Do you remember playing the Telephone Game when you were a kid?  It was best played with a large group of kids sitting in a circle.  The first kid would think of a sentence (the longer the better) and whisper it into the ear of the kid sitting next to him, and so on.  By the time it went all the way around the circle, the result was inevitably quite different than the original sentence which started the game. That's what started to happen in our community and the communities surrounding it as Hannah's illness progressed.  We began to hear rumors that the word on the streets was that Hannah's death was "imminent" or that the doctors had given her "two weeks to live."  Neither of these things were true, at least as far as we knew, and we felt we needed to address these rumors before they went any further. Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode of the While We're Waiting podcast in this year-long series in which I share our family's experiences as our teenage daughter Hannah battled glioblastoma brain cancer from February 2008 through February 2009.  My desire is to process through the events of those twelve months with the perspective that 16 years has brought … and point listeners to hope in Jesus along the way.I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. Most people are familiar with the classic game of telephone where one person whispers a phrase to someone else seated next to them and that person then whispers what they heard to the next person, and so on. The game continues until the last person shares aloud what they heard, often bearing little resemblance to the original message.  Oregon ArtsWatch recently profiled an exhibit that opened in Lincoln City this month that showcases what happens when a group of local artists is invited to play telephone. But instead of a phrase that’s whispered, here the prompt came in the form of two photographs, including one of the Oregon coast taken at sunset. Each of the participating artists had only the work that preceded them for inspiration to interpret visual details, colors or objects they saw or imagined, and chose to pass on in their rendering for the next artist. The result is 18 works in a variety of different media, from watercolors to sculpture, fiber art to spray paint, some bearing little resemblance to the work that came before it. Krista Eddy is the visual arts director at the Lincoln City Cultural Center and the creator of the exhibit. She and Sam Jacobson, a featured artist based in Cascade Head, join us to talk about “The Telephone Game Group Invitational” which is on display until Feb. 11 at the Chessman Gallery at LCCC.

And she'd then whisper to the next kid and he'd whisper to the next and by the time the whispered sentence had made it around once, it was utterly distorted, often not recognizable to the original. Welp. That's gossip. Wendy's putting a finer point on this today.

This is a public episode. The Nonlinear Library
EA - Why we're getting the Fidelity Model wrong by Alishaandomeda

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why we're getting the Fidelity Model wrong, published by Alishaandomeda on December 17, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a Draft Amnesty Day draft. That means it's not polished, it's probably not up to my standards, the ideas are not thought out, and I haven't checked everything. I was explicitly encouraged to post something unfinished! Commenting and feedback guidelines: I'm going with the default — please be nice. But constructive feedback is appreciated; please let me know what you think is wrong. Feedback on the structure of the argument is also appreciated. This is a response to The fidelity model of spreading ideas - EA Forum (effectivealtruism.org), the associated CEA blog post, plus those who have referenced it in good-spirited debate about how EA comms ought to develop in the coming years. Epistemic status: As confident as anyone experienced enough in manipulating the whims of social media algorithms for social change can ever be, given that they change semi-regularly. 6+ years of experience using social media to effect social change, including advising politicians on their use of social media, conducting experimental social media for social change projects that have informed national political party strategies, and training upwards of 500+ activists. Overview This post is an exploration of the Fidelity Model, an approach to the spreading of ideas that is widely referenced within EA spaces. While I am broadly supportive of the fidelity model and agree with its central premises, I disagree with one influential interpretation of it: that we shouldn't use social media to communicate key EA ideas. This interpretation of the argument is claimed to be central to CEA's social media scepticism, which I argue is misplaced. I am more sympathetic to the mass media scepticism this argument also brings about. I explain why having an "official presence" on social media is important using the Fidelity Model. Social media is an important communications model, even if social media itself is low-fidelity. The Fidelity Model I am taking this from the original post, so as to keep our arguments clear and consistent. Definition Fidelity The key term in this model is "fidelity." Therefore it will be useful to define this term. By fidelity [the original author has] in mind nothing more than the classic dictionary definition of "adherence to fact or detail" or "accuracy; exactness." As an example, imagine I am shooting a movie on an old camera. If the image captured by the camera causes it to seem as though I am wearing a blue shirt when actually my shirt is red, then the image captured by the camera is low fidelity. The problem With reference to The Telephone Game, the author of the original argument accepts that "EA" ideas and arguments are nuanced and worries that some methods of communication require that the nuance be stripped back in order to be easily communicable. When the context gets stripped away, those who receive the ideas leave with something that's similar to effective altruism, but different. Thus, when we hear the EA message repeated back to us, we get sentences like "EA is about earning all the money you can and donating it to GiveWell charities" or "EAs only care about interventions that are supported by randomized controlled trials." To a certain extent we can influence the sentences we get back by being more clever about how we frame our ideas, but it seems unlikely that framing can do all the work. How we get to social media scepticism Very few people who use social media believe it to be a high-fidelity information exchange space. Platforms like Twitter, with low character counts and a norm towards fast-paced argument threads, are particularly bad at fostering nuanced debate. EA ideas are nuanced, and when they aren't covered with that nuance in m...

