Across the Green Sea: Histories from the Western Indian Ocean, 1440-1640 (University of Texas Press, 2024) by Dr. Sanjay Subrahmanyam presents a history of two centuries of interactions among the areas bordering the western Indian Ocean, including India, Iran, and Africa. Beginning in the mid-fifteenth century, the regions bordering the western Indian Ocean—“the green sea,” as it was known to Arabic speakers—had increasing contact through commerce, including a slave trade, and underwent cultural exchange and transformation. Using a variety of texts and documents in multiple Asian and European languages, Across the Green Sea looks at the history of the ocean from a variety of shifting viewpoints: western India; the Red Sea and Mecca; the Persian Gulf; East Africa; and Kerala. Dr. Subrahmanyam sets the scene for this region starting with the withdrawal of China's Ming Dynasty and explores how the western Indian Ocean was transformed by the growth and increasing prominence of the Ottoman Empire and the continued spread of Islam into East Africa. He examines how several cities, including Mecca and the vital Indian port of Surat, grew and changed during these centuries, when various powers interacted until famines and other disturbances upended the region in the seventeenth century. Rather than proposing an artificial model of a dominant center and its dominated peripheries, Across the Green Sea demonstrates the complexity of a truly dynamic and polycentric system through the use of connected histories, a method pioneered by Dr. Subrahmanyam himself. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael

On this edition of Parallax Views, a new movie called The Green Sea tells a story that combines straightforward drama with the magical realism reminiscent of authors like Haruki Murakami (Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood) and elements of the kind of ghost stories bringing to mind M.R. James. Its writer and director has an interesting lineage, to say the least. Oliver Plunkett is the 21st Baron of Dunsany, one of the oldest continuously lived in estates in all of Ireland. He's the ancestor of the fantasy writer Lord Dunsany (aka Edward Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany), who influenced such authors as Cthulhu mythos creator H.P. Lovecraft and The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. He's a noted fan of black metal and death metal, has directed numerous zombie and horror films, and environmentalist. In terms of the latter he has gained both praise and scorn for his notorious decision to rewild the Dunsany estate, turning it into the Dunsany Nature Preserve. With the recently released The Green Sea, Plunkett made his feature film debut as a director. And, as it turns out, the film has many deeply personal and even autobiographic elements in it that shed light on Plunkett's views on creativity, isolation, alienation, the mysteries of life, the importance of social relationships, finding solace in nature, regret and redemption, self-expression, and the power of the imagination. From the IMDB Plot summary for The Green Sea: Simone (Katharine Isabelle), an American writer living a solitary life in Irish countryside, is haunted by visions of her past which begin to intertwine with the fantasy world of the novel she is writing, blurring the lines between reality and the fantasy. Her life changes, when the protagonist of her book, known only as "Kid", played by up and coming Irish actress Hazel Doupe (Float Like A Butterfly), appears to her as a victim of a drunk driving incident that forces the pair together. This sets up the beginning of an unlikely relationship, ultimately setting off a chain of events that will force Simone to face her sinister past. Randal Plunkett joins us on this edition of Parallax Views to discuss this exciting new film that can only be described as a mysterious hybrid of genres. In addition, our conversation allows us to delve into the history of the Dunsany family estate, the musical genius of musicians Scott Conner of the infamous black metal and "doomgrass" one-man-bands Xasthur and Nocturnal Poisoning as well as Justin K. Broadrick of the industrial metal act Godflesh and the post-metal pioneers Jesu, the brilliance of The Green Sea's lead actress Katharine Isabelle (know for her title role in the innovative werewolf movie franchise Ginger Snaps as well as appearances in Freddy vs. Jason, American Mary, and hit TV shows like Hannibal and The Order among others), the rewilding of the Dunsany estate and the backlash it has caused against Randal, the difficulties of making an independent film that blends different genres, and The Green Sea's themes of alienation, the powers of the imagination, alienation, the mysteries inherent to life and consciousness, and how it all relates to Randal's own philosophy and experiences. All that and much more on this jam-packed nearly two hour long edition of Parallax Views.

