POPULARITY
In a Presidential race with two leading candidates who are broadly unpopular, any small perceived edge can make a tremendous difference. According to Clare Malone, more and more people will have their judgments formed by memes—visual jokes about the candidates floating on social media. Republican memes capitalize on widespread discomfort with President Biden's age, by highlighting his stumbles, verbal or otherwise. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is a master of turning bad press to his advantage: he propagated his own mug shot on social media, feeding his outlaw image. Malone says that conservatives also have a leg up here because their beliefs suit the medium. “The right wing can ‘go there'—they can say the thing everyone thinks, but doesn't actually say out loud.” Now the partisan fight on social media has roped in a relatively innocent bystander, Taylor Swift. The pop star, who has endorsed Biden in the past, and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, have been labeled a “psy op” by right-wingers online. “My theory about American politics, especially in the past decade, is basically none of it's really policy,” Malone argues. “It's all political pheromones.” Plus, Michelle Zauner, the front woman for the indie band Japanese Breakfast, talks about her memoir, “Crying in H Mart,” with The New Yorker's Hua Hsu, author of “Stay True.”

our un/adaptable module continues with crying in h mart by michelle zauner, which also marks our first foray into nonfiction. joey is joined once again by a guy named gary, who shares a plea from shreds and expresses a hatred for a specific pronunciation of a particular word. we talk about whether or not you need to know a lot about korean food to appreciate this book, lament not having a food/cooking connection with people close to us (which seems very nice), and compare the food in america to the food around the world. joey recalls axe bodyspray. gary dunks on joey (in an unrelated incident). we lose the premise of the discussion, spend a lot of time talking about food, and break down how weird the module is turning out. egg compliments michelle zauner's reading of the audiobook. we count down to our next state module. gary says goodbye to cormac mccarthy. reading list for season five the zone of interest by martin amis underworld by don delillo eileen by ottessa moshfegh speedboat by renata adler memory by donald westlake blood and guts in high school by kathy acker project hail mary by andy weir the raw shark texts by steven hall crying in h mart by michelle zauner wittgenstein's mistress by david markson nightbitch by rachel yoder infinite jest by david foster wallace
You guys. You must tune in to find out why Zauner is worth all the hype. If you're in the mood for a memoir, and you like cool people and excellent prose, join Kimberly to see why H-Mart is moving, engaging and frankly delicious.
In Part 2, Kimberly discusses the prose, the limits of memoir, structure, and figurative language.
In the final part, Kimberly discusses the issues of race, the use of the Korean language, and the close of the novel.
Kimberly will share whether you should—or should not—dig into this memoir. She'll treat you to a snippet of the prose to give you a sense, but for a deeper analysis, check out the lecture.

From the Radio Times archive, we revisit Marty Moss-Coane's interview with Japanese Breakfast's Michelle Zauner on her musical talent and memoir, Crying in H Mart.
You may know Michelle Zauner from her Grammy-nominated musical act Japanese Breakfast or New York Times best-selling memoir "Crying in H Mart," but before all that she was just a kid who loved Sailor Moon. Michelle dropped by the pod this week to talk about watching and rewatching her favorite childhood VHS tapes, taking guitar lessons in the world's most corporate setting and the lessons she learned growing up about dining etiquette. Along the way Michelle helps Jonah and Vanessa call out their middle school music teacher for not lightening up and letting Jonah listen to Metallica in class, the three of us discuss the green room cheese plate situation for Japanese Breakfast's performance on this year's SNL season finale. As if that weren't enough, we also introduce a BRAND NEW SEGMENT called "Legit Moan Or Unnecessary Groan" that is kind of difficult to explain but should not be missed and sees us tackling the legacy of Crankshaft, Lawrence Welk and Giant Eagle supermarket's controversial stocking decisions. EPISODE NOTE: we accidentally say the Silent Generation came before the Greatest Greatest Generation when it's actually the other way around and we apologize for the mix-up, but honestly don't focus on that, Boomer. Our connections to books can be deeply personal. We cling to the characters that feel like friends, or reflect pieces of ourselves. But how do you translate your reading experience and the connections you feel with a book into music?
Irish writer Lisa Harding makes her American literary debut with the highly acclaimed novel, “Bright Burning Things.” Harding writes an emotionally powerful story of Sonya, an actress and single mother who is spiraling out of control, battling alcoholism and trauma. Her four-year-old son, Tommy, is simultaneously Sonya's lifeline and her prison as the pressures of motherhood push her to her limits. The child is heartbreakingly saddled with playing the role of adult, adoring his mother, and anxiously navigating his unstable environment. Lisa joined the podcast from Dublin to talk about this emotionally raw story: her desire to tell a story of addiction authentically, her reaction to both the success of the book and reader reaction who found it too difficult. Formerly a professional actress, Lisa also tells Olivia about her experience recording the audiobook and what fueled the most stunning moments of her performance. After the author interview, Olivia and Margaret discuss “Crying In H Mart” by Michelle Zauner and Rebecca Serle's “One Italian Summer.” “Bright Burning Things” is available in hardcover from HarperVia.

Today’s Talkhouse podcast started with a little bit of serendipity in the form of album release dates: Both of our guests, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast and producer/musician/former Vampire Weekend guy Rostam, have excellent records coming out on June 4. They’re also fans of each other’s work, so we figured it made plenty of sense to put them together. Zauner’s album, her third under the Japanese Breakfast name, is called Jubilee, and as you’ll hear in this conversation, it took a deliberate turn toward slightly happier themes than her first two. It comes hot on the heels of Zauner’s first book, a heartbreaking memoir called Crying In H Mart, that deals with her mother’s death—also a theme in her early music—and food, lots of food. It’s a really touching read, and an ideal companion to her musical catalog, which grew in really compelling ways with Jubilee. Rostam is best known as a founding member of Vampire Weekend, and even though he officially left the band a few years ago, he still contributes some songwriting and production work. He’s kept plenty busy otherwise, producing records and writing songs with an incredible array of other artists, from Hamilton Leithauser to HAIM to Clairo. His first proper solo album is the gentle, string-filled, fantastic Half-Light, which came out in 2017, and now he’s releasing Changephobia, which as you’ll hear ditches the string section and brings in a sax, among other things. These two jump right into a conversation that flits around from silly to deep: On one hand, they talk about childhood loves of chess and fencing and the importance of song five on an album. On the other, Zauner gets rightfully annoyed at interview questions she gets that other people don’t, and Rostam talks about being Persian in a band that was sometimes pegged as particularly white. It’s a funny, smart chat. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan. The Talkhouse theme was composed and performed by The Range.

H Mart is a supermarket chain specializing in Asian foods. It’s also where Michelle Zauner begins her new memoir, writing, “you’ll likely find me… sobbing near the dry goods, asking myself, Am I even Korean anymore if there’s no one left to call and ask which brand of seaweed we used to buy?” “Crying in H Mart” analyzes Zauner’s relationship with her late mother and their shared Korean heritage through meticulously described meals — like the soybean paste stew doenjang jjigae and chonggak (“ponytail” radish) kimchi —and the contexts in which they were eaten. We’ll talk with Zauner about processing her grief in both her memoir and music as the artist Japanese Breakfast, as well as her art’s evolution in anticipation of her upcoming album, Jubilee.
