Send us a textThe journey from military service to civilian career success can be one of the most challenging transitions many veterans and military spouses face. In this enlightening conversation with Victoria Thompson from American Corporate Partners (ACP), we uncover a powerful resource that's transforming thousands of veterans' lives through personalized mentorship.Victoria shares her own compelling journey – from joining the Army at 17 and serving in Psychological Operations to navigating college as a veteran and building a career while supporting her military spouse lifestyle. Her firsthand experience with the "otherness" many veterans feel when reentering civilian life provides authentic context for the work she now does helping others bridge that gap.At the heart of this episode is the remarkable story of ACP, a nonprofit founded in 2008 that has grown from serving 300 veterans to maintaining approximately 5,000 mentorship pairs at any given time. The program pairs veterans and military spouses with corporate professionals who guide them through the complexities of career transition – from translating military skills on resumes to navigating salary negotiations and professional networking. What makes ACP unique? Unlike many resources, they focus on meaningful employment rather than just job placement. Their comprehensive human-driven approach (no AI here!) includes one-on-one mentorship lasting a full year with regular check-ins and personalized support. Perhaps most impressive is their track record: proteges who find jobs during mentorship average starting salaries exceeding $90,000, and remarkably, only about 45% have four-year degrees. The conversation explores how networking has become increasingly critical in today's job market, where AI screening systems often filter out qualified candidates. Victoria shares practical insights about how veterans can overcome common transition challenges, from imposter syndrome to difficulty articulating military experience in civilian terms.Ready to transform your own transition or support a veteran in your life? Discover how ACP's free mentorship program is building bridges to meaningful careers and restoring hope for the military community. Visit acp-usa.org to learn more or volunteer as a mentor yourself.

We catch up to discuss the difference between badge collecting and building edtech certifications. A lot of us educators become ambassadors for companies but she unpacks the ways we can align what we do and strategically plan out our career with true edtech certifications. This is not to say that badge collecting is a bad thing. Being an ambassador for an edtech company means true understanding and application of that particular product which empowers teachers in many ways. She comes at it from a different angle and aligns skills with career planning and community building. You NEED to give this episode a listen and connect with Victoria. Buen provecho! I took the audio recorder along on the OMM Elite course in Glen Artney over the weekend of 26&27th October 2024.I was paired with Phil Rutter of Kendal who has won the Elite race in 2022 and 2023. The OMM is a 2 day mountain marathon in which teams of two navigate between checkpoints to a midway camp, carrying all the food and kit they require to survive in the October weather. A very popular event, it has different courses to fit different abilities, and is held in a different area each year. Phil talks us through the OMM and we have some chat as we progress through day 1. Arriving at the midway camp in second place, we talk to Martin Stone of SPORTident timing. Martin features in my Bob Graham Round episode (Episode 16), and has his own episode about his Midwinter Solo Unsupported Bob Graham Round in 1987 (Episode 10). We then debrief with the race leaders, Felix Wilson and Dan Ashwood before settling down for an early night in our tiny tent. Setting out on day 2 we had a seeded start 3 mins behind the leaders, but with only 70 seconds of time to make up on them. Catching them, we then had a long fight on our hands as each team would try and outpace and outsmart the other. This included taking very different lines between checkpoints 4&5, only to come together again at checkpoint 5 with seconds between us. Racing hard, we all navigated to the wrong stream bend for checkpoint 7. Felix and Dan relocated quicker and were off. It looked like we had lost the fight for first place. But we managed to claw back level with the guys - who then put on a sprint finish in the final field. Over two days and 11.5hrs of racing we won by only 90 seconds - apparently the closest winning margin in the OMM for years. For me, the OMM stands for traditional UK hill running values: held on rough terrain, in often difficult weather, with proper navigation, route choice and a requirement for mountain self sufficiency. With around 1300 competitors this year, it's a much loved event. The OMM is also the subject of Episode 28 with Victoria Thompson and Janie Oates, who were the female Elite course winners (and only elite course female finishers) in 2022. 2024 saw three female teams complete the Elite course (and many, many more over the other courses).
