Tell us what you think of this episodeOssie begins by talking about his experiences as Chairman of Glamorgan CCC and the difficulties cricket and Glamorgan faced in the late 1970s and early 1980s.We move swiftly talking about the Kerry Packer Circus and it's impact on the game. Ossie mentions the Tony Grieg affair which arose out of this and then talks about the Gatting affair in 1988 when England captain Mike Gatting was caught on camera pointing his finger at Pakistani umpire Shakoor Rana. For more on that you can go herehttps://www.wisden.com/cricket-news/the-gatting-rana-fall-out-when-a-whole-day-of-test-cricket-was-lost-to-a-player-umpire-argumentWe then move to talking about the idea of a UK Board of Cricket. By the way Ossie gives us a little bit of history about the role of the MCC. Ossie tells the story of the England AND WALES Cricket Board and how it came to be called that and the implications of that for the development of the first class game and it's various academies and pathway organisations. After finishing his work as an administrator with the first class game, Ossie talks about his involved with the founding and development of what was called the Cricket Foundation but what became the Chance to Shine Charity. In particular, we hear the story of how the ex Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, got involved and managed to get a huge investment form the government of the day to take cricket into primary schools. We talk about Ossie's involvement with the Sports Council of Wales and he talks at length about Tom Cartwright's involvement as a coach in welsh cricket.Ossie reflects on the game today with particularly interesting comments about the County Championship and Test cricket, including ‘Baz Ball'. We end with Ossie's thoughts on welsh cricket and the need to produce some more of our homegrown talent.
My guest today is dear friend and an ex-colleague, Derrick Mc Court. Derrick and I first met in 2001 when he joined Microsoft in Ireland. Our paths crossed many times and in many ways over the years and it has always been a pleasure to spend time with him. Today he is General Manager of the Customer Success Unit in Microsoft UK and sits on the UK Board. A quick look at his LinkedIn Profile will show the considerable skills he has but for me the most significant thing is that in amongst all the corporate madness he has managed to remain impressively grounded and that comes across in our chat. Derrick has three passions which are key to him keeping his feet on the ground the first of which is his family. He was born in 1969 and grew up in Belfast during ‘The Troubles' which he reflects on in a typically thoughtful and moving way. For the past 15 years home has been in Edinburgh where he lives with his wife and their two boys Conner and Joe. His eldest boy Jamie got married last week and his daughter Lucy lives in London and works in I.T. The second passion, as you will hear is music and at festivals like Download that is shared with Connor and Joe. His final passion is running, and he is well on the way to completing the ‘Big 6' Marathons and getting his ‘Six Star Finisher Medal'. Music and Playlists are clearly an important part of his running regime hence the title of the episode. Derrick's song selections are: 70's I've Got A Feeling The Beatles80's Alive And Kicking Simple Minds90's Paranoid Android Radiohead00's I Predict A Riot Kaiser Chiefs10's X-Ray Visons Clutch20's Mr. Motivator Idles Enjoy

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Patrick Gruban has joined the EV UK board, published by Rob Gledhill on April 3, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I'm happy to announce that Patrick Gruban has recently joined the board of Effective Ventures Foundation (UK). This update follows our previous announcement about other changes to the EV UK and EV US boards, and it is our hope that Patrick will be the last new trustee to join before all projects fiscally sponsored by EV are offboarded into independent entities. Patrick is currently the co-Director of EA Germany, where he leads the national group for the third largest[1] EA community. In addition to his current role, he brings a wealth of experience and operational knowledge from his career as a serial entrepreneur, which stretches back to the mid-1990s. In Patrick's words, "I'm excited to support the EA ecosystem's evolution through projects spinning off from EV. Nine years ago, I was inspired by EA ideas. Since 2020, I have been an active member and organizer of my local group and, since 2023, of the national EA community in Germany. I see my mission as using my experience as an entrepreneur to support the EA community to help people have more impact. Having expressed critiques of the EV and other EA boards last year, I'm particularly enthusiastic about this opportunity to make a difference." The EV UK trustees and I are excited for Patrick to be joining the board, and especially to be able to benefit from