The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on Thursday announced a new plan for operating the Central Valley Project, a vast system of pumps, dams, and canals that direct water southward from the state’s wetter north. It follows an executive order President Donald Trump signed in January calling for more water to flow to farmers, arguing the state was wasting the precious resource in the name of protecting endangered fish species. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said the plan will help the federal government “strengthen California’s water resilience.” It takes effect Friday. But California officials and environmental groups blasted the move, saying sending significantly more water to farmlands could threaten water delivery to the rest of the state and would harm salmon and other fish. Most of the state’s water is in the north, but most of its people are in the south. Representative Nick Begich (AK-At Large) introduced House Joint Resolution 131, stripping Biden-era restrictions on oil and gas exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Rep. Begich’s resolution has passed the House of Representatives and the Senate and is headed to President Trump’s desk for signature. Alaska's congressional delegation on Thursday succeeded in stripping Biden-era protections from the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, moving to expand opportunities for drilling there. The U.S. Senate voted to eliminate the 2024 leasing program for the refuge that put much of the refuge's 1.6-million-acre coastal plain off-limits to potential drilling. The vote does a lot more than just open the door for potential oil and gas activity. This is another step in unlocking America’s treasure chest. The areas in question in ANWR are estimated to hold 7.7 billion barrels of oil recoverable with current technology, and the U.S. Geological Survey has estimated that there may be hundreds of millions of barrels in other areas to the west of the ANWR sites. All efforts to control traditional and social media are efforts to control information. The specifics of the reasoning for the fine are typically European. During his appearance on Friday on the Sirius XM The Megyn Kelly Show podcast, Kelly started out by asking Patel if they believe they have the “proper suspect in custody” — if Tyler Robinson is “in fact, the man who killed Kirk.” Patel didn’t hesitate in the slightest and answered, “Yes.” The host then brought up one of the wild accusations that have been made by Owens, which includes claiming that Kirk’s own friends and his organization allegedly knew and approved of his murder. Insane. “Do you have any credible reason to believe that anyone connected with the Turning Point organization had anything to do with Charlie’s death?” Kelly asked. Patel’s response: “Zero.” He was then pressed about other claims that Owens has made about the alleged involvement of foreign governments in Kirk’s assassination, like French paratroopers, Egyptian Air Force planes flying out of Provo, Utah, and “potential underground assassins traveling through unseen tunnels,” as the producer of The Charlie Kirk Show, Blake Neff, previously explained. “At this time, the FBI doesn’t have credible information to connect any foreign governments to it,” Patel said. The FBI director made it clear that the investigation is continuing and they are looking into everything, no matter how small. “We are not done just because we arrest someone, just like in the pipe bomber case,” Patel said. “We don’t just say, Okay, we’re done, on to the next. The investigative team continues to work with the Utah authorities, and they’re deriving their own leads and coming back to us saying, ‘Hey, can you look at this piece of information? Can we get a search warrant on this account? Bondi's order is part of a broader counterterrorism plan after President Donald Trump's directives targeting the Antifa movement and organized political violence, Reuters and Bloomberg Law reported, citing a Thursday memo from Bondi. The FBI must provide within 30 days a list of groups “engaged in acts that may constitute domestic terrorism” along with strategies to disrupt them, with an emphasis on left-wing extremists, the memo reportedly says. Bondi's memo directs law enforcement agencies to unearth whatever intelligence files they have on Antifa groups for investigators and to investigate unsolved domestic terrorism incidents over the past five years, Reuters and Bloomberg Law reported. The incidents may include the “doxxing” of law enforcement officers' personal information and threats against Supreme Court justices. The FBI must also streamline its tip line to allow members of the public to “send media” on suspected domestic terrorism, the memo says, according to Reuters. Source: dailycaller.com https://twitter.com/Geiger_Capital/status/1996984378983915761?s=20 With the New U.S. National Security Strategy, Trump Revives Monroe Doctrine Trump administration released the 2025 National Security Strategy (NSS). The intent seems to be a return to the Monroe Doctrine by increasing the United States military presence in the Western Hemisphere, taking on the drug cartels, enhancing border security, making trade deals that are better for the United States, and enhancing American energy production. That’s not the worst high-level take on the NSS, but a look at the actual document is illustrative. The NSS states