Have you ever played, “The Telephone Game”? As the time drew near for our risen Savior to ascend into heaven, He assured the disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit. And one of the reasons for this was to ensure that the disciples didn't find themselves playing some version of this game when it came to relaying His teaching and the events of the Gospels. God Himself made sure of it.

So how surprising must have been to find out that, in fact, they were also being outsourced by the company the client was actually hiring, right?  So this messed up chain of command that looked much more like a children's phone game obviously needed to end up blowing, and the blow up involved everything from delayed payments, micromanaging, and even end up talking sh*t about your not-so-partner on the phone with the main company.  This story gives us a lesson on confidence, integrity, upfrontness, and being able to call for an attorney once the situation begins to get weird. And all of it in the times where “Influencer Marketing” was just called “Working with bloggers”.  Links:  Stephanie Schwab Crackerjack Morgan Friedman

Have you heard of the Telephone Game? In this game, one person whispers something into another's ear. The second person then repeats the words to the third person. The third passes on the message to the fourth. And the chain continues. By the time the message comes to the last person, it sounds nothing like the original message! This is pretty much what happens in today's story, called The Rumor, written by Anushka Ravishankar and published by Karadi Tales, and it has vibrant illustrations by Kanyika Kini.

This week on With(in), we speak with Sarah and the woman who gave her the hardest time when she came to prison, Terrina Flora Alexander. We trace their relationship back to the beginning, looking to understand why Terrina decided to target Sarah, and how Terrina’s life experiences impacted how she viewed Sarah and her case. Denise, Draper and Ashley explore the hierarchy of crime that exists both within and beyond the prison gates, and why some crimes seem to be more “acceptable” than others. But first I will set the table: Did you ever play the “Telephone Game” as kid? Where one person whispers a message to the next and finally the last person announces what she heard? Usually her announcement is very different from the original message. That’s the way most of us hear. The message becomes distorted. Not because the speaker is listening but because the message goes through our own internal filters and conditioning. We listen just long enough to formulate a response and then many of us do not wait to speak we interrupt, overtalk just to have our say. A message is sent but is it received? Do we really hear what has been said? When having an intentional chat we have some ground rules. After making sure the listener is ready to listen -- listen to episode one for more on making sure the time is right to have an intentional chat. But how do you listen? TO LISTEN Give your partner a chance to really share her thoughts by sitting face to face, heart to heart, belly to belly, maintaining gentle (loving not confrontational) eye contact and take in what she has to say without focusing on what you might say next. This is really listening. You may think – I know what she is going to say. Well, you do not and, even if this is the fiftieth time you have had the same argument, give your partner the respect of listening. You will be rewarded for it in so many ways. It is okay to nod, reach out and hold hands, or rub a knee but do not interrupt. Interrupting is disrespectful. It says that what I want to say is more important than what you are saying. Love requires respect! Let your partner have her say and just receive the message. So this is tip number 2 -- listen Here is question number 2 -- 2. When did you last notice that you appreciate what I bring to your life? Listener this is a question that is likely to make the speaker feel very vulnerable. Please do not use this opening as an opportunity to unload, criticize, blame or shame. Leave the bad memories of the past in the past and for this question, especially, only bring forward something good. What we focus on grows so for these intentional chats, let’s focus on the good. And with this question you are going to shift from listener to speaker. As you make the shift uses “I” language and tell her the last time or the most powerful memory of when you were most appreciative of the speaker’s presence in your life as you maintain gentle eye-contact. repeat 2. When did you last notice that you appreciate what I bring to your life? Listener please answer this question! It is an opening to more love and trust. Here is the quote of the day to encourage you: from ANONYMOUS What we see around us matters far less than the truths that we hold in our hearts. Share that good truth you hold in your heart dear listener! Also, so that you are both on the same page, share this episode of the Beyond36 podcast with the person you would like to ask this question. It will help you both to be on the same page and ready to have an intentional chat!

