Embracing Storytelling in a Noisy Digital World Park always knew he wanted to use creativity to make a living and advertising seemed like the perfect vehicle to access what he calls the commerce of arts. After studying music theory and communications at Washington State University, he worked for several small and mid-size agencies in different roles including writer, account executive, media planner, and more. At the time, he believed that the key to financial success was working for the big agencies. However, in hindsight, it was working at these smaller agencies and learning from so many sides of the business that gave him the experience he needed to launch his own agency in 1995. Park opened a traditional advertising agency, which is what he knew, and found himself at a loss once the digital era kicked in and changed everything. The traditional way was no longer working and Park started to look for ways to communicate in the new, noisy, digital world where the masses were becoming the media. His search for effective communication strategies led him to delve into the principles of storytelling, as taught in film schools. He discovered that Hollywood had mastered the art of engaging audiences in ways that traditional advertising had not. Seeing the power of storytelling, he realized very few people knew how to use these proven frameworks and started teaching his clients how to master this skill. As his clients experienced success, new opportunities arose, including a teaching position in storytelling at the University of Arizona. Over time, Park realized that he had evolved beyond his identity as an 'ad guy' and was embarking on a new journey as a teacher and coach. Clarity Beats Creativity in Today's Marketing Most agencies never really get storytelling and stick to exposing their audiences to death. According to Park, the emphasis on creativity in advertising no longer suffices now that it is not as exclusive as it used to be. Nowadays, creativity has become democratized as users create hysterical and clever memes all the time, which makes it harder for agencies to stand out on creativity. Instead, clarity has taken precedence, offering a more effective means of connecting with audiences. If you're not using the proper frameworks in communication then you're not creating the clarity to stand out and really move the needle. Clarity in storytelling means distilling complex ideas into digestible and relatable narratives. Every sale is a fictional story you get the client to buy into and then are expected to deliver on. Many agencies claim to be great storytellers, yet they often overwhelm their audiences resorting to an endless stream of exposition, failing to create a meaningful connection. Park advocates for the use of narrative frameworks that enhance clarity. Personally, he prefers to use the "and, but, therefore" structure, which helps simplify storytelling process and ensure that the message resonates with the audience. What is the ABT Framework? And - a statement of agreement, the setup or act one of any message. This statement of agreement should be written from the audience's point of view and demonstrate you understand them and appreciate what they want. But - after establishing agreement, the narrative must introduce a conflict or problem knows as the ‘but'. This element serves as a plot twist that captures attention and resonates with the audience's frustrations and challenges. Therefore - this presents a solution or a vision for what life could look like if the audience addresses the identified problem. This part of the narrative not only inspires hope but also encourages action, whether that means purchasing a product or engaging with a service. Many brands fail to connect with their audiences because they focus too heavily on their own narratives and offerings, rather than positioning their messages from the audience's perspective. By shifting the focus to the audience and employing the ABT framework, brands can create narratives that resonate on a personal level, fostering a sense of connection and loyalty. Simplifying Storytelling for Maximum Impact Park believes people often fall into the trap of selling to logic when instead they should be selling to emotions. Consumers often make purchase decisions driven by emotion, so appeal to that first and foremost and then justify the purchase using logic and reason. To create compelling narratives that resonate on an emotional level, ask yourself: 1. What does the client want? 2. What do they want to avoid? 3. Why should they listen to you? For instance, rather than starting with a statement about the brand's greatness, the narrative should begin with the audience's needs and challenges. Agencies like Venable Bells Partners and companies like Patagonia and Nike exemplify using storytelling to highlight customers' pain points and highlight an experience or an outcome instead of a product to great success. The truth is people mostly don't care about your agency or your offering. They care about what's in it for them, which should serve as a wake-up call for marketers who may be overly invested in their own narratives. While there is certainly a place for showcasing your expertise and credentials, framing the conversation around your audience's desires and challenges will foster a more engaging and relatable message. Good Problems vs. Bad Problems: Redefining Agency Focus Having recently read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson, the main takeaway for Park and what he advises agency owners to do is to look at life as a series of problems and focus on the "good problems" while minimizing or eliminating the "bad problems." This distinction is crucial for agency owners and professionals seeking to thrive in their respective fields. To effectively get the bad problems out of your life takes real focus on what you do, what you're good on, and what you like to do. Bad problems arise when you're not focused, have clarity and try to be too many things at once, which likely leads to burnout. On the contrary, when you're solving good problems aligned with your agency's strengths and market niche you'll feel a sense of flow and the work becomes not just a job, but a fulfilling endeavor. Here are nine acronyms to help your mental health.  