In today's episode, we dive into the transformative potential of AI in promoting equity in education with Victoria Thompson, one of ISTE's 2023 "Top 20 to Watch" and author of the book Elevate Equity in EdTech. While many educators are understandably concerned about AI's potential biases, Victoria shares her perspective on how AI tools like speech-to-text, translators, and others are leveling the playing field in classrooms in remarkable ways. Victoria works to give you some actionable insights on introducing AI, how we're already using it, and ways we can understand how AI can be used positively. She also encourages us to look at AI startups and certifications with a critical eye and shares what she looks for in a certification program. Victoria Thompson spent years hustling in the squeegee business, which has been one of the most polarizing topics that we've faced in Baltimore in a long time. Her recent leadership in the Squeegee Collaborative, where a group of Baltimore leaders and squeegee workers came together to listen to each other and map out a path forward that would be in the best interest of all those involved, has changed the landscape in our city, and is a beautiful reminder of the importance of listening deeply.

In October 2022 Victoria Thompson and Janie Oates came First in the Female category of the Elite OMM, and were the only female team to finish in this category since 2016. The OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) is a 2 day test of navigation and mountain craft held in late October each year, typically in harsh weather conditions. It was first held in 1968 and occurs in a different geographic area each year, with competitors having to carry all food and equipment such as tent and stove, navigating through a series of checkpoints to a midway camp, then doing it all again on Day 2 after a suboptimal sleep. There are various distance courses (Elite, A, B), as well as Score courses (3 distances - these courses are about choosing checkpoints to collect in a given time). We talk about what made them want to take on this challenge, the preparation and the wet event weekend itself, as well as getting into some of the potential barriers to women in this type of event, and hill running in general. This chat was inspired by an interview of Janie and Victoria at Kendal Mountain Festival 2022 by Becky Vale.

I have been so looking forward to bringing this episode to you! For a few years in the mid-2000’s, Dane Cook was on top of the world. He performed high-energy stand up routines to countless adoring fans. He sold out Madison Square Garden. One of his stand up comedy albums went platinum. The next one went double platinum. He got movie deals. He created his own production company. At the risk of stating the obvious, Dane got rich. Super rich. Luckily, his half-brother Darryl McCauley was by his side the whole time, acting as Dane’s business manager. Then Brandi tells us a story that’ll make your blood boil. In November of 2001, Kent Heitholt, a sports editor for the Columbia Daily Tribune, was discovered dead in the newspaper’s parking lot. Kent had been brutally beaten and strangled. His murder went unsolved for two years. But a young man named Charles Erickson, who’d been 17 at the time of Kent’s murder, read about the crime and got a bad feeling. He and his friend Ryan Ferguson had been partying at a nearby bar on the night of Kent’s murder. Charles had done cocaine, taken adderall, and been drinking that night. He couldn’t remember the night in question, but he began having troubling dreams. Those dreams made him wonder whether he and Ryan had been involved in Kent’s death. Charles eventually confessed to the crime. Police accepted the story, despite the fact that Charles’ dreams didn’t match the evidence. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: Dane Cook’s appearance on the podcast, “Your Mom’s House” Dane Cook’s appearance on the podcast, “Inside of You” Dane cook’s appearance on the podcast, “Bertcast” “Dane Cook’s half-brother, sister-in-law must repay $12 million,” by Alan Duke for CNN “Dane Cook’s manager-brother ordered to pay him $12 million,” by Lindsay Powers for The Hollywood Reporter “Wife of Dane Cook’s brother sentenced in embezzlement scheme,” by Lisa Redmond for the Lowell Sun In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Dream/Killer” Documentary “Ryan Ferguson’s Habeus Corpus Petition”http://courts.mo.gov “Saving Ryan Ferguson: One Lawyer’s Story” episode 48 Hours “The Ryan Ferguson Case: An examination of a strange murder and conviction” by Chris Hamby “Ryan Ferguson Freed After Spending Almost a Decade in Prison for Murder” by Lauren Effron and Victoria Thompson, ABC News “Ryan W. Cast Iron by Marilyn Todd pub date Oct 1, 2019 This was my first reading of a book written by Marilyn Todd. After reading Cast Iron, I would love to go back and read the first book in this series, entitled: Snap Shot. Both Snap Shot and Cast Iron take place in England, circa 1895. I can say, even though Cast Iron works just fine, as a stand-alone story, I will first provide a little information from the first book, Snap Shot. As a young widow in London, Julia McAllister supported