Red Flags & The Relationship Spectrum with Jordyn Scorpio

"Communication is the core of everything.” Jordyn Scorpio is the Director of Community Education at SHALVA, the oldest independent Jewish domestic abuse agency in the United States. As part of her Seven Circles program, she helps to educate Jewish couples on abuse prevention, which starts with identifying the differences between healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships, which exist on a spectrum. Healthy relationships include healthy conflict which provide opportunities for both individuals to learn and grow, while at the heart of abuse is a need to assert power and control over someone. This is why listening to your gut instinct–whether you are the one in the relationship, or a concerned loved one—is so important: if something seems weird, it's weird, says Jordyn.    Signs of abuse, however subtle, present themselves early and they can get buried under a lot of confusing messaging. It's easy to be blinded by abusers' high status or social charm, and it's true that even abusive relationships can include a lot of love. Jordyn reveals personality traits that abusers commonly exhibit as well as red flags to look out for when anyone starts a new relationship.    Parents can introduce prevention education to their teenagers, spotting yellow flags and opening up conversations about them. This includes questioning portrayals of love and romance in film as well as appointing a safe adult to confide in. In a world filled with diverse relationship dynamics, understanding and recognizing the spectrum of characteristics from what is healthy to what is dangerous is so important. Jordyn's insights offer not only a guide to navigating our own relationships but how we can support others to create safe and nurturing connections.   Quotes “Conflict can be really healthy. If there's conflict happening, that means that you're both two independent people with independent lives, opinions and voices. And that breeds conflict sometimes. But that's a beautiful thing to have in a relationship.” (12:12 | Jordyn) “What's difficult about the topic of domestic abuse in general is it's hard for people to distinguish between healthy, unhealthy and abusive. It is on a spectrum. And if it was really easy to define, and very black and white, then it would be easy to say, ‘This isn't good, I'm getting out.'” (13:41 | Jordyn) “Trust your gut. If you feel like something was weird, something was weird. We're really trained as young women to not trust our guts and to be the nice person.” (18:15 | Jordyn)  “At the core of it, it is about power and control.  That is the definition. It's about somebody asserting power and control over somebody else. And they just find different tools to do it since the dawn of time.” (25:53 | Jordyn)  “The idea that hurt people hurt people is very relevant in an abusive relationship. All of these people doing this are not sociopaths. They likely saw abuse in their homes and that's how they saw love.” (29:53 | Jordyn) SHALVA Resources and Support: If you are in urgent need of support, SHALVA's Help/Crisis Line is open 24/7, call 1-773-583-HOPE (4673) Learn more about SHALVA: www.shalvacares.org  Follow SHALVA on Facebook & Instagram @shalvachicago Learn more about Seven Circles: www.sevencirclesjourney.org  Follow Seven Circles on Facebook & Instagram @sevencircleschicago   Connect With Leslie: Six Steps to Help Your Teen Cultivate Confidence: https://www.confidencecoachforgirls.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_coach_chronicles/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CoachChronicles/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Blaze Media editor in chief Matt Peterson and actor/producer Matt Marsden join the show to discuss Biden's house of cards collapsing as a damning interview alleges that former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin was fired over a bribe. Shokin alleges that he was fired due to then-Vice President Joe Biden's threat to withhold $1 billion from Ukraine. Shokin claims he was investigating Burisma and says he received no complaints about his work but was fired due to pressure on then-President Petro Poroshenko. The House Oversight Committee said that President Biden lied at least 16 different times about his family's elaborate business schemes. Trump's legal team is scrambling after a court set March 4, 2024, as the date to begin the Washington, D.C., trial against the former president. Prosecutors have alleged that Trump interfered in the 2020 election and the transfer of power. Climate activists with the group Seven Circles learned a tough lesson this weekend after they obstructed the traffic heading into Burning Man, leading to a significant traffic jam on a Nevada road. Their protest focused on denouncing capitalism's perceived inability to effectively address climate change. Ultimately, their demonstration resulted in their arrest by tribal rangers. