Talking Climate Across the Aisle with Kathleen Biggins, Founder of C-Change Conversations In this episode, we're joined by Kathleen Biggins, founder and president of C-Change Conversations, a nonprofit committed to fostering non-partisan, science-based conversations about climate change. Kathleen shares her journey from journalism and healthcare to climate communication and how she and her bipartisan team developed the acclaimed C-Change Primer—an accessible, apolitical introduction to climate science that's been presented to over 20,000 people across 32 states. We explore why bridging political divides is essential for meaningful climate action, how to talk about climate change around the kitchen table, and ways to engage skeptics using shared values like health, safety, and economic well-being. Kathleen also shares personal stories and examples from the Primer series that inspire understanding and action—even in the most polarized spaces. With a 90%+ consensus rate across audiences, C-Change proves that inclusive, solutions-oriented conversations can move the needle. This episode is a must-listen for anyone ready to talk climate without the conflict.

I know that I'm not alone in having regrets about my past. There are so many things I would've done differently if only I had known the tremendous impact on my future. Yet, I can't go back and change what I did or didn't do in the past. The painful reality for many of us is that we are still living with the consequences of past decisions. Even though we've learned to live with it—every now and then there's that sting in our memory when we could've made better choices. However, God doesn't want us to live in the past. He wants us to leave the past behind and move forward in His plan for our lives. For many of us this means that we need to make peace with our past mistakes and failures so we can be used of God in the future. How do we make PEACE with our past? P – Pray for God's forgiveness and intervention.“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) E – Expect God to be with you to deal with the consequences“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) A – Ask forgiveness of those you have offended or deceived.“So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24) C – Change our mindset to learn and grow from the lessons of our past.“Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.” (Romans 6:1) E – Entrust our destiny to God for a better future and hope.“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Prayer Dear Lord, I surrender my past to You knowing that there may be consequences. However, I ask for Your strength to do what is right moving forward. In Jesus' name, amen.

IPA can be a whole lot of things, but when we were cutting our teeth on hoppy beers, the West Coast style dominated. Appreciation of the style never really died off, but it's regaining a bit of ground on the still more-popular hazy IPAs. So we turn to the actual source - the West Coast - for five beers that are somewhat varied in their interpretation. And because we love this style so much, it doesn't take us long to have too good of a time. Also, we deem 90s music safe for professional development meetings with some caveats; we motion for a “C” Change; and there's an almost unhealthy amount of beer nostalgia to wash it all down.  Beers Reviewed Pure Project Brewing (San Diego, CA) - Pure West AleSmith Brewing Company (San Diego, CA) - IPA The Lost Abbey (Vista, CA) - The Right Side of Happiness Beachwood Brewing (Huntington Beach, CA) - Citraholic Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - Easy Lift

BACON Adaptability!

BACON BITS with Master Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2023 55:44