as its purpose: To ensure that America remains the world's strongest, richest, most powerful, and most successful country for decades to come, our country needs a coherent, focused strategy for how we interact with the world. And to get that right, all Americans need to know what, exactly, it is we are trying to do and why. A “strategy” is a concrete, realistic plan that explains the essential connection between ends and means: it begins from an accurate assessment of what is desired and what tools are available, or can realistically be created, to achieve the desired outcomes. A strategy must evaluate, sort, and prioritize. Not every country, region, issue, or cause—however worthy—can be the focus of American strategy. The purpose of foreign policy is the protection of core national interests; that is the sole focus of this strategy. One of the more interesting (but not surprising) pieces of this NSS is the overt and robust return to the Monroe Doctrine, an early 19th-century policy intended to restrict further European colonization of the Western Hemisphere and to ensure American dominance in that region. The modern take on this doctrine by the Trump administration uses American power by employing both internal and external security measures. The NSS states: American policy should focus on enlisting regional champions that can help create tolerable stability in the region, even beyond those partners' borders. These nations would help us stop illegal and destabilizing migration, neutralize cartels, nearshore manufacturing, and develop local private economies, among other things. We will reward and encourage the region's governments, political parties, and movements broadly aligned with our principles and strategy. But we must not overlook governments with different outlooks with whom we nonetheless share interests and who want to work with us. Source: redstate.com The Monroe Doctrine is a foundational principle of United States foreign policy, first articulated by President James Monroe in his annual message to Congress on December 2, 1823. It declared that the Western Hemisphere was no longer open to European colonization or interference, while affirming that the U.S. would not meddle in existing European colonies or internal affairs. Essentially, it warned European powers—particularly those in the Holy Alliance (Russia, Austria, and Prussia)—against attempting to extend their influence or establish new colonies in the Americas, positioning the U.S. as a protector of independent nations in the region The doctrine emerged amid concerns over European monarchies potentially aiding Spain in reconquering its former Latin American colonies, which had recently gained independence. It was largely drafted by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and reflected growing American confidence following the War of 1812. At the time, the U.S. lacked the military power to enforce it fully, so it relied on British naval support, as Britain also opposed European rivals in the Americas for trade reasons.Key excerpts from Monroe’s address include: The American continents “are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.” Any attempt by Europe to extend its political system to the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as “dangerous to our peace and safety.” Significance and EvolutionInitially more symbolic than enforceable, the Monroe Doctrine evolved into a justification for U.S. intervention in Latin America during the 19th and 20th centuries. For instance: In the mid-1800s, it intertwined with Manifest Destiny to support U.S. territorial expansion, such as during the Mexican-American War. President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1904 “Corollary” expanded it to allow U.S. intervention in Latin American countries to prevent European involvement, leading to actions like the occupation of Cuba and the Dominican Republic. It influenced Cold War policies, framing U.S. opposition to communism in the hemisphere as a defense against external threats. Critics, especially in Latin America, have viewed it as a tool for U.S. imperialism, enabling dominance over sovereign nations. Though less invoked today, it remains a symbol of U.S. hemispheric influence and anti-colonial rhetoric. facebook.com https://twitter.com/onechancefreedm/status/1996970776373735933?s=20 https://twitter.com/JoeLang51440671/status/1996992569746567173?s=20 other hand, I can see how we help real allies with aid when needed, as long as we get something of economic value in return. Republican leadership planned Thursday to kick-off the procedural process to confirm 88 of President Donald Trump's nominees in a bloc vote, but were initially thwarted by Democratic Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, who challenged the package for violating Senate rules. When Republicans refiled the package later on Thursday, the conference included an additional nine nominees, bringing the total to nearly 100. The Senate has confirmed 314 civilian nominees as of Thursday evening, according to a tally by the Senate Republican Communications Center. The 97-member bloc would bring the Senate to more than 410 civilian confirmations in the first year of Trump's second term. “That far outstrips total confirmations by this point in President Biden's term, and in President Trump's first term as well,” Thune said Thursday. Thune also said that Senate Republicans have virtually