Most stepmoms have a will. Almost none of them have a plan. And in a blended family, that gap can cost your stepkids their inheritance- or even cost you your home. Tara Yukawa- certified executor advisor, author, and stepdaughter- joins Cameron for a conversation that's equal parts wake-up call and practical roadmap. After navigating loss in her own blended family, Tara now helps others avoid the chaos, confusion, and conflict that happens when planning falls short. In this episode, she breaks down what actually happens when there's no plan- and how to make sure every child is protected. Key takeaways from this episode: Without a proper plan, stepchildren can legally inherit part of your home- and even force its sale "Everything goes to my spouse" can unintentionally disinherit your biological children A will alone isn't enough- you need a full plan (including trust and powers of attorney) to truly protect your family Resources shared: Tara Yukawa's Website Free Newsletter from Tara Before It's Too Late by Tara Yukawa Check out our YouTube channel where we share real-life stepfamily dynamics, expert advice, and practical tools you can actually use. In this heartfelt conversation, host Ned Schaut sits down with Gary Stache— a husband, father of five, grandfather of seven, and Vice Chairman with CBRE Capital Markets, Investment Properties — to explore what it really means to love unconditionally as a dad. Gary shares raw stories of raising a blended family, guiding kids through rebellion, and embracing both tough love and tender moments. With wisdom from 40 years in business and 30 years of parenting, Gary reveals why he never plans to retire, how faith shaped his role as a father, and why being present matters more than perfection. Most importantly, he reflects on raising his children with values and ensuring those values are passed down as the true legacy. His insights on marriage, mentorship, and modeling love will encourage every dad to embrace the messy adventure of fatherhood.Chapters:00:00:00 - Welcome to the Fatherhood Field Notes Podcast00:01:34 - Meet Gary00:02:10 - Family background and children00:02:46 - Career at CBRE and choosing not to retire00:04:47 - The father's role: loving unconditionally00:04:58 - Story: a cherished memory with his young daughter in a special dress00:05:53 - Becoming a stepfather and raising a blended family00:07:10 - Story: disciplining a stepson by removing his bedroom door00:09:35 - Tip for fathers: praying before disciplining children00:11:16 - Leading with love: beginning every hard talk with “I love you”00:11:53 - Overcoming the past: growing up without hearing “I love you”00:12:22 - Story: a teenage son showing affection00:14:17 - A blended family's honor: stepdaughter naming her child after him00:15:06 - Building unity: inviting his wife's ex-husband to family gatherings00:19:32 - Balancing discipline with fun and engagement00:20:05 - A united decision: asking the kids for permission to propose00:20:40 - Lessons from his father: valuing the outdoors and family first00:22:17 - A moment of healing: asking his father to say “I love you”00:23:40 - Advice for single men: letting God define your future wife00:27:21 - Loving adult children: allowing them to learn their own lessons00:29:21 - Rebelling against distraction: turning off the phone and avoiding social media00:32:43 - Continuing family valuesGuest Link:Gary Stache on LinkedInGary Stache – CBRE ProfileLinks and Resources:Transform Your Body with Ned & RUK Fitness: RUK FitnessThis episode is sponsored by The Adventure of FatherhoodOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?https://www.adventureoffatherhood.com/https://www.rebelandcreate.com/Each week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes...
My daughters join me to celebrate the milestone of 100 episodes! Considering I wouldn't be where I am without them, it's about time they made their stamp on the podcast! Each of the 100 messages have been personal as they've highlighted what we've learned and the things that we're in the process of walking through. Grateful for the growth and where our family stands today. More to come!
Do you fight in front of your kids? Well, you should! You may need to redefine what it means to 'fight' with your significant other and some of the rules around what is and isn't within bounds may need to change as well. Nonetheless, much can be learned from a dispute handled the right way. Our kids don't need to be exposed to any and every dispute, but they should witness the way that we handle and resolve conflict. Realizing that disagreement isn't the end of the world is a blessing that they carry into their relationships for years to come!
In this very special episode, I'm joined by my amazing stepdaughter, Teagan, as she celebrates her 15th birthday!
Are your kids drifting more toward their peers than toward you? In this episode, we dive into how to build lasting emotional connection with your children by prioritizing parental attachment over peer orientation—a concept championed by experts like Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Dr. Gabor Maté. We share real-life stories from our homeschool journey, raising stepchildren, and overcoming attachment challenges that so many modern families face. Learn how peer pressure quietly steals influence from parents—and what you can do to reclaim your role as the secure base your child needs.