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Anthony Collins, an incredible advocate for indigenous wellness and a talented photographer. Thosh shared his remarkable journey of personal growth and cultural revitalization, which began on the Salt River Reservation where he was raised. He spoke candidly about the grief and trauma experienced in indigenous communities due to the loss of land, culture, and traditional lifestyles. Thosh also discussed the transformative impact of the indigenous wellness movement and his involvement in the welfare culture initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between modern wellness approaches and traditional cultural practices.  We delved into his personal struggles with alcohol and substance use, and how he found healing and sobriety through the indigenous wellness movement. Thosh emphasized the importance of having a vision for oneself and taking daily steps towards its realization. He shared insights into cultivating indigenous wellness, highlighting the significance of ceremony and acknowledging our interconnectedness with all living things. Thosh's story is one of resilience, determination, and inspiring others to embrace their cultural heritage for a healthier and fulfilling future. About his book The Seven Circles: In The Seven Circles, Luger and Collins share intimate stories from their life journeys growing up in tribal communities, from the Indigenous tradition of staying active and spiritually centered through running and dance, to the universal Indigenous emphasis on a light-filled, minimalist home to create sacred space. Along the way, Luger and Collins invite readers to both adapt these teachings to their lives as well as do so without appropriating and erasing the original context, representing a critical new ethos for the wellness space. Each chapter closes with practical advice on how to engage with the teachings, as well as wisdom for keeping that particular circle in harmony with the others. With warmth and generosity—and 75 atmospheric photographs by Collins throughout—The Seven Circles teaches us how to connect with nature, with our community, and with ourselves, and to integrate ancient Indigenous philosophies of health and wellbeing into our own lives to find healing and balance. —----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE COURSE: Hey there, high achievers! It won't come as a surprise that Indigenous cultures are often overlooked in conversations about health and well-being.  The current anti-meat narrative often demonizes traditional foodways and appropriates sacred rituals and ceremonies of First Nation people into performative, Instagrammable acts or a commercialized product.  Chelsey Luger and Thosh Collins are on a mission to reclaim and revitalize Indigenous health and wellness. As members of Native American tribes, Chelsey and Thosh cofounded Well For Culture, an Indigenous wellness initiative that promotes whole lifeways through ancestral teachings to optimize contemporary Indigenous lifestyles.  This work is not just for Indigenous people. Everyone can benefit from the Seven Circles, their holistic model for wellness. Their book, The Seven Circles: Indigenous Teachings for Living Well, shares the seven interconnected areas of life through lessons from Indigenous teachings and gives practical advice on how to engage with this wisdom.  Episode resources and transcripts are available at www.sustainabledish.com. All hail the king and queen of Hell. Two curses. One prophecy. A reckoning all have feared. And a love more powerful than fate.... From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series comes the dazzling conclusion to the Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy. Emilia is reeling from the shocking discovery that her twin sister, Vittoria, is alive. But before she faces the demons of her past, Emilia yearns to claim her king, the seductive Prince of Wrath, in the flesh. Emilia doesn't simply desire his body, she wants his heart and soul—but that's something the enigmatic demon can't promise her. When a high-ranking member of House Greed is assassinated, Emilia and Wrath are drawn to the rival demon court. Damning evidence points to Vittoria as the murderer, and she's quickly declared an enemy of the Seven Circles. Despite her betrayal, Emilia will do anything to solve this new mystery and find out who her sister really is. Together Emilia and Wrath play a sin-fuelled game of deception as they work to stop the unrest that's brewing between witches, demons, shape-shifters and the most treacherous foes of all: the Feared. Emilia was warned that when it came to the Wicked, nothing was as it seemed. But, have the true villains been much closer all along? When the truth is finally revealed, it just might end up costing Emilia her heart.

