and Rucka Rucka brings his skillful moderation to this episode getting us back on track several times when we needed it. Is it time to promote Rucka again? Chime in below. And for those of you who haven't seen it, here's Slayer's Repentless video. Jon wrote the comic book and the second and third issue are coming out soon. This song is badass and so is the comic.
"Savior" (Rise Against) 2. "On The Road" (Motörhead) 3. "Cut It Short" (Red Fang) 4. "Poisoning" (Deceivers) 5. "Far From Home" (Five Finger Death Punch) 6. "Becoming" (Pantera) 7. Hate Worldwide (Slayer)

We invited guitarist Brian Eschbach of The Black Dahlia Murder to guest on the podcast this week following the release of the band's latest ripper Abysmal. We talk about the new record, using a different producer to give their music a more organic sound, what life is like off the road, how the business of TBDM works, what their relationships with former members of the band are like and the keys to success of one of the top extreme metal bands going today. The Atlas Moth's Stavros Gianopolis joins us for another edition of "Storytime With Stavros." This time he has a little help from another member of the band and explains why weed can be very bad for you, or at least lead to some intteresting predicaments on the road. We also talk about what happens to bands after they lose core members, inspired by Tom Araya's admission that Repentless was only "half of Slayer." The new album from SLAYER drops today (9/11/15), and we've decided to give you all a special podcast to listen along with Repentless! This is something that's never been tried before in the history of the planet, so who knows if it will work or not -- but as you explore the new record you can listen to commentary about the new songs, a discussion of Slayer's place in history and more. We don't give you the music -- you use your own disc, LP, cassette or stream -- and listen alongside the podcast. But this is not just the two of us hosting! We thought you might need some expert opinions to carry you through why this record may (or may not) be the best thing since sliced wrists. So we invited some of the foremost Slayer experts, musicians, comedians and more to chat along with the album and put things in perspective: Ian Christe (Host of "Bloody Roots" on Sirius XM, author of Sound of the Beast: Complete History of Heavy Metal, www.bazillionpoints.com) Joel McIver (author of The Bloody Reign of Slayer, www.joelmciver.co.uk) DX Ferris (author of Slayer: The Jeff & Dave Years, www.slayerbio.com) Albert Mudrian (author of Choosing Death: The Improbably History of Death Metal, editor of Decibel Magazine, www.decibelmagazine.com) Eli Santana (guitarist of Holy Grail, www.holygrailofficial.com) John Tole (comedian, singer of Pitboss 2000, www.johntole.com) Emperor Rhombus (writer at Metalsucks.net) So check out our first ever attempt at an online listening party and celebrate SLAYER along with! Purchase Repentless here on physical formats and here digitally if you haven't yet. And when we tell you, push play on Repentless and hold on!
