TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of August 21 and August 28, 2023. MUSIC – ~15 sec – instrumental. That's part of “The Foggy Dew,” an Irish song performed here by Timothy Seaman of Williamsburg, Virginia, with Ann Robinson on Celtic Harp.  In the song's traditional lyrics, fog and dew set the scene for the Easter Uprising in 1916, during the Irish Revolution for independence from Great Britain.  This Water Radio episode's focus isn't on those important historical events, but rather on a number related to fog and dew, and to whether the weather on a summer day feels comfortable or close.  That number is the dew point temperature, or simply the dew point. The National Weather Service gives the following descriptions of “general comfort levels” at various dew points:“less than or equal to 55 degrees Fahrenheit: dry and comfortable;“between 55 and 65: becoming ‘sticky' with muggy evenings;“[at 65 or more]: ...becoming oppressive.” Note, however, that perceived comfort levels at different dew points depend on the climate conditons to which a person is acclimated. Let's explore some of the science of the dew point. Any parcel of air can hold a given amount of water vapor, depending on the air parcel's temperature; air with higher temperature can hold more water vapor.  The term relative humidity refers to how much water vapor an air parcel actually holds, compared to its potential maximum.  The dew point, then, is the temperature at which an air parcel reaches a relative humidity of 100 percent.  Cooling air below its dew point results in water vapor condensing into fog, dew, or some other kind of precipitation; if temperatures are below freezing, the dew point is then considered the frost point. Now, here's the key concept for how humid the air feels: a higher dew point indicates that an air parcel is holding more moisture at any given temperature or relative humidity.  With more moisture in the air, the human body has more trouble evaporating sweat, the process that removes heat and cools the body.  With sweat not evaporating as readily, it feels hotter and more humid; the term “heat index” refers to how hot people feel in combinations of temperature and humidity. Humidity, sweat and evaporation, comfort or mugginess: there's a lot to learn from the daily dew point. Thanks to Timothy Seaman for permission to use this episode's music, and we close with about 35 more seconds of “The Foggy Dew.” MUSIC – ~34 sec – instrumental. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of “Cripple Creek” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. AUDIO NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS “The Foggy Dew,” a 2023 single release, is copyright by Timothy Seaman, used with permission.  It features Ann Robinson on Celtic Harp.  More information about Timothy Seaman is available online at https://timothyseaman.com/en/.  “The Foggy Dew” is a traditional Irish song, whose lyrics talk about the 1916 Easter Uprising, part of the Irish Revolution and War of Independence (1919-1921) against Great Britain.  The song describes scenes of battle on Easter morning taking place amidst “the foggy dew.”  Information about the song is available online at https://www.o-em.org/index.php/fieldwork/62-the-foggy-dew-processes-of-change-in-an-irish-rebel-song. Virginia Water Radio thanks David Carroll, of the Virginia Tech Department of Geography, and Kevin McGuire and Stephen Schoenholtz, of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center and Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources and Conservation, for their help with this episode. Click here if you'd like to hear the full version (1 min./11 sec.) of the “Cripple Creek” arrangement/performance by Stewart Scales that opens and closes this episode.  More information about Mr. Scales and the group New Standard, with which Mr. Scales plays, is available online at http://newstandardbluegrass.com. IMAGES The following two photos of dew and were taken by Virginia Water Radio in Blacksburg, Va., on August 12, 2023, around 8 a.m. EDT, when the dew point and the actual temperature were the same. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT DEW POINT AND HEAT INDEX The following information is quoted from the National Weather Service, accessed at the Web sites noted on August 21, 2023. Dew Point Information From “Dew Point vs. Humidity,” online at https://www.weather.gov/arx/why_dewpoint_vs_humidity. “The dew point is the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%.  At this point the air cannot hold more water in the gas form.  If the air were to be cooled even more, water vapor would have to come out of the atmosphere in the liquid form, usually as fog or precipitation. “The higher the dew point rises, the greater the amount of moisture in the air.  This directly affects how ‘comfortable' it will feel outside.  Many times, relative humidity can be misleading.  For example, a temperature of 30 and a dew point of 30 will give you a relative humidity of 100%, but a temperature of 80 and a dew point of 60 produces a relative humidity of 50%.  It would feel much more ‘humid' on the 80 degree day with 50% relative humidity than on the 30 degree day with a 100% relative humidity.  This is because of the higher dew point. “So if you want a real judge of just how ‘dry' or ‘humid' it will feel outside, look at the dew point instead of the [relative humidity].  The higher the dew point, the muggier it will feel.” “General comfort levels using dew point that can be expected during the summer months:*less than or equal to 55: dry and comfortable;*between 55 and 65: becoming ‘sticky' with muggy evenings;*greater than or equal to 65: lots of moisture in the air, becoming oppressive.” Heat Index Information From “What is the heat index?” online at https://www.weather.gov/ama/heatindex. “

How can rare books and special collections like those held at The Rosenbach speak to modern-day American life? Why are material artifacts important in understanding our cultures' history and future? In the first episode of The Rosenbach Podcast, join host Dr. Alexander Lawrence Ames for an evocative voyage into The Rosenbach's collections of American and British history and literature. Dr. Ames introduces books on The Rosenbach's shelves by famous authors Edna St. Vincent Millay and Sir Walter Scott to consider representations of gender and family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, before reflecting on what the work of Edna St. Vincent Millay has to teach us about the economic and social labor of women—mothers in particular—as the United States grapples with the economic hardships laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic. Celtic harp music featured in this episode was arranged, performed, and recorded by Dr. Ames.

