Before he found runaway success with his debut novel, Boy Swallows Universe, and follow-up All Our Shimmering Skies, Trent Dalton spent decades as a journalist investigating the real-life social inequities that underpin his third novel, Lola in the Mirror: poverty, violence, homelessness – and the power of hope. The result is a moving, darkly funny story about life and death that is by turns heart-breaking and eye-opening. In conversation with musician and writer Clare Bowditch at Melbourne Town Hall, Dalton discusses Lola in the Mirror and the passion for social justice that inspired him to write it. Á Tea For Two with Áine Tyrrell

What can I say about Emily Lubitz? I first heard Emily's voice at Queenscliff Music Festival years ago when she played a set before mine and I was just mesmerised by her and TinPan Orange and been her and the band's biggest fans ever since. When I first moved to the Northern Rivers, Bundjalung Country a friend put me in touch with another musician who had just recently moved here with kids as well. That was Harry James Angus. We hung out at the park with our two boys running amuck before going back to meet his wife. I nearly DIED when his wife was my biggest fan girl moment Emily Lubitz. I played it cool. real cool, but I was NOT COOL fumbling over words! Emily and I became quick cuppa tea pals, and would you believe they offered me BARRY'S TEA on arrival? I mean was that not just the sign of the best friendship to come. It has been amazing to have Emily living nearby, with both of us being in the music community and being mothers and navigating this crazy thing called full time music and I just love where our chats always go and so we sat down in the bus with a Cuppa and some Northern Rivers rain and recorded one of our cuppas for ye. Our chats went from touring, and Beyoncé through to our sneaking in creativity times in-between loads of laundries to our belief in the shifting plates in the music industry that we are witnessing and proud to be part of. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT Emily Lubitz instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emily_lubitz/youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1OP843bEcCoSoHaFLRtiWwVery few artists can cradle your heart in their hands while they kick your ass, but after more than a decade touring with critically acclaimed indie-folk darlings Tinpan Orange, Emily Lubitz is striding out on her own. The six-foot tall frontwoman with the gossamer voice has combined forces with Freyja Hooper on drums and Winona Miller on bass to create a new, darkly romantic vision. With that timeless, aching quality that only the great voices have, Lubitz is every singer's favourite singer, a captivating live performer who has won the hearts of audiences around the world, and yet she is more priestess than popstar, creating her own iconography that sears itself into the listener's imagination.Lubitz tells us stories about everyday things, but her voice transfigures them into works of beauty, like a messy bedroom suffused with golden morning light.  Lubitz is a veteran of the scene, having performed on some of the world's biggest stages and collaborated with the likes of Paul Kelly, Martha Wainwright, Clare Bowditch and the album she recorded with old friend Mama Kin, and yet her solo work is imbued with the raw energy of a breakthrough artist.Support the show

Clare Bowditch is a true story teller. Whether it’s as an ARIA award-winning song writer, as an actor from much-loved Aussie drama Offspring, as an author of her memoir Your Kind of Girl, as an activist for business and the arts or as a mother, a very much in love wife and proud member of her community, Clare is always telling a story that’s honest and that we can relate to. It is such a pleasure to share my chat with Clare and some her beautiful stories, the highs and at times lows, that she has experienced in her life. But what struck me in our chat is that, even when there are low times, there is the ability to try and recover from them and Clare’s story shows us that. So grab yourself a cuppa, maybe a gherkin (just wait – this will make sense to you soon), and settle in for story time. A few trigger warnings here, we do discuss diet and diet culture as well as mental health and anxiety. So you might want to skip through a few parts if these topics are sensitive for you. As Susan Ruben Solomon wrote, perhaps the greatest struggle for a woman artist who has or desires children, is the struggle against herself. No amount of money, no amount of structural change can entirely resolve the fundamental dilemma for the artists mother, the seeming incompatibility of her two greatest passions. The effect is a divided heart, a split self, the fear that to succeed at one means to fail at the other. Rachel Power is a freelance writer, editor, and artist, and mother of 2 from Melbourne, Australia. She has contributed to many publications including Mamma Mia, The Big Issue, Kill Your Darlings and The Age. She has worked as a court illustrator for Channel Nine, production editor of Arena Magazine, and is currently communications manager for the Australian Education Union Victoria. Rachel is the author of Alison Raffish - A life for Art, The Divided Heart, Art and Motherhood