ATL is a 2006 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film, and the feature film directorial debut of music video director Chris Robinson. The screenplay was written by Tina Gordon Chism from an original story by Antwone Fisher, and is loosely based on the experiences of the film's producers Dallas Austin and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins growing up in Atlanta, Georgia (ATL). The film is a coming-of-age tale concerning Rashad, played by Atlanta native and hip hop artist T.I. (credited as Tip Harris) in his film debut, and his friends in their final year in high school and on the verge of adulthood. The film also stars Antwan Andre Patton, more commonly known as Big Boi of the hip hop group OutKast, Evan Ross, Jackie Long, Jason Weaver, Lauren London, and Mykelti Williamson. ATL was the first feature film for its director and the majority of its cast. Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia in summer 2005, many celebrities from the city make cameo appearances, including Bone Crusher, Jazze Pha, Killer Mike, and Monica. BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. From the movies we all know and love to those hidden gems, there is no movie too big or small to be praised or roasted. We got eyes on The Farm! This episode we are joined by actor Yolonda Ross. You Might Know Her From The Chi, The Get Down, Whitney, Antwone Fisher, Stranger Inside, Treme, Go For Sisters, and How to Get Away with Murder. In this episode, we ask if Derek Luke's career panned out like it should have. We debate if Dr. Jerome killed his wife? And Jamel gives his closest Mrs. Tate story of his life. Is this movie about him? Maybe
Our intrepid Grouches are moving on to a new director! This time it is two-time Oscar-winner, Denzel Washington, and they're watching his 2002 directorial debut, Antwone Fisher. They'll laugh, they'll cry, they'll bring up topics they are vastly unqualified to talk about! So enjoy!

Who will cry for the little boy, the boy inside the man? – Antwone Fisher Our initiation as sons is a wildly intimate process that travels terrain both universal and unique. One universal feature is found in our origin story from Genesis 1 and 2, when God bestows on man the deeply seeded identity of very good. So what's gone wrong? It was Chesterton who said, “Every man has forgotten who he is....We are all under the same mental calamity; we have all forgotten our names. We have all forgotten what we really are.” With our true identity stolen, surrendered, wounded, and disfigured, we find ourselves reaching to anything and everything except the Living God to stabilize our reality. We set out on a path committed to avoiding God and the truth of the rupture within. Along the way, most of us unconsciously agree with the lie of original shamefulness and that at all costs, we must and can cover our shame. Yet denying our pain and determining to deliver ourselves from shame and fear need not be the final word on our story. There is another ending the Father is committed to provide, an ending of redemption, love, and joy beyond our wildest hope. Sam Jolman has become a craftsman in the restoration of the masculine soul. Today's guest was initially in the business of fashion til she seized the opportunity to fill in for a coworker as a background actor for a popular show. She made such an impression that she was asked to return week after week until she got her union card and the rest is history for YOLONDA ROSS. An independent film darling, Yolonda made her feature film debut in the award-winning independent film “Stranger Inside” in 2001. Yolonda went on to win an IFP Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the role as well as received her first Film Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category of Best Debut Performance. From there she's worked steadily from 24 to THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND, THIRD WATCH, LAW & ORDER, TREME, THE GET DOWN, and HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. But it is her sensitive turn in the recurring role as the tough but loving mother, "Nurse Jada", in Lena Waith's THE CHI on Showtime is where she's been able to deepen her craft. She's done all she can to not be a one trick pony by directing a short film but shares the challenges of producing her own work. Yolonda has made an impression on any director who has had the privilege to work with her including the dynamic Angela Bassett in WHITNEY and the incomparable Denzel Washington who cast her in ANTWONE FISHER. Yolonda shares her techniques in creating a character by using music, wigs, jewelry and even perfumes. She talks about how she built a career working predominantly with female directors and how she uses her body as a vessel to tell stories for those that are underrepresented. These are the unforgettable stories that landed YOLONDA ROSS right here. On this short edition of the CedTalks Podcast, I summarize and reflect on my experiences during the 2020-2021 school year. I share a poem titled “Who Will Cry for the Little Boy,” by Antwone Fisher, and shed light on how I’ve been healing through some difficult storms placed in between the school year.
