On March 24, 2016, Garry Shandling — the trailblazing comedian who reshaped the landscape of television comedy in the 80s and 90s — passed away at age 66 after suddenly collapsing at his home. Known for his innovative blend of self-deprecating humor and sharp industry satire, Shandling left behind a legacy that forever altered the way we think about sitcoms and late-night TV. Beyond his on-screen brilliance, Shandling's introspective approach to comedy and life inspired a generation of performers to explore vulnerability in their art. They discuss Shandling's eventual appearance on ‘The Tonight Show' and then the development of his groundbreaking sitcom “It's Garry Shandling's Show”. They then discuss how he followed this up with another landmark show “The Larry Sanders Show”. Later, they discuss his final projects and his untimely death in 2016. Hey now, no parties! Intensely private Larry doesn't want the entire staff to be invited over for a dinner party. He's too worried that his wife will tell them about how they first met; how he wanted to have sex on the first date; how they wound up just “dry humping on the couch” that night; or how Larry might be ending the Sanders show to retire to Montana. Enter real life Shandling neighbor Martin Mull who invites himself to the party and hits on Hank's date. To pour more lemon juice into his open wounds, Jeanne Sanders tries to get Hank to switch his call from “hey now” to “come here.” Larry tries to watch his alcohol intake and clears out his medicine cabinet so the staff will not find out about what a huge fiend he is. And, what about the real Garry Shandling? Was he “maybe high the entire time” as referenced in The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling? And what's with Alec Baldwin and photogs? Can he keep his hands to himself or will he be charged with murder? Find out on the all new “Only Murders in the Building” episode of The Larry Sanders Show. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We hard cut to Ivan and his arc reactor and we're overjoyed to get Irina and the Hammer back with us. Justin is taking the good Senator out for golf on the wrong side of the country.

The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling & Kurosawa's Ikiru: Purpose, Regret, & Redemption On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ramos goes it solo in The Fortress of Ultimate Darkness to talk Judd Apatow's 2018 HBO Documentary on The Life, Struggles, & Career of Garry Shandling (November 29, 1949 - March 24, 2016). Apatow had incredible access to the comedian's life, having known him for nearly four decades, and The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling is probably the most in depth understanding of Shandling's art, life, and spiritual self. It's a wonderful examination of the life of one of the greatest stand-up comics of all times . . . his personal, artistic, and spiritual struggles. Ramos pairs this episode with Akira Kurosawa's 1952 Ikiru, featuring a touching and brilliant lead performance from Kurosawa stock player Takashi Shimura as an almost anonymous political bureaucrat who discovers he is dying from stomach cancer and becomes consumed with finding purpose for his life. These are two films that have affected Ramos deeply, an emotional and thoughtful discussion of these two films which he hopes you enjoy. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. As always, Thanks for the Continued Love & Support.

About Bronston: He’s played many of the top clubs in US and UK. Bronston’s stand-up has been featured on Rooftop Comedy and ComedyTimeTV. He portrayed a Bad Egg in a funny animal rights ad for Australia. He riffed randy reasons to raise money for oil spill clean up for UNF–KTHEGULF. Dennis Vernacchia, N6KI, was an active ham who was drafted by the US Army and sent to Vietnam at the height of the war in the late sixties. This is an amateur radio story where Army MARS, ham radio, and the skills acquired from the hobby literally saved his life. This situation and his relationship with a later prominent television comedian brought relief and comfort to American soldiers serving in Vietnam and their families. Dennis is an active contester and tells the rest of his story in this QSO Today.
If you looked up the phrase "comic's comic," Wayne Federman's name should appear. For decades after the late great Gary Shandling cast Wayne as his brother in Larry Sanders Show, Shandling remained close friends with Wayne. While Federman is presently touring with Judd Apatow and has done so with Jimmy Fallon, and writes for both comics as well, he has started to compose theme music. After appearing in and on over fifty hit movies and television shows, including Legally Blonde, Knocked Up, X-Files, and The New Girl, Federman had no idea he'd become the composer for the new Employee of the Month's theme song! Dreams, you never dared to dream, can come true. Even though Wayne has worked throughout his career, we spoke about the uncertainty that befalls any artist. For more about Employee of the Month, go to www.employeeofthemonthshow.com and follow host @catielazarus on Twitter. This episode was produced by Rob Schulte(https://robkschulte.com)
Peter Chelsom is a writer and director of many films and has worked with some of the all time greats. He was kind enough to come and talk with me about his impressive life and career and talk about some of the highs and lows of a career in movies. We talk about critics and how they are hurting the industry, his childhood in northern England, the loss of both his parents at a young age, studying acting, his transition from acting to directing, having children, getting married twice, working with acting greats like Jerry Lewis, Garry Shandling, John Cusack, Jennifer Lopez, Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy, Richard Gere, Miley Cyrus, Lee Evans, Kate Beckinsale, Ned Beatty, Warrens Beatty, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Gary Oldman, and many more!! Plus showing one of his movies to Princess Diana, removing images of the Twin Towers from a film after 9/11, the many problems filming Town and Country, his want to go into television, his friendship with Anthony Hopkins, Bret Ratner, Harvey Weinstein and so much more!!!! Hey now! This week, in loving memory of Garry Shandling, who sadly passed away this month at the age of 66, we weep, laugh, love, squirm, plotz and guffaw along to THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW, the ground-breaking HBO comedy he starred on for six seasons (The less said about the Shandling-less seventh season the better). Also featuring Jeffrey Tambor, Rip Torn, Janeane Garofalo, Jeremy Piven, Scott Thompson and almost every other working comedian or television personality from the 90's, we loved it when we were younger, but how does it hold up now? Can it lift these hearts made heavy with grief? To find out listen below. Also, Subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher. Follow us on Twitter and consider supporting our Patreon campaign. WARNING: this podcast contains strong language and immature subject matter, please be advised.
There are a lot of comedians whose work I'm partial to, but I have a special place in my pantheon for Garry Shandling. He was funny, unsparing, compassionate, psychologically acute and epistemologically astute all at once, an uneasy combination of entertainer and truth-seeker. When I learned of his untimely death on March 24, like many fans I felt bereaved, and I sought out someone to talk to who loved his work as much as I do: Paul Provenza. Paul is a comedian and a sort of comedy curator, chronicler and catalyst, and he was responsible for one of Garry's more memorable public appearances, which I was fortunate enough to attend thanks to Paul. We talked about Garry the person and the performer – and the complicated relationship thereof.
Steve Simeone and I had some dinner, watched a college basketball game, and talked about all the time he spends over at Children's Hospital. He's been going over there all the time for over a year now. He hangs out with the sick kids and just kind of plays with them. And he does it all the time. It's a really nice story.
This week we talk about the great Garry Shandling. From the amazing "Garry Shandling 25th Anniversary Special" to "The Larry Sanders Show". I go into detail about my favorite episodes of The Larry Sanders Show and why they are so important. Your one stop shop for everything Shandling from Dr. Katz to an appearance on, yikes, "Caroline in the City. Hope you like it. :) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
