Would you like access to our advanced agency training for FREE? https://www.agencymastery360.com/training Do you use storytelling to connect with prospects and clients? Many agency owners know how to share great stories but use them to talk about their agency capabilities. Instead, today's guest says we should use stories to connect with potential clients, creating content that resonates and engages them. Today's featured guest is a creator of powerful brand stories who helps his clients understand the value of starting with a strong story framework. He believes clarity beats creativity when it comes to standing out in today's market. Tune in to learn about his transition from agency life to consulting, teaching, and speaking on the power of story. Park Howell is an EMMY award-winning business storytelling coach at The Business of Story. He is also a story strategist, keynote speaker, and podcaster known as the world's most industrious storyteller. He started as an agency guy, founding his agency Park & Co. in 1995, and then the digital era compelled him to transition to storytelling and the creative arts. He discusses the valuable lessons learned while working with small and midsize agencies and how his unique background and insights into the power of story have shaped his career and approach to creativity. In this interview, we'll discuss: How clarity beats creativity in today's marketing. The ABT Framework. Selling to emotion, not logic. Embracing Storytelling in a Noisy Digital World Park always knew he wanted to use creativity to make a living and advertising seemed like the perfect vehicle to access what he calls the commerce of arts. After studying music theory and communications at Washington State University, he worked for several small and mid-size agencies in different roles including writer, account executive, media planner, and more. At the time, he believed that the key to financial success was working for the big agencies. However, in hindsight, it was working at these smaller agencies and learning from so many sides of the business that gave him the experience he needed to launch his own agency in 1995. Park opened a traditional advertising agency, which is what he knew, and found himself at a loss once the digital era kicked in and changed everything. The traditional way was no longer working and Park started to look for ways to communicate in the new, noisy, digital world where the masses were becoming the media. His search for effective communication strategies led him to delve into the principles of storytelling, as taught in film schools. He discovered that Hollywood had mastered the art of engaging audiences in ways that traditional advertising had not. Seeing the power of storytelling, he realized very few people knew how to use these proven frameworks and started teaching his clients how to master this skill. As his clients experienced success, new opportunities arose, including a teaching position in storytelling at the University of Arizona. Over time, Park realized that he had evolved beyond his identity as an 'ad guy' and was embarking on a new journey as a teacher and coach. Clarity Beats Creativity in Today's Marketing Most agencies never really get storytelling and stick to exposing their audiences to death. According to Park, the emphasis on creativity in advertising no longer suffices now that it is not as exclusive as it used to be. Nowadays, creativity has become democratized as users create hysterical and clever memes all the time, which makes it harder for agencies to stand out on creativity. Instead, clarity has taken precedence, offering a more effective means of connecting with audiences. If you're not using the proper frameworks in communication then you're not creating the clarity to stand out and really move the needle. Clarity in storytelling means distilling complex ideas into digestible and relatable narratives. Every sale is a fictional story you get the client to buy into and then are expected to deliver on. Many agencies claim to be great storytellers, yet they often overwhelm their audiences resorting to an endless stream of exposition, failing to create a meaningful connection. Park advocates for the use of narrative frameworks that enhance clarity. Personally, he prefers to use the "and, but, therefore" structure, which helps simplify storytelling process and ensure that the message resonates with the audience. What is the ABT Framework? And - a statement of agreement, the setup or act one of any message. This statement of agreement should be written from the audience's point of view and demonstrate you understand them and appreciate what they want. But - after establishing agreement, the narrative must introduce a conflict or problem knows as the ‘but'. This element serves as a plot twist that captures attention and resonates with the audience's frustrations and challenges. Therefore - this presents a solution or a vision for what life could look like if the audience addresses the identified problem. This part of the narrative not only inspires hope but also encourages action, whether that means purchasing a product or engaging with a service. Many brands fail to connect with their audiences because they focus too heavily on their own narratives and offerings, rather than positioning their messages from the audience's perspective. By shifting the focus to the audience and employing the ABT framework, brands can create narratives that resonate on a personal level, fostering a sense of connection and loyalty. Simplifying Storytelling for Maximum Impact Park believes people often fall into the trap of selling to logic when instead they should be selling to emotions. Consumers often make purchase decisions driven by emotion, so appeal to that first and foremost and then justify the purchase using logic and reason. To create compelling narratives that resonate on an emotional level, ask yourself: 1. What does the client want? 2. What do they want to avoid? 