his previous experience in other leadership roles. We believe that his background will be of particular value to us during this last phase of EV. Other EV UK and EV US trustee updates To follow up on some of our previously announced changes, I also wanted to confirm that Tasha McCauley and Claire Zabel have stepped down from the EV UK board. Nicole Ross is also intending on stepping down from the EV US board shortly, and Eli Rose will complete his transition from the EV US board to the EV UK board in the near future. Finally, we had originally intended for Johnstuart Winchell to serve as an EV UK trustee, but he's instead switched over to serving on our EV US board. ^ Germany has remained the third largest country for respondents in the EA yearly survey (after the United States and the United Kingdom) as of 2022. Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with Australian journalist and former prime minister, the Honourable Tony Abbott. They discuss Australia's role on the world stage, the problems facing their economy and culture, how the quasi-cult of carbon threatens the developing world, why new religions propagate where faith has been abdicated, and the looming threat of war as China destabilizes while Putin pushes forward against Ukraine. Tony Abbott was elected prime minister by the Australian people on September 7, 2013, and served for two years. In that time, the carbon tax and mining tax were repealed, free trade agreements were finalized with China, Japan and Korea; the people smuggling trade from Indonesia to Australia were halted, and Australia became the second largest military contributor to the US-led campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq. Currently, he is a director of the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation, serves on the council of the Australian War Memorial, and is an adviser to the UK Board of Trade. He's patron to several charities, including Soldier On, the International Sports Promotion Society, and Worldwide Support for Development. - Links - For The Honourable Tony Abbott Website https://tonyabbott.com.au/ On X https://twitter.com/hontonyabbott?lang=en

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Lincoln Quirk has joined the EV UK board, published by Howie Lempel on June 2, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I'm excited to share that Lincoln Quirk has joined the board of Effective Ventures Foundation (UK). This follows the addition of Zach Robinson and Eli Rose to the EV US board about two months ago. Lincoln is a co-founder and Head of Product at Wave, a technology company that aims to make finance more accessible in Africa through digital infrastructure. Wave spun off from SendWave, a remittance platform which Lincoln also cofounded and which was acquired in 2021. He has maintained a deep interest in effective altruism and been a part of the EA community for over a decade. In his own words, "I'm excited to join the EV UK board. I've been trying to help the world and have called myself part of the EA community for 10+ years; EV is playing one of the most important roles in this community and correspondingly holds a lot of responsibility. I'm looking forward to helping figure out the best ways EV can contribute to making the world a better place through enabling EA community and EA projects.” The EV UK trustees and I are excited to have Lincoln join and look forward to working with him. Lincoln impressed us during the interview process with his strategic insight and dedication to the role. I also think his experience founding and growing Wave and Sendwave will be a particularly useful perspective to add to the board. We are continuing to look for candidates to add to the boards of both EV UK and EV US, especially candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and who have experience in accounting, law, finance, risk management or other management at large organizations. We recruited Lincoln via directly reaching out to him, and plan to continue to source candidates this way and via our open call. If you are interested or know of a great candidate, the linked forum post includes instructions for applying or nominating someone. Applications and nominations will be accepted until June 4th. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EV UK board statement on Owen's resignation, published by EV UK Board on February 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In a recent TIME Magazine article, a claim of misconduct was made about an “influential figure in EA”: A third [woman] described an unsettling experience with an influential figure in EA whose role included picking out promising students and funneling them towards highly coveted jobs. After that leader arranged for her to be flown to the U.K. for a job interview, she recalls being surprised to discover that she was expected to stay in his home, not a hotel. When she arrived, she says, “he told me he needed to masturbate before seeing me.” Shortly after the article came out, Julia Wise (CEA's community liaison) informed the EV UK board that this concerned behaviour of Owen Cotton-Barratt; the incident occurred more than 5 years ago and was reported to her in 2021. (Owen became a board member in 2020.) Following this, on February 11th, Owen voluntarily resigned from the board. This included stepping down from his role with Wytham Abbey; he is also no longer helping organise The Summit on Existential Security. Though Owen's account of the incident differs in scope and emphasis from the version expressed in the TIME article, he still believes that he made significant mistakes, and also notes that there have been other cases where he regretted his behaviour. It's very important to us that EV and the wider EA community strive to provide safe and respectful environments, and that we have reliable mechanisms for investigating and addressing claims of misconduct in the EA community. So, in order to better understand what happened, we are commissioning an external investigation by an independent law firm into Owen's behaviour and the Community Health team's response. This post is jointly from the Board of EV UK: Claire Zabel, Nick Beckstead, Tasha McCauley and Will MacAskill. The disclosure occurred as follows: shortly after the article came out, Owen and Julia agreed that Julia would work out whether Owen's identity should be disclosed to other people in EV UK and EV US; Julia determined that it should be shared with the boards. Julia writes about her response at the time here. See comment here from Chana Messinger on behalf of the Community Health team. Thanks for listening. It's without a doubt that speech is one of the most lethal tools any person can possess. People like Tony Robbins and Oprah Winfrey weren't hailed as two of the best communicators just because they had the gift of gab! And so, for today's guest, we have one of the most high profile people we've ever had on the show since episode 1. The Former Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, joins me today to share his insights on the parallels between politics, psychology, and—ultimately—sales. We talked about how he dealt with an international crisis as the Ex-Prime Minister of Australia, how to engage in diplomatic talks with world leaders, what persuasion tactics he had employed back in the day, and so much more. This week on GeoPod, Tenjin Consulting's Alexander Downer and Georgina Downer talk about the UK Government's decision to appoint former Australian PM Tony Abbott to the UK Board of Trade and what this means for the UK's post-Brexit trade agenda. We discuss the growing prospects of a no-deal Brexit, with negotiations on state aid and fishing rights at a stalemate and the time remaining to secure a deal fast running out. We ask whether the US presidential debates starting on the 29th September will give Donald Trump the boost he needs to secure his re-election on November 3? We analyse the impact of the recent visits by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member Yang Jiechi to Europe and question whether this was a charm offensive gone wrong? Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga looks all but certain to become the next Prime Minister of Japan so we discuss what a Suga prime ministership will mean for Australia and the region. Finally, it's only September but 2020 has proved to be Iran's annus horribilus. We talk about what's happened and what this all means for next year's presidential election. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 25, 2018) – (THIS EPISODE IS AN ENCORE EDITION) Drug addiction is rampant in the nation, with estimates of more than 70,000 people dying from drug overdoses in 2017, much of that fueled by opioid abuse. To put it in relatable numbers, the United States suffered more deaths to drug abuse last year than the total number of U.S. soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. Or, put another way, at roughly 200 deaths per day, it’s the equivalent of a jumbo jet going down every 24 hours. The problem has reached epidemic levels in Kentucky, with heroin and fentanyl abuse ravaging communities. On this week’s episode of Behind the Blue, Dr. Sharon Walsh, director of the University of Kentucky’s Center on Drug and Alcohol Research (CDAR) and a distinguished professor in the UK College of Medicine, discusses the challenge Kentucky faces in battling the opioid epidemic. That question – what do we do? – was the basis of a daylong meeting Dr. Walsh had with the UK Board of Trustees. As part of its annual retreat this year, UK President Eli Capilouto and Walsh framed an entire day of discussion and presentations around the opioid epidemic in the country and its specific impact on Kentucky. As importantly, the discussion centered on how UK – along with partners at the state and federal levels – is positioning itself to stem the tide of drug addiction and abuse in the state and beyond those borders.