What keeps someone working ten hours a day, in a field, under the hot sun, for as little as $3 an hour? While putting up with verbal and physical abuse? And sleeping at night in an uninsulated shipping container? And how can this be happening in present-day Australia? The answer is well known, well studied, and Australia walked into it with our eyes wide open. The answer is what we call, The Seven Circles of Temporary Migrant Worker Hell, and what researchers call the descent into a "guest worker state".In this second of a two-part show, Shane Roulstone, National Organising Director with the Australian Workers' Union (AWU), Dr Chris Wright, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Business School, and Sherry Huang with the Migrant Workers Centre, explain how we got here, how it could get worse, and what we can do about it.Part 1 of our investigation into the use and abuse of temporary migrant workers, can be found here:https://www.3cr.org.au/suwa/episode/uwfb-seven-circles-temporary-migrant-worker-hell-part-1 Show notesA guest-worker state? What's worse than not having a job? Try working in slave-like conditions.Uncovering the lie that unemployed Australians are “too lazy to pick fruit” exposes the use and abuse of temporary migrant workers. In this first of a two-part show, we hear eye-opening stories from Kate, Sherry and Tex. Kate has been picking fruit and vegetables for about three years now. Kate trained as a computer engineer in her native Taiwan. With a background in sociology, Sherry Huang came to Australia as a backpacker, and now works at the Migrant Workers' Centre. We also return to a conversation Kevin had back in December 2020, with his mate and gun-picker, Tex Stone.Reports and rumours going back to the early 2000s consistently warn that the vast majority of horticultural workers earn less than the minimum casual rate, some as little as $3 per hour. This is so widespread some commentators describe wage theft as a business model.CONTENT WARNING: Mention of sexual harassment between 32:30-35:00 Show NotesMigrant Workers' Centre88 Days A Slave - documentary projectTowards a durable future: tackling labour challenges in the Australian horticulture industry by Joanna Howe, Stephen Clibborn, Alexander Reilly, Diane van den Broek & Chris F Wrighthttps://www.sydney.edu.au/content/dam/corporate/documents/business-school/research/work-and-organisational-studies/towards-a-durable-future-report.pdfCreditsTheme music:One in Ten by UB40Music:Hall of the Mountain King by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200072Artist: http://incompetech.com/Gavotte En Roundeau 4th Lute SuiteExzel Music Publishing (freemusicpublicdomain.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/orangefreesounds.comSound effects permitted for non-commercial use under license“Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0)”

Do you know your Seven Circles? In life, there are seven key areas that deserve our focus and attention: Our spiritual life, our physical health, our personal life, our key relationships, our job, our business, and our finances. If you're listening to this show, you probably naturally focus on your job, your business, and your finances. The problem is, those three areas are like rubber balls. If you drop them, they bounce back. The other four areas are more like glass balls. If you drop them, they can be scuffed, cracked, or shattered completely. In this episode, we focus in on one of those areas, key relationships. The truth is, we can naturally give our professional life so much attention that we don't show up purposefully in the relationships that matter most to us. Susan Scott is the author of Fierce Conversations, which we've highlighted in the past. Her newest book, Fierce Love, takes those principles and applies them to your romantic relationships. Among many other things, she teaches us that relationships fail gradually, and then suddenly. This is an important conversation for all of us.We hope that this helps you begin to have the conversations you've been meaning to with the people in your life that matter most. Identify The ONE Thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary. That could be picking up the book, Fierce Love, or having that first conversation. Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