cleared the nominations backlog. Before Republicans changed Senate precedent to allow for certain nominees to be confirmed in groups, more than 150 of the president's picks were awaiting floor consideration. The Senate approved a 48-member nominations package in September and an additional 108 of the president's picks in a single group vote in October. Projects aren't remembered for how they started—they're remembered for how they ended. In this PM Happy Hour episode, Kim Essendrup and Kate Anderson unpack why finishing strong is critical to your reputation and your project's legacy. Drawing on real project stories, they explore the axiom that people will remember your project the way it ended—and two key corollaries every project manager needs to know: Corollary 1: People naturally forget past wins and focus on the most recent problems. Corollary 2: People will redefine success to fit the outcome—if it gives them a win. You'll learn practical practices to keep your stakeholders focused on value, even when things get bumpy, including: How to keep your team and sponsors aligned on the value proposition Why PMI has redefined project success around value delivered (not just the triple constraints) How to reframe challenges as wins without whitewashing reality Why a strong finish can redeem a rocky project—and a weak finish can ruin a good one If you've ever had a project limp across the finish line, this episode will give you tools to finish strong and leave stakeholders with the story you want them to remember. This interview is with Dan Diephouse and Jeanne Feldkamp of Corollary Wines. We last spoke with Dan and Jeanne during the summer of 2020 after they had just released their brand, Corollary. In this interview, they briefly recap how they got into wine and started the brand, then they talk about what they have been up to since 2020.After initially releasing their wines into the world, they focused on building a wine club starting with family and friends. They also showcased their wines at Winter's Hill, which doubles as their production space, and focused on educating guests about the importance of sparkling wine in the Willamette Valley. The biggest change since our first interview was the purchase of the new vineyard site in Amity, recommended to them by Jessica Cortell. Originally a logging site, they bought it in 2022 and started prepping it for planting. They speak about the need for both a vineyard and a tasting room on the property, as well as the permaculture and sustainability initiatives they have been working towards.Looking ahead to the end of July, they speak about their work in helping to start Method Oregon, an event focusing on Willamette Valley traditional method sparkling wines. They collaborated with Andy Lytle to create the event and Jim Bernau to host the event. They stress the significance of having both an educational component as well as the more traditional grand tasting, showcasing 22 producers and helping participants to view the Willamette Valley as a premier destination for sparkling wines. This interview was conducted by Rich Schmidt at Corollary Wines in Amity on July 7, 2025.

In this episode of All Things Endurance, host Rick Prince chats with triathlete and serial entrepreneur, Ryan Frankel. A former investor at Goldman Sachs, Ryan has founded multiple companies, and appeared on the hit show, Shark Tank. Rick and Ryan discuss assessing risk, start up financing and mistakes to avoid, among other topics. About Ryan Frankel Ryan Frankel is a serial entrepreneur, triathlete and former investor at Goldman Sachs. Ryan has founded multiple companies, and appeared on the hit show, Shark Tank. Ryan recently launched his latest start up, Workup (workuphq.com), which aggregates quality and ethical wellness/health companies in an online marketplace format. Areas covered in this podcast: 1. Could you tell the listeners a bit about yourself and how you came to be an entrepreneur?2. Goldman, and perhaps most of the finance industry is known for long hours, high intensity and a collaborative work environment. How did your time at Goldman influence and shape your entrepreneurial journey?3. Corollary to the prior question, how has your time as a triathlete influenced your experience as an entrepreneur?4. Let's talk risk. Start-ups and small business in general are often perceived as being very risky as compared to working for someone else. That said, I've had many friends that have lost their ‘9-5' jobs in the last few years. So do you think in today's current economic and work climate, is being self-employed any riskier than working for a company?5. As someone starting a business, what would be advice for them to reduce the risk commonly associated with a start up?6. Most coaches are not going to be looking for investors or external capital to start their coaching businesses. Aside from what funds a coach already has in the bank, what are some other creative ways that a coach could raise money to bootstrap their start-up coaching practice?7. In your time as both working for GS, as well as an entrepreneur, what are some of the most valuable lessons that you have learned that would apply to coaches looking to start and/or scale their business?8. What are some of the mistakes that you've made that you could share with our listeners with respect to things to be aware of and potentially avoid?Lastly, what was it like being on Shark Tank?