Adaptability is your Happiness Superpower! At its core, adaptability is about figuring out how to make the best of a situation, even when circumstances change unexpectedly. It can help you navigate any challenge that comes your way. When you're adaptable, you're not tied to a specific outcome, and that means you're less likely to be disappointed or frustrated when things don't go your way. Instead, you'll be able to shift your focus and energy towards finding a new solution or opportunity, and that can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment. ON THE JOB: One of the most significant benefits of being adaptable is that it can help you thrive in the workplace. At work, things move fast, they change in an instant, and those who are adaptable are often the ones who succeed. Being adaptable means that you're open to new ideas and ways of doing things, which is essential in industries that are constantly evolving (and which industries aren't?) It also means that you're better equipped to handle unexpected challenges or setbacks, which is an invaluable trait in any job. IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS: So, why is adaptability so important? Well, let's think about it. If you're in a relationship with someone else, you're bound to have disagreements and conflicts from time to time. No two people are exactly the same. And if you're not willing to be flexible and open-minded, those conflicts can easily turn into full-blown arguments or even breakups. On the other hand, if you're able to adapt and adjust your perspective, you'll be much more likely to find common ground and work through your issues together. Like any skill, adaptability can be cultivated with practice. Here are a few tips on how to develop your adaptability: B - Build your resilience: Resilience is about bouncing back from setbacks, and it's a critical component of adaptability. A - Adopt a Growth Mindset: Instead of thinking of challenges as barriers, try to see them as opportunities to learn and grow. C - Change can be scary, embrace it! It can be an opportunity to try something new and different. O - Open-mindedness: Being an out-of-the-box thinker means being open to new ideas and ways of thinking. N – Now, Let Go! Letting go of your attachment to specific outcomes can free you up to explore new possibilities. Being adaptable is more than just a skill; it's a mindset. The ability to pivot and shift focus when things don't go according to plan is essential for happiness and success in both your personal and professional life. Cultivating adaptability is a lifelong practice, but by adopting a growth mindset, embracing change, and building your resilience, you'll be well on your way to becoming more adaptable and, in turn, happier. So, the next time you're faced with an unexpected challenge, take a deep breath, and remember that adaptability is your secret weapon and your superpower. Life can often seem tedious and uneventful, and it's easy to get caught up in the same old routine day after day. But boredom is beneficial; or at least, it can be. Boredom usually refers to trying and failing to find stimulation. But sometimes it can lead to just giving up. If we view this “failing to find stimulation” as a learning experience we can use boredom to become more productive, creative, and self-aware. If we identify that boredom is leading to great despair or a longing to quit, we can consider this the first steps toward turning it around. So, let's learn to pay attention to our boredom, and even set aside time for boredom, and maybe, just maybe, it will lead to a happier life. The Benefits of Boredom B - Boredom can be a beneficial way to allow your brain to relax, recharge, and rewire. A - Anticipate future goals with daydreaming to become more focused in the future. C - Creativity strikes in the shower, driving, wandering, and wondering. O - Optimize your days by setting time aside to do nothing. Time to Recharge Calibration Boredom – Unhappy because you are waiting for something to do. Common when performing repetitive tasks. Indifferent Boredom – Calm, relaxed, and withdrawn. Searching Boredom – Restless because you are looking but can't find anything to do. Warning Sign Reactant Boredom – Frustrated because you can't escape. Apathetic Boredom – Unhappy because you feel helpless and without drive. How to respond to boredom B - Be Mindful. Learn to identify your specific type of boredom and your response to it. A - Accept boredom as a benefit. Use it for self-improvement. C - Change your pattern to snap out of boredom. Shake it up. O - Outside your comfort zone is never boring. Do something different and daring. N - Nourish yourself by reading, meditating, or journaling. Not boring to you. Unplug from the world and embrace boredom. Elliot Barnett shared some fantastic insights about the root of all conflict. Part of the conversation was around our subjective realities. I wanted to take this a step further and unpack bias as it relates to the utility of micro-aggressions. I refer to paradigm blindness in this episode. I have since re-framed that ableist language as Fixed Paradigm Perspective. Although I didn't make that distinction in this episode, moving forward I will be referring to FPP or Fixed Paradigm Perspective in all of my content. A small, two-person airplane with engine trouble lands safely on an adjacent highway. As it's making its way to the shoulder, a motorist slams into the plane. When the police arrive and question the driver, they are deeply confused and honestly report, "I didn't see the plane". How can that possibly be?  I'll explain all this and more on this episode of the C-Change show. You can take the implicit bias assessment I mention in the episode, RIGHT HERE.If you would like to bring a bias training to your organization, you can reach me here: cultureworks@maurabarclay.comThanks for listening! C-Change Show- Changing Business Culture for GOOD

"C-CHANGE SHOW - Changing  Business Culture for GOOD."Welcome to the C-Change Show!Since the Great Resignation, culture has become paramount in recruiting and retaining top talent. Fairness and equity have become deal breakers for many job seekers. As a culture consultant, Change Management Specialist and Talent Optimization Partner with Predictive Index, I decided to do this show because I started to meet CEO's and Founders that were… well, “white guys” that recognized that their homogenized leadership teams were leaving them blind Two risks that could only be seen from different points of view and different life experiences. They figured out how to diversify their top leadership teams. These guys are getting it right, even 4xing their annual revenue. I know there are a lot of other white guys out there who see the limitations of homogenized leadership teams, but they're just not sure how to step into a new way of thinking or help their executive teams see the financial benefits of inclusion.I wanted to celebrate and amplify these self-described “rich white guys” who have figured it out and want to help other men do the same. Although you will be hearing predominantly from white male senior leaders, there will also be plenty of perspective from female and black CEO's, executives and business leaders who offer their unique strategies and solutions.Join me every week where we will get into how the sausage is made, because when DEI is done right, it ain't no Kumbaya situation – it's messy and awkward and yet these emotional intelligence ninjas are getting it done.I have a no judgement, no blame, no shame policy here. The interviews are candid and entertaining and sometimes they can get a little raw so be fair warned, the language can get salty. If a shitshow is offensive to you, this is not your podcast : )Please help me spread the word by subscribing and sharing!  Let's dive into the C-Change!

