About the Lecture: The Trump Administration's national defense strategy contains the following judgment: “The central challenge to U.S. prosperity and security is the reemergence of long-term, strategic competition by…revisionist powers.” Why has “great-power competition” become a—if not the—dominant construct guiding the U.S. foreign policy establishment's understanding of contemporary geopolitics? What are its analytical underpinnings and prescriptive implications? About the Speaker: Ali Wyne is a Washington, DC-based policy analyst in the RAND Corporation's Defense and Political Sciences Department. He serves as a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and a nonresident fellow with the Modern War Institute. Since January 2015 he has been the rapporteur for a U.S. National Intelligence Council working group that convenes government officials and international relations scholars to analyze trends in the world order. Ali served as a junior fellow in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's China Program from 2008 to 2009 and as a research assistant to Graham Allison at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs from 2009 to 2012. He has also conducted research for Robert Blackwill, Derek Chollet, Henry Kissinger, Wendy Sherman, and Richard Stengel. From January to July 2013 he worked on a team that prepared Samantha Power for her confirmation hearing to be ambassador to the United Nations. From 2014 to 2015 he was a member of the RAND Corporation's adjunct staff, working for the late Richard Solomon on its “Strategic Rethink” series. Ali graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with dual degrees in Management Science and Political Science (2008) and received his Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School (2017), where he was a course assistant to Joseph Nye. While at the Kennedy School, he served on a Hillary for America working group on U.S. policy towards Asia. Ali is a coauthor of Lee Kuan Yew: The Grand Master's Insights on China, the United States, and the World (2013) and a contributing author to Our American Story: The Search for a Shared National Narrative (2019), Power Relations in the Twenty-First Century: Mapping a Multipolar World? (2017), and the Routledge Handbook of Public Diplomacy (2008). Recognized as one of the most successful folk rock duos of the 70's, Brewer & Shipley have remained true to their original form throughout five decades. Constantly touring Brewer & Shipley could be found performing in such notable venues as; Carnegie Hall, The Bottom Line, The Troubadour, The Roxy, Keil Opera House, and Arrowhead Stadium. Because of their broad appeal, they became a favored support act for major tours, sharing the stage with a diverse list of artists, including: Elton John, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bonnie Raitt, Electric Light Orchestra, Jethro Tull, Humble Pie, Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath among others. In 1979 after more than a decade of writing, traveling, and performing, Brewer and Shipley parted company to pursue personal interests. Michael Brewer continued to make music, recording a solo album for Full Moon Records entitled "Beauty Lies". This release featured guest artists such as Linda Ronstadt and J.D. Souther, and was produced by longtime friend Dan Fogelberg. Tom Shipley began working as a television producer/director, eventually forming his own production company (Tarkio Communications). He later founded the Oral History of The Ozarks Project, a not-profit organization producing documentaries about life in the Missouri Ozarks. In 1986, at the request of a Kansas City classic rock station the duo reunited for a concert to celebrate the stations first birthday. Unsure of what to expect having been out of the public eye for so long, the duo was overwhelmed as they walked on stage to over 10,000 cheering fans welcoming their return. Having come full circle from their days as staff songwriters living in Los Angeles, Brewer & Shipley began writing together again. Their first project? The soundtrack for one of Shipley's documentaries...the award winning, "Treehouse - An Ozark Story". In recent years, the duo has witnessed rejuvenated interest in their music, beginning with BMG's purchase of their catalog and subsequent re-issue of the critically acclaimed "Tarkio" release. This was soon followed by the inclusion of "One Toke Over The Line" on the "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Limited Edition 25th Anniversary CD" (Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Rcds). The same song was later featured on the "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" motion picture soundtrack (Geffen Rcds.). In addition, the duo contribute guest vocals to their trademark song on "Hempilation II" (Capricorn Rcds.). Brewer & Shipley continue to tour and record regularly, having released 2 albums since reuniting - "Shanghai" and "Heartland.” Regarding Brewer & Shipley, Ron Sylvester (The Branson Note) wrote, "An actual group from the 70's still capable of making vital music...For a duo best remembered as 70's folkies, this is a solid blast into the present...undeniable proof these guys can still make evocative music". www.brewerandshipley.com

It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road." This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!

Jeremy Clyde is a great guest who provides not only British charm and elegance but great stories! Listen to this one hour in-depth interview with Richard Solomon. Jeremy Clyde is not just one half of sixties British Invasion duo Chad & Jeremy, he’s also an accomplished actor and songwriter who recently embarked on a one-album-a-year solo project entitled ‘The Bottom Drawer Sessions’. Jeremy takes the stage in a rare solo show to launch the newest installment of The Bottom Drawer Sessions, performing new songs, some Chad & Jeremy classics, and stripped down versions of deep cuts from the psychedelic years. The first of Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde's 14 U.S. chart hits was 1963’s "Yesterday's Gone", followed by "A Summer Song", "Willow Weep for Me", "If I Loved You", "Before and After" and more. TV appearances included "Shindig", "Hullabaloo", "The Patty Duke Show", "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Batman." Their musical adventure-and evolution-continued with the hits "Distant Shores" and "You Are She" , from late 1966, but they turned a corner with the September 25, 1967 LP release ‘Of Cabbages And Kings". Looking back at the classic album, All Music guide says Chad & Jeremy "were gifted songwriters who could work outside the standard pop framework of the day, and Chad Stuart (who orchestrated the album) was a talented and imaginative arranger who gives the material a sound that's both rich and intimate." That songwriting gift never left Jeremy Clyde, and through decades of off and on touring with Chad & Jeremy and on and on acting on British television--including "Downton Abbey"-- and the stages of London's West End. Beginning with the 2014 release of "The Bottom Drawer Sessions No. 1", Jeremy Clyde has --with more than 50 sweeping, evocative, inspired recordings- reclaimed the title of ‘songwriter’. He describes the Bottom Drawer sessions as “analog songs for an analog age”. With his 2018 U.S. tour dates - on his own and with Peter Asher - another title, "troubadour" can't be far behind. Special thanks to Jeremy for a wonderful interview. (Chris Maffei - sound engineer for this recording - thanks Chris!)
History was made when My Father's Place re-emerged in 2018 to pick-up right where it left off - featuring great performers playing original music. To initiate the new venue, Johnny Rullo (who wrote and played the MFP theme song) played our very first show to a packed audience. In this podcast, first broadcast on WCWP 88.1 FM Johnny and Richard Solomon share stories of growing up in Queens, musical influences, the inspirations for songs, and how Johnny played at the original My Father's Place on Bryant Avenue. To share your memories of My Father's Place, send us an email to radio@myfathersplace.com