Margo and I have a long list of the things that we love about one another, but we're not going to pretend that there's a list of things that we don't like. In fact, her words are "the most unattractive thing that you do" to be exact! I had no idea that sitting accross from one another and exchanging things that we aren't necessarily a fan of was a relationship goal of mine, but here we are. Grateful that we've grown to the point where this can take place without insecurity or a desire to take personal jabs taking over. We spend most of our time celebrating one another and sharing the things that we love, so we had a little fun humbling one another for close to an hour!

Pride takes down families. Simple as that. It is as deceptive as it is destructive. If we were to closely examine the issues related to marriage and divorce, as well as other relational conflicts, pride wouldn't be too hard to find. Unfortunately, we all deal with it to some degree. Humility, on the other hand, is what strengthens bonds and makes way for the wisdom that we need to overcome even the most significant relationship issues.
As a stepparent, you may be tempted to prefer your biological child over your step child. This can show up in the form of comparison, inconsistent execution of discipline, or the outright shunning of your stepkid(s). There are plenty of reasons or excuses that we may use to get to this point, but this outcome is not uncommon! Correcting course so that we're not depending on our bio kids to affirm our identity or soothe our bruised ego is a necessary step.
On this week's episode of our show, Captain Ingle and I set a course for the 23th century and the continually wacky adventures of Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise. When our heroes travel to a world of advanced beings basing their civilization on the teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, they soon find themselves performing for the amusement of their captors. Join us as we go boldly!
In this bonus episode, Jim Jackson and Ron Deal discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of blended families through the lens of the Connected Families Framework. Ron, a bestselling author and host of the Family Life Blended podcast, shares his 30+ years of expertise in step-family dynamics. The conversation explores how step-parents can build emotional […]
On today's episode we're diving into the grief, anger, and deep sense of betrayal that can hit when the kids you helped raise suddenly treat you like the outsider. Maybe you never thought of them as “step” anything—just family. And now, they act like you were never really theirs. We've addressed who it is that we prioritize during singlehood and the early stages of blending. It's time to talk about what comes first when things get serious. Getting this right for our family has not been easy, but it is without question one of our greatest achievements!
Disability Series, Episode #1 of 4. How and when scientists, doctors, and society started conceiving of the physical and emotional components of same-sex desire as a psychiatric condition of the mind? This was neither an ancient belief nor a postmodern (aka, post-1950) one, and it wasn't an exclusively American phenomenon either. Rather, the classification of same-sex desire as a “disorder” had its roots in the foundations of psychiatry as a profession in the 19th century. Over the last 100+ years, that classification impacted individuals all across the world. You've heard of Sigmund Freud, whose work in the 1920s standardized a form of talk therapy that sought to interpret actions, thoughts, and desires through a particular lens of analysis. “Psychoanalysis,” though short-lived as a psychiatric practice, was certainly part of the longer-term framing of queerness and transness as “mental illness.” But Freud is just the tip of the iceberg. Today we're digging into the history and relationship between psychiatry and sexuality; the scientific theories of sexuality that helped shape modern ideas about the relations between gender, genitals, desire, and identity; and the consequences of the medicalization of sexuality. While apologizing is can be considered difficult for obvious reasons, being on the receiving end of an apology can be just as hard for reasons that aren't so apparent. The temptation to open up the floodgates and pounce on the opportunity at hand can seem irresistable. Whether we want them to understand the full weight of their transgression, or we're hoping to share a little bit of the pain, being slightly petty during the "I'm sorry" is something we all have to face at some point. However, those long term results that we want, require grace and a whole lot of tact while we're in the process!
Another overlooked practice within the family unit, apologizing! This is a gift within every home and a skill to be developed. It's more than just saying "I'm sorry".... genuine apologies result in stronger connections as our homes choose the humility of admission over the pride of pointing the finger. Getting to this point takes time and what may feel like losses in the short term. However, the long-term benefits for the development of our kids and the intimacy within our marriages far outweighs the growing pains!