herself by taking risqué photographs. Unfortunately, when her models began dying, Julia was being framed for their murders. And here’s some info from the publisher’s book summary describing this book series as : “A brilliant new Victorian mystery series you won’t want to miss!” “For fans of Sherlock Holmes, Anne Perry, Elizabeth Peters and Victoria Thompson.” “Julia turns from murder suspect to England’s first crime scene photographer…” As Cast Iron begins, we learn that Julia has apparently moved on from the problems she faced in Snap Shot, and is ready to move forward with her life. In fact, at this moment, she is ready to board a train out of town and into a new life! Ah! But, before you can say, “All Aboard,” Julia finds herself right smack in the middle of... "The Investigation" offers an early preview of Amy Robach's exclusive interview with Hunter Biden. Now, two of the producers who booked and produced the highly sought after interview, Victoria Thompson and Nadine Shubailat, sit down with "Investigation" co-host Chris Vlasto and discuss the critical points from the interview, including Hunter Biden's adamant response he did nothing improper when he joined Burisma's board, but saying "I'm a human...did I make a mistake? Well, maybe in the grand scheme of things, yeah." Then, our co-hosts break down the latest legal and political questions surrounding the impeachment inquiry with two ABC News contributors: former Congresswoman Barbara Comstock and former Obama White House lawyer and law professor Kate Shaw.

Welcome back to our podcast review podcasts where we, your Castologists, review podcasts. Got it? This week Zane gives us history with a comedic twist courtesy of The Dollop, Liz gets back into potential true crime (no conviction yet, folks!) with The Drop Out and Patrick gets philosophical and thinky with Ram Dass Here and Now.Liz Recommends - The Drop Outhttp://abcradio.com/podcasts/the-dropout/Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did the woman once heralded as “the next Steve Jobs” find herself facing criminal charges — to which she pleaded not guilty — and up to 20 years in jail? How did her technology, meant to revolutionize healthcare, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many smart people get it so wrong along the way? ABC News chief business, technology and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, along with producers Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thompson, take listeners on a journey that includes a three-year-long investigation. You’ll hear exclusive interviews with former employees, investors, and patients, and for the first-time, the never-before-aired deposition testimony of Elizabeth Holmes, and those at the center of this story. For both: Start from the start and listen to as many as you feel compelled to listen to.https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/the-dropout/id1449500734?mt=2Pat Recommends - Ram Dass Here and NowRichard Alpert was a Harvard professor and a clinical psychologist before he was Ram Dass. I found the most compelling version of his story is told with the first episodes of this podcast. He is a spiritual teacher and author, and these podcasts are a great way to digest his teachings, old and new. The format usually consists of an introduction from Raghu Markus (a friend and student of Ram Dass') followed by a lecture from years ago. Occasionally Ram Dass will be present for an interview. I've always found this podcast helpful for un-muddling my head, a nice little respite from my usual subscriptions. For Zane & Liz: I recommend you start with episode 1 and continue as long as you wish.https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/ram-dass-here-and-now/id518366323?mt=2Zane Recommends - The Dollopwww.dolloppodcast.comOn the Dollop podcast history buff and comedian Dave Anthony tells a new story each week to comedian Gareth Reynolds (who nominally knows nothing about the story). The Dollop is a super-popular podcast that has pioneered its two person format! Fans of both comedy and history are drawn to the wild stories and quick improv of the comedian hosts. The Dollop regularly tours in both the US and Australia and these live episodes usually feature local comedians and stories. For Pat: 300A - Donald Trump (Part One)For Liz: 188 - The Domino's Pizza Storyhttps://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/dollop-dave-anthony-gareth/id643055307?mt=2Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.

Elizabeth Holmes, once the darling of Silicon Valley, is under a different kind of spotlight. Elizabeth becomes a celebrity as Theranos breaks out of stealth mode and onto the main stage. The media can't get enough, and neither can many investors as Theranos Wellness Centers start popping up at Walgreens. To take advantage of the moment, Elizabeth spends millions on advertising, recruiting the same agency as Apple and even an Oscar-winning director. But real patients are now getting Theranos tests, and for some the results are shocking. In the second installment of "In Agatha's Footsteps" we feature an interview with best-seller author of the Gaslight Mystery Series, Victoria Thompson.