ELUVEITIE Chrigel Glanzmann were the guest of Karim Benamor on an interview during Download Festival Paris on June 15 2018. We spoke about Folk Metal ▬ About Eluveitie ▬ ELUVEITIE are a phenomenon that has been flourishing across the world for more than 15 years. Starting out with their legendary debut album "Spirit" (2006) and the outstanding "Slania" (2008), up to their latest masterpiece "Ategnatos" (2019), the Swiss unit have developed a ground-breaking recipe. As far removed as possible from clichés of drunkenness and silly stories about battles, they have developed a style that turns the best of Folk Metal and Melodic Death into a unique sum. Their great respect for history (which they live out sincerely) mixed with fantastic song writing - results in a sound that hardly anyone can deny the genius of. ELUVEITIE understand how to seamlessly meld unique elements together that may not usually fit. Especially on stage, the various parts morph together powerfully, in an almost spiritual way. The listener is spoiled with a uniquely clear and punchy sound to a unified undertow. The stormy, even primeval power of Melodic Death meets the wonderful, spiritual soul of Folk Metal. The result is thus - original hits that are based on musical class and choruses that are so beautiful and memorable that they take you right back to the distant past of pre-industrial times. ▬ Eluveitie Line-Up ▬ Chrigel Glanzmann| Vocals, Whistles, Mandola, Bagpipes, Bodhran Fabienne Erni| Vocals, Celtic Harp, Mandola Alain Ackermann| Drums Rafael Salzmann| Guitars Jonas Wolf| Guitars Kay Brem| Bass Michalina Malisz| Session Hurdy Gurdy Matteo Sisti| Whistles, Bagpipes, Mandola Nicole Ansperger| Fiddle ▬ About ZanZanA ▬ ZanZanA is the official YouTube channel of the show METAL, hosted by Karim BENAMOR. Scottish-born Maeve Gilchrist writes and plays new music for an old instrument: the Celtic harp, or Lever harp. Gilchrist is a curious innovator who has played, performed, and recorded with the prog-folk quartet DuoDuo and the Grammy-winning Silkroad Ensemble. In her own original music, some of it drawn from a folk and traditional music well, she has worked on sonic explorations of Celtic harp as a rhythmic instrument, which is hard to do because of the Lever harp’s limited ability to control the sustain of a note. (But Gilchrist has found a way to trick the ear by muting the strings with nylon stockings!) She performs her original compositions, including “The Harpweaver” based on poetry by Edna St. Vincent Millay, with the Rasa String Quartet, remotely, for the podcast. Setlist: “The Harpweaver” Chris Stout's “Compliments to the Bon Accord Ale House” / “Ancestral Mud” “The Calm” with guitarist Colin Hearn. The Harpweaver by Maeve Gilchrist

www.moonoverthetrees.com/podcastwjharp.com“Things that we're doing now are going to be the tradition of tomorrow.”William Jackson is one of Scotland's most well respected and sought after performers and teachers of the Scottish harp. Billy's humor and graciousness are a constant as his fans from around the world will agree.Billy's musical journey started with classical piano at the age of 11 and when he became interested in traditional music he took up the mandolin. At 15 he started playing the double bass and bass guitar and joined the band Contraband in Glasgow.Who or what inspired you to play the harp? When Billy was in London he noticed a lever harp in the window of a store that piqued his interest. He had been listening to harpers Alan Stivell, Derek Bell, and Alison Kinnaird. He didn't buy that particular harp, but in 1975 he decided to sell his bass and buy a harp.He played harp, Uilleann Pipes and whistles with the band Ossian for fourteen years starting in 1976. A band that continues to inspire traditional musicians from around the world. Some refer to them as, “The Scottish Planxty”.Like any other instrument the harp is constantly being developed.“It's like a tree and it grows different branches.”Arranging tunes and playing the bouzoukiThe bouzouki has changed a lot. Tuning that's good for Scottish music. only been used in Irish and Scottish music since the 1960s. They work really well with traditional music. It uses open tuning. Like having a drone on the bagpipe with the melody over it. Dance music would not have been accompanied originally in traditional music. That whole sense of harmony has gone onto the harp. Often when playing dance music on the harp and in a lot of the old harp pieces as well, there is so much going on with the ornamentation and variations you actually don't have to do tons [with your accompaniment] anyway.” The melody often speaks for itself and the melody's always telling you what the harmony could be. Scottish tunes are hugely influenced by the Scottish Pipes. On Uilleann Pipes, you can actually block the chanter on your knee and close all the holes and you can actually make a silence, you can even switch the drones off. But, it's the melody that is the important thing. The drones can be continuous But the melody could have actual gaps or silences between the notes, so that's a different style. But, in the Scottish bagpipe to make the second note to make trebles and doubles, you have to use cuts and ornaments to make the rhythm because it's one long continuous sound there's no silence. So that is hugely influential in fiddle music and harp as well.A lot of the old harp music would have a simple melody and a whole series of variations. And that's kind of the form of the Scottish bagpipe, the Pibroch. You're always hugely influenced by every musician you've ever worked with.He is also a music therapist. We talked about how wonderful the harp is for sharing with others in therapy situations and how powerful music therapy can be. He is a multi instrumentalist who started his musical journey learning classical piano, then fiddle, and pipes, among other instruments. He also plays the bouzouki, an instrument in the lute family that is very popular in Greece. It gained popularity in Irish music in the 1960s where it has become a very common instrument to hear in Irish Sessions. Billy often tours and gives harp workshops with his wife, Grainne Hambly as The Masters of Celtic Harp. However during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 they are presenting concerts and workshops online.