3. Why should they listen to you? For instance, rather than starting with a statement about the brand's greatness, the narrative should begin with the audience's needs and challenges. Agencies like Venable Bells Partners and companies like Patagonia and Nike exemplify using storytelling to highlight customers' pain points and highlight an experience or an outcome instead of a product to great success. The truth is people mostly don't care about your agency or your offering. They care about what's in it for them, which should serve as a wake-up call for marketers who may be overly invested in their own narratives. While there is certainly a place for showcasing your expertise and credentials, framing the conversation around your audience's desires and challenges will foster a more engaging and relatable message. Good Problems vs. Bad Problems: Redefining Agency Focus Having recently read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson, the main takeaway for Park and what he advises agency owners to do is to look at life as a series of problems and focus on the "good problems" while minimizing or eliminating the "bad problems." This distinction is crucial for agency owners and professionals seeking to thrive in their respective fields. To effectively get the bad problems out of your life takes real focus on what you do, what you're good on, and what you like to do. Bad problems arise when you're not focused, have clarity and try to be too many things at once, which likely leads to burnout. On the contrary, when you're solving good problems aligned with your agency's strengths and market niche you'll feel a sense of flow and the work becomes not just a job, but a fulfilling endeavor. This is Part 2 of our two part story about Woodland Park, Colorado, a bucolic little town in the shadow of Pikes Peak. A place where the schools have been overtaken by a group of people who know little to nothing about education. They also give zero f*cks about the faculty and staff of the school district. It's a crazy story that gets worse by the day-mass exodus of teachers, families pulling their kids out, and things like the teachers being made members of a union-ish organization that they didn't give any indication they'd like to be part of. And in Colorado, schools are locally controlled-meaning the state can't intervene. The acting superintendent can run rampant, with the support of the board. The only way out is electing a new board. We spoke to Logan Ruths, the former records custodian for Woodland Park, who has been embroiled in this situation as it has unfolded, and Matt Gawlowski, parent/activist and developer of the "Support Woodland Park Schools" website (https://supportwpschools.com/). It's a story you don't want to skip. As the title says-it's a cautionary tale. For every single district out there. Be sure to check out Miss V's terrific Substack, "Over Drinks!" If you heard of a corporation that had secret meetings, non-disclosure of public documents, and a company policy that included a gag order for employees' personal social media, you might say "wow, that's a pretty toxic environment." Now...suppose you found out it was actually a school district? Shocking, right? Well, not so much these days. We are talking about the very real Woodland Park, Colorado school district, where the interim superintendent, despite being recalled as a member of a board of education elsewhere, was the ONLY candidate considered. Where administrators and teachers are leaving in droves. Where a charter school has been placed in the middle school building, causing the sixth grade to be moved-without a discussion with building principals or teachers. And where the Records Custodian-the person who handles all of the Open Records Requests-was unceremoniously terminated. Strangely, after he voiced objections to some of the less-than-open practices of the District, including instructing him to not fulfill requests. We spoke to Logan Ruths, the former records custodian for Woodland Park, and Matt Gawlowski, parent/activist and developer of the "Support Woodland Park Schools" website. The nostalgia of the 80’s and 90’s is a driving force of our pop-culture today. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and thrilling documentaries like HBO Max’s Class Action Park, it is now easier than ever to get a glimpse into that era and make us push the limits of our recollections of the past. In Non-Compliant Podcast Episode 31, Host Jay Edelson, nationally recognized plaintiff’s attorney and Founder of Edelson PC, and Guest Seth Porges, Co-Director of hit HBO Max documentary Class Action Park, discuss the murky areas of nostalgia, the wild story of Action Park, the rise of streaming services, and the process of making a documentary. To start the show, Jay and Seth get nostalgic and talk about how 80’s and 90’s culture that has shaped who we are today (4:15). It is fascinating to see the transformation of kids that were often left alone to push their limits in that era, as they turn into the helicopter parents today that are hyper-focused on their children’s activities. Next, Jay and Seth delve into the wild true story behind Class Action Park and how its chaotic atmosphere made life-long memories for anyone that experienced its glory (10:05). While such a park doesn’t exist today, the documentary gives viewers a chance to ask themselves how they would respond to the anarchy and chaos (12:23). On a broader scale, Class Action Park also gets viewers to revisit their own experiences of growing up in the 80’s or 90’s in an era with more freedom (14:30).Later in the show, Jay and Seth discuss the growing popularity of documentaries that have evolved from Ken Burns-style informational shows to the wild-romps like Class Action Park (25:04). The rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max have allowed for more viewers to access documentaries for the first time, especially during the pandemic (27:36). But the uptick in popularity is also due to the