Bruce shares insights from his decades of experience serving on over 21 nonprofit and professional boards, including Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan and CAA Saskatchewan. He discusses how his diverse background in academia, consulting, and executive leadership informs his governance contributions. Bruce highlights the unique challenges of nonprofit governance, including balancing mission-driven goals with financial sustainability. He explains the diverse structures and financing of nonprofits, ranging from member dues and fundraising to revenue-generating enterprises. Bruce points out the need for boards to adapt their skill sets to address these complexities. He advocates for applying strategic thinking to nonprofit boards, emphasizing the importance of managing resources effectively and aligning marketing strategies. In talking about organizational models, Bruce explains Habitat for Humanity's evolution from the “classic” model, where Habitat itself manages the mortgage, to newer approaches involving partnerships with financial institutions. The discussion delves into broader governance themes, including diversity and effective leadership. Bruce advocates for meaningful diversity on boards to improve decision-making quality and better represent the communities they serve without tokenism. He stresses the balance between servant leadership and strategic guidance. Bruce points to the board chair's responsibility for encouraging inclusive discussions and challenging groupthink to ensure sound decision-making processes and unity. Munir and Bruce's conversation highlights the importance of patience, planning, and clear principles in navigating the complexities of organizational change, offering valuable lessons for others facing similar endeavours.About Bruce Anderson:Bruce Anderson joined the CAA Saskatchewan Board of Directors in October 2017 and serves on the Audit Committee, chairs the Human Resources Committee, and chaired the Investment and Acquisition Task Force. How do we know that we're going to yield some of this result? So if we get a certain number of things donated at the Habitat Restore, for example, which things are going to yield the best profits? Which things have the best margin? Which things have the quickest inventory turn? Because these are terms that people are going as a not for profit. What do you mean inventory turn? If it sits in our warehouse, it sits in the shop there for a period of time. It costs us money. It costs us floor space. It's an opportunity cost because we could put other things that are more profitable in there. So some of these metrics that you would naturally think about have to be used.Munir Haque: [00:00:40] Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Boardroom 180 Podcast. I'm your host, Munir Haque, an executive coach and senior board strategist. I have partnered with Action Edge Executive Development to lead their governance and political acumen division. In each episode, we meet with governance leaders and step into their boardrooms, where decisions shape the world around us. In this episode, we'll be talking nonprofit governance with Mr. Bruce Anderson. Bruce Anderson is a seasoned leader with 15 years in nonprofit leadership and over 25 years as an entrepreneur. He is a managing partner of Be Creative Group, a consultancy specializing in management and marketing, and teaches strategy and entrepreneurship at the University of Regina, where he also leads the Graduate Advanced Training and Entrepreneurship Center, or GATE. Bruce has a BCom as well as an MBA, and is a Chartered Director with the Icd.d designation and a Certified Management Consultant. His achievements include being named as a National Fellow of the Certified Management Consultants, as well as receiving the International Academic Fellow Award for Certified Management Consultants. Bruce has served on over 21 nonprofit, professional and regulatory boards, chairing ten of them, including Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan, which he guided through a merger. Currently, he is a director with CAA Saskatchewan, chairing their HR committee and serving on the audit committee. His past leadership includes chairing the Regina and Saskatchewan Chambers of Commerce and the Saskatchewan Science Center, serving on the Council for Entrepreneurial Growth and Economic Development. A mentor to entrepreneurs and passionate community leader, welcome to The Boardroom 180 Podcast, Mr. Anderson.Bruce Anderson: [00:02:21] Thanks, Munir.Munir Haque: [00:02:23] I always find that a good gauge of how active somebody is in the community is whether or not my kids know them. And for this I've got stories of two of my kids that have crossed paths with you. So my daughter, I think was about five years ago, during some of her onboarding at University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, that onboarding weekend, she went up, and I attended with her and we got to at least watch. I think it was a student entrepreneur competition. And at that competition you were up in Saskatoon and you were one of the judges. So that's one of my kids. And then needless to say, she's not in business anymore. She switched into one of the more social sciences and now is just starting her master's in public health.Bruce Anderson: [00:03:11] I remember those teams well, the kids were great.Munir Haque: [00:03:15] We were just in the audience, but I saw you from the back, and I think I came up to you afterwards. The other thing is, my son is currently finishing off his bachelors of administration at University of Regina. He's taken a handful of courses from you, and he has good things to say about you. So once again, it goes to show how much you do in the community, how well my kids know your name.Bruce Anderson: [00:03:36] Fair enough, yeah.Munir Haque: [00:03:39] 21 boards, that'...