Host Patricia McLinn talks with bestselling author Victoria Thompson about her Gaslight Mystery series and the ups and downs of a career spent writing historical romance and mystery books. Victoria and Patricia discuss the craft of writing and teaching that craft to others. You can find Victoria on: *her website, *Facebook and *Twitter. Thanks to DialogMusik for the instrumentals that accompany this podcast.
Edgar nominated mystery author Victoria Thompson has written twenty (!) books in her Gaslight Mystery series set at the end of the 19th century in New York City. This is an author who knows her history! I was slightly intimidated to talk to Vicky, because I'm very new to the historical mystery genre. But she was a joy to chat with. You'll hear us discuss, among other thing, the parallels between the historical period we both write in and the present era we're all living in and experiencing today. If you're wanting to sink your teeth into a series that will provide you weeks of reading pleasure, you've come to the right podcast today. ;-) And even better news, Vicky has a new mystery series that recently launched with City of Lies. You can find out more about today's guest, Victoria Thompson, and all her books on her website VictoriaThompson.com. You can also find her on Twitter @gaslightvt. Transcription of Interview with Victoria Thompson Alexandra: Hello mystery readers. I'm Alexandra Amore. This is "It's a Mystery" podcast and I'm here today with Victoria Thompson. Hi, Victoria. Victoria: Good morning. How are you? Alexandra: I'm doing well. How are you doing? Victoria: Great, thank you. Alexandra: Good. Good. Well let me give our listeners a little bit of an introduction to you. Victoria Thompson is the best selling author of the Edgar and Agatha Award nominated Gaslight mystery series set in turn of the century New York City, featuring midwife Sarah Brandt and police Detective Frank Malloy. The 20th book in that series, "Murder in the Bowery" was published in May, 2017. Victoria also has a new historical series launching in November, 2017 which is set in 1917. The Counterfeit Lady series features a female con artist and an honest attorney. The first book is "City of Lies." In her spare time, Victoria is an instructor at Seton Hill University's masters degree program in writing popular fiction. And as I was just saying before we started to record, Victoria, I'm so excited to talk to you today because we both write historical mystery novels set in the late 19th century and with strong, sort of independent female heroines. So I just feel like you and I are kindred spirits right off the bat. Victoria: That's got to be the most interesting period in history to write about so I'm not surprised that you're interested in it. Alexandra: Yes. Tell me why it interests you. Victoria: Well, what I found when I started researching that era, and it was very surprising to me is, is that the issues that people were concerned about then are the same issues we're concerned about now. And really the only thing that has changed in 100 years is the technology. People are still dealing with all kinds of social issues, the same exact things they were concerned about finding Mr. Right and how do you find Mr. Right in this crazy world. How do you deal with immigrants? How do you deal with women's rights? All those kinds of things were very hot button issues then and nothing has changed in 100 years. Alexandra: Tell us a little about Sarah Brandt. She's a former socialite and now she's working as a midwife. Victoria: She was born to a Knickerbocker family. The Knickerbockers were the original Dutch settlers of New York so they're the oldest families in New York City, the social elite as it were. And because of a family tragedy she rebelled against her rich parents,
For the first Paper Team Live event, Alex and Nick go to WonderCon 2017 to host a panel on the dialogue between TV writers and their fans. This relationship has become a vital tool for many television shows — and one that is often very fickle. That's why we've invited writers and assistants from several beloved shows to share their thoughts on the issue. Panelists include Ray Utarnachitt (DC's Legends of Tomorrow), Jill Weinberger (Chicago Fire), Tennessee Martin (Lucifer), Diya Mishra (The Tick), and Taylor Brogan (The Shannara Chronicles). What does a typical conversation look like between a writers' room and their fandom? How much attention do TV writers pay to fans? Have fans' voices changed the course of a story or character? What is it like going from being a fan of a show to being involved directly in the creative decisions? The Paper Team goes live in room 209...
