For education purposes. Information is of a sensitive nature. Discretion is advised. The tragic stories of Mary Turner in 1918 and Ta'Kiya Young in 2023 are separated by over a century, yet they share haunting parallels that reflect the enduring issue of racial violence and injustice in the United States. Both women were African American, pregnant, and their lives were violently taken by acts of brutality, leaving a lasting impact on their communities and the nation's consciousness. Mary Turner (1918): Mary Turner was a young black woman who was lynched by a white mob in Lowndes County, Georgia, in May 19181. Her husband, Hayes Turner, had been lynched the day before, and Mary publicly vowed to seek justice for his murder. In response, the mob targeted Mary, who was eight months pregnant at the time. In a horrific act of violence, she was hung upside down by her ankles, set on fire, and then cut open, causing the death of her unborn child before she was shot and killed2. No one was ever convicted for her lynching, and her death became a rallying point for anti-lynching campaigns by the NAACP3. Ta'Kiya Young (2023): Nearly 105 years later, Ta'Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant black woman, was shot and killed by a police officer in Blendon Township, Ohio, after she was accused of shoplifting and attempted to drive away from the scene4. The incident occurred on August 24, 2023, and resulted in the death of both Ta'Kiya and her unborn child. The shooting was captured on bodycam video and sparked outrage and calls for justice from the community and beyond5. Parallels: The parallels between these two cases lie in the systemic racism and the violence inflicted upon black bodies, particularly those of black women. Both Mary Turner and Ta'Kiya Young were expecting mothers whose lives were cut short in acts of extreme violence. Their deaths highlight the historical and ongoing struggle for racial equality and the protection of black lives in America. The fact that such events can occur over a century apart underscores the need for continued vigilance and action to address racial injustice and police brutality. These stories are a somber reminder of the work that remains to be done to ensure that all individuals, regardless of race, are treated with dignity and respect, and that their rights are protected by the law. The legacy of Mary Turner and Ta'Kiya Young serves as a call to action to confront and dismantle the structures of racism that have allowed such tragedies to occur. Paul describes him as an 'entrepreneur' although others might describe him as a 'chancer' given some of his actions.William had 7 children with his first wife Elizabeth Compton, but the final child saw Elizabeth die in childbirth. William re-married to an Emily Dodd, and they added a further 9 children to their family - and as you might expect - this came at a price! William worked as a lead glazier on some of England's most impressive architecture, but his determination to keep a roof over his family's head led him to take on a number of other jobs to make ends meet, including Punch and Judy shows, busking and there's even a family rumour about a sale of some well known East End songs. The Brick Wall - Samuel Chiddicks  It's a brick wall that's been standing for 30 years that is asking for help with, and it's one that he has tried to crack time and time again.Paul knows that Samuel Chiddicks was buried in South Fambridge in Essex, England, in 1816, with a given age of 55 years old, which in turn gives an approximate birth year of 1761.He is believed to have married a Mary Turner in 1787 in South Fambridge, but he is known to have married Ann Beard in 1794.Paul has undertaken an autosomal test with Ancestry, and a Y-DNA test with Family Tree DNA, and this has given him some Chiddicks matches in the USA and Northern Ireland, that all lead back to County Tyrone and County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland... but how?Where was Samuel Chiddicks born?Who were his parents? Is Northern Ireland in his Chiddicks ancestry? If you think that you can help Paul with his brick wall, you can contact him via his website chiddicksfamilytree.com or you can find him on Twitter @chiddickstree. In this Juneteenth Thought Project episode, we talk to Britton Williams about the Black MAP Project and reinventing mental health care for the Black community. Just over 100 years ago, a white mob lynched and mutilated Mary Turner, a Black woman who was eight months pregnant, for criticizing the lynching of her husband. How did Turner's family and community heal from this horror? Britton Williams, a Social Welfare doctoral student at the CUNY Graduate Center, explores that question and related ones through the Black MAP Project. Williams joins this Juneteenth episode of The Thought Project to talk about the Black MAP Project and her research into the ways that Black people have promoted their own health and well-being. She plans to use her findings to re-fashion mental health care so that serves Black people, free from the bias and oppression have pervaded the field. “Enslaved peoples who sought freedom through escape were once labeled with a disorder termed drapetomania,” she writes on the website. “Black people's drive and desire for freedom was pathologized. This is only one example of the ways in which Black people have been oppressed under the guise of ‘treatment.'” Listen in to learn how Williams envisions mental health care that reflects and supports the Black community.

