Almost half of New Zealand's public servants are working from home one day a week, according to data released by The Public Service Commission. The IRD and the Ministry for Ethnic Communities have more than 80% of their staff working from home at least once a week. In the Atlantic Ocean, a system of connected currents, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), moves water throughout the world's oceans powered by a combination of winds and ocean density. It not only distributes the ocean's heat, moisture, and nutrients, but regulates the Earth's climate and weather. As the climate is continuously changing and the atmosphere is warming, many scientists fear that fresh water from melting polar ice sheets could significantly disrupt—or collapse—the AMOC. While a decline of the AMOC would have grave consequences, a collapse would be truly catastrophic. In a new paper published in Nature Communications, scientists found that the AMOC has not declined in the last 60 years. Recently, the government has announced a push to get public services working back into working in the office, as opposed to current, alternative methods, such as through working-at-home models, and hybrid working models. This comes as multiple academics from the Victoria University of Wellington are set to release an article in the New Zealand Journal of Employment Relations, discussing the positive findings of a hybrid working model. Further findings in the past have proven claims that a hybrid working model improves productivity, such as a 2023 study from Human Resources New Zealand, which has shown 40% of HR professionals noted positive productivity gains from a hybrid working model. I spoke to the Senior Lecturer at the School of Management at the Victoria University of Wellington, and co-author of the article, Stephen Blumenfeld, about the government's calls to get public services workers back to the office, and the findings from the article.

The last few years have seen a wave of labor organizing as it becomes more and more clear to workers that what they do is not expendable, but actually the heart of every business. From walkouts to unionization, workers from Starbucks to Amazon to your local coffee shop have come together to build and exercise their power. In this episode we explore the issues that led people to organize their workplaces, the ins and outs and ups and downs of the process, and the backlash. On the forefront of the next labor revolution, we visit a coffee shop in Maine called Little Dog whose staff starts a union. Then we talk to Robert Chlala from the UCLA Labor Center about the rise in unionization efforts among service workers and the social and cultural ethos in a post lockdown country that have led to this new wave of the labor movement. The Biden administration canceled debt for nearly 80,000 borrowers; CBO projects less federal debt thanks to immigration, spending restrictions; initial unemployment claims hover around 210,000 for fourth week; existing home sales unexpectedly jump 9.5%.
The Biden-Harris administration just announced a significant step forward in student debt relief, approving an additional $5.8 billion for nearly 78,000 public service workers. The move is part of the ongoing improvements to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program for those who serve in our communities (more info on requirements). With this latest announcement, the total loan forgiveness under the administration has reached $143.6 billion and benefited almost 4 million Americans. The relief includes beneficiaries of the limited PSLF waiver and other regulatory enhancements to the program, marking $62.5 billion in forgiveness for 871,000 borrowers since October 2021. In prior initiatives, that number has only reached 7,000 borrowers. The administration will be reaching out to nearly 380,000 borrowers who are close to qualifying for PSLF, expressing gratitude for their service and encouraging their continued dedication to public service roles.