Have you ever wondered if there’s a better way to read the Bible? There are many methods of storing up God’s Word in our hearts, but there are some pitfalls we need to watch out. Today we are learning out to read our Bible better by engaging our minds. Be a She Proves Faithful Teammate for Just $5 a Month! Hey! Are you enjoying the SPF Podcast? I'd love to have you as a SPF Teammate to keep this podcast up and running and keep producing great content. Consider a $5 a month partnership with me at patreon.com/sheprovesfaithful LIFE Hack: Cream of Yum Soup You don't have to use those cream of yuck soups in the store - simply follow this recipe! 2 TBSP Butter 2 TBSP Flour 1 Cup of Milk Favorite seasonings and salt Spinach, mushrooms, cooked chicken, etc Simmer butter and flour together for a few minutes, add milk and spices and stir. Add chopped spinach, or chopped mushrooms, or cooked chicken. Add it to soups, casseroles, etc. Easy Crowd Pleasing Chicken and Rice Casserole This is a great recipe to feed 10 people. Depending on the size of your casserole dish, you may need two. 4 chicken breast cooked in slow cooker with a little water or broth and salt - shred it 2 cups cooked rice Cream of YUM soup recipe above - double it with chopped spinach shredded mozzarella or cheesy blend salt and seasoning to taste Mix shredded crock pot chicken and two cups of cooked white rice in large bowl Pour cream of YUM over chicken and rice and mix with spoon until nice and creamy Add any extra seasoning to taste Pour into casserole dishes and top with cheese If chicken and rice are already warm - bake at 350 for twenty minutes then broil HI until cheese is bubbly. If chicken and rice are cold (from being previous cooked) - bake at 350 for 40 minutes or until warmed through and broil HI until cheese is bubbly. Sola Feels Sometimes we read the Bible with our feelings first, when we need to engage our minds and let our feelings follow. Babylon Bee (a fake satirical "news" site) published an article called Sola Feels to illustrate the Christian culture's bent toward feelings. Read the article here (remember it's fake): http://babylonbee.com/news/progressive-evangelical-leaders-meet-affirm-doctrine-sola-feels/ Facts first - know the Truth of God's Word Faith second - put faith in the Truth Feelings third - let them fall in line with the Truth and be carried to true joy! Some ways we put our feelings first when reading the Bible: When we interpret the truth in a different way because it messes with our feelings Xanax approach - going to isolated Scriptures to make us feel better making the Bible about serving us and making us feel better Pinball approach - good intentions but we miss the wholeness of God's plan and can fail to give us context that engages our mind Magic Eight Ball - the Bible doesn't provide answers our whims and isn't just used to give us personal direction about our decisions Telephone Game - when we know the Word through other people's books instead of gaining Bible literacy through reading the Bible Numbers 2-5 come from Jen Wilkin's book Women of the Word which you can purchase on Amazon or local Christian bookstore. Better Bible Reading When we read the Word with our minds first and let our feelings follow, that is better Bible reading. Luke 10:27  “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Romans 12:2"Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Luke 5:1-11 Peter saw Jesus differently when He obeyed Him and one of the first things he saw was his sin. Reading the Bible should convict our hearts of sin and righteousness and the character of God. Tips 1. Read the Bible with our minds to gain understanding, not just to feel something 2. Understand the context and history of the book to gain a better understanding 3. Wrestle with the Scriptures before going to the commentaries 4. Know what the text says first before we decide it's meaning 5. Read the Bible to know the Lord of Glory Resources Read Psalm 39 :) Good Questions to ask for Better Bible Reading: 1. What does this say about God? 2. What is God like? What has God done? 3. Who am I in light of this passage? How do I respond to God? In Part Two of our series on the Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter, we analyze the elements of the Sutton and Taylor families' story. Is the tale that ended up in the media what actually happened or were certain descriptions exaggerated to make the story more sensational in order to sell newspapers? Perhaps some details were misreported due to anxiety, faulty memories and the phenomenon of the "Telephone Game?" Or was it all a hoax and for what gain? What we find is that the story in its original and accurate telling is so bizarre, any further embellishment would be pointless and believe it or not, that's the story the families stuck to, which only serves to add more mystery to an already mysterious world. Searching For Ghosts: Where Is Bethany Markowski?