OF THEE I SING COMPOSER: George Gershwin LYRICIST: Ira Gershwin BOOK: George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind DIRECTOR: George S. When a national contest is held to find a potential bride, Wintergreen is paired with America's sweetheart Diana Deveraux, but he soon realizes that he is in love with Mary Turner, the contest's organizer.   Of Thee I Sing is the result of George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind's desire to write a musical satire with George and Ira Gershwin that could criticize the United States' political party system without being watered down for mainstream audiences. Apart from its satirical comedy, the musical is notable for the way the score and lyrics tie in closely with the rest of the libretto, its long stretches without songs aside from underscoring, and its early use of projection on the American stage. Additionally, this musical marks the first pairing of the theatrical team William Gaxton and Victor Moore. The show was an immediately popular success in its Boston tryout and subsequent New York run, earning praise from critics, audiences, and even the politicians evidently ridiculed by the storyline. Ultimately, Of Thee I Sing was recognized for its innovative achievements by becoming the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a controversial decision which helped to elevate the artform of musical comedy and pave the way for more inventive musicals to follow. Laura Frankos outlines the ways Of Thee I Sing was a theatrical endeavor with a lasting impact. Laura Frankos is the author of The Broadway Musical Quiz Book (Applause Books, 2010). In late May 1918 in Valdosta, Georgia, ten Black men and one Black woman—Mary Turner, eight months pregnant at the time—were lynched and tortured by mobs of white citizens. Through hauntingly detailed full-color artwork and collage, Elegy for Mary Turner names those who were killed, identifies the killers, and evokes a landscape in which the NAACP investigated the crimes when the state would not and a time when white citizens baked pies and flocked to see Black corpses while Black people fought to make their lives—and their mourning—matter. Included are contributions from C. Tyrone Forehand, great-grandnephew of Mary and Hayes Turner, whose family has long campaigned for the deaths to be remembered; abolitionist activist and educator Mariame Kaba, reflecting on the violence visited on Black women's bodies; and historian Julie Buckner Armstrong, who opens a window onto the broader scale of lynching's terror in American history. With a flight to Atlanta imminent, Archer, Louise and their family's time at AtlantiCare was coming to an abrupt and hectic end. The Senft family's departure from AtlantiCare in NJ felt the way everything at AtlantiCare had been: difficult and with many roadblocks but still grateful for Archer's life and also buoyed by the relational power of friendship and connection helping pave the way to Atlanta. How did we get here, and where do we go now?  All signs pointed to the Shepherd Center. Join Louise for this final episode of Season 2: Episode 25: On Eagle's Wings and soar with her listening to a surprise video of children's voices and a gratitude tribute to all EMS workers who rescued Archer off the beach and who executed his delicate transport to Georgia.  In this episode, you will hear excerpts from interviews with: Chief Harry Back, former Sr. Lieutenant of the Cape May Beach patrol and current Chief of the Cape May Beach Patrol for the City of Cape May, NJ, who was first on the scene at the beach when Archer was injured. Harry and Louise speak about the logistics, coordination and hard work of getting a person with SCI stabilized and off the beach. Mary Turner, LPN, a member of the Beach Club and a nurse who was on the beach the day Archer was injured. She and Louise talk about witnessing Archer's injury and knowing the moment it was serious as his arm drifted in the tide. Chief Alex Coulter, Chief of the Cape May Fire Department, Cape May, NJ, who called and coordinated the helicopter and paramedics to transport Archer off the island that day. He and Louise talk about the teamwork and logistics of transporting an injured person off a small geographical place where the largest landing pad is an elementary school parking playing field.  