Through a thoughtful investigation, Disability in Ptolemaic Egypt and the Hellenistic World: Plato's Stepchildren (Routledge, 2024) reveals often-overlooked narratives of disability within Ptolemaic Egypt and the larger Hellenistic world (332 BCE to 30 BCE). Chapters explore evidence of physical and intellectual disability, ranging from named individuals; representations of people and mythological figures with dwarfism, blindness and vision impairments; cerebral palsy; mobility impairments; spinal disability; and medicine, healing, and prosthetics. Morris examines the historiographical ways in which disability has been approached, and how ancient disability histories are (mis)represented in various contemporary spaces. It uses terminology informed by the disability community and offers guidance for disability inclusivity in curatorial and pedagogical museum and university contexts, as well as prioritizing disability as an essential area of research in ancient world studies and assisting readers with the identification of ancient disability artefacts. The first-book length treatment of the subject, Disability in Ptolemaic Egypt and the Hellenistic World provides a much-needed resource for students and scholars of ancient Egypt, Egyptology, Classics, Classical Studies, and disability in the ancient world. It is also suitable for researchers in Disability Studies, practitioners in broader Ancient World Studies, and museum and heritage professionals. It is accessible to disabled people curious about their own history, as well as nondisabled people interested in disability history and those interested in a more accurate view of ancient Egyptian history. Move Along Home (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), S1 E10) was recommended by nazzy (she/her), who said: I cannot believe nobody has asked for this one yet!One of the earliest criticisms of DS9 was that it didn't "boldly go", and in its first two seasons in particular, there were a lot of episodes whose basic synopses read "Weird alien(s) come to the station, hijinks occur." And being a DS9 fan as always meant knowing that criticism is always just around the corner, which meant that for episodes like "Move Along Home", the standard response was an embarrassed shrug and a 'yeah...it hadn't found its feet yet. It got better!'And "Move Along Home" is the ur-example of this type of story. Weird aliens come to DS9, and introduce Quark to a strange board game of chance that traps members of the senior staff in a bizarre game world??? And that's the episode?!But then I read a review of "Move Along Home" that reframed the episode for me in a very meaningful way. "Move Along Home", it said, is basically a TOS episode. And that made so much sense! Is Commander Sisko having to play hopscotch and sing a children's song that different from the crew of the TOS Enterprise being forced to fight in "Plato's Stepchildren"? Or acting strangely to break the brains of the androids in "I, Mudd"? Suddenly, it made perfect sense, and "Move Along Home" is no longer embarrassing.Move Along Home first aired on March 14, 1993, written by story by Michael Piller, teleplay by Frederick Rappaport, Lisa Rich and Jeanne Carrigan-Fauci, and directed by David CarsonQuark plays a board game with the Wadi, a newly encountered species from the Gamma Quadrant, and the lives of the crew seemingly depend on the outcome. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook
Being a parent within the blended family dynamic is incredible! When things are hitting on all cylinders and we recognize traces of a ripple effect that we can trace back to our efforts, there's hardly a more satisfying feeling. There may also be moments when we ask, "what did I get myself into?" It's in these moments that we can begin to question whether we would have made the same decisions and taken that same path had we known what lay ahead. Listen in on this episode as I get real honest about the times that I've asked myself this same question, and I'll share a recent revelation that has completely changed my perspective!
Venting is an important part of regulating ourselves (a.k.a maintaining sanity), and it should be prioritized! Letting a little bit of air out over time keeps us from imploding when we least expect it. However, we can't release our stress and worries in whatever way we please. I've learned first hand that we can't be careless about how we go about the process. Being strategic about who we choose to share some of our most intimate and tumultuous experiences with is among the most important decisions that we can make. In short, learning to vent well is a life saver! Give proper attention to your mental wealth in 2025 by taking advantage of the Magic Mind 24 hour pack! The step-sibling relationship can be tough to navigate. At times you hear about the kids getting along as if they've been reunited with a long lost sibling. In other cases, it doesn't seem as if they can even stand being in the same room together. At the end of the day, the kids have likely experienced more than their fair share of pain. This makes it especially difficult for them to accept the significant changes that comes with blending a family. During this episode we acknowlege the experience of our kids and what may cause strain in their relationship as well as how we as parents can promote peace and loving connection with our efforts and example. Considering everything that a child experiences within the blended family, it makes sense that their happiness is would be such a high priority. For other parents, it's also very difficult to take emphasis away from the development of their character and skills because those areas aren't getting enough attention. Which parent are you?? Doing right by our children and raising them with their best interest in mind is no easy task. This is not an outcome that we'll ever achieve if we remain on autopiolot! We have to be intentional about the outcomes that we want for our children and how we'll go about achieving them. Talk about learning on the job! As stepparents we don't have all of the answers. In fact, there are times when it feels as if we have none. This comes with the territory. Five things that I wish I had known: Not all grown people are adults Heartbreak will become normal I am not defined by the failures or successes of my stepchild Teenagers kinda suck I can discern, but I cannot condemn We learn as we go, but it doesn't hurt to learn from the going of others!