In a case like this, there are a ton of theories. In August, it will be twenty-one years. Twenty-one years since Cayce McDaniel vanished. In that span of time, a lot of things can happen. Potential sources pass away. Recollections from people close to the case become fuzzy.     There is this game called Chinese Whispers. In the United States, it is known as The Telephone Game. In this game, one person whispers a message in the ear of the next person in line. The second person does the same thing to the person next to them and so on. The last player announces the message to the entire group. The objective is for the first person and the last person to have the same message. But errors happen in the retelling, and depending on how many people are playing the game, many times, the last message in no way resembles the original one.   While this makes for wonderful child’s play, it can cause high blood pressure and hair loss when it comes to investigating a twenty-one year old missing persons case.   I’m Brandon Barnett. And this is Searching For Ghosts.   This case is the Chinese Whispers game on steroids. After twenty-one years, the stories didn't just morph, they attained urban legend status. And these stories are the ones that always include the disclaimer of “I know what happened” from the people who tell them.   The stories that are repeated most, seem to have the least amount of hard evidence behind them. Obviously, they can’t be ignored—they might be true…or at least have a kernel of truth in them.    Then you have the one off stories. The ones where a name comes up that you’ve never heard before…and you never hear again. Once again, you don’t want to ignore this information, but these stories hardly ever lead anywhere. So you file them away in your notes and move on.   Then you have the stories that are not as prevalent. But you have two or more sources who give similar accounts with similar details. And sometimes these correlate with news reports. Those are the ones that interest me the most.   The idea is to walk this thing slowly, and look at the reports carefully and objectively.   Obviously something was missed in this case. And I see no point in blazing through everything and making the same mistakes some two decades later.     I noticed something in the first article of the Mirror-Exchange concerning Cayce’s disappearance. At the end of the article, the author gives some family history with a seemingly out of place piece of information concerning a “friend” of Cayce.   QUOTE “Cayce’s parents are divorced. Her father, Ronnie Mcdaniel is living near South Fulton. He’d recently been injured in a motorcycle accident. Cayce reportedly had been friends with a Milan teenager who is now being held on federal charges in a McNairy County jail. She also has an uncle living in Florida and an aunt in Knoxville." UNQUOTE   That passage struck me as odd when I first read it. That kind of information would either take a little digging or it came from a tip. It’s in the article for a reason.   I later received a tip from a reporter who remembered an in-depth Jackson Sun series that revealed that Cayce was pen pals with someone in prison.     Then, the day after releasing the bonus episode, I received those back articles of Cayce’s disappearance from the Jackson Sun newspaper in Jackson, TN. And there is some gold in there.   From the September 15, 1996 edition of The Jackson Sun.   QUOTE Once, a year ago, Cindy heard Cayce talking on the phone to a young man named Charlie she’d met at church.  I said something about him to a friend and she was horrified. Cindy, she said,He’s 18. And I jumped Cayce about it. She told me I just didn’t know him.   And I said, I don’t care if he’s the pope, he’s too old for you and you’re not to call him. She thought she was going to turn his life around. He was the first one I checked on, but he’s in the McNairy County jail. UNQUOTE And this information verified what Kathy had said a few weeks prior:         In Episode 2: Valorie, I talked about a rumor that Cayce had used a phone at the church to make a call. Dawn/Kathy   I asked former Lead Investigator Jerry Hartsfield if he remembered investigating a phone call made from the church by Cayce. He had no knowledge of any phone call being made.  Hartsfield   There is also nothing in the news reports we have recently obtained about any phone call being made from the church. Is this just an urban legend or an oversight by police? Because without there being a working phone at Cindy’s house, any call made by Cayce would be a game changer as to her whereabouts after she left the church.   I had a source ask a member of the church who was there in 1996, about the phone situation from back then. The church member indicated that it would’ve been a church phone and not a pay phone that Cayce would’ve used.   Then I received word from a source that there was a letter written to Cayce some months before she went missing. So I set up an interview to see what this was all about. This source stated that Cindy had possession of this letter at the time, and that she let my source read it. It was from an adult authority figure who stated that God was telling him that Cayce was to be his virgin. That was the only detail given to me, but my source said that it was Quote “Creepy” Unquote.   I was also told that Cindy, Cindy’s boyfriend Steve and Joe, her brother, took matters into their own hands. This was also confirmed in the interview I did with Kathy.       There is nothing in news reports to substantiate this, so I again contacted former lead investigator Jerry Hartsfield to see if law enforcement knew about the letter at the time.       There seemed to be a pattern of adult men showing an interest in the underage Cayce. This is unsettling at best. This type of thing sets up a scenario that could easily lead to a motive to do harm to Cayce. Do these things have anything to do with Cayce’s disappearance? Is the letter real? Was this the doing of a delusional older man who felt that God was speaking to him in this manner?   There is one person who can either confirm or deny the existence of this letter. One person who might even still possess it and knows who the author is. That person is Cindy McDaniel, Cayce’s mother.   An update on Cindy: I’ve heard from family members that she has been released from jail. I’ve sent word that I still want to speak with her.   There are so many questions that only she can answer. And she can remove the cloud of suspicion hanging over her by coming on this podcast.   Cindy, when you’re ready to talk, I’ll be here. Waiting.