Last week, the tech world was buzzing with Apple's developers' conference, WWDC, and while innovation was at its peak, another tale of transformation was unfolding amidst the picturesque landscapes of Oregon's Willamette Valley. It's a story of Dan and Jeanne, a duo whose lives were deeply entrenched in tech in the bustling city of San Francisco. They set forth on a journey that took them from sipping whiskey in the city to crafting sparkling wines in the tranquil vineyards of Oregon.Jeanne, finally free from the tech world, embarked on this new adventure with an exuberant spirit. She found solace in the world of winemaking, a stark contrast to the fast-paced tech environment she'd known for years. Dan, the mastermind behind various tech projects, also had a role in this sparkling transformation, driven by a passion for wine and a dash of AI tech. But here's the intriguing part: how did two tech enthusiasts, once sipping whiskey in San Francisco, find themselves in Oregon crafting exceptional sparkling wines? Jeanne jokingly admits that transitioning from enjoying bubbles to making them was a slippery slope. Their journey began with a curiosity for experimenting with apples, initially deemed a "nutty" idea until they realized that those apples needed time to soften, just like grapes. This humble apple experiment marked the inception of their sparkling journey. From experimenting with apples, the transition to grapes was a natural step. However, it wasn't as simple as picking up a phone and ordering grapes. No one was willing to sell grapes to newcomers without a winemaking background. But Jeanne and Dan didn't let these obstacles deter them.Their quest for the perfect vineyard led them to the lush, elevated landscapes of Oregon. Sparkling wines require late-ripening grapes, and the unique microclimates and soil types they found in Oregon matched their sparkling aspirations.Jessica Cortell, a steward of the land and renowned in the wine world, introduced them to vineyards. And so, their journey to create outstanding Oregon sparkling wines began. It was a journey marked by a shared passion for learning and a penchant for experimentation, especially with the remarkable 828 clone of Pinot noir, also known as the "Viagra clone" due to its unique growth pattern. This tech-savvy couple found their calling in the world of sparkling wines. They followed a path of unorthodox experimentation, including carbonic maceration, where the grapes are fermented before being crushed. Their 2017 Montazi Rosé is a testament to this technique, resulting in a unique and flavorful wine.Even the name "Corollary" reflects their mathematical background, with an equal-angular triangle as their logo. The story of Corollary Wines is one of experimentation, transformation, and the artistry of crafting outstanding sparkling wines.