Work-Life Balance Margarette Dorchester If you have a family, I can guarantee that everything is competing for your time and trying to take you away from your family! Think about it. Work, social commitments. Sports. You name it and it is competing for one asset you cannot create more of: TIME. There are only 24 hours in one day. Period. You cannot create an extra three hours to add to your day. The only thing you can do is prioritize your time to “carve out” that extra three hours from your already demanding schedule. If you are running your own business (and especially if you have employees), your time devoted to your business is even more important. Unfortunately, that is what happens. You end up prioritizing your time devoted to your business rather than family – or even yourself! Yes, you must prioritize time for your own self-care. Physical exercise, rest and relaxation. I know I have hard time doing that myself. So I'm here to learn today as well as you. Our guest today is Margarette Dorchester. She has a Master's Degree in Business and is a Certified Management Consultant and leadership coach as well. She helps individuals and business leaders to rebalance their work and personal lives to benefit themselves and their families, all while keeping their businesses running smoothly. How do we do that? Well, we are about to find out! Praise God! Help me welcome to the program, Margarette Dorchester! Margarette, it is so good to finally talk with you. We've had a few detours on our efforts to have this conversation, but Praise God, here we are! First question I always start with is this. Other than that brief in formation I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Margarette Dorchester?” How did you get started in this line of work? I read on your website some testimonials that talk about you helping them with the “Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.” Can you explain what this is and how you help them to compete for the award? What kind of business usually reaches out to you? By that I mean, small businesses or corporations and organizations that are large, small or in between? When you first walk into a business in this capacity, as a consultant, what is it you usually want to see first? Do you do most of your consulting work “on the ground” at the physical location of the business, online or a combination of both? What kind of packages do you offer or are these tailored to the individual and business? Margarette, this has been so interesting. If someone wanted to reach out and ask a question or wanted more information on your consulting services, how can they do that? How can they reach out to you? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes down below. Folks, as we said in the beginning, there are only so many hours in each and every day. How you use them is what matters. But you cannot be focused all on work with no self-care or family time included. You would just burn out and be of no use to anyone, including yourself. I believe the information Margarette Dorchester shared with us today touched someone. I just believe that. I encourage you, drop down into the show notes and reach out to Margarette! Ask your questions. See if this is what you need to get your personal and...

The mind is such a beautiful thing that God has given us to solve life's challenges. I describe it as an immortal machine that has endless scenarios of application when its potential is harnessed adequately by activating its unimaginable possibilities. As powerful as the mind is, it can only respond to those stimuli that excite it to create. Creativity excites the mind, and those who have come to know this secret always dwell within the domain of the mind and engage it to develop innovative ideas and answers and solutions to life's questions and problems. Such individuals don't run away from the troubles; instead, they run towards them as if to say, I have found an opportunity for the mind to work, to be stretched, and come up with ways and perspective which seemingly was not seen even though it existed. On this episode of the Word café, I am privileged to have someone I consider to have a mind of innovation. His name is Dr. Noel Akpata. Dr. Noel Akpata is a seasoned innovation strategy consultant, social innovator, impact investor, and Global Business speaker. After undergoing a massive career transition from Medicine and Surgery driven by purpose, passion, and a need for excellent performance, Dr. Noel Akpata, over the years, has developed a massive interest and harnessed necessary skills in the areas of strategy and execution, social innovation, human resource development, project management, social business sector development and national development making him highly sought after. He is a renowned knowledge expert/speaker at several global meetings, most especially the prestigious Horasis "World Economic Forum For Emerging Markets" events which brings together Chairmen/CEOs of some of the world's leading firms alongside global political leaders, an event described as the new 'DAVOS'. He currently serves as the Africa director for the Horasis World Economic Forum for the Emerging Markets and has created veritable platforms for economic and political integration. He chaired the Nigeria-China-Netherlands Forum at Horasis, which held its first session at the Global China Business Meeting, Hague, Netherlands, in November 2013. Previous executive roles include CEO/President, COO and VP Sales for technology companies from start-ups to $70 million in annual sales. You can find Larry on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/larry-trenwith-cmc-02944/ ABOUT THE EPISODE: The word “scaling” in the context of business is one of those words that gets used a lot, but often isn't really explained or understood. Scaling is used synonymously with growth, which according to Larry Trenwith represents a gross misunderstanding of what scaling is and how to enable an organization to scale in the true meaning of the word. In this episode, Larry walks us through some common misunderstandings about scaling and what it takes for organizations to set themselves up for scaling success and they progress through various revenue milestones. It's a masterclass in the right way to grow from someone who has been there, done that, and helped many others to do so as well.

What separates a good leader from a great leader? It’s not the magical ability to never fail or meticulous planning skills. No, it’s a lot deeper than that. It’s a power you draw on from deep within yourself. This week Scott Ackerman joins the podcast and he shares from his own personal experience what he believes separates the good from the great- faith, hope, and charisma. A truly great leader will show hope and faith in their team, cultivating a confidence that will enable their team to succeed. And while he warns about the dangers of blind hope, Scott also echoes my sentiments about what separates hope from optimism- taking action and continual motivation to reach your goals. Whether you are a leader in a personal or professional setting, tune in to hear Scott’s expertise on hope, confidence, reflection, and strength in leadership. Welcome to our very first episode! We're so excited to invite you to our weird point of view of what business means to us. We've come together to share our joy of business and life and would love everyone to know that no one has to have a money problem. One of our targets, for those who desire it, is to know that Anyone can do Business, even if that's not what you've been taught or told. We both live outside of the norm of what business and creation is. Join us as we explore what business has meant to us, what we've been shown and told as well as offer a different possibility. Our point of view creates our reality. If you can get an awareness of where you are now, what your beliefs and points of view are around business and work, it's the first step to changing it. What if, wherever you are now can change? Use this exercise to gain some insight of where you are now. Get your pen and paper out, or your phone, and write down everything that comes up when you ask yourself these questions: What is Business to me? What do I mean to Business? Who is Business for? What is Work? Lauren Marie is a Joy of Business facilitator, acupuncturist, entrepreneur and mother of twins. Deine Lieblings-Internet-Ressource? Facebook, WhatsApp, Amazon, Youtube. Also vieles rund um Social Media. Es gibt da so viel Praktisches, sowohl beruflich als auch privat zu nutzen. Ich mag das.