moonoverthetrees.comwww.tristanlegovic.eu/My interview with Tristan was recorded on June 4th of 2020 via Zoom from his home in Brittany. Since then Tristan welcomed his daughter Lena into the world. Tristan also has a new album, Dañs, Historical and modern dances from here and there . You can purchase it from Tristan's website here: www.tristanlegovic.euWe chatted about how COVID has united the world and helps us appreciate the people we love and little things even more. People are turning to the arts more and more these days and are playing music, painting, writing more and more.Tristan is working on his PhD on the Breton harpist Kristen Nogues who was a contemporary of Alan Stivell. Alan Stivell was central to the revival of celtic music. In 1971 he released his famous album, “Renaissance of the Celtic Harp”, which is a must have for any fan of Celtic Music; and in 1972 he launched the celtic revival.Kristen Nogues chose a different path from Alan Stivell by mixing folk, traditional, and jazz in her music, which was very unusual in the 1980s In the 1980s. Kristen was a pioneer of the Camac electro harp and developed a very unique sound along with an interesting way of approaching music. She was a pioneer of the Camac electro-harp.When Tristan was sixteen he met Kristen Nogues. Much of her inspiration came from the space she kept in the music which gave musicians a chance to express themselves and share a unique spirit of the music, which was a huge influence on Tristan's playing.Through Nogues' variations, ornamentation, and improvisation she shared her take on the spirit of the music. Music is more than what is written down it's what you do with what is written down. It's about figuring out how it works. There is a link between jazz music and traditional music in these ways of variation, ornamentation, and improvisation.“We are in an open world.”What happens to our neighbors far away affects and influences us.Breton music has changed a lot through the influence of the world on its music. It's still Breton music, but there is a swing of a jazz influence. “The swing goes with the dance.”, as Tristan observes. The harp as an instrument has gone through a type of dance. As it changes and evolves the music being played has also changed. The newer harps can be tuned to A 442 instead of A 440 creating a brighter sound. The levers on the harp move smoother so changing keys is faster. Also the electro harp has influenced musicians and their playing.Development of the electric harp was inspired by musicians wanting to play on stage and be able to be heard. Musicians like Kristen Nogues, Alan Stivell and Deborah Henson conant. The harp makers saw an opportunity for something new on the market. They wanted to make a harp that people could play at home with headphones so they could practice without disturbing anyone. Or for group harp lessons so all the students could be practicing at the same time.Alan Stivell's idea of the electric harp was so his harp could be heard on stage when he played with the traditional Breton instruments, the Bombard and Binioù during the Breton Fest Noz. The electric harp is a very different instrument from the acoustic harp. The basic technique is the same, but the decay on the electric harp is much longer so the player has to control the note more, not unlike the technique used on a wire strung harp. The Fest NozTristan uses two harps when he plays at The Fest Noz, the electric and the electro-acoustic harp when on stage. He is always amplified when playing with his bass player and drummer. Do you ever wish you lived near the Good People? So near, you might hear them, see them, occasionally bump into them? Careful what you wish for…. On this week’s episode we take a sneaky peek at one of the places the Good People call home: Faerie Hills. Through true accounts of those who have lived near a Faerie Hill, or are simply passing by one, we discover that disturbing the Good People, even in ways we consider slight, is fraught with danger. Not to mention the noise and bustle. Some call the Good People the ‘Good Neighbours’. After hearing these tales, you might not be so sure!*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...). This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. Simply click on the ‘Buy me a coffee’ icon on my website and you will be helping to create and produce ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Podcast and YouTube videos. All support is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kitty. ****Message regarding my YouTube Channel*** Have you Subscribed to my YouTube channel? I have a goal! I would love to reach 1,000 Subscribers on the ‘Encounters with the Good People’ YouTube channel. Having over 1,000 Subscribers will allow me to build a ‘Community’ Channel which will make it super easy for me to communicate and interact with viewers of ‘Encounters with the Good People’ on YouTube. If you haven’t already, please pop into my channel on YouTube, hit that Subscribe button and also the ‘notifications’ bell icon. That way you will get a non-intrusive message every time I load up a new video. Nice! And if you know anyone who might enjoy my videos, please Share with them too. I really appreciate your help in reaching 1,000 Subscribers. We are building a friendly, positive, respectful and safe community of folk who not only enjoy all things Faerie, but value nature, art, storytelling and our Ancestors. ***Changes to my YouTube Channel *** It occurs to me that the Good People likely have little care for pesky numbers and lists and all such restrictions (they have better things to do!). So... I am no longer producing my Podcast YouTube videos in order, it's random from hereon in! Dan and I will now lovingly transform our Audio Podcast into a visual feast for your viewing pleasure in a random order. Ever since I first saw Gráinne Hambly perform at The Somerset Folk Harp Festival I've been inspired. No other performer on the harp influenced me as much as Grainne did early on in my harp journey. I first heard her perform at The Somerset Folk Harp Festival and was wowed at what the harp could sound like. The jigs and reels just fly from her fingers. She makes it look and sound so effortless. It's gorgeous