Welcome to Bringing Design Closer, the podcast focussed on discussing Designs role in tackling  complex societal issues. Our goal is to have conversations that inspire and to help move the dial forward for organisations to become more human-centred in their approach to solving complex business and societal problems. In this episode we welcome Randal Plunkett who is also Lord Dunsany of Dunsany land in Meath, an area 50 miles north west of Dublin City in Ireland. Randal's family are deeply entrenched in my upbringing - as a great great great great great great uncle of Randals was Oliver Plunkett, who was brutally murdered by Oliver Cromwell in 1681 and who's head is still on display in the town where I grew up, Drogheda. Randal is one of the last blood lines of Oliver Plunkett - so it's been fantastic to connect and hear stories about his up bringing. I recently spotted an interview with Randal in The Guardian newspaper in the UK where he was interviewed about one of the largest Rewilding projects that I had heard of - which is part of his 1700 acre estate.  In the conversation we speak about what led Randal to take the leap into Rewilding, how it was perceived amongst his family and community and mostly importantly, what happened to the land as the years went by.  We speak about the darker side of life as a Lord, who is responsible for not only maintaining an estate - but protecting it for future generations both from environmental damage and decay but also from human damage of the land and hunters who come to prey on the animals who have returned to the Dunsany Estate and Reserve. It's a good one - let's jump in... Kenneth & Blaire Mossman Professor of Microbiology, Steven W. Wilhelm, joins the show to talk about cyanobacteria, the problems presented by blue-green algae blooms, and the research he's conducting in the lab. In this episode, you'll learn: What the difference is between a blue-green algal bloom and a “dead zone” Why the switch from ammonium nitrate to urea as fertilizer about 25 years ago coincided with blue-green algal bloom issues In what ways toxic algal blooms are detrimental to humans and other species Cyanobacteria is responsible for carrying out more than 25% of the photosynthesis on the planet, which means that about one out of every four breaths of oxygen you take is thanks to these single-celled bacteria that can be found in abundance in every aquatic system in the world. But what happens when there's too much growth of cyanobacteria, and what causes overgrowth?   Wilhelm explains that concerning algal blooms are driven primarily by human activity—specifically those activities which result in high levels of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus being pumped into the environment and contributing to rapid population increases in cyanobacteria. When this happens, the algal blooms that form fundamentally change the water systems they are in by pushing out algae that may be better fish food, and producing toxins called microcystin and other compounds which can be harmful to other species, including humans. When these blooms die, they become food for heterotrophic bacteria that consume oxygen. As a result of this, “dead zones” form, which have significant impacts on fish habitat and other forms of aquatic life.    So, what can be done about this problem? Wilhelm and the team at his lab spend a lot of time sequencing RNA and DNA in order to investigate why different organisms emerge under different circumstances. The hope is that with a better understanding of why cyanotoxins do so well under certain conditions (as opposed to more beneficial algae), it will be possible to intervene with a treatment or other method and prevent or limit further growth.  Tune in for all the details and visit http://wilhelmlab.utk.edu/ to learn more. Green Sea Guard. Even the name of this company paints a colorful picture of a powerful team of guardians poised and ready to save the Earth. Protectors of the ocean. Defenders of the water. This eco-focused company is in active forward motion to keep harmful emissions out of our water system. These are true ocean heroes. This week, Anita Bradshaw, the woman behind the operations of the Green Sea Guard, joined us for another episode of the ecofemmag podcast. Though it took 28 years for Anita to find her way into the renewable energy scene, she’s doing remarkable work with Green Sea Guard. When most of us talk about ‘emissions’, we’re usually referring to cars, planes, and factories, but we often forget the huge carbon dioxide contribution made by ships and other watercraft. Green Sea Guard provides (and installs) equipment to evaluate the emissions released by watercraft in order to improve the overall efficiency of the fleets, but also to bring awareness to the extremely high amounts of carbon emissions this industry produces. The Green Sea Guard is a team of both paid and volunteer employees, and the majority of them have been involved from day one, around four and a half years ago. These humans are changing the world for the better, and I thank each and every one of them from the depth of my soul.