and Motherhood in Creativity. After having Rachel's second book, The Divided Heart recommended to me from a number of guests on this podcast, I frantically tracked down the book and read it and was blown away. I was intrigued to meet the woman behind the stories that had resonated with myself and so many others. I reached out to Rachel and she was generous enough to give me this time. Rachel is a mother of two. And in this chat we talk not only about her books, but the challenges she faced in making them. The divided heart is a collection of interviews with artistic mothers, including musician Clare Bowditch and actress Rachel Griffith. Rachel's interviewees had such diverse experiences when combining motherhood and art making.Rachel's book “The Divided Heart: Art and Motherhood”, has suported and inspired so many of my previous guests, and I just had to speak to the woman behind the book.We chat about the book, why motherhood absolutely has to change you, the importance of having your sense of experience validated, why mothers are shamed for sharing their struggles and negative experiences, and breaking the patriarchal stereotypes around the way artists create.Rachel instagramPodcast - instagram / websiteQuotes spoken throughout this episode are taken from Rachel's book 'The Divided Heart - Art and Motherhood'.Music used with permission from Alemjo., Aussie new age and ambient music trio. When chatting to my guests I greatly appreciate their openness and honestly in sharing their stories. Mick Young (aka Young Werther) makes music that wraps you in its arms and slowly seeps into your skin. From the gently finger-picked guitar through his more rollicking moments, to the poetic shivers of his beautiful voice, this is glorious modern folk music for the soul, with a distinctive Australian bent. Mick began his career with Melbourne indie folk/rock band The Restless in 2000 writing all the songs on their critically acclaimed 2004 self-titled album. The album received nationwide radio coverage on Triple J (Australia's national network) and 3 singles from the album were named “King Pick” by Australia's top radio DJ, Richard Kingsmill. After 3 EPs and one album, The Restless went their separate ways in 2006 and Mick became a solo artist under the name Young Werther. In 2008, he released the beautifully haunting, autumnal Treasure mini-album which was named in Beat Magazine's “Singles of the Year”. This success led to shows with some of Australia's biggest names including Paul Dempsey (Something for Kate), Kate Miller Heidke, Clare Bowditch, Katie Noonan and James Reyne. After extensive touring Young released Knights of the Department Store (Popboomerang Records) in 2010 and was named Triple J “Feature Artist”. Mick has recently moved to Europe and now England to grow his fan base there and is working on a new album. It's been almost 20 years since we first met Clare Bowditch. Back in 2003 she grabbed our attention with her brooding debut single “Human Being”. This writer was one we wanted to hear more from, and over the years we'd hear Clare craft many more beautiful songs, star on TV in “Offspring”, and become a leader in the music community as a collaborator and mentor. Until now though, we didn't really know what came before that first song. But last year Clare Bowditch wrote her memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl, and opened up a childhood story she'd never shared before. That turbulent beginning is why I gave her the theme hurricane songs; music that upended her, turned Clare's world from black and white to technicolour, and ultimately, gave her a sense of renewal. From Donny Hathaway to Bjork to Stella Donnelly, we heard how music had been a commanding force and steady hand throughout her formative years. And how songs had given her the strength she needed when the walls were closing in. This is a beautiful conversation; as much about the healing power of music as it is the kindness we can, and should show ourselves. When Clare Bowditch was 21 years old, she made a promise to herself: that she would one day write a book. The promise came during a period of unrest, unworthiness, and uncertainty for the now musician, actor, radio presenter and entrepreneur. There was one particularly comforting caveat to this promise: that she would wait until she was in her 40s to write it, when it was all behind her.Fast forward two decades, and Bowditch has written that very book, Your Own Kind of Girl published by Allen & Unwin. It’s the result of patience and a promise, and the overlooked art of relinquishing pressure from our life ambitions. In this debut episode of Routines & Ruts, Clare Bowditch discusses taking it one step at a time, the book writing process, and how letting go can bring us the most extraordinary experiences.Read the full show notesBecome A Routines & Ruts Companion to read the full transcript Your Own Kind of Girl  by Clare Bowditch * * *To stay tuned, please subscribe or follow the podcast on your preferred listening platform and leave a review on iTunes. You can also sign up to the Extraordinary Routines newsletter, or follow along at @extraordinary_routines on Instagram.Special thanks to: Nelson Dore for the theme music, Scott Stronach for editing, Ellen Porteus for the cover art.