to hear. The first album of hers that I ever purchased was, “Between the Showers”. I can't tell you how many copies of this album I have purchased for friends and family over the years. It's still one of my favourites. Here's Gráinne's bio taking from The Harp Agency Website:Since 1998 Gráinne Hambly has been touring extensively throughout the United States and has not only garnered an ever-growing following of devoted harp enthusiasts but has managed to cross over and capture the Irish music fan with the taste for the fast, driving reels and jigs of traditional music. She has broken the genteel parlor image and elevated the stature of the harp right up there with the fiddles and pipes in the realm of dynamic dance music. Add to that the unsurpassed expressive quality the harp has in her hands in the rendition of age-old airs and laments and you have the masterful performance of an experienced and renowned player.A lifelong County Mayo resident, Gráinne has not rested on the laurels of winning the senior All-Ireland titles on harp and concertina in 1994 and then the prestigious Keadue and Granard harp competitions. Her three critically acclaimed solo CDs, The Thorn Tree (2006), Between the Showers (1999) and Golden Lights Green Shadows, (2003) are "must haves" for every Irish harp player and fan. She has also recorded with numerous other artists. She has also published two books of her arrangements. She tours most of the year and has appeared at most of the major harp and Irish music festivals in the U.S. and Europe. She and William Jackson teamed up and began touring as "The Masters of the Celtic Harp" in 2005 and have been traveling together ever since. They live now outside of Claremorris in County Mayo.Be sure to check out Gráinne and Billy's free online concert on May 23rd at 3:00pm EDT. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/grainne-hambly-and-william-jackson-live-online-registration-103535543598And check out Grainne's Websitehttp://grainnehambly.com/And FB pagehttps://www.facebook.com/hamblyjacksonmusic/Notes for Grainne's Podcasthttp://www.somersetharpfest.com/escape.htmlMay 23rd 2020 Free online concert with Billy Jacksonhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/grainne-hambly-and-william-jackson-live-online-registration-103535543598Grainne's Websitehttp://grainnehambly.com/On FBhttps://www.facebook.com/hamblyjacksonmusic/Harp Agency: Grainne and Billy Jacksonhttp://harpagency.com/artist1.htmHarp Column: Grainne's sheetmusichttps://harpcolumn.com/music/all-music/categories/artists/grainne-hambly/Planxty SweenyOn guitar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd0awzUshG0On harp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IeolSC7QeUThe Thistle and Shamrock show on NPR: Harpershttps://www.npr.org/2013/12/11/250235583/the-thistle-and-shamrock-harpersTunes MentionedPlanxty SweeneySoft Mild MorningBright New MorningThe Taylor's TwistQueen's University Belfasthttps://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/ael/Study/Arts/Undergraduate/Music/http://www.somersetharpfest.com/Turlough O'Carolan Harp Festival Nobber, Irelandhttps://www.nobberharpfestival.com/Bunting Manuscripts at Queen's University Belfasthttp://digital-library.qub.ac.uk/digital/collection/p15979coll9The Irish Song Projecthttp://irishsongproject.qub.ac.uk/Harp Tour of Irelandhttp://www.harpersescape.com/harptour.htmlThe Belfast Harp Festival of 1792http://www.androichead.com/whats-on/2017/8/3/edward-bunting-the-belfast-harp-festival-of-1792Society for Ethnomusicologyhttps://www.ethnomusicology.org/default.aspxA History of The Trinity College Harphttps://gifts.tcd.ie/the-trinity-college-harp-a-history-by-brian-mannersCarolin Marathon at The Somerset Folk Harp Festivalhttp://www.somersetharpfest.com/greatstuff.html#jamCarolin Marathon “Starter Kit”http://www.somersetharpfest.com/carolan-marathon-list.pdfHarpist Janet Harbisonhttps://www.janetharbisonharp.com/Harpist Kim Robertsonhttp://www.kimrobertson.net/Belfast Harp Orchestrahttps://www.janetharbisonharp.com/janet-harbison/harp-orchestras/belfast-harp-orchestraJanet Harbison and Grainne Hambly performing, “Bright New Morning” at The Somerset Folk Harp Festival 2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSc7qcqg1KA

First off, thanks to Mickey O'Donnell and Michelle Doyle for doing their interview with approximately two hours advance notice. They don't hang about, those two. Please go here to support their osteoporosis awareness campaign: https://www.mickeymichelle.com/bone-health.html And so. The Harp. When I was at Uni my mates used to laugh at the fact that my passport had 'the Guinness symbol' on the front cover. I'd never really given it much thought up until then, the fact that the passport and the extra stout shared the same symbol. What was the actual mechanism by which the image of a harp ended up on the Irish passport, I wonder? Who decided? There must have been a committee. And given the tendency for committees to be agonizing and infuriating, and given the tendency for Irish republicans to disagree amongst themselves from time to time, I'm sure the decision wasn't arrived at easily. Come to think of it, humans in general have a great talent for separating themselves into different sects over pointless passions. I mean, I worked in a place once where there was a long running and spectacularly ill-tempered series of arguments about whether there should be an electric kettle in the new tearoom that people could switch on 'as and when' they need to make a cup of tea, or one of those giant shiny urns that keeps the water at a constant temperature of 3000 degrees so you can scald yourself instantly without having to wait for a minute and a half. So it'd be no surprise if deciding on the harp was a cause of angst in the early days of the Republic. I looked it up in these antique things I have in my house called reference books, like an intellectual might do. But there was nothing there so I googled it and found this piece from The Irish Post, written by Mary Louise O'Donnell: https://www.irishpost.com/life-style/history-irish-harp-symbol-ireland-57038 Giraldus Cambrensis how are ye! And then there's Turlough O'Carolan. He was blind, a traveling harper and composed a whole