#59: The Case Against Circumcision with Intactivist Georganne Chapin, MPhil, JD

We kick off our two-part Circumcision series— a topic you all have been begging us to cover for the last two years!— with none other than the Executive Director and Chairperson of Intact America, Georganne Chapin MPhil, JD.There is nothing we shy away from in this episode. Don't worry, we don't walk on any egg shells. While debunking common circumcision myths, like how this surgery helps to prevent UTIs, STDs, and HIV, is fun and intriguing, Georganne reminds us that it's important to shift our focus away from debunking myths (don't worry, we still do!) and instead onto exercising our innate common sense about the necessity of this practice. You'll hear about the origins of this surgery, which countries do it and why, and the undeniably uncomfortable details of the procedure itself. This isn't for the faint of heart, but if you are going to put your son through this, then you should know what it entails, FULLY. Georganne explains why circumcision is not exclusively a men's issue, and why circumcision has a lasting effect on women from the mothers of circumcised sons to the future female partners of circumcised men. Women DO have a voice in the circumcision debate, and soon-to-be moms should not sit on the sidelines while tasking their husbands to call the shots on this permanent, life-altering choice on behalf of their son.We learn about the lasting trauma of the procedure, the function and benefit of foreskin, how the trends and stats have changed over time in regard to the choice to circumcise, and why we prefer the term "intact" over "uncircumcised."Follow @intactamerica on instagramCheck out Intact America's resourcesResources mentioned in this episode:This Penis Business, Georganne's bookIntact AmericaCircumcision, an Elephant in the Hospital Excerpts - the video April references Skin in the Game Event in New York with Alan Cumming April 30th, 2025!Foreskin Day 2025 VideoHealthy Children Foreskin Retraction resourceReport circumcision injury through DoNoHarm.ReportPlease Don't Cut the Baby: A Nurse's Memoir Listen to our friend Fierce Lizzie's episode on circumcision on Unmedicated Girlies podcast hereSupport the showJOIN OUR NEW, PRIVATE COMMUNITY! Co-Host Georganne Chapin (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/intact) This very special episode is part of Podcasthon.org going on this week. It's an international effort to raise awareness for charities of podcast hosts' choice. I am thrilled to participate, and I have chosen to highlight Intact America, which is the foremost campaign in the USA against circumcision of male infants. Georganne Chapin is the Executive Director of IntactAmerica.org. She joins me for a frank and sometimes shocking discussion that will serve to give any and every man 20/20 foresight about foreskin. So what inspired Georganne to become such an activist for a men's cause, and why did she write her book, This Penis Business: A Social Activist's Memoir? Why is the USA basically the only country left on earth that still cuts boys? I mean, given that female circumcision is universally considered mutilation, why is the situation with boys any different? What were the weird myths that brought about the perceived need to circumcise boys to begin with, and how are doctors finally starting to speak up against it? Apart from the obvious pain and trauma needlessly inflicted upon babies, why is circumcision a bad deal for men for our entire lives? What are we missing out on by missing our foreskins? And how is the procedure just another cog in the medical industrial complex? This podcast indeed sheds necessary light on a very real problem that receives FAR too little attention, let alone outrage. The first step is education, and the next step is--of course--leaving our own sons intact. Download all the free goodies and more at https://mountaintoppodcast.com === HELP US SEND THE MESSAGE TO GREAT MEN EVERYWHERE === The content in this show is NEVER generated by AI.