43: Women are more pliable in the company of COMPETING WOMEN. 44: In the quest for romance, BOLDNESS OVERCOMES a lot of personal flaws. Timidity swamps a lot of personal virtues. 45: Betas pay, alphas split, SUPER ALPHAS PROFIT. 46: A woman with inflated self-esteem is a woman who will erroneously believe she is too good to date men normally in her league, unless steps are taken to bring her self-esteem back in line with reality. Corollary: A dating market lopsided with unrealistically high self-esteem women will shrink the pool of men available to date and marry, with the consequence that women remain single longer than they would otherwise. Corollary to the corollary: The most effective measure society can undertake to increase the incidence of marriage and the quality of married life is to STOP ARTIFICIALLY PROPPING UP WOMEN'S SELF-ESTEEM. 47: You have to make marriage an ATTRACTIVE ALTERNATIVE FOR MEN — not women — if you want the institution to thrive.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 23, 2023 is: corollary KOR-uh-lair-ee noun Corollary is a formal word that usually refers to something that naturally follows or results from another thing. It can also be applied to a thing that incidentally or naturally accompanies or parallels something else. In logic, it refers to a proposition inferred immediately from a proved proposition. // Two corollaries of investment in parks and other green spaces are cleaner air and lower temperatures in neighboring communities. See the entry > Examples: “Our right to speak, much less to parent, should not be contingent on our ability to gain political control. The much better course for our democracy is to uphold a legal corollary to the golden rule: Defend the rights of others that you would like to exercise yourself. It doesn't end the culture war. We'll still clash over contentious issues. But maintaining a bedrock defense of civil liberties lowers the stakes.” —David French, The New York Times, 12 Mar. 2023 Did you know? Not ones to rest on our laurels here in the Word of the Day hothouse, today we are pleased to offer some flowery prose on the history of the word corollary—not because it is rhetorically elegant (though it may be) but because its history is related to flowers. Indeed, the seed of corollary was planted initially by the Latin noun corōlla meaning “small wreath of flowers,” which later bloomed into another Latin noun, corōllārium, referring to a garland given as a reward as well as to a gratuity or an unsolicited payment. Just as one tips their server at the conclusion of a meal, you might think of a modern-day corollary as something that naturally follows or accompanies something else in natural course. The formality of corollary is thanks to its formal roots: the word first figured in logical proofs as a term for a proposition that can be inferred immediately from something that's just been proved—the corollary follows logically as a result of the statement before it.
As we head toward the decision time of the trade deadline, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, ask the musical question, “Is there anything at any level that the White Sox do well, or at least adequately?” (Spoiler alert: We didn't include groundscrew, batboys or ballgirls in the evaluation, so you may already know the answer.) Then there's the follow-up musical question, “Is there anybody the White Sox shouldn't try to trade at the deadline?” (Spoiler alert: See spoiler alert above.) (Corollary, which we neglected to discuss: Is it possible to hire James Click as a consultant with veto power for the trading period, so decisions aren't left up to the three stooges?) Then there's, “Is there any statistic that shows the White Sox as a team are even average, or close to it?” (Spoiler alert: This is meant as a joke. You definitely know the answer.) But then we get to the real issue that will confront a few AL teams in September — if you know you have a Wild Card spot, how far should you go to make sure you lose enough to be the sixth seed and get to play whatever team slogs through the pathetic AAAL Central so you get a sure first-round victory? Suggestions include have batters hit from the opposite side of the plate, have pitchers throw underhand, and have fielders leave their mitts in the dugout, but you may have better ideas. Not that we're feeling at all down, or anything like that. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Our guest in this episode is the scientist and science fiction author Davin Brin, whose writings have won the Hugo, Locus, Campbell, and Nebula Awards. His style is sometimes called 'hard science fiction'. This means his narratives feature scientific or technological change that is plausible rather than purely magical. The scenarios he creates are thought-provoking as well as entertaining. His writing inspires readers but also challenges them, with important questions not just about the future, but also about the present.Perhaps his most famous non-fiction work is his book "The Transparent Society: Will Technology Force Us to Choose Between Privacy and Freedom?", first published in 1998. With each passing year it seems that the questions and solutions raised in that book are becoming ever more pressing. One aspect of this has been called Brin's Corollary to Moore's Law: Every year, the cameras