Will Hudson, a member of the Beach Club and a college student who was on the beach when Archer was injured. Will and Louise talk about the scene of Archer's injury and his beautiful frolicking dolphin dive and the confusion that came in the moments after he dove. Mabeth Hudson, Esq., a member of the Beach Club and Will's mom, who heard about the injury from Will. She and Louise talk about the moment Archer was injured and what Will witnessed. India Cochrane, a member of the Beach Club and a college student who was on the beach at the time Archer was injured with Chance Laufman and witnessed the EMTs trying to stabilize him. She and Louise talk about what it is like to witness accidents like that and how scary that can be. Our theme music is Victoria Vox. Our sound effects are from freesound.org. Subscribe to Our Faith in Writing wherever you listen to podcasts, and don't forget to rate and review the show letting us know how these conversations are helping you feel less alone in your writing life and your reading life. More about Reparations Now! Reparations Now! asks for what's owed. In formal and non-traditional poems, award-winning poet Ashley M. Jones calls for long-overdue reparations to the Black descendants of enslaved people in the United States of America. In this, her third collection, Jones deftly takes on the worst of today—state-sanctioned violence, pandemic-induced crises, and white silence—all while uplifting Black joy. These poems explore trauma past and present, cultural and personal: the lynching of young, pregnant Mary Turner in 1918; the current white nationalist political movement; a case of infidelity. These poems, too, are a celebration of Black life and art: a beloved grandmother in rural Alabama, the music of James Brown and Al Green, and the soil where okra, pole beans, and collards thrive thanks to her father's hands. By exploring the history of a nation where “Black oppression's not happenstance; it's the law,” Jones links past harm to modern heartache and prays for a peaceful world where one finds paradise in the garden in the afternoon with her family, together, safe, and worry-free. While exploring the ways we navigate our relationships with ourselves and others, Jones holds us all accountable, asking us to see the truth, to make amends, to honor one another. Forward Together: A Podcast from the Arkansas Poor People's Campaign

In Episode 11, longtime Arkansas Poor People's Campaign committee member and Little Rock, Arkansas native Mary Givens explains the generational trauma and the relationship with her dad that sets her activism on fire. Givens' 20-year-career in literacy activism right here in Central Arkansas, her parents' wisdom, and Mary Turner, a woman who was barely twenty-years-old and eight months pregnant when she met with a Georgia mob in 1918, unfold in this episode as Mary lays out the causal relationship between generational racist violence and the structural oppression that protects it as poverty and illiteracy go unchecked in Black communities crying out for healing and repair. Listen in as Mary breaks down the different kinds of racists and likens them to the various Covid strains that have infected communities, some more harmful than others, but each dangerous and potentially deadly. Our podcast ends on a high note with a nod to the work that activist groups have done and continue to do despite setbacks like murdering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Arkansas' newest stand your ground laws. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/forwardtogetherarppc/message

Mary Turner Thomson met and married a man that explained his unusual absences, disappearances and at times physical injuries on his job as an IT expert with the CIA and he had proof of him being a spy! However, in 2006, Mary's world shattered when she discovered her husband Will was a bigamist, con man and convicted sex offender. Her story is how one man manipulated an intelligent (mensa member) and independent woman, conning her out of £200,000 and leaving her to bring up the children he claimed he could never have due to infertility. Mary thought her story would end with the revelation that Will in fact had several families ― and numerous children. But when she discovered that he had continued to prey on new victims, she vowed to turn his betrayal into a force for good. On her mission to protect these women and others, Mary also learned more about the psychopath behind Will's duplicitous behaviour.Mary's memoir ‘The Bigamist' and her new book ‘The Psychopath' can be purchased on Amazon. www.maryturnerthomson.comFB: www.facebook.com/maryturnerthomsonTwitter: @TheBigamistBookIG: maryturnerthomson IG:onemomentpleasepodcastFacebook: one moment please podcastonemomentpleasepodcast.com

Some books don't need to be lengthy to have a powerful impact on the reader. Elegy for Mary Turner by Rachel Marie-Crane Williams is one of those books. Small in size and short in length, its typography, illustrations, and paper are unusual. But it chronicles a horrific crime in Georgia one hundred years ago. Mary Turner's husband had been lynched, and she spoke out forcefully and publicly at the injustice. For that act of verbal defiance, she herself would be murdered by the people she passed by on a daily basis. Lynchings were hardly unusual in that era in that part of our country. Though it was far more common for Black men to be murdered at the slightest pretext, other Black women through the years would meet the same cruel fate. She was taken to Folsom's Bridge along the Little River, then hanged upside down from a nearby tree, shot at, and eventually set on fire. Had Mary Turner lived, she would have given birth one month later. Instead, her womb was sliced open, and the tiny