differing style of documentaries we see today that force us to take a fresh look at reality (29:00). To wrap the show, Jay and Seth break down the process of making a documentary and how Class Action Park went from concept to one of the most popular HBO Max movies (30:50). Even with multiple streaming services, filmmakers must put in a lot of work to get attention for their projects to reach wider audiences through promotions and word of mouth. But at the end of the day, documentaries and movies will capture the most audiences if they are authentic and feel like they come from people with a passion for the underlying narrative (38:00). Check out the show to hear more about Class Action Park, why Chris Gethard is a great comedian and storyteller (22:00), and to catch a glimpse into Seth’s next project (40:00). When you are in business, you are in the wish-granting business. When you really think about it, what you offer is what helps your customers achieve what they're wishing for. And when you can find a way to communicate what you stand for, how you will grant those wishes, and why you are unique in doing so, you will elevate the humanity of your business. But it begins with you; especially for the self-employed. What is your backstory? How can you connect the dots of your life to figure out where you fit in the market? My origin story of being a photographer is what distinguishes me in what I do today; I help people truly be seen for who they are and what they do. And so as you set the stage for your business you can then begin to weave in all the elements of your narrative that will ultimately lead your customers to invest in you, the person, the human, not just your brand.  To dive deeper into the Business of Story, I've brought on The World's Most Industrious Storyteller, Park Howell. The small town that is tucked up high on a mountain was a place for members of the Arapaho tribe to gather and spend time during the summer. It was named after early settler Joel Estes. In 1903 a road was constructed from nearby Loveland up to Estes Park. With the help of Freelan Oscar (F.O.) Stanley, Stanley Steamers the town was able to modernize very quickly. Finding the courage to be yourself –– and showing up as your full self everyday –– isn't the easiest thing to do for most. But that's exactly what Park Howell put his time and energy into doing and it's been one of the keys to living a fulfilling life, personally and professionally. As the founder of The Business of Story, a platform-based system that helps purpose-driven brands find their voice and connect through the art of storytelling, Park knows firsthand the struggles that come with growing a business. Well, two in his case. He is also the founder of Park&Co., an advertising and marketing agency, which has been in business for over 24 years, as well as the host of The Business of Story podcast.  In this episode of The Success Lab Podcast, we have a frank discussion with Park about what the early days were like as a startup entrepreneur, how he eventually achieved a true work-life balance, and the importance of simply showing up and following up. Read on for a selection of questions, and listen to the entire interview by clicking the player above. What led you to create Park&Co.? I grew up in the Pacific Northwest in the Seattle area. I graduated from Washington State University and moved down to Phoenix in 1985 thinking I was going to be here for a year or two. But I met my wife and had three kids and have been here ever since. While here, I started working as a writer for a public relations firm. I really love the creativity of copywriting for advertising so I moved over to the ad world side. I worked then in-house for a company called Quorum International as its creative director. When I left there, I knew it was time for me to start my own ad agency so I started as a one man band and grew it from there.  What were those early days like?  In the early days I was literally working out of this tiny little room in the back of our very first house that we bought while raising our three kids. Like any entrepreneurial struggle, you get up early, you get on the phone, you deal with clients, and you fend off little kids trying to get your attention while you're trying to get work done at home. You live that for what seems like 24/7 for the first couple of years until you get your feet beneath you. I was very blessed because my very first client was Forever Living Products International. They brought me into their fold like family and I worked with them for about 18 years and still do some consulting with them on the side. My second client was Sky Harbor International Airport and I represented them for about 10 years. I had a really fortunate one-two punch with clients when starting up my agency. What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered in growing Park&Co.? I remember on a couple of occasions becoming very overwhelmed by biting off way more than I could possibly chew. Although I had the energy to put into it, I was also looking at work-life balance with our family. I grew up in a family of seven kids and my parents were always there for us. Balance is really important to me. It's something you chip away at it and hope to figure it out sooner than later. We did, but it was a challenge, especially while we were continuing to build the company without spending a lot of money on employees.  What has been one of the best things you've done for The Business of Story to help propel its growth? The (Business of Story) podcast I do once a week. It is a lot of work, but it enables me to connect with amazing minds from all around the world. We cover every aspect of business storytelling. I've also got a really excellent person that handles my community development and SEO for my company. What was one of the most important lessons you've learned along the way? I think the secret to achieving your goals is 50% showing up and 50% following up. You have to do what you say you're going to do, otherwise you will lose complete and utter credibility.  