EPISODE 50 This is great! I am so happy that I have made all the way to 50 episodes. It has been 2 ½ years of episodic regularity with periods of uploading drought. Thanks for joining me on this journey of Forgotten Cello Music, where I have forged ahead with a unique project of featuring unknown cello music, or at the very least, neglected music. This milestone of 50 episodes is reason to for the excuse to feature a piece music which I would consider neglected, although, the composer is far from neglected. I mean, Felix Mendelssohn. He wrote the piece featured in this episode, which he entitled Lied Ohne Worte, op. 109. It is an original composition for Cello and Piano, along with three other originals. From time to time, I arrange certain works that are particularly interesting to me or that lend themselves well to arrangement for cello duet. I have done just that for "Song Without Words", op. 109. I am quite happy with the result and I am confident you will find some enjoyment in it. Please join me for this episode. Thanks for listening and send messages or emails if you have any comments. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/forgottencellomusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/forgottencellomusic/support
Synopsis On today's date in 2001, during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered a new chamber work for violin and piano titled “Tango, Song and Dance.” She had commissioned the work from Andre Previn several years earlier, but its premiere was delayed as Mutter embarked on a project to perform and record all Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. “After doing all those stern [Beethoven] recitals,” said Mutter, “I wanted to play pieces which reflected the basis of musical history, the folksongs and dances which has inspired composers through so many centuries. ‘Tango, Song and Dance' is both modern and old-fashioned, and it touches the heart, especially the slow movement, which is really a ‘Song Without Words'.” And that wasn't the only thing to touch her heart. It was around this time that Previn and Mutter became husband and wife. For his part, Andre said, “I have one piece of advice to composers for the violin – make sure Anne-Sophie premieres your piece. Then you're home and dry, and everything works!” Other composers seem to agree, and Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, and John Williams have all written violin works for Anne-Sophie Mutter. Music Played in Today's Program Andre Previn (1929-2019) –Tango Song and Dance III. Dance (Lambert Okis, pno; Anne-Sophie Mutter, vln.) DG 8143

https://www.waynelinseymusic.com/The consummate musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and artist in his own right, Wayne Linsey's list of credits reads like a who's who in contemporary music. Legendary names like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are among the plethora of artists with whom the L.A.-based maestro has worked on stage and in the recording studio. Super producers like Kenneth ‘Babyface' Edmonds and hitmakers like Whitney Houston and Earth, Wind & Fire always call Wayne to work on their projects; as a touring musician, Wayne spent many years with the ever-popular band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, lending his distinctive and soulful touch as the primary keyboardist to the group's energetic live show. While he maintains a non-stop schedule of touring and studio work, Wayne's focus in 2009 is his first solo project: “As a professional, I've been blessed to work with every artist of my dreams. I also see the purpose of my gift to provoke thought and enjoyment through my own music.” In keeping with an array of personal musical influences – which include Duke Ellington, Parliament, Oscar Peterson, Donny Hathaway, Wonder, Beverly and Davis – Wayne's new project runs the gamut from jazz and R&B to world music and rap: “The album is not based on one dimension stylistically,” he notes. “Diversity is important to me. There's enough material on the CD for the smooth jazz market: as an instrumentalist, that can be your only outlet for radio. But I didn't approach this album the way the industry usually does by favoring one musical style…” As a multi-talented instrumentalist, Wayne plays keyboards, guitar, bass and drums on the record; special guest players include trombonist Fred Wesley, Bobby Brown, Michael ‘Patches' Stewart on trumpet, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, drummer Teddy Campbell., Kevin Ricard on percussion, Hiram Bullock, Paul Jackson Jr., John “Jubu” Smith & Tariqh Akoni on guitars and vocalists Leon Ware, Louis Price Jr., Lamont Van Hook, Sy Smith and Wayne's former wife, artist in her own right, Lynne Fiddmont, among others. Incorporating funky grooves, soulful slow jams and pieces with topical lyrical messages and including “Bookendz,” a tune originally commissioned by Miles Davis which appears on his live recordings as “Wayne's Tune,” Wayne's new CD, “A Song Without Words,” reflects the broad spectrum of music he's mastered since his early days studying at Washington DC's Howard University. Since that time, Wayne's musical dexterity has brought increased work in the television and film area: he contributed to Robert Townsend's popular “Five Heartbeats” movie, worked on “Motown Live” & “Fame” with longtime friend Ricky Minor and in 2003, created music for the Fox network's “Cedric The Entertainer” show, and can be seen regularly on this season's “American Idol” as a member of “The Rickey Minor Band”. Asked on a regular basis to perform at music industry veteran Clive Davis' famed pre-Grammy party, Wayne has also played on the BET Awards, The Essence Awards, The NAACP Image Awards, The Grammys, The Billboard Awards, “The UNCF An Evening of Stars” where he was featured with Nancy Wilson. Wayne was also called on to fill the piano shoes of the late “Ray Charles” in the television tribute “Genius – A Night For Ray”. https://www.waynelinseymusic.com/https://www.facebook.com/wlinsey1https://www.instagram.com/waynelinsey/

I especially love Celtic rock and you have a special hour just on that with bands I’m mostly unfamiliar with! Ed Miller used to host a Celtic segment on Austin’s NPR station, but he NEVER played anything with bagpipes. I have a theory that Ed Miller doesn’t like the bagpipes. But you, Marc, you aren’t afraid of anything!" You're very welcome Robert. That's one of the many things I love about this podcast. The diversity. That is what truly makes America great. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. If you're like Ed Miller or just like Ed Miller's music, he has a radio program called Across the Pond. It comes out on Sundays from 6-8 PM on Sunradio in Austin. And I *think* you can listen to it online. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast exists on the generosity of our Patrons of the Podcast. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Standing Stone & Garden Gate Huge Thanks to Special Guest Actors Damh the Bard Damh the Bard Damh, taking on the role of Gwawl and other parts in the second half of our re-telling of the First Branch, is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find out more about Damh and his work on his website at paganmusic.co.uk or on our Contributor page. Cerri Lee Cerri Lee Cerri Lee, playing the role of Rhiannon, is a multi-talented visionary artist who can turn her hand to almost anything creative. She is inspired by nature, and the ancient Pagan myths and legends of many cultures, her beliefs as a modern day Druid as well as those around her. Cerri is equally in her element when she is up to her elbows in clay or painting one of her fabulous pictures. She is partner to Druid musician and long-time supporter of our show, Damh the Bard and can be found supporting him at many of his performances. Remember, as a kid, playing the old game of telephone? Someone says something, and passes it on. After it goes through 5, 6 or more people, it often comes out very different on the other end. Well imagine if everything you heard had to go through that kind of process. That’s just part of what Gerald Shea went though; dealing with partial deafness since he was six. He still managed to sing, play football and get through Andover, Yale and Columbia Law. Gerald Shea has written about his experience in Song Without Words: Discovering My Deafness Halfway through Life. try { var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-6296941-2"); pageTracker._trackPageview(); } catch(err) {} My conversation with Gerald Shea:
It’s said that Felix Mendelssohn’s sister, Fanny, served as the inspiration for his series of short, lyrical piano pieces called “Songs Without Words.” Fanny herself wrote a few similar pieces, one of which can be heard here.
