Today's episode was a chance for Debbie to reconnect with an old friend, Shel Israel, whom she met about 20 years ago… in the blogosphere. Yes, there really was a blogosphere in the early 2000's. Shel and Debbie and a bunch of others were pioneers and they all knew each other. They'd meet at conferences and promote each other's blogs AND explain blogging to everyone else.In early 2006, Shel co-authored perhaps the first serious book about business blogging. And Debbie wrote the second one, published later that same year. Shel's book has a much sexier title, Naked Conversations. Debbie's is The Corporate Blogging Book.Debbie and Shel talk about his decision to leave California after 50 years and move across country to Florida, just in time for Hurricane Ian. Debbie asks how he fared and how he plans to make friends and become part of his new community in St. Petersburg. He's got some surprising answers. As a tech pioneer and an optimist, he considers everyone he meets on social media to be a friend. He's using Facebook to connect and to create a new network. And he's even got a spreadsheet with 13 prospects on it… 13 prospective friends, that is.This is an open and honest conversation which, not coincidentally, is the hallmark of good blogging. They talk about how important writing is to Shel, why he left a lucrative career in PR. and how he approaches tech-business ghostwriting and other projects. The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual on Amazon on Kindle Cluetrain Online The Cluetrain Manifesto on Wikipedia A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter, ...and getting smarter faster than most companies. These markets are conversations. Their members communicate in language that is natural, open, honest, direct, funny and often shocking. Whether explaining or complaining, joking or serious, the human voice is unmistakably genuine. It can't be faked. Most corporations, on the other hand, only know how to talk in the soothing, humorless monotone of the mission statement, marketing brochure, and your-call-is-important-to-us busy signal. Same old tone, same old lies. No wonder networked markets have no respect for companies unable or unwilling to speak as they do. But learning to speak in a human voice is not some trick, nor will corporations convince us they are human with lip service about "listening to customers." They will only sound human when they empower real human beings to speak on their behalf. While many such people already work for companies today, most companies ignore their ability to deliver genuine knowledge, opting instead to crank out sterile happytalk that insults the intelligence of markets literally too smart to buy it. However, employees are getting hyperlinked even as markets are. Companies need to listen carefully to both. Mostly, they need to get out of the way so intranetworked employees can converse directly with internetworked markets. Corporate firewalls have kept smart employees in and smart markets out. It's going to cause real pain to tear those walls down. But the result will be a new kind of conversation. And it will be the most exciting conversation business has ever engaged in. Naked Conversations: How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers From the creator of the number one business blog comes a powerful exploration of how, and why, businesses had better be blogging: Naked Conversations. According to experts Robert Scoble and Shel Israel, blogs offer businesses something that has long been lacking in their communication with customers -- meaningful dialogue. Devoid of corporate-speak and empty promises, business blogs can humanize communication, bringing companies and their constituencies together in a way that improves both image and bottom line. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chrisabraham/support

And I am sure you will hear new things about AR/VR and how this is going to change everything. Enjoy! More About Shel Israel Shel Israel anticipates how tech will impact business processes. Often with Scoble, he is a frequent keynoter, addressing how tech will next impact business and life. He has spent half his career as a tech business journalist at publications that include Forbes, BusinessWeek and FastCompany. His other half was as a tech marketing and communications consultant. He began at the legendary Regis McKenna, Inc., where his first start up was Sun Microsystems. Over the next 20 years he played strategic roles in more than 100 tech startup launches including the introduction of such enduring categories as desktop presentation (PowerPoint) and mapping (MapInfo), PC sound (Creative Labs) and relational databases (dBase 3Plus). SIPR, the agency he founded and ran for 17 years was purchased in 1994 by Ketchum PR where he served as senior vice president for consumer technology worldwide. Welcome to episode #563 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #563 - Host: Mitch Joel. The future of us humans connecting to technology will not be about the web or mobile. It will all take place in some kind of virtual reality. That future is happening faster than most of us would care to admit. Whether it will be virtual, augmented or mixed reality... that is yet to be defined. We're at that unique moment in time. Remember when we were not sure if the web was going to be called the Internet, the information superhighway, the web, etc...? Two thinkers and doers on this, exact, subject are Shel Israel and Robert Scoble. They have teamed up (again) to co-author their latest business book, The Fourth Transformation -- How Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence Will Change Everything. The book looks (deeply and intelligently) at what we're in the midst of right now, and where technology is really taking us. In fact, they're so bullish on this space, that they've partnered to launch a consultancy business called, Transformation Group. With that, many will also recognize these two digital futurists as the co-authors of Naked Conversations and Age Of Context. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 53:42. Robert Scoble and Shel Israel join the Burning Bridges podcast to talk about their new book, 'The Fourth Transformation: How Augmented Reality & Artificial Intelligence Will Change Everything.' Scoble and Israel are no strangers to predicting the future of tech, and in this episode we discuss where VR and Artificial Intelligence are headed, which companies are at the forefront of innovation, and the positive/negative impact it will have on society.