He also doesn’t mince words about the disappointing performance of the current Celtics, labeling them “artistically annoying” to watch. Gasper and Ryan discuss what the future looks like for Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Marcus Smart in green. Ryan also weighs in on Tom Brady's return to Foxborough and the Brady vs. Belichick debate. Producer Ellen Fleming jumps in to revisit Ryan’s time working at WCVB and wonders if Gasper is just copying Ryan’s career path completely.     Email the Take 5 podcast at Take5@WCVB.com   Follow Chris Gasper and WCVB on Twitter @cgasper & @WCVB Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify Podcasts Stitcher Podbean Pandora

In this podcast I answer the same questions I asked three different guests the last three sessions. This is all around how I lead and make decisions in the midst of uncertainty. Make sure you make the most of some of this learning by joining us at the Leadership Transformation Workshop online with Ford Taylor, March 25-26. Find out more here. Here's the questions: 1. What is your leadership role/responsibility? I am a husband and father of four young adults.  I lead Heaven in Business - a ministry that operates like a business but under the non-profit ownership structure of a church. I am responsible to lead the vision and team, generate the revenue, steward the resources... plus I am part of a larger organization... plus that organization has influence globally. We help you partner with God at work and engage in the wellbeing of the city you serve. We do that through conferences, retreats and a membership platform. In addition I lead Authentic Solutions which is a business I started last year to help you and your business gain clarity for what's next and the courage to do it - through courses, coaching and mastermind groups.   2. What has been the hardest decision recently you have had to make? A) Stay home. No travel. Working from home. We chose as a family to follow the CDC guidelines and only do essential meetings in person. This is primarily to protect the wellbeing of one of my children who has vulnerable health and also what we believed was most responsible as a community leader. B) Let go staff. We have dropped from five employees to one. Telling someone their income is halving or ending is difficult. C) Change/delay events that significantly affect my budget.   3. How did you make it? Spoke to my wife and kids. Heard from God Did the numbers. Prayed. Spoke to advisor. Spoke with staff. Wrestled internally!    4. What do you do when there is great uncertainty, no perfect answer, things you need to decide, and God is silent about specifics? Get alone. I love to run or hike up behind my house. When I get up a hill I can physically see further. It's the same mentally - clear's my head, helps my perspective. Advisors (starting with my wife Janine who has been my best coach!) Conviction. Protect your conscience above all else. Follow your conviction. Listen to that still, small voice. If you have hesitation, LISTEN. Take little steps. What could I test? What small cuts could I make today so I don't have to make drastic cuts in a month? Do the numbers. Budget. Analyze. Do sensitivity analysis: "What if this factor changed by 25%? What if the timing was delayed by 25%....?"   5. Have you gotten decisions wrong? How do you lead knowing you won’t be right all the time and people/outcomes can be brutal? Delayed letting someone go. Cost them and cost me AND it cost the team. Delayed confronting someone. Cost them and cost me. I cannot afford NOT to say something.   6. How do you overcome fear of failure or what people will say? Ford Taylor (see Transformational Leadership Course and book Relactional Leadership) processes are helping significantly. I've been meeting with a qualified marriage and family therapist almost weekly for the last year. That decision in hindsight was GENIUS. She has been really helpful navigating head trash, emotional upheaval and healthy boundaries. Get used to it. Nobody is perfect. We are all doing our best. Get more anchored in who I am in God.   7. How do you stay humble and not hard-hearted in most of adversity and/or injustice? Forgiveness: Self AND others. "Father forgive them for they don't know what they are doing." Reading Word daily, reading other books - Humility by RT Kendall Grattitude.

