The world needs plant-based spam. Nootropic beverages will make a comeback in 2025. T-shirts are the best brand swag. It's buy-or-sell time, and the hosts transact in opinions. This episode also features interviews with the leaders of two fast-growing U.K.-based CPG companies: Jack Scott, the co-founder of flavored sparkling water brand Dash, and Kathryn Bricken, the founder of Doughlicious, a brand of frozen cookie dough and gelato bites. Show notes: 0:25: No Results. We're Available. Mindcraft. Un-Appealing. Brand Brush. Call It A Comeback. Like, Thanks. – Election Day has come and gone, but the hosts still don't know who won. Earnings Call Analysis: Jones Soda - JSDA

PSFK's PurpleList

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2024 3:16

The recent Earnings Call held by executives at Jones Soda on Thursday, March 14th, 2024, offered some important insights into the company's performance over the past quarter, as well as their strategies for future growth. Financially, the company showcased an unforeseen resilience against a backdrop of decreasing net revenue, primarily due to a drop in sales from foodservice outlets and grocery channels. Despite facing financial challenges, the Mary Jones line, one of their business units, has achieved significant revenue in the excedence of $1 million in 2023. The company further displayed the effort to maintain cost discipline, targeting consistent gross margins in the mid-thirties, underscoring their commitment to profitability. CEO of Jones Soda, David Knight, shared during the recent call with investors, "As I continue to become further engrained in the operations of Jones Soda and see the opportunities at hand, I have become more and more confident in our ability to take this company to new heights." This comment outlined his determination to deliver excellent taste and growth via both innovation and marketing, setting the stage for broader scale achievement that has been pursued by Jones Soda before. In terms of product development, Jones Soda is focusing on key initiatives, the creation of a new Foodservice division being one among them. This strategic decision aims at capitalizing on extensive growth opportunities across multiple channels. The company's commitment to catering to evolving consumer preferences is evident in their innovative product launches, such as Nuka-Cola Victory and Spiked Jones. Regarding consumer trends, it was acknowledged during the earnings call that there is growing consumer demand for THC-infused beverages, an area where the Mary Jones brand can potentially thrive. In response to these changing consumer behaviors, Jones Soda has plans to extend their THC-infused beverage offerings to Ontario and other provinces. Despite the organization's present challenges, Knight voiced optimism regarding their future plans, emphasizing their pursuit towards delivering unique and compelling product offerings across a range of channels and categories. Conclusively, the company has future plans to strengthen their Foodservice division, introduce flavored soda water, launch new special release flavors, and also raise their presence of the Mary Jones brand. The company also plans to broaden its geographical reach and examine stock uplift options, in addition to generating additional capital to support further growth. To conclude, based on the information provided in the Earnings Call, Jones Sodas has shown potential for growth through their focused approach towards innovation, strategic capital allocation, and intent to branch out into various markets. However, one should remember that successful execution of their planned initiatives, coupled with an expanded product portfolio, will be vital in delivering shareholder value and achieving sustainable growth. Moreover, their clear strategic roadmap presents them a certain advantage but navigating the changing beverage market will be the ultimate determinant in their continued journey upwards. Implicit to all these factors is understanding that these claims and outlook are based on what Jones Soda company stated or acknowledged to investors during the earnings call. How's it growing folks?! Today, I'm clearing the smoke around one of the fastest growing sectors in cannabis: the beverage industry. Currently, according to cannabis-industry tracking firm Headset, cannabis beverages make up about 1% of cannabis sales nationally. In some legal states, that ticks up a little higher, but right now, consumers seem to be sticking to pre-rolls, vaping and good ole fashioned smoking when it comes to ingesting cannabis. However, that isn't stopping a slew of brands, some small start-ups and others nationally recognized soda companies, from jumping into the space and trying their hands at penetrating the ever-growing cannabis market. To help get a better understanding of what makes cannabis-infused beverages so unique, I spoke with both a representative from a whole new brand, and a representative for an internationally established beverage company. What I found is that the challenges for beverage makers in the cannabis space are more complex than just making a good-tasting