Scaling Up Business Podcast

Daniel Marcos is the CEO and co-founder of Gazelles Growth Institute as well as a certified coach of Gazelles International Coaches. Daniel has coached individuals all over the world and works with a wide range of businesses from the million-billion dollar range. Today, Daniel and I focus on the 4 key stages of growth in a business. Let's dive in. After being an entrepreneur for the last 16 years, Daniel has realized that the decisions you have to take in each growth stage are completely different and this is where CEOs seem to face the most trouble. CEOs often want to execute the same decision for each stage and they often encounter a substantial amount of pain points with this method along the way. If you want to grow your company, the first bottleneck is you, the leader. Companies need to evolve the leader from an entrepreneur to a CEO and turn their startup into a well-run organization. Daniel defines each stage by the quantity of employees on payroll instead of the amount of sales that are generated. His reasoning for this, he says, is that as the company gets larger, people find it more and more difficult to communicate throughout the organization. The first stage is a startup and everyone is wearing different hats in the company. The most important part during this stage is product development and understanding what it is you are selling and to whom you're selling the product to. Stage two is the small business. The company size ranges between 6-15 employees. The entrepreneur now has to be a leader. Once a leader, he/she has to do two very important things to keep this status – learn how to give directions to your team and delegate tasks. Daniel believes stage two is the hardest stage for the entrepreneur, because both your clients and employees expect more of you. Stage three means you're a leader of leaders. You have between 16-250 employees and now the most critical role is you building up team leaders. You have to develop talent and teach people how to lead others. The problem during stage three is communication, because communication gets broken as the chain of command goes further down. It's almost like you're playing the Telephone Game. At the end of the day, you have to respect the position of your leaders. As an entrepreneur, you get so used to fixing everything, but at this stage you need to give up some control and trust in the people you've trained. You have to begin to shine the spotlight on them instead of you. This is why most CEOs are stuck at stage three and are not able to move on to stage four. To get to stage four, you have to be humble and really let go. Your role is to have a great first layer of executives. If you have a great sales manager, for example, you will never have a sales problem. Though, as Daniel points out, we secretly don't want a great sales manager, because then we know we won't be needed anymore. What does stage four look like? The operation runs flawlessly without you. You leave for vacation and everything is absolutely fine when you come back. The entrepreneur, turned leader, turned leader of leaders - is now an innovator, change catalyst, and chief of culture in the organization. Your duty is to design a culture that's respected all through the organization and to change what's currently not working within the company.   