Antwone Fisher was born in prison to a single mother and grew up in foster care before joining the United States Navy. Antwone had a hard life and spent 14 years of his childhood being abused physically, verbally, and sexually by his foster parents. His life story has been made into a movie where Denzel Washington plays him. Antwone shares a little bit about his journey and how he came to find a new extended family later in his life, and what a blessing his wife has been in his life throughout the last 25+ years. Key Takeaways Antwone spent 11 years in the Navy. Who is Antwone and where did he grow up? Antwone was told he was dyslexic so he spent extra time learning new words, this is how he first fell in love with words and the writing process. Antwone learned in the Navy that he can teach himself anything. Antwone received a check for $250k, but being dyslexic, he originally thought it was 2,500 dollars. What was it like growing up in foster care? What does Antwone think about the foster care system in the United States? Who is Antwone’s favorite social worker and mentor? Here’s what it matters to care about another individual, no matter how small the act might seem. JR shares why it’s important that men cry it out sometimes. It’s not a weakness. What was it like watching the Antwone Fisher film for the very first time? Antwone had doubts about talking about his story, in both his book and in the film, but when people had such a positive reaction to it, he realized the impact he had made on other people’s lives. Antwone shares a little bit about his wife and how he knew right away that she was the one for him. Why did Antwone want to look for his father? Antwone’s discovery allowed him to find and meet an entire extended family he did not know existed. Little did Antwone know. A lot of his extended family lived right around the corner from where he grew up in foster care and where he was getting abused by his foster family. It was surreal. Antwone met his mother and didn’t think much of it… until he got on a plane to go back home. People who have been through a lot don’t feel the need to sugarcoat things. Antwone’s mother told him she did not want him and that’s why she did not go back for him when he was in foster care. So many families don’t have a clear line of leadership. Antwone explains what he means. Antwone shares some of the leadership mistakes he made early in his military career. This episode I recite the poem ‘Who Will Cry For the Little Boy' by Antwon Fisher. Antwone Fisher (born August 3, 1959) is an American director, screenwriter, author, and film producer. His 2001 autobiographical book Finding Fish was a New York Times Best Seller. The 2002 film Antwone Fisher was written by Fisher and directed by Denzel Washington.Fisher was born in prison to a single mother. His father, Edward Elkins, had been shot dead by a jealous girlfriend two months earlier. Antwone was placed in a foster home weeks after he was born, and remained in foster care through most of his childhood. After living with a foster mother for two years, Fisher was taken away from her. He was then placed into another foster home with a family named the Picketts. He spent 14 years of his childhood with the Picketts and was abused physically, verbally, and sexually. Fisher reports his earliest memories are of being sexually abused, beaten, tied up and left in a basement for hours, sometimes days and the abuse left him in a state of paranoiaHe was then removed from the Pickett home after having a fight with his foster mother. Antwone was sent to George Junior Republic School, a discipline school for boys, from which he graduated before he joined the United States Navy.[1]Fisher joined the U.S. Navy to escape homelessness. Fisher spent 11 years in the Navy. Here, he met Lt. Commander Williams, a psychiatrist who helped him work through his emotional traumas. And this is the story we see played out in his debut film Antwon Fisher. Fisher now resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife LeNette and his children.

Find out more or purchase the movie here. Come by the podcast page JoyousPodcast.com to view the program notes and links for more information about today’s message. Today we welcomed musical artistry of Sarah Ingraham who can be found her website and on Facebook. Dr. Christian’s Corner It has been a fun season of exploring the spiritual messages of the cinema with all of you this summer. Seaside’s theme this summer has been healing. These films delivered that message beautifully: Black Panther with the dying of the old self and having your greater one rise to the occasion. Patch Adams' message of the healing power of humor. Wild had us take a look at healing grief and forgiving the self in the process, whereas Antwone Fisher had us healing childhood traumas and forgiving others. Green Book stretched many of us with taking an honest look at healing our racial bias. Eat, Pray, Love encouraged us on the healing journey of rediscovering ourselves. Today Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga will take us on a healing musical tour looking at self-worth and alcoholism. ~ In Love, Rev. Christian.