rake (I just realized I don't know how to spell that word right) of tunes that are really quite strange to my ear. They have a European feel to them in places, quite elaborately ornamented, and as I think about it now there were two of his tunes I learned to play early on: Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór (The Little Fairy Hill and The Big Fairy Hill) and Fanny Power (emphasis on the second word.) I mentioned Alan Stivell's 'Renaissance of the Celtic Harp' in our chat with Michelle and Mickey. It's one of those records that has the power to pull me back, in what feels like an almost physical experience, back to my youth. (I know, I know, I say that every week, but it's true, that really does happen to me every week, more than one time...it's a wonder I can get out of my scratcher at all some days...) Anyway, the image I have of that album is of a cover with some sort of seascape on the front, kind of ghostly and weirdly Celtic-y, even though at that time I had no idea what that was even about, and still don't really. There were only five tracks on it and one of them took up the whole of Side 2 and had pretty much every 'trad' instrument I'd ever heard of crammed into it, and several I hadn't. And there was another track called 'Ys' that had sea sounds and whistles and a sort of ambient feel to it. It was weird, man. I was introduced to that record by a radical priest who had arrived in our town. When I say radical, I mean he had long hair and a beard and a dog, and talked like a normal human being. And he told me there was this cool thing called General Absolution that meant you didn't have to actually go to confession, you could just have forgiveness bestowed upon you, kind of like having the holy water scattered on you at Easter but without you actually having to show up. He was great. He lent me Van Morrison's 'It's Too Late To Stop Now' (which I still have), 'Meddle' by Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen's 'Songs From a Room' and loads of other music that was a lot more interesting to me at the time than the Celtic harp. And yet, true story, diving once again through the boundless depths of Spotify one day looking for stuff to send to Darren, what did I find but that very album. And when I listened to the first few seconds of 'Ys,' with the waves and the opening notes and the harmonics, I was, like I say, pulled back towards my youth. That album was released in 1971 and even today it sounds pretty out there. Even when you're not stoned out of your gourd. You should give it a listen sometime. On the way back from the interview with Mickey and Michelle, Darren and me were wondering how people so young have such confidence. Then we realized it's probably at least in part because they're ridiculously talented, and that's kind of lovely to witness. And truth be told, I think we were both a tiny wee bit jealous at the excitement and enthusiasm and joy they have for what's ahead of them - the music and the work and the travel. As a couple of cynics, we found it pretty inspiring. Michelle, Mickey, thanks for the chat, and for the chance to listen to you play. I hope to catch you at a forthcoming Ren Faire. I'm a college professor and screenwriter and have recently completed a feature female-driven adventure screenplay that incorporates aspects of Scottish folklore. It's called The Storm King and is about Skye Blackwood, the 18-year-old reluctant successor to a remote village’s leader. She's forced to take up the mantle when the adults of her community, including her older brother, abruptly vanish, pushing her to set out with a ramshackle team to find them and become the leader she never wanted to be. The script recently made the top 10% of the Academy Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowships, which is a top screenwriting competition. I'm excited! I listened to a good number of your podcasts while writing it and the music was inspiring. I realize this is a total shot in the dark, but if you know of any managers, producers, or reps who'd be interested in reading such a thing, I'd be very grateful for the referral (and I'd absolutely become a patron). Either way, keep up the great work and I look forward to more excellent, inspiring music." Thanks Jared. I'll be honest. Networking is not my strong suit. That's one of the reasons I podcast. It's easier than trying to go out and meet people. Yes, believe it or not, but I am a major introvert. That said, if anyone out there knows managers, producers or reps, contact Jared. Or me. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Robert Eby emailed: "Thanks for your great work on the podcast, Marc! I love how much diversity of Celtic music you put into it. I especially love Celtic rock and you have a special hour just on that with bands I’m mostly unfamiliar with! Ed Miller used to host a Celtic segment on Austin’s NPR station, but he NEVER played anything with bagpipes. I have a theory that Ed Miller doesn’t like the bagpipes. But you, Marc, you aren’t afraid of anything!" You're very welcome Robert. That's one of the many things I love about this podcast. The diversity. That is what truly makes America great. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. If you're like Ed Miller or just like Ed Miller's music, he has a radio program called Across the Pond. It comes out on Sundays from 6-8 PM on Sunradio in Austin. And I *think* you can listen to it online. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast exists on the generosity of our Patrons of the Podcast. Quantum Mindfulness Radio