soda, tea or seltzer. First, I spoke with Laura Jarmillo-Bernal, the COO of NuEra Cannabis, a vertically integrated cannabis company based out of Illinois with a presence in multiple states (including Arizona) and that sports six dispensary locations and a litany of brands, including their new soft drink Riseau, a CBD-infused seltzer which recently launched here in Arizona. Jarmillo-Bernal explains how Riseau came to be, why NuEra is testing out the product in Arizona first, and what she thinks is needed for cannabis beverages to succeed in a crowded marketplace. Next, I interviewed Bohb Blair, the CMO for Jones Soda Co. and the Chief Brand Officer for Jones Soda's latest project: Mary Jones Cannabis. Blair and I delve into the reasoning behind Jones Soda, a nationally recognized brand known for their creative flavors and fun bottles, entering into the cannabis space, why a company likes Jones Soda is uniquely positioned to make inroads into the market and why he thinks consumers have been so slow to drink beverages that can get you high. Be sure to listen until the episode's end where I'll be doing a ticket give-away for ChronicCon, the biggest and best cannabis festival in Southern Arizona set for May 20th here in Tucson! We've spoken to many entrepreneurs and business leaders in the cannabis industry, and we've noticed one overarching theme: everyone is very new and still figuring it out as they go. Even in the most mature markets, things are constantly changing, and new categories are emerging all the time. Today's guest, Bohb Blair, is relatively new to the industry but has a proven knack for reinvention. He's the Chief Marketing Officer at Jones Soda–one of the very first craft soda brands to make a splash over two decades ago. These days, Jones is making a name for themselves with Mary Jones Cannabis, their new cannabis-infused beverage and edibles brand, and Bohb is their Chief Brand Officer. Before joining Jones Soda, he spent over 20 years at marketing agencies, including Starcom, and he's won countless awards for clients, including Pringles, Budweiser, and Airbnb–to name just a few. In this conversation, Bohb shares how he's launched new products and brands while reinventing himself along the way, what he's doing to help take Jones into a new category while retaining brand loyalty, and the unique opportunities that bigger brands have right now to enter this industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why Jones Soda decided to expand into the cannabis beverage and edibles spaces. The two things that have so many people excited about the cannabis beverage space right now. What Mary Jones Cannabis is doing to build a new, savvy, and age-appropriate community around the brand. We tackle everything from innovation, supply chain, and women leadership – to interesting facts about the trends/companies in the food and beverage world. Welcome listeners both new and old to another fantastical movie review by your loud mouth buddies Mike Talent and Matt Hinshaw.  Today the dismal dynamic duo discuss a sequel 10 years in the making Zombieland: Double Tap.  Not zombie related topics include Jones Soda, Mike’s criminal history, and double features. Zombieland: Double Tap is a fun sequel to a groundbreaking horror comedy that took way too long to come out.  It’s amazing they were able to get the main cast members to reprise their roles after such a long period of time.  Especially since most of them have moved on to bigger and better films winning all kinds of awards to boot! Zomibeland: Double Tap does nothing new to add to the zombie genre or Zombieland world and that is ok.  We get a handful of new characters and places with some of the same old tropes of the previous film.  There are some really fun scenes and really annoying characters that make this just a fun film to enjoy with friends and family.  Is it going to win any awards and jump start a whole new zombie craze, nope but it was a great time with a great story and great actors what more do you want out of a zombie film?  Mysterious Mike Talent loved Zombieland: Double Tap giving it an amazing score with 4 out of 5 Reels.  Matt also really enjoyed the film but thought it did nothing new.  There were a lot of fun scenes, great acting, and immersive sets but he felt that the movie could have gone farther.  He gives it a 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Thursday Harvest Horror fest starts winding down as we review slapstick horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space.  Can you believe self proclaimed horror fanatic Mike Talent has never seen it?  