Today we discuss the business impact of augmented reality now and in the future with technology titan and "The Fourth Transformation" co-author Robert Scoble. Augmented Reality: Coming to a business near you “It’s clear that the world is going toward augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality,” says technology titan Robert Scoble. This means lots of challenges and opportunities for business as AR and artificial intelligence become a part of our daily lives. In this interview, Robert shares defining highlights from the three past tech transformations, and how they have impacted business and daily life. He says recent developments in AR have marked the beginning of “The Fourth Transformation.” What does this mean for business, and how can we be a part of it? Should we be? Through each transformation, some of the biggest companies have disappeared as innovative mavericks have taken their place. Staying educated and thinking ahead to your customers’ needs are the keys to surviving this transformation! Join us as we dive into surprising ways AR is already being used, and how forward-thinking companies are preparing themselves for the day when mixed reality experiences are expected. “It’s gonna come!” says Robert, “…you can wait, or you can get in now and do it at a comfortable pace…” Highlights from the interview: What were the first three tech transformations, and what has brought us into the fourth? [5:15] Does Apple have anything up its sleeve to compete with predominantly PC-based systems we're hearing about? [13:25] Which businesses are looking closely at leveraging AR, and who is already using it? [15:38] How do we define goals around responding to a customer need vs. having the latest, sexiest tech? [20:00] What new privacy, security and social issues may come with the rise of VR? [29:10] About our guest: As entrepreneur in residence at Upload VR , Scoble travels the world looking for what's happening on the bleeding edge of technology. He's interviewed thousands of executives and technology innovators and reports what he learns in books ("The Age of Context," a book coauthored with Forbes author Shel Israel, has been released here), YouTube, and many social media sites where he's followed by millions of people. They have worked together on a new book about AR and AI, called "The Fourth Transformation" which you can order on Amazon here. As entrepreneur in residence at Upload, he spent 2016 working with the virtual reality ecosystem to figure out what media and conference businesses Upload needs to build next. He'll also be assisting startups in the Upload Collective (a coworking space) in their efforts to get to market. He has been a technology blogger since 2000, was one of five people who built Microsoft's Channel 9 video blog/community, worked at Fast Company Magazine running its TV efforts, and has been part of technology media businesses since 1993. What makes cause marketing effective? Adam and Jeannie share some great examples of companies that are raising awareness for and donating to nonprofit cause on behalf of their customers. From car dealerships to online merchants, companies across industries are leveraging the power of cause marketing. But cause marketing has become very common. So common, in fact, that many cause marketing campaigns go unnoticed by customers and rendered essentially ineffective. Can cause marketing still help your brand forge customer loyalty and help improve your brand image? The answer is yes! But you have to be willing to put your heart into the project and go beyond the generic “10% of proceeds goes to [worthy cause]” banner on your product or website. Adam and Jeannie outline the key elements of a cause marketing campaign that grabs attention and becomes part of a memorable experience customers will want to talk about. What are smart brands doing to create outstanding cause marketing campaigns? Listen in and learn from the best! In this episode of the Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcast, we chat with Shel Israel, author, journalist, and “recovering publicist,” whose new book, Lethal Generosity: Contextual Technology and the Competitive Edge, discusses what companies [Read more...]