Rerun: Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) embraced and kissed on "Plato's Stepchildren"; an episode of ‘Star Trek' broadcast on 22nd November, 1968 - just a year after the Supreme Court declared interracial marriage to be legal. However, despite popular belief that this was TV's first interracial kiss, it wasn't. It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on TV featuring William Shatner… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine just how slowly attitudes to ‘mixed marriage' were shifting in the United States; compare this iconic Trekkie moment to homoerotic frat-boy YouTube videos; and reveal how the actors concerned deliberately sabotaged ‘the wide' so their kiss would be screened coast-to-coast… Further Reading: • Kirk and Uhura kiss on ‘Star Trek' (Paramount Television, 1968): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThvEsP5-9Y • ‘'Star Trek's' interracial kiss 50 years ago boldly went where none had gone before' (NBC News, 2018): https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/star-trek-s-interracial-kiss-50-years-ago-went-boldly-n941181 • ‘Nichelle Nichols on filming the first interracial kiss on American television' (Archive of American Television, 2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hKKkGhEDoU ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' I took the time to answer some blended family questions that I'm sure each of us can relate to!

Chad Daybell was sentenced to death on Saturday after a jury recommended the penalty for his convictions of first-degree murder and conspiracy in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of his second wife's children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow. The case, driven by elements of power, sex, money, and apocalyptic spiritual beliefs, has captivated national attention. Judge Steven Boyce formally imposed the death sentence after the jury's lengthy deliberations concluded that the death penalty was appropriate. Daybell, who appeared with a blank expression as the judge read the sentence, also received a 15-year prison term for insurance fraud charges. The sequestered jury began their deliberations on Friday afternoon, taking six hours before pausing for the night. They resumed deliberations at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, reaching a verdict by 10:45 a.m. "This defendant exhibited utter disregard for human life," Prosecutor Rob Wood told the jury on Friday, asking them to consider several aggravating factors that warranted the death penalty. Wood emphasized that the murders were committed for financial gain, citing Daybell's conviction for insurance fraud related to life insurance policies that paid out after Tammy Daybell's death. Additionally, both Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell were convicted of grand theft for continuing to collect Social Security benefits for the children after their deaths. Wood further argued that the murders were “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity.” He described Daybell's actions as a clear threat to society, suggesting that his propensity for murder could continue. "It is your decision whether one or more of these aggravators has been proven. And if it has been, you must decide if, under these circumstances, imposition of the death penalty would be just or unjust," Wood concluded. The jury's decision was influenced by the contrasting portrayals of Daybell. Prosecutors painted him as a manipulative figure whose actions were driven by greed and apocalyptic beliefs. In contrast, the defense sought to humanize Daybell, emphasizing that he still had family who cared about him. The sensational nature of the case, which included claims of apocalyptic prophecies, "zombie" children, and illicit affairs, was highlighted in a 2022 Netflix true-crime documentary, further amplifying public interest. Chad Daybell's second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, was also convicted last year for the murder of her children and conspiring to kill Tammy Daybell. She is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole and has appealed her convictions, raising questions about her mental competency to stand trial. Authorities believe Tylee and JJ were killed in September 2019, the same month they were last seen. Tammy Daybell was found dead in her Idaho home on October 19, 2019, just weeks before Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow Daybell. During the trial, emotional testimonies from the victims' families illustrated the profound loss and grief caused by the murders. Colby Ryan, Tylee's brother, expressed his sorrow, saying, "I will never get to see my sister grow up or achieve her dreams. She was robbed of her life, and we were robbed of her presence." Larry Woodcock, JJ's grandfather, described JJ as "a light in our lives, cruelly extinguished." As the sentencing was handed down, the courtroom remained solemn. The decision to impose the death penalty on Chad Daybell underscores the severity of his crimes and the enduring impact on the victims' families. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of manipulative and violent behavior masked by extreme beliefs. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