By the end of this episode, we’re betting you’ll have a name for it.Today’s guest, ARIA-award winning singer Clare Bowditch, calls that voice Frank. When she was younger, she had to tell Frank to f*ck off quite often. Nowadays she has a more polite relationship with him, where a simple ‘no thanks’ will do, but it took her a long time to get there. In this chat with WH deputy editor Lizza Gebilagin, Clare gets honest about her struggles with mental health and the stories she shares in her memoir Your Own Kind Of Girl (Allen & Unwin, $29.99). We talk about the strategies that have helped her cope with anxiety, including more on Frank, how she learnt to love her body after going on her first diet at the age of 10, and how she turned her life around. As she writes in her book, “What starts as a breakdown really can become the moment you look back on as a breakthrough, as the moment in which you started to live your own kind of life.”Credits:Your host is Lizza Gebilagin, @lizza_marieWith thanks to special guest Clare Bowditch, @clarebowditchYour producer is Jake TaylorIf you’ve been affected by the themes in this episode, book in for a chat with your GP. As part of her national tour to promote her debut book, your own kind of girl, Clare visited Byron Bay and made space for this talk. Only two friends catching up could pack this much love, honesty, tears and laughter into half an hour. In the process of writing her book, Clare has confronted the pain and suffering of her 20s, burdened by a deep sense that she didn’t deserve to be happy and coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. A book recommended to her by a family friend explained her mental suffering in a way she could process and provided a coping mechanism. Her recovery and the moments of respite granted her the permission to be courageous. And she hasn’t stopped. Enjoying her second bite at life. Clare Bowditch is an ARIA award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, storyteller, educator and mother of three. And this month, she's added ‘author' to that impressive list of credentials! Following on from Ashe Davenport's insightful interview with Clare for our Family column last week, today the radiant songstress herself makes an appearance on our podcast! She chatted to Lucy about making it in the music biz, keeping the magic alive with her husband and long time collaborator, Marty Brown, and sharing a lifetime of learnings about self-doubt and anxiety, in her brand new book, ‘Your Own Kind Of Girl‘. I first met Clare Bowditch around 10 years ago, and since then have watched her career continue to rise, and also, adapt and morph over time. In the past decade she's turned her hand to so many different creative projects… and it seems there's nothing she isn't good at! She won a logie for her role Offspring, she spent two years presenting ABC radio, she's hosted workshops and events for creative people, and now… of course, she's finally released her first book! The book, of course, is ‘Your Own Kind Of Girl', and it's a memoir of sorts. Clare's passionate followers will know her as a ‘heart-on-the-sleeve' sort of person, and that's very much apparent in this book – and in our podcast conversation! This is a very candid chat about all the things that have led Clare to where she is now, and to the release of this book. There really is something quite magical about Clare. She has an uncanny knack for making you feel like the centre of the universe when she's speaking to you. We very much hope some of that magic comes through in this podcast! She is also the Editor in Chief of the fabulous Inspired Coach Magazine. Julie lives in Melbourne with her husband, stepdaughter and two much loved adopted cats. Was not having a child due to a personal choice or circumstance? Julie’s story is a mixture of both. She had always thought that she would have children and be a biological mother, but by her early to mid-30’s she hadn’t met the man who was to be her future husband and she started to think differently and accept the possibility of not being a biological mother.  Around the same time, she started having gynaecological issues. Shortly thereafter, she met her now husband who had a child from a previous marriage. From the beginning, he was honest with Julie that he didn’t want to have any more children, and being convinced that she had found the man that she would be with for life, having children wasn’t as important to Julie anymore.  What was more important was building a great life with her husband and being a good stepmother to his daughter.  