Special Guest: Celebrated Harpist Peter Sterling’s life is a reminder to all who offer themselves as an open vessel for the Divine, that there’s no stop button once Spirit unleashes its creativity. Peter’s response to his heavenly calling 25 years ago, blossomed into an endlessly-creative multi-media career, spanning 16 studio albums, numerous Music Awards, a book called Hearing the Angels Sing, and an impressive series of crystal- frosted Mandala art prints enough to fill a gallery. Peter also creates sacred geometry Stained Glass art, and presents dynamic workshops on the science of sound healing & sacred geometry.Success came quickly for Peter, when the music label “World Disc” released his first album Harp Magic which was nominated in 1994 for NAIRD’s (now A2IM) Best String Album Award. In 2004 Sterling’s album Hap Dreams sat at the top of New Age Radio’s Top 100 for 8 weeks and garnered a Album of the Year nomination. In 2005 peter signed on with renowned new age music label Real Music to release his Shadow,Mist and Light cd. Peter’s self released 2008 effort The Sands of Time earned a nomination for a Hollywood Music Award for Best New Age Album. His 2012 release Patterns of Reflection soared to #1 on the ZMR 100 International Radio chart, also grabbing a nomination for Album of the Year. The very next year his album Twilight Serenade ascended to the #1 position on the ZMR Chart, while the track entitled “Isle of Light” recently earned a Bronze medal in the Global Music Awards for 2016.With thousands of worldwide fans, Internet-radio airplay streaming constantly around the globe, and a Vibrational Healing series of albums, Peter says his 16th studio album Sacred Visions is a different kind of benchmark: it encapsulates his life experience in the legendary red rock paradise of Sedona,Az. The album also celebrates the coming together of familiar talents on this rhythmic contemporary gem, bursting with danceable world beats and infectious multi-cultural grooves. Blending the accompaniment of studio whizzes Bruce Becvar, Robin Miller, and Fitzhugh Jenkins, along with popular New Age / Smooth Jazz artists Hans Christian, William Aura, and Third Force, it is every bit healing and reflective (as Peter’s fans have come to expect), as it is pure joy. Sacred Visions will likely make your body irresistibly move and groove! While some musicians are classically trained from childhood, others are guided to their destiny later in life. It took 33 years of living before Peter heard the still small voice while working in the high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains as a ski instructor in Aspen. Soon Peter couldn’t shake the notion that he was meant to devote his life to art and become a creative channel for Divine inspiration. Sedona beckoned, and Peter heeded the call without hesitation.Exploring Sedona’s remote canyons daily, and living out of his trusty van, Peter followed every Divine hunch and inspiration as a free-spirited seeker. The Celtic Harp serendipitously entered his life on a fateful day in Sedona as an answer to a prayer on how best to fulfill his unique life purpose. Now toting his harp with him everywhere he went, Peter surrendered himself completely, allowing Grace to unfold through him amidst Sedona’s epic scenery and energy vortices. Having only a few lessons under his belt from the seller of the Celtic Harp, the Angels took over, guiding Peter’s hands and causing them to move masterfully within a few short months. No one was more surprised than Peter, whose skill-level demonstrated that of a virtuoso rather than a mere beginner.Peter felt inspired to make drastic changes to his diet and lifestyle, switching to vegetarian “living” foods and immersing himself in healing treatments to upgrade his physical and energetic bodies through shamanic, chiropractic, energy healing and herbal treatments. With his newfound inner attunement, the Angels continued to reach Peter’s inner ear with heavenly sound transmissions, a sound which many mystics have called “the Music of the Spheres.”Little did Peter know that one day his angelic music would garner testimonials from around the world for its miraculous healing effects: softening the hearts of the dying at the moment of their transition and used by mothers at the time of birth and to ease their autistic children’s suffering. For many, it has become the quintessential healing soundtrack for meditation and massage. “My mission is to create music that can create an experience of transcendence in the listener; strike a chord on their heartstrings, and remind them of Home – a feeling of Oneness,” Peter commented.A favorite on Internet radio such as Pandora, Sirius, XM Satellite, and Soundscapes Radio as well as United and American airlines, Peter scarcely dreamed that his music would have a massive worldwide audience back when he was recording his first 8 tracks on a cassette tape in Byron Bay, Australia and marketing it on foot around Sedona with its hand-drawn cover art. Now, through Internet Radio, CD, DVD, his website, and countless other forums, Peter’s angelic music will continue to reach the masses, heal lives, balance brains, open hearts, and connect people to their innate spiritual essence.A walk into his beautiful West-Sedona home will find dozens of his canvas and wood-mounted “Portals of Light” Mandala art prints, glossed and shimmering with finely-ground Quartz crystal specks. Peter’s stained glass pieces adorn much of the house as well, which are the inspiration used to create the Mandala design for the “Portals of Light” series. When not in the studio working on his next album, Peter is often found working in his organic vegetable and herb garden, ensuring fresh, high-energy food for his family, which now consists of his partner Crystal, and their 5-year old son Micah. Peter also enjoys guiding out-of-towners on Sacred Land Journeys to Sedona’s spectacular vortex sites that have captured his heart and inspired his art and music.Hosted by: Joel Ayala AyapanaProduced by: Joel Ayala Ayapana Disclaimer by: Tiffany Renee Ayapana Introduction by: Rahman Ali Podcast Radio Network: Real Revolution Radio 2.0Network Link: http://www.realrevolutionradio.comArchives: http://www.realrevolutionradioarchives.comNOTICE: By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents and design of this Podcast, are the property of Quantum Mindfulness Radio LLC and REAL REVOLUTION RADIO X.0, or used by Quantum Mindfulness Radio LLC (QMR) and REAL REVOLUTION RADIO X.0 (RRRX) with permission, and are protected under U.S. and international copyright and trademark laws. (John 6:12) As the live recording did not come out, I rerecorded it this morning – which gave the opportunity to add an incredibly inspired piece of music that Jane Horsfall from Jersey wrote for Celtic Harp. Julia Herzog plays the recorder on this, as she also does on the second piece, which is by Vivaldi.

