Ann Garcia is a partner of Independent Progressive Advisors, an RIA based out of Portland that oversees approximately $115 million in assets under management for 120 clients. Ann has distinguished herself by developing a nationally recognized expertise in college financial planning, a specialty that has grown alongside her advisory business, now focusing on mid-career professionals who balance saving for their children's college education with their own retirement planning. This dual focus reflects the evolving needs of her clientele as they navigate significant financial milestones. Listen in as Ann shares how she developed her reputation as a college planning expert by transforming client queries into a specialized blog that gained national attention, eventually leading to the publication of a book on college planning and the creation of an online course. She also discusses how her expertise has attracted mid-career professionals, to the point where her firm is nearing capacity in its current form, how purchasing a retiring advisor's practice laid the groundwork for the firm she desired, and how she refined her sales skills early on by taking meetings with all prospects who approached her, even if they were not a good fit for her firm. Ann also emphasizes the importance of initiating early discussions on college affordability within families and describes her decision to leave a prominent firm to create one that aligns with her values, allowing her to serve clients she truly understands and appreciates. Paying for college can be one of the most daunting financial challenges parents face, but a well thought-out plan that combines good parenting and sound financial planning can make it manageable. On this episode of CFO at Home, Vince talks with Ann Garcia, author of "How to Pay for College," about strategies to effectively save for college, prioritize financial goals, and navigate the myriad of scholarship opportunities available. Ann shares invaluable insights on the importance of early planning, the benefits of 529 college savings plans, and how to balance saving for college with other financial priorities like emergency funds and retirement. You can learn more about Ann by visiting Howtopayforcollege.com Key Takeaways: Start Early: The ideal time to start saving for college is as early as possible, even before the child is born. 529 plans are a highly recommended vehicle for college savings due to their tax advantages. Prioritizing Savings: Emergency savings should come first, followed by retirement, and then college savings.  Scholarship Opportunities: Every student is eligible for scholarships somewhere. Researching and applying for scholarships can significantly reduce the cost of college. Colleges offer need-based and merit-based scholarships, and there are scholarships for a wide range of skills and activities. ROI Analysis: It's crucial to consider the return on investment when choosing a college. This includes evaluating the cost of the college and the potential earnings from the chosen field of study. College Experience: Factors like mentorship, faculty engagement, and opportunities for applying classroom learning outside the classroom contribute more to future success than the type of college attended. Some rumors about the costs of college are true. For example, some colleges this year will establish record highs in tuition and fees. But does that mean you can trust everything you've heard? Amy and Mike invited educational consultant Ann Garcia to bust some pervasive myths about how to pay for college. What are five myths that are busted in this episode? Myth #1: We're not poor and our student isn't an athlete, so we're stuck paying full price for college. Myth #2: I have a 4.6 GPA so I will get merit scholarships wherever I apply.  Myth #3: My Student Aid Index/EFC is what it will cost me to go to college.  Myth #4: Full pay students shouldn't bother filing the FAFSA. Myth #5: We shouldn't save for college because we will get more financial aid if we don't. MEET OUR GUEST Ann Garcia has helped thousands of families save millions of dollars on college. #90: It's back to school season, and that means it's also the time of year for high school seniors to start agonizing over college applications.Applying to college is an anxiety-filled rite of passage for high school seniors, but it's often just as anxiety-inducing for parents who bang their heads on how to pay for it.That's because paying for college is, for many families, the biggest single expense they'll have for their child. It's also often the second biggest life expense a family will incur, right behind buying a home. Paying for college is like buying a Tesla Model Y and giving it away. Every year, for four years. So this week, I chat with my friend Ann Garcia about how to pay for college. She just wrote a new book on this topic, which we discuss in detail, along with important new updates to the federal financial aid process (FAFSA) + key things to know about 529 plan rules. We discuss:Why Ann decided to write this book now, what makes it differentThe mind-boggling cost of college today; forecasted cost in 15 yearsWhy college costs so much now, what's driven up the cost in recent decadesGoals that colleges are trying to accomplish with their financial aid awardsThings parents should do to prepare their child and finances for the cost of college from birth to high schoolWhy it's important for your child to do the official campus tour for colleges they're interested inRecent key changes and updates to the FAFSA processDifference between 529 savings plans vs. pre-paid tuition plans vs. Private College 529Mechanics of 529s: roll-over-ability, qualified expenses, taxes & penalties for non-qualified expenses, how scholarships are handled, changing beneficiariesCheck it out here:https://hackyourwealth.com/how-to-pay-for-collegeHave you been through (or will soon go through) the college financial aid process? Summary: Student debt is higher than ever. Many young adults applying for universities, scholarships, and student loans don't always know what they're getting into in terms of financial commitment. Here to talk about this is Ann Garcia, who recently wrote a book called How to Pay for College. Ann stresses that a great education can come from universities that aren't as costly or exclusive, and we discuss multiple tips for saving money when preparing to apply for college. Tune in for more amazing insight from Ann, and be sure to check out the links below if you want to purchase her book or browse her online resources. Highlights: -There is over a trillion dollars in student loan debt -It's important for students to understand the reverse mortgage they are taking out when they enroll in an institution -If you're signing up for six figures worth of college debt, it's important to look at the return on this investment -The collateral is the student's future -People often equate cost and exclusivity with quality, assuming that only the most high caliber universities produce the most successful people -When Rhodes scholars are announced, more than half of them usually come from public universities with higher acceptance rates -The factor that will really impact a young adult's life is the amount of debt that they face after they complete their degree -Transferring institutions and spending more years enrolled can add on to your debt immensely -It's good to talk with your children about how to set up savings and grow them over time -You can often save money by taking Advanced Placement or IB courses during your high school career, or enrolling in prerequisite courses at a local community college -It is important to keep in mind, however, that not all universities accept these courses. Taking these classes needs to be part of your research on what university to attend -It's also crucial to focus on having a high GPA; if you're going to take AP or IB courses, make sure that you will still be able to perform well in these classes -Dual enrollment is also a great option that many schools offer; you can experience the four year college experience without the high price tag -What you see on your FAFSA is not necessarily what college will cost you in total -Students whose families that have saved some money for their education are more likely to graduate -Read the fine print on your financial aid letter Useful Links: Financial Survival Network How to Pay for College Ann Garcia's Book

Student loan forgiveness is a hot topic, but not a new one. Neither is the idea of free college. Many people with young kids think they don't need to bother saving for college because it will be free by the  time their kids go. That's probably a mistake, says Ann Garcia, Partner with Independent Progressive Advisors – a fee-only  registered investment advisor – and writer of The College Financial Lady blog.“While I do hope it happens, free college is limited to tuition, to public colleges and will be based on income," - AnnYou can find show notes and other information at CarsonGroup.com/Framework.

Communities leaders and  nonprofits have  provided advocacy, support  and services to our most vulnerable communities before and during the pandemic. We have been proud to share the stories of these individuals, many who experienced poverty and discrimination at a young age and were determined to change the world around them by creating organizations to provide services to thousands of families around the country.Health Care is a broad field and encompasses the needs of individuals beyond a clinic or hospital; it includes ensuring healthy diets, affordable housing, good paying jobs, clean air and water, and sustainable environments. The Latino/Latinx communities have been significantly impacted by Covid-19 and community organizations and leaders have worked tremendously hard to save lives and to protect and promote health to hundreds of thousands around the country. We honor our workers, our organizations, and our community leaders in their dedicated efforts to keep our communities thriving.
