Magalir Mattum (transl. Ladies Only) is a 1994 Indian Tamil-language satirical film directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, produced by Kamal Haasan, and written by Crazy Mohan. While most of us are fans of cinema, for the majority of the population what comes through when they watch a movie, is the people they see on the screen. We are molded in a way to perceive what is on screen rather than what is off it. But there is so much more to movies than what we watch on screen. It's a long-drawn process and so many people are involved in it. And the key people in that list are cinematographers. Being a technical field the obvious gender bias prevails and sort of overshadows a lot of the work being done. Joining our hosts Shriya and Sukanya in this episode is cinematographer and director Fowzia Fathima. Fowzia is an alumnus of the Film and Telivision Institute of India, she started her career as an assistant to P.C. Sreeram. She made her debut as an independent camera person with the film Mitr, My Friend, directed by Revathi, along with an all-female technical crew. She is also the first ever independent woman cinematographer in Malayalam cinema as well as the force behind the Indian Women Cinematographers' collective. Tune in as we discuss gender bias, cinema, and a lot more! The last time I spoke to her was a decade ago, and the issues that mattered to her then matter even today. She is a prominent Tamil poet, writer and lyricist whose works have largely centered on body politics and oppression. Her second work, Mulaigal (Breasts), published in 2002, that spoke about female sexuality and the use of Tamil words like mulaigal and yoni (vagina) enraged certain sections of the society (read male writers) that they called for Revathi's book to be burnt followed by threats and discussions about her morality. But Revathi has since then gone on to publish more works and also started Panikkudam (Amniotic Sac), first Tamil feminist magazine. Revathi received Sigaram 15: Faces of Future award for literature from India Today and was one of the four women poets whose works were translated into English to highlight its prominence by Harper Collins. She has also penned lyrics for A.R.Rahman. In this episode, we talk about many pertinent topics such as: - Why women's bodies are constantly regulated - How regional poetry is a tool to dissent - Meeting legendary poet Mahasweta Devi and what she learnt from her - Regional poets in India vs. poets who write in English - How translation has helped bring the issue of body politics resonate further - Working as first time lyricist with A.R.Rahman MUSIC: Lights by Sappheiros https://soundcloud.com/sappheirosmusic Check out Maharani Talks on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maharanitalks/ If you enjoy this podcast, please consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts. In this episode Revathi and I dive into the realities of what is it like to be a woman in workplace in the 21st century. Seeing as I'm in no way an expert or well versed in this area I was really looking forward to learning and bettering my understanding of the improvements and difficulties my friends and colleagues face. Revathi is an articling student at a insurance defense firm based in downtown Toronto. Coming from a science background and moving into the legal field she has had the chance to see how women navigate the work space in a variety of fields. One of her favorite quotes is: “Feminism isn't about making women stronger, women are already strong. It's about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” - D Anderson

Living in an era of diverse transformations, the design process is evolving across domains. Designers are now expected to look through the diverse lenses while designing for diversity that each domain has to offer, leading to the practice of making good designs. A good design goes beyond aesthetics and telling a good story. It is about convenience and how well it fits into your life; a better defining factor is how ‘unnoticeable' it is. In this episode, we get into a conversation with Revathi Kant, who takes us through her journey of designeering. Her journey has been a unique blend of both the worlds which she shares with us. She leads as the Chief Design Officer at Titan Company Limited. She talks about the different factors that come into the play throughout the designing process that ultimately lead to ‘good' design; one of the key factors being the holistic approach towards understanding the consumers.