Second half of our summary of the Irish Mythological Cycle In this show, we finish off our summary of the Irish Mythological Cycle as we've met it so far in the first 29 story episodes. Not only is this show finishing off a whole branch of Celtic Mythology, but it also celebrates the Autumn Equinox for 2011, so we've made it a real cracker and split it into two halves. In the first half, you heard an epic poem, 4 great songs and we took a look at the Origins of the Manuscripts which these stories come from and highlight some of the the themes we've noticed in the stories. We conclude our examination of the Irish Mythological Cycle in this Second Part of this show by looking at the main characters in the stories, finishing the epic saga of Greenwood the Bard's epic poem, and yes, another 5 great pieces of music! We also introduce you to the newest member of the team, play another Pentacle Drummers track to let you know that the deadline for competition entries is the 20th Novembers Full Show-notes, with all credits, can be found on our main Website at http://celticmythpodshow.com/irishsummary2 Running Order: Intro 0:44 News & Views 1:08 The Old Man & the Fairy Queen by The Bards of Mystic 2:07 The Book of Invasions Pt.3 by Greenwood the Bard 13:26 Elven Home of the Chapel Halls by David Helfand 23:10 Main Characters in the Myth Cycle 28:16 I'll Meet You in Ireland by Kray Van Kirk 39:18 The Book of Invasions Pt.4 by Greenwood the Bard 43:07 Rumblin' Thunder by The Pentacle Drummers 56:22 Competition End-date 58:02 Land of the Ever-Young by Damh the Bard 59:17 We hope you enjoy it! More details will also be found on our Contributor page.   The Book of Invasions, Pts. 3 & 4 by Greenwood the Bard Greenwood the Bard, aka Stephen Cole, has written much wonderful poetry and we're very privileged to bring you his "Book of Invasions" epic saga that re-tells the story of the Invasions of Erin. "After a lifelong love of myth and magic, fairytale and folklore, and brought up in a family where faith and a Godly lifestyle were more important than religion, I was named as a Bard at a Gorsedd in Glastonbury. I am deeply in love with my Creator and His Creation, I have a passion for music, poetry and storytelling, and I live to build bridges between Christian and Pagan." That is such a wonderful quest and so sad that any bridges need to be built. Good luck, Stephen! Check out his Facebook page for more of his wonderful poetry, the poetry pages on paganspace.net and mysticchrist.co.uk where we're waiting for his posts to start appearing.   Elven Home of the Chapel Halls by David Helfand David Helfand composes and performs original and traditional music on Celtic Harp, mandocello, guitar, keyboards and percussion. Many of David's compositions were born through improvisation and drawn on the inspiration found in the power of music from many wondrous cultures. "As I returned from my maiden voyage from the land of Britain full of awe, unspeakable joy and deep reservoirs of inspiration, slowly the music started to speak. From the high craggy cliffs where the ruins of Tintagel castle lay overlooking the dark waters off Cornwall's shore, to the ancient majestic ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and the dark mysteries of the Tower of London, the swirling maze of the city's streets and the magic of the standing stones on Salisbury Plain, I swam deep in the waters of imagination. "Shortly after returning home and embarking on creating "At the Edge of the Cornish Sea", I soon shared with the world, dark grief and immense sadness as the two towers crumbled to the earth creating it's deep grave of shattered lives and dreams. What once seemed important became insignificant against the dark clouds of sorrow." This wonderful track comes from his At the Edge of the Cornish Sea album. You can find out more details about David on his website or on his Contributor Page on our website.   I'll Meet You in Ireland by Kray Van Kirk "I have a different approach now to writing and performing music. I no longer record CDs, as I want to reduce the waste headed to our landfills, and I don't charge money for my songs as a deliberate movement away from the bottom line that seems to govern so much of our daily lives. Every now and then someone asks me how I am ever supposed to make a living as a musician when I don't make CDs and I give my songs away, since most performers make more money on sales than concert fees. I confess: I have no idea! Footsteps in the dark. "So I keep writing my songs, and I sing them when I play a show, and I give them away to anyone who wants them. My graduate work takes me to interesting places on rather short notice sometimes, and I try to plan concerts around that travel, although the short notice can make it difficult. But if I don't make it to where you live, or even if I do, the Downloads page on my website is full of little digital penguins waiting to march their way across the world, leaving no footprints in the snow." About this track, I'll Meet You in Ireland, he says: "One of my favorite poems is Yeats' Song of Wandering Aengus. All of us get old, but inside there is a place that never changes. We may wake up in bodies long gone frail, but the person who looks out is golden-eyed, barefoot in the grass, heady with the light and smells of a Spring that is endless, and generally wondering what the hell happened." Find our more about Kray on his website or check out his Contributor Page to find out a little more about him.   