Interview Links: Growth Institute Website More Resources: ScalingUpBusiness.com:  Learn about how growth coaching can help you and and your business see big results. An SLT Update, & the Value of Simple w/Joel Zaslofsky Well, we're a little over 6 months into this "whole blog/podcast thing" and we figured it was time for an update. Actually, we're probably way overdue for an update! There are some things upcoming that you may be interested in and we'll also be taking a little bit of a break as we head into our summertime family working vacation. But the highlight of this week's episode is an interview with a good friend of ours, and fellow simplicity aficionado, Joel Zaslofsky of the Value of Simplicity blog and the amazing Smart and Simple Matters podcast! Simple Life Together Update:     We wanted to let you know some things that are going on with us and the show: Photo organization: We’ve talked about this in the past and it’s probably one of the most requested topics we get. We’re still researching and asking the pro’s for some tips, so you can look forward to that in the next couple of months. Dan will be doing an Evernote tutorial, too, at some point. He's been waiting for the dust to settle and now is ready to start working on it.  If you have any special requests regarding Evernote, drop Dan a note at Dan@SimpleLifeTogether.com. Finally, we’ll be on the road a bit for the next month or so...we’ll be in Portland for Chris Guillebeau’s World Domination Summit for the 3rd year in a row and then we have some mixed business & fun time with family throughout July and early August. We typically release shows every Thursday but for July we'll have shows on the 4th and 18th and then pick back up in August! Interview with Joel Zaslofsky of the Value of Simple We had an amazing interview with Joel Zaslofsky...creator of the awesome Smart and Simple Matters podcast and the Value of Simple blog. He’s incredibly open about his journey from a six-figure corporate job to carving out a niche online, while shaping his simple lifestyle. He offers tons of tips and free resources on his website to help you "liberate your time, money and talent."  We were thrilled to be his guests on Episode 15 of the Smart and Simple Matters show back in January and we’ve been dying to have Joel on our show. Well, we finally made that happen and it was fantastic!  You don't want to miss this interview!  Here are some of the questions and things we talked about: - So Joel, who are you and how do you make people's lives simpler? - So, you talk about your “Personal Renaissance.” Can you describe what that is, what it’s been like for you, and how it has led to a simpler/more focused life? - Can you tell us a little about the backstory of “liberate your time, money and talent” as it relates to you, your clients and your people who follow your work? - Tell us about your love for spreadsheets and some ways you use them to simplify your life. - How would you define curating, what do you curate personally, and how do you think others could benefit from curating? - Batman has his Batcave, the Super Friends had the Hall of Justice, and you have the Refuge of Simplicity! Can you share what goes on there? - Can you give us any tips about “keeping it simple” with a family? - For a lot of people, the whole “investment thing” is complicated. You address simplifying that in your online course “Start Investing with $100.” Can you share a little about that? - So Joel, what have we left out that is “must know” info for our listeners?