Over the years, I have collected a set of acronyms that have helped my mental health and those I have conversations with. These are acronyms that aid in recovery. They are like little guide posts to get you thinking. I am sure there are probably others, but here are my contributions. Mental Health Acronyms F.A.S.S. – No Fixing, Advising, Saving, or Setting one straight This comes from the work of Parker Palmer and focuses on the kind of relationship we need to offer others.In my conversations, I keep F.A.S.S. in the back of my mind as a kind of guiding light.I try not to fix, advise, save, or set the person straight. Instead, I ask gently curious questions. Now there are exceptions. Sometimes you need to give advice and even save if someone is seriously unwell, but these are the exceptions, not the rule.I want to ‘listen people' into wellness and help them discover their path to change. F.A.S.S. challenges our need to be in control and to soothe our anxieties.Read further here. Please. It's the unhealthy victim mentality.There are healthy and unhealthy victims.Healthy victimhood sees the pain of life and wants help to go through it. If you talk to them a year later, they will still have a  P.L.O.M. in their mouth. It's an attitude all of us can easily slip into, but for some, it becomes a home where they live everything out of. Read further here – What to Do With Shame Slingers H.A.L.T. – Hungry Angry Lonely Tired This acronym comes from the recovery movement and acts as a kind of warning system reminding you to pause (halt!) and take notice of what's going on for you that makes you want to go to the pain relief strategy, such as picking up a drink or a drug.The question to ask is, ‘Am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, or Stressed?' Then, ask yourself further questions such as ‘What are the healthy options I can choose rather than the old destructive patterns my brain is offering me? Read further here. What Is HALT? The Dangers of Being Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired   S.T.A.N. Plan – Simple, Timed, Aimed, Negotiated This is a little acronym that I discovered in the story of Daniel and the plan he created to get him out of a tough situation.I often use S.T.A.N. when helping someone create a plan of action.  When creating a plan of action, I like to ask these questions.Is the plan … Simple to understand by all involved. It's not complex, long, or difficult. Timed for review, not completion. Good plans have a time for a review to see how progress is going and if anything needs to change in the plan. Aimed at achieving something of deep importance. Sometimes the reason we don't achieve the plan is because the outcome simply doesn't matter that much to the heart. Negotiated with key others. Part 2 E+R=O – Event plus Response equals Outcome We all have events happen to us, but how we respond will determine the outcome.The key to a different outcome is to choose a different response. It comes from the work of Randy Olson and his study of great speeches.And these things happened But this was the response Therefore this was the outcome. Read further here – The ABT Framework for Listening Well B.G.E.S.C. – Brief. Gentle. Early. Specific. Consequences. This comes from the work of David Riddell and relates to expressing yourself to someone else when you have been hurt. Brief. Make your reply short. Don't go on and on. Keep it short Gentle. Speak in a tone appropriate to the situation. We don't need to yell, and we don't need to be meek and whisper. Look at them and speak gently. Early. Give your reply as soon as possible. Don't leave it till later unless you need to prepare your response. You don't want this anger to go on and on. Paul writes,” Don't go to bed angry” Ephesians 4:26 Specific. Make sure your reply is specific to the issue. Don't go on to past hurts and problems. Deal only with the current issue. Consequences. A good reply points out the consequences of what has happened and will happen. It is important to state how you feel about what happened. “By you doing this, I felt very sad, etc.”. You may also need to point out what will happen if they do that again. ” I have decided that if you behave like that again, then I will….”Read further here – 16 Tips When There Is Socially Unacceptable Behavior In A Group Setting J.A.D.E. = F.O.G. – Justifying, Arguing, Defending, or Explaining = Fear, Obligation, Guilt This is one that I have only recently added to my toolbox of acronyms.J.A.D.E. is an Al-Anon 12-step slogan that reminds us not to engage in justifying, arguing, defending, and explaining. When you do this with unhealthy people often they will throw something back at you that will stimulate feelings of Fear, Obligation, and Guilt. F.O.G.Often the healthiest response is to give no response at all.Read further these articles. Dealing with Difficult Family Members: Dont Justify, Argue, Defend, or Explain Circular Arguments, Emotional Reasoning and JADE (Justify, Argue, Defend, Explain) The Narcissist-Codependent Trap: Having Boundaries Ends the Relationship More Thoughts on FOG, Hoovers and No Contact When Ending a Relationship with a Narcissist, Borderline, Histrionic and/or Sociopath Another one, as a bonus. T.T.A.Q. = Title, Theme, Affect, Questions This is a useful acronym to help us understand our dreams Title. Always give it a title. It is a short story or movie and deserves a title. The act of choosing a title offers insight into the meaning of your dream. Theme. What is it principally about? This is a short phrase that describes the topic. If it was a movie, would it be a thriller, a comedy, a romance? Ask God to help you identify the overall theme. Affect. What was the emotional affect expressed in it? What were the feelings felt by the principal character in the story or movie? Were there certain emotions expressed by others? What feelings did you experience when you awoke? Describe the emotional tone or impact of the dream. Questions. What questions does the story seem to be asking of you? The authors of this technique suggest you listen to the story as if it were a friend asking you a meaningful question. The act of formulating the question/s will give an interpretation. We have produced over thirty episodes of Set For Sentencing including our Web extras, AND we're just getting started.  