Her desire to have children greatly lessened, something she came to very much be at peace with. Overall, Julie felt that not having a child emerged to be due to her circumstances, but in the end became a life choice. “The experience of being a woman in the 21st century is so very different to what it was like.” In deciding not to be a biological mother, were there any processes that you had to go through? There was an interesting response from a friend and her mother and Julie had to think very carefully if this was something she would regret. She spent a lot of time by herself and had to dig deeper within herself, as she realised that she needed to be the one who had to be okay with her decision. Julie has always been taken aback with people’s response when they hear that someone has decided not to have children, noting that it is interesting because they don’t respond the same way if people decide to have children. Some responses Julie has found have been that she might have been compromised in some way and she had to them that she was fine. Julie was most concerned about her mother’s reaction to not having children but it came back as a surprise to her.  She asked Julie, “are you happy?” to which she answered “never ever been happier in my life”, “Well then, carry on with that! Children do not a marriage make. It’s all about your partnership.” On her relationship with her stepdaughter:  Having been a part of her stepdaughter’s life for over 7 years now has been very fulfilling for Julie. Although she does acknowledge that a step-parent’s role is not an easy one at times, she feels very blessed.  A big reason for that is because her husband has always been a great father.  Some people suspect from someone who may not want to have any more children, that they are tired of being a parent or that it was difficult, but that wasn’t the case at all with her husband. He was at a stage in his life where he was very happy forging a relationship with his daughter and just didn’t feel the need to have more. It seems that there may be a lot of young women out there who thought that having a child would fulfill them and Julie wonders that if they had to make the choice over again, if they would have chosen differently. Everyone is different in their perception of what a beautiful and fulfilling life ought to be. It’s obvious that Julie, through her work in helping other women to be life coaches, utilises her own nurturing and mothering qualities in this way. Unfortunately our society tends to look at women without children as: Someone who couldn’t love others; A mean person; A threat in some way; Someone who doesn’t like kids. A definition of a Mother = to give rise to or to produce.  We all do that in different ways. What brings Julie fulfilment in that way?  All life coaches that train with Julie are women who want to birth their own business or emerge as a life coach. She has been able to help others create a business or a life which is surrounded by heart and compassion. Julie feels that this is exactly what she was brought here to do. She feels that she helps people give rise to that in their lives and step out into the world with new found confidence and skills to establish their businesses. How do you support yourself on a physical or mental level? Julie has never been much good with routines. She feels that if she sustains a lovely practice that will keep her topped up. Other things that Julie does to nurture herself: Use oils on her body; Meditation; Warm baths; Good wine; Being outdoors in her garden; Spending time with children; Doing her work. She enjoys meditation but also she surrounds herself with incredible and supportive people. She has already cut ties with those who have brought her down in the past. On social infertility:  there seems to be a growing phenomenon with women who are accomplished in life but can’t seem to find a man who they would want to have a family with. There is a growing group of women who are empowered and well accomplished in life and at the same time, there seems to be more men who don’t want children as well. It’s creating a mis-match. Another issue is that people stay at home longer and struggle to purchase their own homes. There has been a report on the average cost of raising a child to be just under half a million dollars. It is astronomical to raise a child in our society nowadays. On top of the expenses you also have to be the best parent that you can be. We need to be very clear about our life decisions and at the same time respect other people’s decisions. Unfortunately there are still so many people out there who are very judgmental about others decisions to not have a child. On a practical level, Julie is very busy with her business and travelling.  If she had a small child she would have had a lot more to juggle. She realised that if she had had a child, her business would have been very different from what it is now or even potentially may not have happened. On the legacy she wants to leave: the hope that she had inspired people to truly embrace and love themselves for exactly who they are and the choices that they make. She feels that this is really what she needs to do is to help people realise that they are enough. These are people who are natural born givers and helpers. You can find out more about Julie and her work here.