Are you often told that you are too sensitive? Can you intuit things before they happen? Are you an introvert who cares deeply about the people and places around you?Courtney Marchesani is the author of Four Gifts of the Highly Sensitive and developer of the Highly Sensitive Gifts Test. Her insights into sensitivity help readers identify their gifts of intuition, empathy, vision, and expression to maximize their potential, while also learning how former trauma may have shaped them.Courtney's health and wellness coaching style focuses on holistic medicine and finding balance while living with sensitivity. Since sensitivity is closely interconnected within the nervous systems and brain functioning, it is not something to “get rid of.”She is known for her intuitive and empathic style which emphasizes acceptance, learning how sensitivity's silent effects can impact mental, emotional, spiritual health and wellness. Allow your sensory intelligence to shine and relish your profound ability to connect with the world by recognizing and honoring your unique gift of sensitivity.Tune in for this philosophical conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here.Show NotesSegment 1Today's episode starts off with a small heartfelt story from our host Georganne about how she herself is a sensitive person. Judi agrees that she too is, as she introduces today's guest: Courtney Marchesani. The three talk about the stigma of being sensitive and Courtney goes on how she chooses to see being sensitive as a positive. Using studies to support her beliefs, she explains how being sensitive can be a beneficial and positive trait instead. She explains about how medical professionals and school teachers are starting to become more aware about sensitivity, but there is still a lot more to learn and embrace. Sensitivity is a powerful ability to be able to feel more complex emotions to achieve more intuity and other abilities. Courtney explains why she wanted to write her book to help people with their own individual journey to understanding their sensibility and ownself. Courtney then goes on to explain in depth the four different types of sensitivity: intuition, empaths, visionaries, and expressives.Segment 2Coming back from break, our hosts share their MBTI personality test results and their initial reactions to their results. Courtney explains the types of sensitivities in more depth as she gives examples to help the audience understand what makes each type so unique from each other. The three talk about how their religious beliefs and personal trauma and fears relate to their type of sensitivity. Courtney uses research studies that help us understand the science behind how there are psychological changes that showed how people seemed to become more intuitive through trauma and intergenerational experiences in families. The three discuss scientific discoveries overtime has shown how our genes can be changed by trauma and show how our understanding of ourselves inside and out will continue to change and grow over time.Segment 3Coming back, Courtney explains how attachment to parents as children can make the children more sensitive and intuitive. The amount of attention parents give to a child and how present they are, can greatly affect a child's sensitivity. It can be considered a form of trauma if children aren't receiving enough attention, as they are going to be constantly searching for some sort of attachment. Courtney explains what people who are sensitive should do. They should figure out their own energy before trying to understand others' energy. The people that someone surrounds themselves with can greatly influence their energy in both negative and positive ways. After figuring yourself out, that is when you can begin to self love and work on yourself to become more resilient. Courtney describes what sensitive vision is and how it can go beyond the physical. They end this segment with a breathing exercise that helps calm anxiety and negative emotions.Segment 4They start the last segment talking about paranormal activity. She explains the misconceptions that come with the word “paranormal” and explains how these activities don't necessarily have to be like the extreme and scary ghost stories and movies. Our hosts share an out of body experience they have had and Courtney explains what had happened in the moment. Courtney shares with the audience where they can find her book, Four Gifts of the Highly Sensitive, and connect and keep up with her on her website where people can take a test to see what type of sensitive they are. Courtney is available for consulting and teaches courses as well. Tonight's episode ends in a special prayer.

Consumer anthropologists, Rich Kizer and Georganne Bender, discuss their watershed moments and how the pandemic has changed the retail landscape for the better. Despite the rise of eCommerce, Brick & Mortar is here to stay.  KEY TAKEAWAYS We are at a fork in the road moment for many businesses right now.  Another fork in the road in retail was when Big Box retail entered the US retail landscape, especially for small town retailers.  It required a shift in thinking. Stores are living organisms — constantly changing. You think you're in control of your business and of your life — you're not! The pandemic has forced all of us to rethink who we are, what we do, and how we do it. It will make all of us better in many ways.  This is not the “new normal.” It's the “now normal.” Future of retail: Once an online retailer hit's a certain plateau, it is too expensive for them to grow sales online without a brick and mortar platform. Visiting a store is the “icing on the cake” for customers. Buy Online Pickup In Store will be a large driver for brick and mortar. Shopping is social - that will never go away. People are looking for experience, and for many products they want to touch and feel things. How is the consumer changing? Customers have always held the cards, but since COVID they hold every single card. Retailers have to figure out how to engage them and keep them loyal. Where consumers go will depend on what the retailer does to attract them - BOPIS, curbside pickup, and other conveniences, as well as how the store keeps them safe.   To contact Rich and Georganne, you can reach them at info@kizerandbender.com. Consumer anthropologists, Rich Kizer and Georganne Bender, discuss generational diversity and the retail experience with Clint O'Rear. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a supplier or retailer, it is important to understand the changing needs of your consumer base. One of the biggest demographic trends in America is the aging of the population, and many retailers and suppliers fail to think about what changes are necessary to adapt to the needs of these aging consumers. Georganne - “You have to adapt to what each generation needs, when they need it - not when you think you're ready to do it.” Rich - “You have to be a mind reader - by watching customer interaction in the stores, and by using the store as a live entity/organism that interacts with you.”  Don't wait 10+ years to check the lumen density of lights Watch how fixtures are set that might create shadows on layouts If you are in a business that interacts with customers in any way, you are in the retail business, but you may not think of yourself as a retailer. (Example: funeral home operators) There's never been a better time to study, learn, create, and impact retailing than in the current COVID environment. It will change the way we look at everything in retail.  Retailers should give their team members in the stores both responsibility AND authority to present the store to the customer in the best way.   SUGGESTED ACTIONS For Retailers: When you are merchandising a section that aging consumers might shop, think about how limitations such as arthritis, vision impairment, and limitations to lifting heavier items can impact shoppability. Use a store layout and shopping aids, like shopping carts and baskets, that will be easy for aging consumers to navigate and use. Check store lighting to see if it is adequate for aging consumers - it takes 3x's the amount of light to see as well in your mid 60's as it takes in your mid 20's. Make your store environment safe for aging consumers - if they feel safer in your store they will subconsciously want to visit your store more often without even fully knowing why. Rotate and change your floor in some way regularly so the customer isn't seeing the same thing.  50% of your store is never seen by customers because they shop on their desired path.   For Suppliers: When you are developing packaging for products that older consumers might purchase, think about layout and font for customers who have impaired vision. Help retailers with creative new products, and creative new ways to display products.   For Both Retailers and Suppliers: Use the current COVID retail environment to assess what you need to change to adapt to the new ways customers are buying and interacting with information.   To contact Rich and Georganne, you can reach them at info@kizerandbender.com. Our guest today is Georganne Moline, and she has a distinction that very few can claim - Olympian. Georganne is a professional Track & Field athlete who represented the USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, running in the 400m hurdles. Her olympic chance came relatively early in her career, while she was still a student athlete at the University of Arizona. Despite that early success, Georganne experienced self doubt and anxiety that were often crippling. If she underperformed, she couldn't handle the disappointment. If she performed well, she was terrified of the standard she was setting for herself. It's these kind of experiences that lead Georganne to be an outspoken advocate for mental health, and the benefits of both therapy and coaching. Her outlook on competition has changed dramatically in the last few years, even while facing some of the biggest set backs and disappointments of her career. I think each of you listening will find that there is incredible value in much of what Georganne has to say during today's conversation, and it serves as further evidence that even when things look perfect from the outside, often times the invisible internal struggles rage on none the less.Connect with GeorganneOn Instagram @georganne400hYour Action PlanYour action plan for the week is this - Many of you have probably heard the saying - You never lose. You either win, or you learn. Cultivating that mindset has been huge for Georganne. And it's what I want each of you to focus on this week. If you experience a situation that doesn't go in your favor, or a project doesn't go to plan - rather than focusing on the “failure”, figure out what you can learn from this situation. No one listening to this podcast is going to lose this week. You are either going to win, or you are going to learn.Until next week, we wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH.

Tristan Taormino welcomes Intactivist Georganne Chapin from Intact America to educate listeners on the anatomy and sexual importance of the foreskin of the penis. No professional medical association in the United States or the rest of the world recommends routine circumcision, yet it’s incredibly prevalent in America. We discuss the debate surrounding routine circumcision in male infants. What are some of the arguments about why circumcision is necessary, and how many of them stand up to fact-checking and science? Does opposing circumcision devalue cultural and religious practices? We talk about what role the foreskin plays in solo and partnered sex and how leaving the penis intact affects people’s sex lives. There has been a global outcry about female genital mutilation (FGM), but not about penile circumcision, a similar procedure—why is that? How does the Intactivist Movement to end child genital cutting intersect with efforts to end FGM and activism to stop doctors from medically intervening when someone is identified as intersex at birth? How does the everyday person bring up the subject with a loved one, a spouse, a sibling, or a close friend? This episode is made possible by Calm and Intensity by Pour Moi. Georganne Chapin has dedicated her life to promoting human rights and fighting injustice. Georganne is a leader in the growing national movement to end routine circumcision of baby boys. Twelve years ago, she co-founded and became executive director of Intact America, the largest national organization working to end child genital cutting in this country and to ensure healthy sexual futures for all people. Prior to that, she founded the Hudson Center for Health Equity and Quality (which she also currently heads) and is the former president and CEO of Hudson Health Plan, a large nonprofit Medicaid managed care organization in the Hudson Valley. She has her MPhil in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University and her JD from Pace University School of Law.