My conversation with Mary was both captivating and shocking!Life was going great for her until one day she received a phone call from a womanAt that point, Mary was a business advisor for the Scottish Enterprise Network, married with three children, and owned her own home – then in April 2006 she got that phone call - from her husband's other wife! Not only was he a bigamist but he was also a con man who had ripped her off for just under £200k and had left her £56k in debt on credit cards he had taken out in her name.  She was left homeless, broke, and unemployed with three children to support on her own.  Rather than letting it break her she decided to use the experience for good and wrote her first book, ‘The Bigamist', which came out in 2007.  Her second true crime memoir is being launch on 1st March titled ‘The Psychopath'. Mary is now an international best-selling author and speaker, able to talk about topics from recovery to psychopaths, as well as a writing coach and publishing consultantSome key points from our interview: How she's learnt to continually fight and keep going on How looking back, she now realises she had been a victim of coercive control How her experiences with her husband have given her huge insights into psychopaths and is an expert in understanding them How her childhood experiences helped her to find the strength to refuse to be a victim again How her recovery from childhood sexual abuse taught her she had a choice in how she responded and knew she could recover How she discovered she a very high functioning empath How she learnt to laugh and love again How she now shares her story to speak out to end the shame for othersReach out to Mary here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryturnerthomson/*                                     *                                             *                                              *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features  individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. With powerful pieces like “Mary Turner - An American Tradition” and “Ferguson - An American Tradition,” Wilkins wanted to convey the deep pain his people have endured in this country for centuries. That message lands harder in 2020, as the world struggles through a global pandemic, and cities across America are uprising due to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, three unarmed Black people who died at the hands of whites.  The pain is balanced with joy, too, as on the opening track “Warriors,” a bright tune that celebrates the love that’s closest to you. “It’s about friendships, family, your hood, and your community,” Wilkins says.   “It’s about us serving as warriors for whatever we believe in.”“Immanuel has always been leaning forward into the music,” says Moran. “He is a powerful player. He blends traditions in a way that only his generation knows how to do. His band is set to begin a new mode that I

She quickly grew to be the third largest agency in her area and was the envy of other small businesses. Except for the fact that her instant success and uncontrolled growth came with a heavy price tag. Unable to sustain the growth, Mary went back to nursing as a recruiter. She was hired to recruit nurses into the hospital system and out recruited seasoned HR recruiters 9 to 1. She then became the Director of Healthcare Recruitment, but she had the "itch" to do her own business. Despite her experience with her first business, Mary went full steam ahead with starting a CPR business. She leverage her experience in the Staffing Agency business to move slowly, cautiously and purposefully. Within 2 years, she had put together a business providing CPR services across the country. Realizing that she had a special gift for helping others to start their business as well, Mary became a certified E-Myth coach through the E-Myth methodology, which teaches small business owners that structure is everything. By creating structure and working "on" your business and not "in" your business is the key message Mary brings to her clientele. This is a story about a group of 12 African-Americans who were arrested and charged with 120 felonies after they shifted control of a local school board in rural Georgia from a majority white board to majority black. This story happened months after Brian Kemp became Secretary of State in 2010, and Kemp kept the case open for six years, even after two mistrials and an acquittal.I have finished a five-month project looking into a fight over these voter fraud allegations that turned out to be what now looks to many like a case of voter suppression and intimidation. It's out today, and here I discuss it with Ariel Hart of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who did crucial reporting on this story a few years ago.My article on the Quitman 10+2, with the video project as well, is here.Ariel Hart’s articles on this story are below:12/13/14 - Voting Case Mirrors National Struggle12/27/15 - Georgians stung by confusion over voting law1/4/16 - Georgian stung by voter law gets elected The Vice article from 2014 is here.