Competition (Chatterbox Show) We then talk about the Competition about the Pentacle Drummers we set in the Chatterbox Show SP24 and set an ending date of the 20th October 2011 for competition entries.   Rumblin' Thunder by the Pentacle Drummers "The Pentacle Drummers from Eastbourne, East Sussex were a small group founded in 2001 to perform at the Lammas Festival to accompany the Eastbourne Giants, 'Herne the Hunter' and 'Andred', Saxon Goddess of the Weald. We have since grown from a small group to a troupe in excess of twenty.  The Pentacle Drummers actively support Eastbourne Bonfire Society at bonfires throughout Sussex but are happy to appear on our own or in support of other Bonfire Societies when invited!" You can hear the thundering track Rumblin' Thunder, which is from their album Life in Tatters! Swami Nirmalananda was a saint in India, and one of the gurus of our founding teachers Sharon and David. Nirmalananda lived in the hills of southern India and practiced social activism. He maintained silence for 11 years, in those years was an avid letter writer. He wrote to all manner of politician, activist, celebrity, artists. In this simple way, we can all become socially engaged. Sharon Gannon encourages us to write one letter a week. It is especially important to write letters praising the positive changes you see in the world, since most of the letters usually come from people who are coming from the negative point of view. Mia Theodoratus joins us on her gorgeous harp!

This classic study by a distinguished scholar, first published in 1911, builds not only upon the valuable hints supplied by the surviving texts but also upon the still-extant folk customs derived from the rituals of the old cults. A masterly and extremely readable survey, it offers a reconstruction of the essentials of Celtic paganism. The Celt is portrayed as a seeker after God who links himself by strong ties to the unseen, eagerly attempting to conquer the unknown by religious rite and magic art. The earliest aspect of Celtic religion lies in the culture of nature spirits and of life manifested in nature, and this book offers fascinating glimpses into primitive forms of worship, depicting Celtic rites centred on rivers and wells, trees and plants, and animals. The Druids maintained an optimistic view of the afterlife, and the author presents the subject from the comparative point of view, drawing upon evidence from Celtic burial mounds to elaborate upon ancient beliefs and customs related to the culture of the dead, including rites of rebirth and transmigration. Unabridged republication of the edition published by Constable and Company Limited, 1911. Project Gutenberg With gratitude for music provided by Anne Roos   Middleton Moor by Kiss the Mistress Kiss The Mistress was formed 18 months ago and in that time has moved from folk club floor spots to main act bookings. Their debut CD About Time, released on the 20th March 2009 is already receiving rave reviews and their CD launch at the famous Cambridge Folk Club a fantastic night, attended and enjoyed greatly by an appreciative audience who had traveled from across the Eastern region to attend. You can find out more details about Kiss The Mistress on their website or on their Contributor Page on our website.   Autumn by Francis Ledwidge Francis Ledwidge, the Irish nationalist and poet, was born in Slane on 19 August 1887 the son of a poor labourer. Leaving school at the age of 14 he worked in various manual labour positions while developing a love for and honing his own poetical talents. It was in 1911 that Ledwidge first received notable recognition for his poetry. Having sent a collection of his poems to well-known author Lord Dunsany he received a favourable response, Dunsany assuming the role of mentor to Ledwidge, introducing him to the Dublin literary scene. Although possessing moderate Irish nationalist views Ledwidge nevertheless signed up with the British Army - the Irish Volunteers in October 1914 - to serve in France and Flanders during World War One, on the basis that it was unreasonable to expect others to fight for the freedoms that he would later enjoy. Despite his initial reluctance to enlist he nevertheless argued that his service with the British during World War One was in no way incompatible with his nationalist views: rather, he believed he was furthering the cause of Irish independence from Britain. Several of his previous band’s most memorable performance experiences, in which the audience connection could only be described as magical, took place in Dublin. He will return to Dublin for his first solo acoustic performance (as Saint Narcissus) at Eamonn Doran’s on August 14, 2009. In the intervening years, Keith has re-discovered his Celtic roots in Ireland as well as his new-found spiritual roots in their ancient Christian practices. Through immersion in research of many things Celtic, his writing continues to be heavily informed, inspired, and influenced by the world of Celtic myth and reality. You can find out more details about Keith on his Contributor Page on our website.   Autumn by Linda (Mum) Ballew Ruthie's Mum sent us a beautifully sung version of Francis Ledwidge's poem Autumn in a superb coincidence for the season.