A Superstorm of Change Shel’s latest book, Lethal Generosity, borrows its name from the concept that when a company is incredibly generous to their customers, competitors’ efforts to hijack the customer are preempted. Customers have more power than ever. Technology has put customers “in their rightful place at the heart of an organization, rather than on the outside”, and has created, as Shel puts it, a “superstorm of change”. Social media has empowered consumers to demand the experiences they desire. What does this mean for the future—of companies, communication, and the world? The future belongs to millennials, says Shel, and it is in their hands to make reparations and "fix the world." They are the first generation of ‘digital natives’ coming of age to a planet that has a lot of problems, and the technology at their fingertips will be the tool they use to network and solve problems. Shifting Business Models This limitless power of connectivity and communication offers millennials seemingly infinite resources for collaboration. Shel introduces the topic of Keiretsu, a Japanese practice of forming and sharing networks and resources to gather power and problem-solve. Many companies around the world are now building keiretsus, and these teams are going on to shift the traditional business model to a newer, more sustainable format. This phenomenon is evident in cause-marketing efforts from brands like TOMs, Warby Parker, and more. Shel Israel, Cross-Disciplinary Communicator Shel Israel is a best-selling author concerned with technology and the impact it has on business and life. He has been a keynote speaker “on all continents not covered by ice” and a contributor to Forbes, Fast Company, Business Weekly, and Business Insider. He began his extensive career as a newspaper reporter, then moved on to become a PR executive in Silicon Valley; he rounded out his career by working as a publicist. He currently writes and speaks full time. He brings his cross-disciplinary viewpoint to the podcast today to discuss the future of company identity and branding. Thanks to John Piercy for leaving a message and requesting Keith Burtis, Mark Blevis, Tod Maffin, and Thomas Hawk. Check those guys out! Mark resides in Knoxville, Tennessee, just a few hours down the road from my home in Nashville. He explains how he round up sitting next to Randi Zuckerberg and Kristin Chenoweth during SXSW Interactive. We talk about networking at SXSW and how it has changed over the years. Mark's SXSW presentation was about "content shock". Read more about this on Mark's blog. "In the US, we spend 10 hours a day on average consuming content." The key takeaway is that he firmly believes the next killer app in marketing is to be more human. People want to buy from people they know and trust. "If we can remember that we need to connect in a human way, then I think we are all going to be okay." We discuss how companies should use Twitter effectively. Why a company should use a face over a logo in their Twitter profile. We just spent the last 100 years broadcasting and mass-advertising. Community has been re-created with the virtual town square. "You can't build an emotional connection to a logo". We talk about Chick fil-A and the use of Twitter to build loyalty. When you have someone faking it for you, you're playing with social trust. Mark explains his book writing process for Social Media Explained. He shares the five questions he receives from his clients the most (I do too). Each question is answered in his book: How do I measure this, what's the ROI? Where do I get started? What platform should I use? How do I have time for this? What do I do about negative comments? Mark guarantees you will learn something on every page. We talk about how to get started building your network using social media. Mark shares his love for Twitter. He includes lots of great ideas here. "Twitter is the fastest, most effective way to build a targeted, relevant audience." Follow Mark on Twitter @markwschaefer. Welcome to episode #392 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. When it comes to technology evangelism, it's hard not to think about people like Shel Israel and Robert Scoble. Together, these two co-authored the book, Naked Conversations - How Blogs Are Changing The Way Businesses Talk With Customers, back in 2006. The book was prescient, and was key in helping brands to better understand the power of blogs and how to actually implement a lot of the thinking that came out of The Cluetrain Manifesto (widely regarded as the starting point of social media). Today, these two journalists, bloggers, authors, tweeters, online publishers (and more) are back with their second book that they've done together titled, Age Of Context - Mobile, Sensors, Data And The Future Of Privacy. The Internet is no longer just a more interactive screen than television. It is everywhere. Technology is moving from screens to devices and that's going to change everything. From connected dishwashers to being able to monitor every nuance of our personal health in real-time. These are both interesting times and confusing times. The Age Of Context breaks down these movements, what they mean and why businesses (and individuals) need to start paying attention to them. Enjoy the conversation...
