There are many personality profiles you can use. Knowing your type does not by proxy…help you. You need to know how to utilize it. This is part 4 of our series on Ian Morgan Cron and his insight and guidance into the Enneagram personality assessment.  In this episode, I'm going to cover 7 aspects of our discussion that have really stuck out to me and seem to be resonating with other listeners. I want to quote something I read this morning by dandapani in his book, “The Power Of Unwavering Focus”, which I'm studying in preparation for having him on the show tomorrow, he cited a mentor of his, Michael Lutzenkirchen, who said, “While I appear as a teacher to you, I'm a student of the subject. And I hope it always stays that way.”  I greatly appreciate this, and in truth, I feel the best teachers are those who are, and understand they are, still students. Always students. It's from this the greatest teaching comes. I of course recommend Ian Cron's books. His recent book is The Story Of You and was the impetus for this series. His initial book is called “The Road Back To You” and seven years after initial publication the book is still in the top 1,000 rankings in Amazon. That is rock star status.  You can read the books and get a great understanding of what Enneagram number you are. Or…go take the assessment. Ian has it at  typologyinstitute.com, just click on iEQ9 at the top of the page. And you can use the discount code SELFHELP to receive 20% off a monthly or annual subscription which provides access to all 3 of his courses on how to harness the Enneagram.  The Self-Help(ful) podcast is brought to you by Ziglar. We explore the question of, “Should Christians engage in the Enneagram?” With its focus on self and mystical origin, is it OK for Christians to use?We don't have concrete answers on this episode. For some of us, the Enneagram is OK in moderation, so long as our primary identity is in Christ. For others, they might avoid the Enneagram because it can lead to an excessive focus on themselves rather than Christ. And for some, the Enneagram's origin might be a reason for them not to participate. We want you to walk away and ask yourself, “What is the Lord laying on my heart with this topic?”

Yes, I said exposing.   That's how I feel right now.  This could be one of my most vulnerable episodes, and I dragged another Enneagram 8 into the mix.  Solidarity.    Thanks to London Tierney from Particle Goods, you get a real look into some of the healthy and unhealthy behavior tendencies on an Enneagram 8.    We talk about everything from the struggle to carve out white space,  our trust issues, and how we'd much prefer the "rip the bandaid off" method over "beat around the bush".       Despite our tough, often big and confident personalities, we're vulnerable and fighting insecurities just like the rest.  And we're really tender momma bears who would fight to the death for you.   (if we trust you, that is.  we are suspicious...so bare with us.)Maybe this resonates?   Our whole goal is to grow deeper with each other and ourselves. We want to find the healthy self who can celebrate the strengths and learn from the 'less than positive' behavior tendencies.    Thanks to London for joining me in this conversation.   "Hey London, wanna join me for a bonus episode where we expose ourselves and our unhealthy 8-ness, share the blunt truths, and laugh at how silly our thought process can be?"        She said yes, just like a true E8 would.(And, once we come out of hiding, if you see us at a party....we promise we're not judging your niceness.  Maybe.)Book Resource:   The Road Back to You.Other Great Resources: RHETI Test, The Enneagram Institute The Sacred EnneagramEnneagram and CoffeeActual Enneagram

Meanwhile, Christina recommends you order a boxed set of A Game for Good Christians (for holidays, we love mixing the AGFGC deck with our Cards Against Humanity deck!) and Brandon recommends you recognize the calling of the church by reading the book of Acts from the New Testament, and then get your life together by reading "Designing your Life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, and "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life" by Mark Manson. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deargodwth/message

Friends- the day is here. We’re finally digging into the ever-elusive Enneagram. In this episode, Nic, Mere, and special guest (Nic’s mom, Barbara) discuss all things Enneagram. Throughout this conversation, we use learnings from the book The Wisdom of the Enneagram. It was written by two Enneagram experts, Don Riso and Russ Hudson, which you will hear referenced throughout the podcast. We think you’ll love this conversation and hope it inspires you to do more work with this sacred personality typing system. It is seriously game changing. We think you’ll love this conversation and hope it inspires you to do more work with this sacred personality typing system. As a quick FYI, this is a two part series, so be sure to join us again for Part 2 in a couple of weeks.   SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE #8 The references Nicole makes throughout the episode (as she describes the different types) comes from the book The Wisdom of the Enneagram by two Enneagram experts, Don Riso and Russ Hudson. Riso and Hudson are founders of the Enneagram Institute, and their website provides a test where you can learn your Enneagram type. Ian Cron also provides a (free) test on his website. You’ve heard us reference his podcast, Typology, in previous episodes, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, we highly recommend it! His book The Road Back To You and his podcast are great starting points for learning about this ancient tradition. This episode is one of our favorites. Mere also references Jen Hatmaker’s podcast episode she did with Chris Heuertz, author of The Sacred Enneagram and another Enneagram expert (who has been a disciple of folks like Mother Teresa and Richard Rohr). This is another resource if you would like to learn more about the Enneagram. Mere is also in the middle of his book and, though it can be a bit heady, it also has a contemplative, spiritual depth that is appreciated. Last Enneagram resource we’ll remind you of before we get to the two fun things mentioned in our Shoot The Breeze episode: The Liturgist Podcast episode with Ian Cron and Susan Stabile discussing the Enneagram is arguably the BEST starting point to learn. We’ve linked this particular episode many other times in our show notes because truly, we cannot say enough about it. It’s definitely time to check it out if you haven’t already! And finally, the two fun things referenced in the beginning of the show: The Giving Keys and the Digital Gene App. Yes, purchasing a Giving Key will cost you $40. AND. You are employing folks transitioning out of homelessness AND purchasing a word that speaks to you; a word out of which you can live for as long as you need before you pass it along to someone who needs it next. You might remember Nicole passing Meredith her “Courage” key in Episode 7 before Meredith shared her Deconstruction story. You can learn more about this fabulous company here. The second fun mention is the Digital Gene World Map Puzzle that is like the nerd’s version of Bedazzled Jewels- or whatever that game was. It’s like a matching game but for countries all over the world. And there are levels! This actually sounds right up my (Mere’s) ally- I once knew all of the capitals in the world thanks to my 7th grade Geography teacher, Dr. O’Brien. Thanks, Nic, for getting us all addicted to this app! Ok, friends, that’s it from us. As always, thanks for listening, and do feel free to connect with us on Instagram or by shooting an email to roomforbothpodcast@gmail.com! -Nic & Mere One more thing… If you're not yet subscribed to the Room For Both podcast (and you're here on a mobile device) you can subscribe below to stay in-the-know about future episode releases. This week on The Road Back To You, Ian and Suzanne interview Darren Whitehead an Australian husband, father, pastor, and author living in America, who happens to be a healthy, integrated Enneagram 3. In their conversation you will learn: Why it's easy for you to connect with people. Why it's important for you to appear successful. Why you control the amount of information you share with others.