BUT no episode has yet solely focused on the work I do helping lawyers tell their most powerful sentencing narratives and producing defense documentaries to humanize clients and bring their life story into living color. THEREFORE, I thought it might be interesting to flip the script and showcase some other creators who have been gracious enough to invite me on their podcasts.  That way, you can learn about what I do in more detail, from the perspective of some of my incredible partners in the world of business, science, and beyond! Park Howell knows that if you're a leading sales professional, you want to communicate and resonate on a deep level to convert prospects to life-long evangelists for your brand. But you may not connect as well as you could because you lead with logic and reason. Your audience wants the emotional pull of an irresistible story.  That's why Park coaches salespeople with his ABT framework to escalate and accelerate the sales process. Storytelling is the fundamental agile communication tool to get everyone on board as quickly as possible—especially prospects. They learn and perfect their craft over years of practice. When armed with the right framework—you may not elevate to the level of experts—but you can give yourself an unfair advantage in the sales realm. It comes back to how to use narrative to your benefit. But you have to understand the magic to cast the spell. If you learn storytelling techniques, it will up your game and boost your sales. That's why Park created the ABT framework.  Park's ABT framework The ABT framework—i.e. the “And, but, and therefore” framework—is set up on the three forces of story: agreement, contradiction, and consequence. The limbic brain is a pattern-seeking cause-and-effect, decision-making, buying brain. It loves the setup, problem, and resolution dynamic that's offered through storytelling.  Agreement: You place your audience at the center of the story. So you must understand who they are, appreciate what they want and why it's important to them this is the “and”). Contradiction: You must empathize with why they don't currently have what they want. What are the obstacles? What “but” is in the way? Consequence/Resolution: How are you uniquely equipped to help them get what they want? This is the “therefore.” It's about understanding, empathizing, and appreciating who your prospect is, what they want, and how you can help them get it.  Park's top 3 storytelling dos and don'ts As you use the ABT framework, Park notes there are some dos and don'ts you want to keep in mind:  According to storytelling expert Robert McKee, You have to understand your audience in a “God-like way.” Who are you writing the story for? What do they care about? How will you make your story something they can relate to and connect with? It's the same for storytelling in business sales and marketing. Help your prospect imagine what a brighter future looks like for them if they work with you. No bullet-point list of features and functions can make this happen. You have to fire up the theater of the mind and imprint images on their brain so you become remarkably memorable.  The most vigorous stories rely on brevity. Use specific well-crafted language because the power is in the specifics.  Don't believe you're already a good storyteller because chances are you're probably not. You have to be intentional and use a framework to evolve from winging it to winning with it.  Do not “and, and, and” your audience to death. Use the “setup, problem, and resolution” dynamic to build your storytelling abilities and tell a great story. Don't dismiss the power of storytelling as a gimmick. Storytelling will differentiate you in a crowded market, build urgency for your offering, and deliver on the promises that you make.  How do you employ brevity in storytelling? We all have a story, and it's full of ‘and's, but this is a story to learn from. So, therefore, we notice the ABT framework in ourselves and others. There is a pattern to our lives; once you see it, you will see it everywhere. It's in every great story, including your own. I came across it a few years ago while listening to a podcast about why Donald Trump won his first presidential election. He told a better story. An ABT story. Make America Great. And, But, Therefore. Every great story has an ABT. From a Fairytale to a Thriller. Cinderella had no dress AND shoes AND coach to go to the ball, BUT her Fairy Godmother waves a magic wand and provides for her. THEREFORE, she has the shoes, the dress, and the coach. Jason Bourne has a bomb ticking AND has only 30 seconds before it explodes and kills thousands of people, BUT because he has had years of training, he knows what to do. So, THEREFORE, he calls his grandmother for advice. You will be able to see this sequence in your own life story. In the simple. ‘I am hungry, but I have food in the pantry; therefore, I will go and have something to eat.' In the complex stories such as ‘I fell in love, and things were going ok, but then I found out she was a chronic gambler. Therefore I am going to get some help and try and sort this mess out.