will get smaller, cheaper, more numerous and more mobile.David also frequently writes online about topics such as space exploration, attempts to contact aliens, homeland security, the influence of science fiction on society and culture, the future of democracy, and much more besides.Topics discussed in this conversation include:*) Reactions to reports of flying saucers*) Why photographs of UFOs remain blurry*) Similarities between reports of UFOs and, in prior times, reports of elves*) Replicating UFO phenomena with cat lasers*) Changes in attitudes by senior members of the US military*) Appraisals of the Mars Rovers*) Pros and cons of additional human visits to the moon*) Why alien probes might be monitoring this solar system from the asteroid belt*) Investigations of "moonlets" in Earth orbit*) Looking for pi in the sky*) Reasons why life might be widespread in the galaxy - but why life intelligent enough to launch spacecraft may be rare*) Varieties of animal intelligence: How special are humans?*) Humans vs. Neanderthals: rounds one and two*) The challenges of writing about a world that includes superintelligence*) Kurzweil-style hybridisation and Mormon theology*) Who should we admire most: lone heroes or citizens?*) Benefits of reciprocal accountability and mutual monitoring (sousveillance)*) Human nature: Delusions, charlatans, and incantations*) The great catechism of science*) Two levels at which the ideas of a transparent society can operate*) "Asimov's Laws of Robotics won't work"*) How AIs might be kept in check by other AIs*) The importance of presenting gedanken experimentsFiction mentioned (written by David Brin unless noted otherwise):The Three-Body Problem (Liu Cixin)ExistenceThe Sentinel (Arthur C. Dr Arnold Eiser, MD, MACP trained as a nephrologist over 40 years ago but has come to see that the kidneys, liver and other 'extracranial factors' (influences from outside the cranium, the skull holding the brain) hold some of the most impactful sway over the health of our brains. He's termed this relationship between organ dysfunction in the body to assumed compromise in central nervous system brain neuroinflammation Eiser's Corollary of Related Toxicity. His book, Preserving Brain Health in a Toxic Age: New insights from neuroscience, integrative medicine and public health (Rowman & Littlefield, Oct 2021) explores this topic in depth. He examines the ways in which environmental policy, corporate pollutive behavior, metals, microbes, common medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol), and experiences with digital violence seem to hasten neuroinflammatory changes that can present as our current epidemics of autism and Alzheimer's Disease. It's a multi-tiered attack on the nervous system that our society doesn't loop back to true root causes. The book explores the interface between the chemical environment and industrial and agricultural practices.. He notes almost all neurotoxins are also carcinogenics and recognizes the key role of the liver as a front-line organ for protection or vulnerability for brain inflammation- and then notes the epidemic of non-alcoholic fatty acid disease in the modern world. He notes that CFS/ dysautonomia was originally described in the 1800's as a 'disease of modernity' associated with newspaper printing and rail travel. We then talk about the integrative medicine, high fructose corn syrup, nutrients, spices, and in the process really listing out many of the ways we can make our whole world medicine better at preserving brain health. No matter what industry you work in or what business you own, there always have to be rules and policies, right? The Dress Code. The Work-From-Home Policy. The 'Don't Talk to Karen from Finance Until She's Had Her Morning Coffee' Corollary. Every business has them and needs them (especially that one about Karen from Finance ... You were an OG, Dave from Accounting, and we hope they recover your body one day, for your family's sake). And, yet, while every organization has rules and regulations, in a similarly universal fashion, they're also almost always completely hated by the people who work there, who cite issues with rules about daily number of bathroom visits, why fish can't be heated in the communal microwave and why they can't wear their Snuggies to work (If you really want to get around a dress code - here's a pro tip: do what the Hawaiian Fashion Guild did in the 1960s and bribe your state legislators with free Aloha Shirts and then accidentally create the concept of Casual Fridays. Seriously - this was a thing. Look it up.) While some folks may grumble or grouse at the rules, policies, procedures and guidelines, the common thread in all of it is accountability, which our boys Sid and Keith will be advising us on in this week's episode. By codifying and creating concrete rules and regulations in our businesses, we set standards for behavior, output, consistency, et cetera, that are vital for maintaining a successful and accountable workplace.Setting rules and regulations isn't about being the bad guy - it's giving your employees the tools and tricks they need to take themselves and your business to the top. So, this week's episode is chock full of useful tidbits to help you survive and thrive, so turn it on, tune in and take notes - this week's Overlap Podcast is a terrific time.
