Synopsis In 1971, after reading a book about the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, the American pop singer Don McLean wrote a song he titled “Vincent,” which became a big hit the following year. The song is better known by its opening line, “Starry, starry night,” a reference to one of Van Gogh's best-known paintings, entitled “The Starry Night.” But McLean wasn't the only composer inspired by that painting. On today's date in 1978, the National Symphony Orchestra under Mstislav Rostropovich premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a new orchestral work by the French composer Henri Dutilleux. Dutilleux titled his new work “Timbre, space, movement,” but added a subtitle, “The Starry Night,” in acknowledgement of the painting's influence, and said he wanted to translate into music the (quote) "almost cosmic whirling effect which [the painting] produces". Now, painting and music are very different art forms, but the energy, pulsation, and whirling qualities of Van Gogh's masterpiece do find vivid expression, both visual and musical, in Dutilleux's work. As a kind of frame, Dutilleux placed the cellos in a half circle around the conductor, omitted violins and violas from his instrumentation, and alternated static episodes and whirling wind and percussion solos to evoke the illusion of motion in the Van Gogh painting. Synopsis On today's date in 2001, during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered a new chamber work for violin and piano titled “Tango, Song and Dance.” She had commissioned the work from Andre Previn several years earlier, but its premiere was delayed as Mutter embarked on a project to perform and record all Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. “After doing all those stern [Beethoven] recitals,” said Mutter, “I wanted to play pieces which reflected the basis of musical history, the folksongs and dances which has inspired composers through so many centuries. ‘Tango, Song and Dance' is both modern and old-fashioned, and it touches the heart, especially the slow movement, which is really a ‘Song Without Words'.” And that wasn't the only thing to touch her heart. It was around this time that Previn and Mutter became husband and wife. For his part, Andre said, “I have one piece of advice to composers for the violin – make sure Anne-Sophie premieres your piece. Then you're home and dry, and everything works!” Other composers seem to agree, and Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, and John Williams have all written violin works for Anne-Sophie Mutter. Christian-Pierre La Marca releases the first of five albums for Naïve, and it focuses on the solo cello. 'Cello 360' brings together music by Marin Marais, Dowland and Purcell alongside modern masters like Thierry Escaich, György Ligeti and Henri Dutilleux, as well as lighter fare by Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles. Gramophone's James Jolly caught up with Christian-Pierre by video call at his house in Paris to talk about the project and how he assembled such an eclectic programme for this imaginative concept album.