Neither can we! Affiliate marketing is a constant hot topic within the influencer community: people wondering about the best way to start, or those who have already started and are wondering how to do it effectively. Keep an eye on the responses, and you'll nearly always see someone mention how they tried affiliate marketing with Amazon Associates or Commission Junction back in the day, and didn't find it worth their while. That kind of negative thinking stops here. This week on the podcast, we're talking all about affiliate marketing: how to do it well, how to do it effectively, how to do it so that it maximizes the amount of money that you make. First and foremost, it should be a fit for the content you're creating. -Angel Djambazov To give us some guidance on ways content creators can best monetize, we're joined by Angel Djambazov. Angel has spent his professional career in the fields of journalism (as an editor on several newspapers and as founding Editor-in-Chief of Wyoming Homes and Living Magazine) and digital marketing. He launched Custom Tailored Marketing, becoming the agency of record for Jones Soda and KEEN, and was on the founding team and served as the CMO for the startup PopShops.com (later acquired by Rakuten LinkShare). In 2016 Custom Tailored Marketing merged with GTO Management to become Lab6 Media, an agency primarily focused on maintaining  elite level Affiliate Marketing and Influencer Marketing management, while expanding core Search Engine Marketing, Social Media Marketing, and Mobile App Marketing services. Listen in as Angel discusses: where to start with affiliate marketing the research you should do before joining an affiliate program affiliate posts and brand messaging posts, and how the messaging differs one way you might be missing out on potential affiliate revenue what makes an influencer attractive to brands (it's not all about the numbers) tips for better conversion from your content points of negotiation to consider what you can do to help encourage brand contact and followup Angel shares a ton of eye-opening info in a short amount of time, but we are sure some questions remain! FTC Regulations - a whole lot of buzz out nothing? Is it to target the late night advertisers that promise results with no accountability? Is it punishing everyone for the sake of a few? Will it raise the reputation of the blogosphere? Are these regulations targeted at bloggers that aren't accustomed to traditional print regulations?Macworld and PC World don't disclose the sources? Were the products paid for out of pocket or provided by the manufacturer? Dave reviews products that he's paid for harder than those provided for review. Doyle recounts his days at Maxtor where they expected the review units back due to publication policy, but wished they hadn't had to deal with the returns. They end up losing money on the units. In Australia, several review units were shipped with no expectation of return.Ultimately these regulations will have no affect. Though the precedent in cases is that they'll go after the larger fish, first.Windows 7. Launch parties around? Microsoft is sending kits with the Ultimate version included. It's better than Windows Vista, and XP. Wait to make a purchase until it ships natively. This is a plumbing update to XP though Vista. Max OS X Snow Leopard is a plumbing update too, with little visible on the desktop. No PowerPC support in Snow Leopard. Did Leo Laporte call it a service pack? Snow Leopard has some small compatibility issues, nothing major. Dave had to install it twice. We've all left Microsoft Office for Apple's iWork suite. Dave is having trouble adjusting from Entourage. Windows 7 has no email client - get Windows Live to get the missing software (email, anti-virus, etc.). Microsoft Antivirus has spawned a new free antivirus industry. Windows XP SP 2 turned on the firewall by default, ending many type of infections. None of use run anti-virus on our Macs. Time Capsule/Machine is the great undoer.Google Wave. Flying blind. If your community isn't invited, it makes less sense. What is Google Wave. Is it profound? Scoble says it's a non event. Other say it's the best. Collaboration on a document - wiki with live comments? Interesting on an enterprise level? Doyle is afraid of the preview typing - afraid we'll see what he's really thinking. No one wants to. :)Encapsulating conversation is interesting to Dave. Concerned that everyone would have to live in the Google universe. It's brand new, will other software integrate with the APIs? Chicken egg problem? It just opened to 100,000 people. Bottom line? Jury is still out.Blogworld: Dave and Doyle are going, and are running a workshop. People will put you on Twitter or Linked in - they want to focus on what the C suite needs to know to get there and make it useful. Dave thinks BW is terrific, and can't wait to go. Michael isn't going, but his Twitter stream is. Doyle liked hanging with the leaders in the industry. Dave took his own Jones soda bottles last year (provided by Jones Soda, full disclosure :). Doyle drops an S bomb. If you're thinking about going, go, best show in 2008. Dave wasn't impressed with SXSW - he's old. Doyle and Michael haven' been. Dave's favorite show is CES and thinks you should still go to experience the back halls (which is hidden from most people.) They focus on the least expensive items, not the coolest, but the most innovative. We all watched the streams to find out what was going on. There's also the social side, the after parties and clubs. Apple is rumored to be attending.Show called at 25 minutes. Thanks for joining us! Thanks to the B-Side Lounge in Boulder, CO.