When J&N first learned how to invest in property and teach others how to do the same, life was simple. Buy and hold or buy and rent out.   In The Show Nicola describes the chaos and carnage at Kalamata airport during holiday time as one of the “Seven Circles of Hell”. You are alright coming in, apparently, but be warned…long queues in the sun to have your passport scanned on the return trip. Judith has moved into some serviced accommodation near Gatwick for eight nights, which property has prompted this week’s Focus.   What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith is inspired by re-sharing a memory on Facebook from a year ago, a post by Robert Craven who is the Founder of Grow Your Digital Agency. Nicola has been on the receiving end of what looks at first glance to be very bad news – Facebook shutting all her ad accounts. So she’s motivated now to study all the other ways of paid ads, Google AdWords, YouTube Ads etc.   Focus Of The Week When J&N first learned how to invest in property and teach others how to do the same, life was simple. Buy and hold or buy and rent out. But in 2019 there are so many other ways to make money from property ownership now, including holiday rentals, Airbnb, nightly rentals for those in housing need, agents becoming tenants and selling the accommodation on to the highest rental bidder, rent to re-rent, and serviced accommodation to name but a few. Judith and Nicola talk through some of the options they’ve seen and heard about and encourage thinking about how to improve your ROI by regarding property as a business, not just the more traditional investor/landlord. Perhaps you can even be hands off in your property business?   Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Adapt and Judith picks Idiot.   Project Updates Nicola reports that Own It! podcast download numbers are up to 3534 for June over 2675 in May and the most popular show was Louise’s Getting Out of Your Own Way. Judith is discovering that moving house endlessly is a project in its own right and that householder’s fussing and fretting and lengthy written instructions are often in inverse proportion to the length of the stay.   Who Or What’s Impressed Nicola received some timely tips from her mentor James Schramko and Judith from Abraham-Hicks’ daily e-newsletter.   Thanks for listening! How to Track the Progress of Reaching Your Goals

How are you tracking your numbers and your accountability? A lot of times in our business, we talk about a tool called the 4-1-1. If you’re like me, I’m always challenged to figure out what should be on my 4-1-1. With my team members, it’s always confusing and clarity is often needed. The 4-1-1 is important in your weekly and daily accountability, but how do you even build a 4-1-1? “You take your one-year goal, then break it down to a one-month plan, and within that month, you break it down to four weeks.” A great reminder and tool is the book, “The One Thing,” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. It’s an amazing book to read to help you become super clear on your goals. There’s a section in the book called “The Seven Circles.” Unsurprisingly, it’s a diagram featuring seven circles which each person needs to fill out according to the following areas of their life: Spiritual life Physical health Key relationships Job Business Finance The section lays out what is called “goal-setting to the now.” That means taking our dreams of the future and somehow chunking them down to one-year goals. The one-year goal is how 4-1-1 works: You take your one-year goal, then break it down to a one-month plan, and within that month, you break it down to four weeks. With that, I challenge you to do this exercise. Take out seven pieces of paper and write out each of the categories at the top. For each, write down what that area would look like in your wildest dreams, if you could live your perfect life. I like to write out some phrases about what matters to me in each category. Highlight a couple from each, and then repeat the exercise: What would you have to do within five years to make those goals a reality? Then cut it down even more: What would it take to make it happen within the next year? Create measurable goals so you can track your own success throughout the process, and live your very best life. If you have any questions or fun tips related to goal-setting to the now, your GPS, or your 4-1-1, please feel free to reach out to me. I’d love to hear from you.

Over five years went into researching and writing The ONE Thing, and one of the things we discovered was that, on average, it takes 66 days to form a habit. That means you can form up to five life-changing power habits every year... but how many power habits have you acquired over even the past five years? Most of us haven't formed very many, and that's okay. Today you have the opportunity to intentionally decide which habits you will form, and narrow your focus to the ONE you want to acquire first.   The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: We hope you'll celebrate episode 66 with us by picking just ONE of the three power habits we described and starting your own 66 Day Challenge. You can download your own 66-Day Calendar for free at the1thing.com/66daychallenge.   In this episode you will learn... [5:25] The 1st Habit: How to act in order of priority. [10:30] The 2nd Habit: How to schedule time with yourself to do your most important work (and protect it). [19:40] The 3rd Habit: How to think BIG and act small.   AWESOME FREE RESOURCES FOR YOU!