What connections along your journey have made a big impact? There was a gentleman who has totally changed the course of my life. His name is Bruno Sarda. At the time, he was working at Dell in sustainability and supply chain and was also teaching at Arizona State University. At a conference in Phoenix, Bruno came over, introduced himself and we became friends. Bruno called me one day and said ASU was looking for a leadership professor and he wanted to invite me to write out the communications curriculum around my storytelling program. I'd never done anything like that before and I ended up doing it for five years. You just never ever know when that person's going to step into your world and have that tremendous impact.  What's one piece of advice you would give to fellow entrepreneurs looking to make impactful connections? Be yourself –– show up as who you are. I know people hear that all the time, but often when we're young in our careers and we're trying to look accomplished and as if we have our act together, it gets in the way of who we really are and all the foibles and the vulnerabilities we have. I was talking to my mom, who's 95 and in great health, and I asked her, “What's the difference from 30 years ago to who you are now?” She said, “I worry a heck of a lot less.” I would tell people, stop worrying about themselves and get over the fact that you don't have it all figured out because none of us do. Speed round: Coffee drinker, yes or no? Yes. One business tool you're geeking out over right now? My Calendly calendar invite system. Favorite piece of technology? This microphone and the ability to be able to record. What's one book you'd pass along to a fellow entrepreneur? One of my favorite storytelling books in business is Shawn Callahan's Putting Stories to Work. One person you'd like to make a connection with? Ben Folds. My entreé into agency life was as a copywriter. I loved digging around and finding the story underneath the story. That love was the foundation for my belief in the power of a strong and smart brand. For decades my agency has helped clients define, develop, and deploy their brand both internally and externally. It’s still some of my favorite work to do. Understanding your unique story is a powerful competitive advantage for our clients and our own agencies. Without understanding what makes us unique – we have to swim in the sea of sameness and that’s definitely swimming upstream! In this episode, we’re digging into storytelling by understanding it at the root level. There is an architecture to stories and I have gone to the expert to learn more about that structure and how, as agencies, we can better use it to build our clients’ brands – and our own as well. My guest is Park Howell. For 25 years, Park ran an agency in Arizona called Park & Co. At a certain point in his career, he pivoted his agency to become a storytelling consultant, helping clients learn how to tell their own story. Park founded his consultancy, The Business of Story, on January 1, 2016, so he could partner with leaders of purpose-driven organizations and help them clarify their stories, amplify their impact, and simplify their lives. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How the hero’s journey has been with us since the beginning of storytelling Why story is one of the most powerful tools in your brand building arsenal How to help clients live into their most powerful stories Who should be the hero of the story (the answer might surprise you) Why it is so hard for agencies to discover and tell their own stories How storytelling connects with something so primal in all of us How to use storytelling to help customers fulfill what they wish, will, and want Ways to Contact Park Howell: Website: https://businessofstory.com/ What’s Your Story worksheet: https://businessofstory.com/storytelling-tools/# Storytelling Workbook: https://businessofstory.com/brand-storytelling-workbook/

“Our brains are wired to recognize story structure, to help us gain meaning. Our job as communicators is to bring meaning to everything we do.” Park Howell helps organizations, communications professionals, and executive MBA students unlock the secrets of storytelling to create more meaningful brand experiences. I couldn’t wait to chat with Park about the “Business of Story” on this week’s podcast. About Park Howell Park Howell founded Park&Co, an award-winning brand and creative consultancy, in 1995 in Phoenix, AZ. The agency ignites the growth of purpose-driven people, products, companies and causes through the power of storytelling. Park was named Advertising Person of the Year in 2010 by the American Advertising Federation of Metro Phoenix. The following year, his agency was recognized among the Top 10 Impact Companies in Arizona by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. In addition to running Park&Co, Park created and is teaching the communications curriculum for the new Executive Master’s for Sustainability Leadership program at Arizona State University. He turns sustainability executives into Chief Storytelling Officers to advance their social initiatives further, faster. The curriculum is based on the agency’s proven 10-step brand strategy and storytelling method called the Story Cycle. Park takes readers through the proprietary process in a book called, Story Built: How To Craft Spellbinding Brand Stories in 10 Easy Steps, which will be published this Fall. You can explore his insights about sustainable storytelling, and download a preview of his book, at ParkHowell.com. He’s also the host of The Business of Story podcast. He is a graduate of Washington State University, and for 30 years has combined his degrees in communications and music composition and theory to craft and tell compelling stories that sell. What drives Park is his insatiable curiosity about how persuasive stories help us nudge the world in any direction we choose.