As the creator behind “love Phoenix or leave Phoenix,” she has put her heart and soul into creating what is known as a Phoenix staple. The shop includes a carefully curated selection of clothing, jewelry, home goods and novelty gifts.  Though Georganne was a stay-at-home mom for 18 years and flipped homes for a while after, she was in retail beforehand and also pursued a creative career making jewelry out of vintage pieces for local shops. It was no surprise that she decided to create Frances, a one-of-a-kind boutique.  She has developed personal connections with her makers over the years, fostering relationships. Not only does she personally meet with artists and help mentor them with their brands and small businesses, Geroganne has also created an event to host these vendors called Crafeteria.  The award-winning annual craft fair links artists with the community and celebrates our culture here in Phoenix. It will take place this Friday, December 6th, 2019 from 6-10PM. It will feature 100% handmade and local artists and food vendors. You won’t want to miss it!

Living Healthy in Retirement I am Kathe Kline and I am back with another episode of the Rock Your Retirement Show. Today’s episode is all about living healthy and our special guest is Georganne Schuch, often called as healthy habit master. After going through two extremely difficult pregnancies, which almost put her in a life and death situation, a cardiomyopathy scare, and several other health issues, Georgeanne decided to change her life and help others do the same. The health enthusiast has developed 12 healthy habits set to assist people to make their lives healthy without spending a lot of money. She also updates regularly on her website stepyourwaytohealth.com. Georganne mentioned her 12 healthy habits. They include drinking more water to stay hydrated throughout the day, improving posture and consciously engaging in keeping the back straight. Did you know that watching TV might lead to spine problems? You might not notice but while watching television, we sit or lay down in an awkward position that can harm the spinal cord, which might lead to vertebral problems during old age. Engage in exercises like pulling back your shoulders to maintain a correct posture can help, according to Georganne. Sleep is important in living healthy! Another important part of the set is adequate sleep. Having a simple sleep cycle that consists of at least eight hours of continuous sleep is the very core of her health formula. The health master continued with taking less stress and working things out so that you are prepared for the worst. Flexibility is a great advantage in the future Being flexible is another step in becoming a healthy self-aware person. If you aren’t flexible naturally, you can perform yoga or pilates or any other exercise that helps in improving flexibility. If you are a flexible person, you tend to suffer less from joint pains and back pains, which is a blessing in disguise. Exercise and Healthy food is a must! She went on to talk about how staying active and walking whenever possible helps in staying healthy. Instead of taking the car to cover short distances, she advised people to walk or cycle their way there. A protein, good fats, and vitamin and mineral rich diet that contains a lot of whole foods fight off diseases and helps keep the waistline in control. During the conversation, we discussed about how everyone hates vegetables and have no choice but eat them. In the episode, she also talked about personal care product can be harmful to everyone. She said to eliminate as many products as possible and use natural ingredients that are enriched with vitamins and minerals. Relationships Georganne strongly believes in the power of building meaningful and emotional relationships with family and friends. Only when two people share an emotionally enriching relationship, they understand each other become better people and pass through difficult times. When Les and I got married, I told him that I wasn’t good at housekeeping. It was stressful for me because the housekeeper only came home twice a month. With only 24 hours in hand, it is difficult to do household chores especially if you are a career oriented person and have a business that needs complete attention from your side. This doesn’t mean you are running away from things but prioritizing what matters the most to you. Prayer and meditation is something every person should practice daily to reduce mental fatigue and rejuvenate the mind for the next day. She said that practicing meditation and breathing exercises every morning after getting up and every night before going to sleep, reduces emotional and mental stress. Prevention is always better than cure, so engage in activities that keep your help in health. She also mentioned that caring about others is good but everyone should prioritize their own g...

