In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, we are joined by an old friend and confidant - AG2r-Citroën's Larry Warbasse - for a full debrief on the former US road racing champion's 2023 season. Daniel Friebe quizzes Larry about personal landmarks, successes and disappointments in what was a long, tiring campaign for the 33-year-old. There's also an honest analysis of AG2r's fortunes over the past few months - and where they can and need to improve next year. In addition, we round up the week's news, including the latest attempt to bolster pro cycling's income streams and the remarkable homecoming of a Colombian idol.

The third and final Grand Tour of the men's cycling season, La Vuelta a España, rolls out of Barcelona on Saturday August 26, and in this XL race preview we look ahead to what we are already calling “El Clásico”. After the usual weekly news round-up, Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie first examine the route, then the riders and particularly the favourites for overall glory in Madrid. To help them, they enlist one of the voices of Belgian cycling, commentator Renaat Schotte, our resident great Dane, Brian Nygaard, and Eurosport's eyes on the ground in Spain, Laura Meseguer. We also hear from the Motown Maestro, Larry Warbasse, who'll be lining up in Barcelona for his AG2r-Citroën team, plus there's a trip down TCP memory lane, through our own daily coverage of the Vuelta since 2016. In this week's regular episode, we revisit last Sunday's Men's World Championship Road Race in the company of AG2r-Citroën ace Larry Warbasse, who was making his senior début in USA national team colours at the weekend. Despite Larry's vital work early in the race, US team leader Neilson Powless couldn't stop Mathieu van der Poel claiming the rainbow jersey - & we get Larry's thoughts on a scintillating race & controversial Glasgow course. There's also a brief & for Daniel excruciating discussion about the Van der Poel pitstop which made the tabloid headlines in Scotland on Monday. We hear, too, where the other medals have gone so far in Glasgow & look ahead to the men's TT. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. After their first appearance to look back on the 2022 season a few weeks ago, we reunite Joe Dombrowski of Astana-Qazaqstan and Larry Warbasse of AG2R Citroën and turn our gaze and thoughts forward to their respective 2023 campaigns. We ponder their hopes, dreams and fears for the coming campaign, and reflect on a broader question: to what extent is the grunt work that goes into arriving at and staying in peak condition science, and to what extent is it art? At the heart of the discussion are some of the points raised by the trailblazing triathlon coach Olav Aleksander Bu in a recent appearance on the Rich Roll podcast, which you can access here. https://www.richroll.com/all-episodes/ As ever, we also review the week's main news stories, including the shock non-retirement of Nairo Quintana. Colombian journalist Juan Carlos Berajano joins us to talk about how that plot twist has been greeted back in his and Quintana's homeland. I denne episode gennemgår vi følgende mandskaber: - Astana (12:11) - Team DSM (27:32) - EF Education-EasyPost (36:34) - Team Jayco-AlUla (46:01) - AG2R Citroën Team (56:35) - Team Arkea Samsic (01:03:51) Vært: Peter Kroman Brems Medvært: Miriam Kroman Brems
The Cycling Podcast rings in the New Year by looking ahead to the 2023 season and some of the big storylines that may or may not play out on and off the road. Daniel Friebe is joined by former pro team manager and spin doctor Brian Nygaard and current AG2R Citroën ace Larry Warbasse. Having discussed the main headlines of the festive period, our not-so-clairvoyant trio hears from various other Cycling Podcast regulars, who this week provide their 2023 predictions for our deliberation. Can one nation really win all three Grand Tours in 2023? Or one team? And will the revelation of the next twelve months be a rookie who calls himself “Il Bandito”? Find out which galaxy brains are behind these and several other fanciful prognostications in the episode. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. Endurance News: Oceanside 70.3 Pro Results Jackson Laundry Surprises and Taylor Knibb Dominates in Oceanside It's always hard to know what to expect at the first long-course race of the North American season—and Ironman 70.3 Oceanside in southern California delivered even more drama than usual this year, with a few breakout performances and a sprint finish. The drama was all in the men's race—where the unheralded Jackson Laundry took the lead with less than a mile to go and charged hard for a win that looked like a shock even to him. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “It doesn't really sink in until you're right there and there's no one left to catch you.” And then behind Laundry, Lionel Sanders and Rudy von Berg sprinted to the line in one of the closest finishes we've ever seen at long-course. Until that final mile it actually looked like an event that would be locked up by double gold medalist Alistair Brownlee. Out of a large (very large) group on the swim, a bike pack slowly whittled down until at T2 it was Brownlee, Laundry, von Berg, and Ben Kanute. The pace on the run was blistering—and behind them, after losing his nutrition on the bike, Sanders was running even faster. Ultimately, it became a race of seconds. Laundry and von Berg raced neck and neck, until the Canadian put in a surge for what seemed to be a lock on second. But he didn't stop, he kept going faster and faster—catching Brownlee and putting down a sub-5:00 mile at the end of the 13.1. Behind him, Sanders had caught the suddenly struggling Brownlee and then reached von Berg with just hundreds of meters to go. They sprinted; Sanders outleaned. It was a 1:10:11 run for Laundry v. a 1:10:55 run for von Berg and a 1:08:29 run for Sanders to come to the line shoulder-to-shoulder and collapse. In fourth, Brownlee slowed and came home with “just” a 1:11:04 run. That's how close the day was. In the women's race, it was maybe less about the drama and more about a coronation. The 24-year-old Knibb controlled the swim, according to her competitors, clocking the fastest of the day (23:33 in choppy conditions); she got to the front of the bike after a slower transition to put on socks and then had the fastest bike of the day too (2:20:17); and then took out of T2 nearly three minutes in the lead and had only the 4th fastest run of the day (1:17:48) to win handily. In this episode of Kilometre 0, we tell the story of one of the longest-running teams in the peloton. The AG2R-Citroën team is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Vincent Lavenu's team started life as Chazal, sponsored by a charcuterie producer, in 1992 and rode the Tour de France for the first time in 1993, with former Vuelta winner Eric Caritoux and future Tour stage winner Jaan Kirsipuu in the line-up. Later the team was sponsored by the supermarket chain Casino and insurance firm AG2R came on board as a co-sponsor in 1998 before taking over as title sponsors in 2000. Arguably the team's most successful years, certainly in the Tour de France, were when Romain Bardet was riding in their colours. In this episode we hear from AG2R riders past and present, including Simon Gerrans, Larry Warbasse, Oliver Naesen and Aurelien Paret-Peintre, and discover there's more to the team than their now trademark brown shorts. It's been an action-packed few days for our audio diarists as the Tour de France hit the Alps and reached its first rest day. Our quartet have been documenting the race each day, letting listeners hear their thoughts as the Tour unfolds. For Ben O'Connor of AG2R-Citroën there was a phenomenal stage win at Tignes which put him in the virtuel maillot jaune for a while on the final climb and eventually lifted him to second place overall behind Tadej Pogacar. At the other end of the peloton was Tim Declercq of Deceuninck-Quick Step, who was part of the gruppetto riding to make it to the finish inside the time limit and keep their sprinter Mark Cavendish in the race. Victor Campenaerts of Qhubeka-Next Hash talks about making the astonishing breakaway on Friday's stage to Le Creusot only to realise that Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel had made it too. But we start with Connor Swift, the Yorkshireman riding for Arkéa-Samsic, who talks about his time trial effort to Laval and how he realised why the crowd cheered him by name in the race against the clock... Brad and Graham Willgoss look back on another rip-roaring day at the Tour de France that saw AG2R-Citroën's Ben O'Connor solo to a brilliant stage win that cut Tadej Pogacar's lead on GC to just two minutes. One HC and two Category 1 climbs on the Queen Stage of the race took their toll on the peloton, decimating the field on Stage 9."The last two days, it's been hard to follow it," says Brad. "I've not seen a Tour de France like it. It was savage today, and there's not many riders who could have coped with those conditions and those temperatures like Ben O'Connor did. He did it in such style, as well."Tadel Pogacar again looked imperious, hitting the rocket boosters on the final climb and riding away from Team Ineos's Richard Carapaz. Pogacar's superiority has brought with it questions from some quarters that Brad believes are unfair."It's funny how it's always Ineos who face those questions when there's a performance like that, and people like Chris Froome after his performance on Ventoux," he says. "But they don't seem to be raised with Pogacar, and I don't think they should be raised. He's a phenomenon of the sport."One bright spot for Dave Brailsford's squad: it was a much better day for Geraint Thomas. "I'm really pleased for him," says Brad. "I don't think this race is over for G yet. It is for GC, but he can pick up a stage win the way he was going today."Brad was also impressed with Mark Cavendish and Deceuninck – Quick-Step's efforts to get Cav through what he called 'the one stage I was terrified of':"I saw him getting dropped on the first climb, and he had three or four teammates around him," says Brad. "It shows the difference that a team makes to you, committed to a cause and committed to Mark as well. And it shows he was lacking on the team front a couple of years ago, and he's back in his rightful place."Brad sums up the first week: "It's been savage, and I don't remember a Tour like it." A much-needed rest day, then – but lots to look forward to."We're on the race after that," says Brad. "So it's going to go up a level."Brought to you by Zwift, where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