“There are so many little things we can all do every day, and sometimes it's quite easy to think ‘Oh, this doesn't really matter,’ but it’s all about every single one of us going that extra mile. We can really make a difference.”Curious about how Green Sea Guard monitors ship emissions? Are you itching to learn more about Anita and how she found herself working with this sea-changing project? This episode is only 24 minutes long - so be sure to pencil us in sometime today or this weekend. Don’t have time? Listen while you wash those dishes, or on your evening walk. Turn podcast learning into a family activity, maybe swapping out that evening TV show for a podcast chat. This podcast episode is bound to provoke lots of stimulating round-the-table discussions.Want to follow the Green Sea Guard’s progress? Click here to read more about them on their website. They’re also active on Twitter and Facebook, but they spend more time actually installing and monitoring, rather than posting to social media, so be patient with their updates! MAJID NAFICY Majid Naficy was born in Isfahan, Iran, in 1952 and currently lives in West Los Angeles, California. Raised in a large and well- educated family, his first poems were published in a literary journal in Isfahan when he was just 13. After studying at the University of California at Los Angeles, Naficy returned to Tehran University, abandoned writing poetry, and joined political groups working to overthrow the Shah. After the 1979 Revolution, when Khomeini began to crack down on dissidents, Naficy and his wife, Ezzat Tabaiyan, were forced to go underground, but continued to work against the new regime. In 1981 both Ezzat and Naficy’s brother, Said, were imprisoned and executed and thereafter, in 1983, Naficy fled the country. With the help of Kurdish guerillas, Naficy escaped to Turkey on horseback, carrying the nine poems he had written after Ezzat’s death, some money, an Afghani passport, and torn photos of his brother and wife. Eighteen months later he was granted asylum in the U. S. and moved to Venice, California. Naficy’s poetry has been widely anthologized, and he has published more than twenty collections of poetry in Persian and two collections in English. He is a beloved poet among Iranian exiles in Los Angeles and elsewhere, and an inspiration to many. In his honour, a stanza of his poem ‘Ah, Los Angeles!’ is engraved on the wall of a city park in Venice. This podcast features Elizabeth T. Grey Jr, reading her translation of the poem, first published in MPT 'The Great Flight'. ELIZABETH T. GRAY, JR. is a poet, translator, and corporate consultant. SERIES | INDIA, a collection of original poems, was published by Four Way Books in 2015. Her translations from classical and contemporary Persian include The Green Sea of Heaven: Fifty Ghazals from the Diwan-i Ha z-i Shirazi (1995) and Iran: Poems of Dissent (2013).

o we all know that male seahorses get pregnant but new research from University of Sydney is telling us much more about what happens in that pouch on the dad... this is just one of the bits of news Bron and Anth will bring on Sunday...Just sit right back and you'll also hear a tale, a tale of a fruitful trip - this week, six Victorian teachers set sail on an expedition in Moreton Bay in Queensland, to assist scientists researching the health of the bay's fragile marine ecosystem. Their quest is part of Earthwatch's Sailing for Seagrass research project, and takes in studying the impact of Brisbane's coastal development on seagrass beds that are vital for the survival of dugongs, Green Sea turtles and other marine life in the bay, including commercial and recreational fisheries. We'll speak with Dr James Udy, Chief Scientist of Healthy Waterways, about the trip, the teachers who were chosen to take part, and what they'll do in taking the learnings from their experiences back into their classrooms. And finally a couple of weeks ago the marine and coastal gliterati headed to the Arts Centre to find out who won the Victorian Coastal Awards. We did mention it at the time and Sunday Anth brings his review and report from the night. As usual it is humbling to see what amazing community volunteers do along our shores!

Not from Nantle but from our own research.. The Court of Hefaydd Hen THE COURT OF HEFEYDD HEN (or Hyfaidd Hen) – unknown, but, according to the Mabinogion, certainly not in Dyfed. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Alt Clud - now called Dumbarton Rock Their capital was Allt Clud – a huge rock on the further north bank of the River Clyde. [Now called Dumbarton (City of the Britons) Rock NS399745]. For thousands of years they lived in peace. But a deadly menace now threatens their existence. A party of daring explorers, led by the wise magician Speckarin, is sent on trained ravens to destroy an evil lurking a continent and an ocean away.