There are so many things to do as the holidays approach. We need to make Thanksgiving dinner, buy Christmas presents, find the perfect gift for our spouse, and dress our cookies so they'll be the shining star on the dessert table! Do you feel the pressure? You don't have to be that stressed because I know where you can find the perfect accessories for all your sweets! Hillary Ramos at The Cookie Countess will show you how to add a little sparkle, stencil a pattern, or airbrush some unique designs to make sure your cookies and sweets will be set apart from the rest. Her store has products you'll love along with tutorials that will help you become a better decorator. Have you seen The Cookie Countess Black Friday Deals yet? You can get a sneak peek and make a plan for supplies you need. I'm sure you're going to find inspiration for all your sweets when you start looking at the products on her site. I feel like Hillary keeps me up to date on new products. Did you know what Roxy & Rich Sparkle Dust Pumps were? I didn't until she showed them on her site. It looks like a great way to brighten a cookie or add a little sparkle to your cakes. I can't wait to try them. Speaking of new tools, the Precision Rolling Pin is my new favorite. Don't get me wrong, I still use my J.K. Adams 19" x 2" Maple Wood Rolling Dowel for pies, biscuits and chasing away bears (not really, I have a cowbell for that), but the Precision Rolling Pin is now the fav for making cookies. The cookie dough is the perfect thickness every time no matter how hard I push down when I roll it out. So Hillary keeping me up to date on products and gives me options for perfect accessories like stencils, molds, food gel colors, airbrush colors and so many things that make me a better decorator.  She inspires me. She helps supply my cookies with personality, sparkle and video tutorials that makes things simple. Thanks, Hillary! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHhwPRK9b6c&feature=youtu.be If you've listened to the podcast I'm sure you've heard how Georganne and I decided to take some money from Hillary's poor husband Jon at Cookie Con 2014. We gave it back, but the look on Jon's face and the joy on Georganne's face were hysterical. So here's a tip for you, if you go to Cookie Con, don't carry your money in your back pocket. Today I'm super excited, because I get to talk to somebody really awesome and I also get to fan-girl all over the place! I'm going to be talking to Georganne Bell, who I know a bit better as Lilaloa, from lilaloa.com. Listen in today, to find out all about this amazing Cookie Legend.   Georganne is from a military family. She's also a mom of four kids, all under the age of ten- which makes her legendary in my mind! She wrote the Cookie Companion book, which came with its own set of cookie cutters and she's also made custom cookie cutter designs for Anne Clark. She's a Cookie Con presenter, she was the Cookie Connection Educator of the Year in 2015, she's a Craftsy instructor, she teaches in-person classes and she also manages to run a blog, pretty much full time and, basically, she's really an all around Cookie Goddess! For those of you who don't know, she started out as a cake baker and then ditched that for cookies.  Listen in and find out about Georganne's amazing career in baking and also how Cookie-ers actually make money. Show highlights: Georganne's transition (which really hasn't actually happened yet) from baking as a hobby to it becoming a full-time business gig for her. How Georganne doesn't really feel legit with what she's doing...  she somehow thinks that for a business to really be legit, you have to hate it. What it would take for Georganne to do a custom order. Where Georganne's main source of income comes from- a toss up between live classes and the advertising on the blog itself. Is blogging really is a way to make money?- Georganne was making just over $1 per month after her first three months and then just over $20 after her first year. The amount of time and effort that goes into blogging, so to make it, you really just have to keep on showing up consistently, until the return eventually comes...maybe... Georganne's experience of growing her blog, while growing her kids.  The three areas that allow for Georganne to feel valued and whole, as a person – her family, her church and her cookie community. Georganne's struggle to balance her time, so that her kids get the best of her and not just the left overs. The importance of being flexible when you're a working parent. If you really want something, do it! You really can be so much more than you are right now! The issues that cookie-ers have that cake bakers don't. How cookie-ers get around the money making issue. Getting over the weirdness of marketing yourself and your product. The best and the worst parts of what Georganne does.  The love or the money? Finding the balance.
