The great Amy Seeley comes back to Jagbags to talk the music of the legendary Akron-based band Devo. We go through their discography, discuss their enduring influence, what made them more than just a rock band, and offer reasons why they may now be even more popular than ever. Hear about Amy's Mark Mothersbaugh sighting in LA! We also construct our respective "Best of Devo" 45-minute playlists, and talk all-time favorite Devo albums. Remember -- we can have no serious discussions about Rock Hall nominees while Devo remain unenshrined. JAGBAGS!

Gerald Casale's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as co-founder and bass player of the new wave band Devo, which released a Top 20 hit in 1980 with the single "Whip It". Casale is the main lyricist and one of the main composers of Devo's music and directed most of Devo's music videos. He is one of only two members (along with lead singer and keyboardist Mothersbaugh) who have been with Devo throughout its entire history. Casale's brother Bob also performed with the band.Casale pursued a solo career in 2005 while still a member of Devo with the project Jihad Jerry & the Evildoers. The project received little promotion beyond a music video for the single "Army Girls Gone Wild." Jihad Jerry performed at several shows near the end of Devo's 2006 tour, performing the song "Beautiful World". He has also performed occasionally with other bands.Casale has also directed music videos for other recording artists, including The Cars ("Touch and Go"), Rush ("Mystic Rhythms"), A Perfect Circle ("Imagine"), Foo Fighters ("I'll Stick Around"), Soundgarden ("Blow Up the Outside World"), and Silverchair ("Freak" and "Cemetery"), among others.Learn more about Lyte.

In 2019, Saves the Day’s debut LP, Through Being Cool, turned 20. Unsurprisingly, the New Jersey band marked the event on the road, with a tour that found them playing the album in its entirety. Two decades and nine full lengths in, a lot has changed for the band, including several lineup shifts that have left frontman Chris Conley as the sole founding member. Now 40, the musician has come a long way from the teenager who penned one of emo’s most iconic debuts. Conley is now the parent to a teenager himself. But through all the ups and downs, his music has remained a constant. Hitting a major milestone has given him ample opportunity to reflect on his work and where he and the band go from here.
Can't Slow Down. Emo songwriting sweetheart, lyricist and frontman Chris Conley is our guest on Episode 59 of Sappenin' Podcast! Twenty years ago, emo wasn't a Hot Topic brand or a nostalgic DJ night. It was the sound of teenagers and twenty-somethings taking the urgency of punk, combining it with emotional and confessional (re: not sad) lyrics, and playing to a generation of kids too young for the early 90s grunge wave. If you were apart of that scene, hitting all-ages venues or DIY punk houses at the end of the 20th century, there's a chance you caught Saves The Day on one of those nights, perhaps after the release of their 1999 album Through Being Cool. Joining us to discuss the 20th anniversary of the record is lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Chris Conley, sharing thoughts on making and revisiting the album for its re-release, the emo label, touring then and now, being a rock 'n' roll parent, and much more. In my late high school and early college years I listened to one album more than any other album in all the years before and since. "Through Being Cool" by Saves the Day was on constant rotation day and night. 33 minutes and 22 seconds making up 12 songs of pure emo-punk perfection. I was sure it was the greatest feat of musicianship and lyrical content ever created. What kind of transcendent lyrical content am I talking about? How about; "And my spleen is dripping from my pants."If you're not sold by that little nugget, I'm not sure what you're doing with your life. If that album came out today exactly as it was back in 1999 would it still be the monolith of music in my life? Very doubtful. It's hard to be as angsty and driven by frustrated heartbrokenness when you have a mortgage, a minivan and you're coaching 6-7 year old soccer. The reason that album holds such a special place in my life is due to it's timing and what I was experiencing. I'm not a static institution that remains unchanged throughout life. The ability of different kinds of art to deeply connect with us changes as we change. Often we identify pieces of art for their transcendence without ever acknowledging half of the equation. We talk about the book, film, music or painting for all that it possesses without ever acknowledging that thing that it is being processed through.Us. This message continues to go through our Biblio-Idolatry message series led by Scott Erickson. He helps us uncover half of the equation of the Bible's impact by posing the question, what do you want from the Bible?I hope you enjoy!(And yes, I did listen to "Through Being Cool" again while writing this)
We had the opportunity to interview Chris Conley of Saves the Day. “Saves the Day is an American rock band from Princeton, New Jersey, formed in 1997. The band currently consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Conley, guitarist Arun Bali, bassist Rodrigo Palma, and drummer Dennis Wilson. After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day released their debut studio album, Can't Slow Down, in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel". Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success of Stay What You Are, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart. Their latest LP, titled '9', was released on October 26 in 2018.” Source: Wikipedia Credits: Theme Song: Scott Russo & Design: Oscar Rodriguez & Photo Credit: Alice Baxley We want to hear from you! Technically, Chris Conley has only been in one band in his life — and what a band it is! In their 20-plus years as a band, Saves The Day has toured the world many times over, released nine studio albums and made some deeply influential music that has helped define a genre. Before he was the lead singer, founding member and bandleader of the band the world knows as Saves The Day, Conley was a teenager in Princeton, New Jersey, who set aside his classical training in cello in favor of a guitar. While in middle school, Conley started a band known as Indifference, which was later called Sefler and, eventually, Saves The Day. Earlier this month, when Saves The Day was in Milwaukee as part of a tour with Joyce Manor, Conley took some time before the show to meet My First Band host Tyler Maas in the Turner Hall Ballroom balcony and revisit his long-running project's interesting origin. There, the singer talked about playing with future emo and hardcore heavyweights in New Jersey's then-unproven DIY scene, getting signed when he was still in high school, recording Through Being Cool over a 13-day span over his winter break in college and being faced with the choice to either continue his education or seriously pursue music. Over the course of the conversation, Conley explains the importance Bane had on his band's success and Maas makes exactly no effort to hide how much he loves Saves The Day. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Saves The Day ("1997" and "Suzuki").
Holy moley! Special guest and pop-punk-superfan Jess Perry drops in to present one of her and Heather's favorite albums, Saves the Day's 1999 opus "Through Being Cool!" Will Ramsey take the lead singer's anger a little too personally? Will everyone spend too much time examining the album art for 90s fashion? And can anyone justify the band's insane pronunciation of a normal word like "dog?" All this and MORE!

We take this episode to answer the questions plaguing the universe, with such dusty chestnuts as: How old were we when Terminator 2 came out? How do owls kill the chicken? How much would it cost for you to Feldman? Plus, we talk for too long about Brandon Dicamillo and Widman Wes regales us with a Christmas tune for his native people. All this an more, on this episode of Through Being Cool. You don't want to miss it.

Saves the Day, at it since 1997, has had their share of ups and downs but through it all they struck a chord with fans and still do to this day. I had the pleasure of having Saves the Day be my one and only band I ever booked. Sold out pizza restaurant in the middle of North Carolina after only booking one boysetsfire show. Take that Facebook Events. Also, vivid memories of worn out cassette tapes of "Can't Slow Down" and "Through Being Cool" that are still so near and dear to my heart. Chris was gracious enough to sit down with WashedUpEmo.com prior to their latest headlining tour in support of the new self-titled album. We spoke about Saves the Day's first show, the term "Emo Rock Stars," meanings behind the song "Shoulder to The Wheel," who designed one of their classic album covers and Chris' favorite Sean McGrath memory. Listening back, it's great to see how happy Chris is at this point in his life and how much he is enjoying the ride. I couldn't be happier, I hope you are too after listening to this one. Enjoy.
