Death Comes for Texas Dick: A Frontier Tale of Justice and Revenge

Send us a textStep back in time to autumn 1877, where the whispers of history echo beneath the branches of an oak tree at Sawlog Creek. Frank Buskirk and his fellow drovers have just completed their cattle drive from Texas, setting up camp near Dodge City when a stranger named Bob Shaw rides into their midst. What begins as a chilling campfire tale about two men—one guilty, one innocent—hanged from the very oak tree above their heads, becomes a haunting prelude to violence that will soon unfold.Shaw's story of frontier justice gone wrong serves as a dark foreshadowing when the cowboys venture into Dodge City the following day. Inside the bustling Lone Star Saloon, past grievances collide with present tensions as Shaw confronts Texas Dick in a display of frontier fury that erupts into a shootout. Deputy Marshal Ed Masterson intervenes, but not before bullets fly and blood is spilled, leaving multiple men wounded and forever changed by the encounter.Through Buskirk's firsthand account, we witness not only the violent reality of Western life but also how these stories were recorded and sometimes distorted in the pages of frontier newspapers. The Dodge City Times reports the incident with errors and omissions, highlighting the gap between lived experience and published history—a reminder that the Wild West we think we know may be built on incomplete truths. This gripping narrative excavates the complex nature of frontier justice, the bonds formed between men on cattle drives, and the thin line between order and chaos in places where law was still taking root. Beyond the gunsmoke and bloodshed lies a meditation on how stories shape our understanding of history and ourselves.Ready to dive deeper into authentic tales from America's frontier? Who Goes Here? by Bob Shaw is a quirky Sci-Fi adventure. Our protagonist, Warren Peace (yes, Warren Peace!) awakens in a doctor's office with literally no memory of who he is, why he's there, or anything about himself. The memory erasure is a "perk" of having enlisted in the Space Legion. Warren quickly realizes that the only way to survive is to regain his lost memory and flee the Legion. It's a fun tale, with a number of surprises and an unexpectedly complex plot. A favorite of Tom's, Tony had never heard of it before. (Original Airdate - October 9th, 2019) A Bug's Life is a 1998 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures as its second feature-length film, following Toy Story (1995). Directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Andrew Stanton from a screenplay written by Stanton, Donald McEnery and Bob Shaw and a story conceived by Lasseter, Stanton and Joe Ranft, the film stars the voices of Dave Foley, Kevin Spacey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In the film, a misfit ant named Flik, looks for "tough warriors" to save his ant colony from a protection racket run by a gang of grasshoppers. Unfortunately, the "warriors" he brings back turn out to be an inept troupe of Circus Bugs. The film's plot was initially inspired by Aesop's fable The Ant and the Grasshopper.[3][4] Production on A Bug's Life began shortly after the release of Toy Story in 1995. The ants in the film were redesigned to be more appealing, and Pixar's animation unit employed technical innovations in computer animation. Randy Newman composed the music for the film. During production, a controversial public feud erupted between Steve Jobs and Lasseter of Pixar and DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg due to the parallel production of his similar film Antz, which was released the same year. The film was released worldwide on November 20, 1998, received positive reviews and became a commercial success, having grossed $363 million at the box office. It was the first film to be digitally transferred frame-by-frame and released on DVD, and has been released multiple times on home video. POEM-- "What is the meaning of A Bug's Life? Is it working hard or avoiding strife? Flick lives his on the edge of a scythe while trying to impress and gain a princess wife." -Spro LIMERICK-- "There once was an ant named Flick Conformity, it made him so sick So, he took a stand with his feet in the sand And told the grasshoppers just what they could stick [up their asses.]" -MC

After four years in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam era, Bob Shaw met his wife Cheryl while working for a college ministry. They started a family and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Bob entered the world of recreational vehicle sales and service. After eight years with Beaver Coach – which brought him to Bend - a more serious pursuit of a career, not just a job, began. Bob had been a public speaker for years and secretly hoped for a job where he could speak for a living. A unique chain of events carried him back to college at COCC and a job as a waiter in a casual fine-dining restaurant at the age of 45. He was then introduced to working as talent in commercials by a co-worker that was doing the same. A couple of years of making commercials opened the door for a successful audition as the weathercaster on the live morning news program. A short while later, Bob transferred to Mississippi State University, completed a meteorology training, and is now celebrating years “in the business” and on NewsChannel 21 at Sunrise. Viewers will be sad to know that Bob is retiring this summer, and so we just had to have him on the program. In this edition of Bend Don't Break we talk about his favorite parts about doing weather, where he got his slogan "Have a Sparkling Day," and more.

Drew started learning carving at age 13, learning from archeologist Bob Shaw, printmaker Joe Senungetuk, and contemporary Athabascan mask-maker, Kathleen Carlo. As Drew practiced his craft and developed his own style, he also studied the craftsmanship of works by master carvers and spent many hours comparing others works with his own designs and process, searching for his own niche. He applied research to his carvings, using trial & error to grow his work into what it is today. Drew focuses on how masks were originally used by Yup’ik people, for healing and telling stories of things unseen. Drew’s work incorporates healing practices of the Yup’ik people and religious icons of European Christianity. The artist hopes to encourage people to find healing in ways that bring about balance in much the same way he has used these practices to find balance in his own life.