Este jueves hemos disfrutado de dos grandes de la música, la gran violista Isabel Villanueva y el pianista Antonio Galera, quienes han conversado al alimón con nosotros.Isabel Villanueva, habría actuado anoche en Pegando la Hebra, junto a Antonio Galera, pero las restricciones de desplazamiento por la pandemia, no ha hecho posible. Isabel Villanueva, que ya estuvo hace unos meses en nuestro programa, es una artista aclamada por la crítica y galardonada, entre otros, con el Premio El Ojo Crítico de Música Clásica de RTVE, al ‘Mejor Álbum de Música Clásica del Año’ por “Bohèmes”, o el Premio Cultura de la Comunidad de Madrid de Música Clásica 2019, es la primera violista en conseguir estos destacados reconocimientos. También ha ganado con cursos como el Mravinsky (San Petersburgo), el Beethoven Competition (R.Checa). Las excelentes críticas que ha recibido dicen cosas como estas: “ La viola canta y llora en las manos de Isabel Villanueva”, “la convivencia de los graves procedentes de ese Hades mágico de esta intérprete joven, y aun así sabia y artista, con los adelgazamientos sonoros más delicados”, ”…esa delicadeza que no es fragilidad…”, “Las violas no cantan pero… en su manera de interpretar está el canto, el arte de lo tenue, la capacidad de hilar el sonido… parece rozar la magia de los ínferos”. Isabel nos hablado con pasión de su nuevo proyecto Signo, que se estrenará en febrero de 2021 en Sevilla, con miniaturas musicales de Bach y Kurtág, interpretadas por Isabel, que “se fundirá con la partitura corporal propuesta por Antonio Ruz y una dramaturgia coreográfica que navega entre lo onírico, lo poético y lo inquietante. ‘Ella toca sentada, camina, arrastra la mesa, baila, se tumba, grita, se mira al espejo, se desnuda, enciende la luz, cierra los ojos, sonríe…”. Isabel Villanueva, una artista comprometida que siempre va más allá… El pianista y gestor cultural Antonio Galera, galardonado con el Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe y en el Premio Iturbi de València, y cuyo disco debut, "Prélude", ha sido reconocido con el Melómano de Oro, ha estado en el estudio de Plaza radio y hemos tenido el privilegio de que haya tocado en directo, de modo exquisito, una hermosa pieza de Debussy, “La niña de los cabellos de lino”, que nos ha hecho soñar con su interpretación. Cada vez que vivimos estos momentos mágicos en Pegando la Hebra, agradecemos siempre la generosidad de Javier Clemente al cedernos el piano que los permite. El valor de la música en directo es incalculable, de ello hemos hablado con Antonio Galera, así como de su CD “Prélude”, una exquisitez de disco, un álbum grabado en el Auditorio Manuel de Falla de Granada por el sello IBS Classical, que contiene composiciones de Johann Sebastian Bach, César Franck, Claude Debussy y Henri Dutilleux. Concebido por Galera como un concierto “siempre quise que mi primer disco fuera un recital. El estudio era un lugar desconocido para mí y quería acercarme lo más posible a la sensación de estar en una sala, interpretando un concierto", ya ha sido reconocido con el Melómano de Oro y ha recibido excelentes críticas, como ya venía sucediendo con sus conciertos. En el libreto del disco han colaborado Luis Suñén, crítico musical y ex director de la revista Scherzo, y la escritora Elvira Lindo. Con ella le une un estrecho vínculo personal y artístico, así como con su marido, Antonio Muñoz Molina, quien escribió sobre Galera, “Verlo y escucharlo tocar era ser arrastrado por el vendaval de su fervor por la música: casi tanto como conversar luego con él y sentir la fuerza intelectual y física de su curiosidad por el mundo y su disposición de aprendizaje, la mezcla de inseguridad y de obstinación sin la cual no se cumplirá nunca la promesa del talento joven”. La crítica más exigente ha dicho de Antonio Galera cosas como “Sólo un artista curtido humana y pianísticamente puede salir airoso del reto inmenso que supone adentrarse en la última sonata de Schubert, una obra inmensa y profunda, cargada de exigencias expresivas y emocionales, requiere un intérprete dotado tanto de fortaleza pianística como de medios para resolver sus vericuetos técnicos”, “Galera desplegó con generosidad, con el magisterio que le otorga su dominio técnico y su exquisita sensibilidad de artista”, “Antonio Galera ha dado el salto de promesa a realidad con un concierto …el que él brilló con una combinación de seguridad técnica y musicalidad expresiva” Como gestor cultural ha propiciado, entre otros, el Festival dels Horts de Picanya en el que ha participado Isabel Villanueva, que ha comentado la gran conexión que fluyó entre ella y Antonio, que ha dado lugar a su amistad. Augustin Hadelich returns to Benaroya Hall this week to play the Brahms Violin Concerto. In 2016, Augustin won the Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his performance of Henri Dutilleux’s Violin Concerto, The Tree of Dreams, with the Seattle Symphony and Music Director Emeritus Ludovic Morlot. KING FM’s Dave Beck speaks with Augustin about his long association with the Brahms Violin Concerto, a work he first performed publicly when he was just 10 years old. We hear how Augustin Hadelich wrote his own cadenza for the Brahms Concerto, a piece he has recently recorded. We get an informative primer from Augustin on the tradition and history of the cadenza in famous violin concertos. And he talks about the challenges of writing a cadenza in the authentic style of Brahms.

Matthew Sweet talks to the Lebanese-born composer Gabriel Yared, who worked closely with director Anthony Minghella on scores for "The English Patient", "The Talented Mr Ripley" and "Cold Mountain", about his career in film music. Ivan Hewett surveys recordings of music by Henri Dutilleux, a composer with a unique voice who took inspiration from the tradition of Ravel, Debussy and Roussel, but created a sound world of sensuous harmony and colour that was all his own.

Le compositeur Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a laissé seulement 30 oeuvres au répertoire... Mais cette relative concision ne l'empêche pas d'être un des grands compositeurs du XXe siècle. S'inscrivant dans une tradition française de clarté et de transparence de l'écriture musicale, il a laissé de grandes oeuvres parmi lesquelle "Ainsi la nuit", quatuor à cordes (1977), qui s'élabore autour de fragments impressionnistes, de parenthèses, d'anticipations et de réminiscences. Chez Dutilleux, "on ne voit pas les coutures", dit Arnaud Merlin. Elève de Paul Dukas, Dutilleux a connu Maurice Ravel et s'inscrit dans une tradition "debussyenne". Lecteur de Proust, il s'est toujours intéressé au thème du miroir et du double, présent dans toute son oeuvre. "Temps suspendu", le dernier mouvement de Ainsi la Nuit, peut être considéré comme une métaphore de l'oeuvre de Dutilleux... Spécialiste de musique contemporaine et de jazz, Arnaud Merlin est producteur à France Musique (Le Concert de 20h, le mercredi de 20h à 22h30, et Le Concert d'archives dans le Carrefour de la Création, le dimanche de 20h à 21h).
