I didn't go to university and there's a bit of a dad joke that I trot out about that now and again. I say that I'm a student of life, in no rush to graduate. So maybe I'm coming at this with a biased view of the world, but I agree with this academic at the University of Canterbury who is saying today that universities have just become factories that pump out people with degrees. And he wants them to become elite institutions again. What's more, he's saying that because universities are so focused on getting people in the door and giving them a qualification, it's meant that there are people at university who shouldn't be. And how does he know that? Or why does he think that? It's because of the number of students at university that, he says, are illiterate. In fact, he reckons it's got so bad that it's reached “a crisis level”. Mike Grimshaw is his name. He's an Associate Professor of Sociology at Canterbury. And, as well as saying today that universities need to get all elite on it again, he's also pointing the finger at the education system. Primary schools, in particular. Which he says are failing to create what he calls a reading and writing culture because they have become more interested in technology than education. This is how he's describing it today. He's saying that schools, and society in general, have “swallowed the technological Kool Aid without actually valuing education.” So that's where his finger is pointing. He says many students "appear to be functionally illiterate - going on the incoherence of their written work. Compulsory writing or critical thinking courses do not seem to help as they can pass these and still regularly submit incoherent work.” So I get what he's saying about the school system failing kids so that, by the time they reach university, their reading and writing isn't what it should be. But I'm also going to point the finger at employers, because the fact that people have to have a university degree just to get a foot in the door at a lot of outfits is something I've been hot on for a long time. I think it's crazy. And it's not just because I didn't go to university, it's not just because I learned how to be a journalist on the job at a local newspaper. It's because a university degree doesn't make someone better suited for a job. If someone's a real nosey type, who won't take “no” for an answer and who isn't scared to knock on someone's door to see if they want to talk, but doesn't have piece of paper from a university, they will be a way better journalist than someone who went to university, got a degree but is too scared to talk to people. I'm sure you can think of jobs or professions where natural inclination or natural skill way outshines the benefit of a university degree. But, for some reason, a lot of employers these days don't want to know you if you haven't got a qualification. When it comes to university, my view is that there should only be two reasons for someone to go. The first is if you absolutely have to because of the career you want - so that's things like law, engineering, medicine. The other reason is if you really want to. And that's probably the key bit here, because, if you really want to go to university, chances are you're not going to be illiterate. Universities these days are full of people who don't really want to be at university but they think they have to if they want to get a job, and they'll be the ones who Mike Grimshaw at UC is talking about today. And that's why employers have to take some of the blame here. Employers who know full well that someone could do the job for them just as well —with or without a university degree— but, for some reason, they're only interested in talking to the people with the degree and the framed photo on the wall. It is one of those life-changing moments that doesn't get a lot of attention. Even the greeting card industry hasn't created an "Empty Nest" category. However you feel about it, when a child moves out, it's a dramatic change and for some it can be a rough time. What happened the day you became an empty nester? How did your relationship with your kids change after they moved out?And then in our second topic, we discuss the value of a university degree. The Bank of Canada looked at data from 2018 gathered by Statistics Canada. It determined that workers in their 40's with a university degree earned about 10 dollars more per hour than those who graduated from college or another post-secondary school. But that gap was larger back in 1997 and the economy has certainly changed since 2018. Joel Westheimer is a professor of democracy and education at the University of Ottawa and has written and talked about the value of a university degree. He's also an education columnist with CBC Ottawa. He answered your questions about whether or not a University degree is still worth it.

Audio Long Reads, from the New Statesman
How the British university degree lost its value

Three years ago the New Statesman published a cover story showing how successive British governments have emaciated standards in UK university degrees, creating a generation of graduates with devalued qualifications, while costing the taxpayer billions. Since then, the “great university con” has continued unabated. Grade inflation has only increased, despite various declarations from ministers that something should be done to counter it. In this deeply researched and wide-ranging article, the New Statesman's senior politics correspondent, Harry Lambert, wrote that the number of Firsts awarded at British universities has quadrupled since 1994. Now, three years on, that number has quintupled. In this Audio Long Reads episode, Lambert argues that the forces driving this disintegration of academic standards remain in place. That is no surprise. The current system is useful for too many of those involved for the sector to agitate for change. But Britain is being sold short by this “university miracle” – of ever more students going into higher education, and more and more of them emerging with higher grades. How did we reach this point? Why has the value of a British university degree become so diminished? This piece offers answers to the questions that successive waves of students and their parents have been asking for years. This article was first published on newstatesman.com on 21 August 2019. You can read the text version here. Written and read by Harry Lambert. Welcome to Episode 985 Stevie Kim moderates Clubhouse's Ambassadors Corner – In this episode Cedric Izri interviews Frank Cornilissen. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? About about today's guest host: Cédric Izri is a French citizen, with roots in Burgundy and Champagne (unfortunately nobody in the family was making wine) . His career path has not been into wine, but in finance. He had multiple positions in multinational companies and traveled a lot across Europe and more. He always had the objective to work in the wine world one day as he has been a long time amateur and passionate about wine. He bought his first premier grand cru of Bordeaux in 1993 (Chateau Haut Brion vintage 1990) with pocket money while being a student (prices were very affordable) and since then, never stopped buying, learning, travelling, tasting and discovering wines from France and abroad. His passion drove Cédric to develop his knowledge and tasting skills through a number of programs. He holds the WSET Diploma, a Sake Sommelier Certification , University Degree on Geo-sensorial tasting (old practice of focusing on physical characteristics and movement of the wine in mouth)and some more. He is a Master of Wine student and since 2022 an Italian Wine Ambassador. Cedric, aside of his regular job, runs a WSET wine school in Luxembourg and a small retail company in France and of course, has thousands of wine related projects in head! If you want to learn more about today's guest host, you can by visiting: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/cedricizriDipWset/ Instagram @chambertin18_wine LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cedric-izri-dipwset-a91ba92/ Website https://lwsa.lu About today's guest producer: Frank Cornilissen was born and grew up in Belgium. Before moving to Sicily and establishing his estate in 2001, Frank used to work as an international wine merchant, in particular focusing in Bourgogne and Bordeaux. I have read somewhere that some of the first wines he bought were a mix of 1972 Domaine de la Romanée Conti bottles. If this is true, it tells something, isn't it? Since Frank acquired his first bunch of ungrafted vines, he has expanded up to around 24 Ha today, mostly under vine but also olive trees, fruit trees and vegetables. If you want to learn more about today's guest producer, you can by visiting: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aziendaagricolafrankcornelissen/ Instagram @frankcornelissen_winery Website https://www.frankcornelissen.it/ More about the moderator Stevie Kim: Stevie hosts Clubhouse sessions each week (visit Italian Wine Club & Wine Business on Clubhouse), these recorded sessions are then released on the podcast to immortalize them! She often also joins Professor Scienza in his shows to lend a hand keeping our Professor in check! “Success is never owned, it is rented, and the rent is due every day.” — Rory Vaden I love this quote by Rory Vaden. It fits training a dog so well, how could we possibly think about it any differently now that we've thought of it in that context? I have to put in effort EVERY day in order to have success. Right! Got it..... Except.... How does one measure success. Often as humans, we can only focus on the end stage, the BIG picture - the SUCCESS, and we think about the final product as our measure of success. This often leaves us throwing our hands up in frustration when we don't achieve it overnight or when we're confused about how to get from A to Z? What about the other 24 stepping stone letters? Think about dropping a child off for their first day of Kindergarten. If the only measure of success is a University Degree, you'll feel like a failure pretty quickly. So let's break things down into bite sized chunks of information and what better way to do that than with an acronym?