C and UNIX are at the root of modern computing. Many of the languages we’ve covered this season are related to or at least influenced by C. But C and UNIX only happened because a few developers at Bell Labs created both as a skunkworks project. Bell Labs was a mid-twentieth century center for innovation. Jon Gertner describes it as an “idea factory.” One of their biggest projects in the 1960s was helping build a time-sharing operating system called Multics. Dr. Joy Lisi Rankin explains the hype around time-sharing at the time—it was described as potentially making computing accessible as a public utility. Large teams devoted years of effort to build Multics—and it wasn’t what they had hoped for. Bell Labs officially moved away from time-sharing in 1969. But as Andrew Tanenbaum recounts, a small team of heroes pushed on anyways. C and UNIX were the result. Little did they know how much their work would shape the course of technology. That's all for Season 3. Ray Hoffman introduces the guest for this episode. John Byrne and Ray Hoffman have known each other for so long that they refer to each other as old friends. John is one of the most significant business journalists of his generation, having written over two dozen cover stories for Business Week, where eventually he became Executive Editor. He also was Editor-in-Chief of Fast Company and the author of some major business biographies of such figures as Jack Welch of GE and the Whiz Kids, including Robert McNamara, who reshaped Ford Motor Company and industrial America after World War II. He’s probably best known and most highly regarded as the go-to journalist on all matters relating to MBA programs and graduate business schools. That began at Business Week in 1988 when he compiled the first ever published ranking of graduate business school programs. Today, that continues within his second career as an entrepreneur. He’s Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of California-based C-Change Media, which operates five websites, including the number-one source for information about MBA programs, Poets & Quants.Listen in to hear more of John’s journey from journalist to journalist-entrepreneur.   Key Takeaways: [:22] Ray Hoffman introduces John Byrne for this episode of This Is Capitalism.[1:41] Did John imagine he would always be a professional journalist for a major publication? John describes the magazine publishing environment of Business Week twenty years ago and how he loved it. Then came the internet. [2:43] Business Week went online for the first time in 1994. AOL gave Business Week a $1 million contract for its content. John built out a Business Week community online. It was clear that this was something that was going to be a major change in the way we thought about what we create, how we create it, and how our audience interacts with it. [3:52] John created the first regularly-published ranking of MBA programs in the world in 1988. John was the Management Editor at Business Week at that time. He created the ranking to entice schools to seek to be included. It began as a biannual feature. [4:52] Companies had been complaining for years that MBA graduates had ‘quant’ skills but were challenged in the area of soft, people skills, which were not being taught in schools. [5:59] John’s idea was to hold schools accountable to their two primary audiences: the graduates and the people that hired them. [7:17] The business school issue was the best-selling cover of the year in 1988. It became immediately controversial and it gathered a lot of attention. John explains how the coverage expanded over the years to an online community in 1994. [7:51] Guidebooks were published by owner company McGraw-Hill. The guidebooks covered all aspects of MBA education and they became very big sellers. [8:11] Toward the end of John’s career at Business Week, John was the Editor-in-Chief of online operations. The average monthly unique visitor at Business Week looked at 1.8 pages; the average monthly unique visitor to the business school section looked at 58 pages. That was an eye-opener. [9:24] The first survey was a consumer satisfaction survey looking for opinions of graduates and the companies that hired them. John wanted it to be simple and pure. Business Week did not tell the survey respondents that it was for a ranking. [10:01] Now, when you survey alumni or companies, there is an inherent bias to the results because they know that the survey will impact how their school fares on the ranking. There is a lot of ‘cheerleading.’ [10:40] The survey was a true labor of love. Back in 1988, there was no internet or email. John collected the names of the graduates, printed out surveys from his home Mac and printer, and stuffed, labeled, licked, and sent out the envelopes. His family helped, in front of the TV watching Yankee games. It took a month of nights. [11:55] Ray notes that the first J.D. Power surveys were also sent from Power’s living room with the Power children helping. [12:17] John tells about the creation of the Poets & Quants website. Quants & Poets was a common term in business schools but unknown outside of the field. A good business school brings together Liberal Arts majors and Science majors, so they can build on each others’ strengths and minimize weaknesses. [13:49] When John thought about starting his company, he remembered this phrase. It is popular lingo to anyone in that world. About nine years ago, Bloomberg bought Business Week. It seemed like the right time for John to go on his own, online. [14:51] John looked at the importance of engagement with his audience. Online content provides a very different level of engagement. John knew there was a market for his planned business from the business school section of the Business Week website. [15:08] In John’s last few years at Business Week, the management did not understand all that John was doing. The average age of a Business Week reader was in the early fifties. John wanted to convert twenty-somethings who visited the website into readers. [16:13] John’s idea was to do a Huffington Post for business. He talked to the former publisher of Forbes.com and to Andy Serwer, who was then Managing Editor of Fortune. John suggested that the three of them get together to build up this company with 10 microsites around businesses that were under-covered in journalism. [17:41] The content would connect to a mega site that would cover business and the economy more broadly. They expected to rely heavily on contributions from consultants and professors with an editorial staff to create original content. Due to different individual financial goals of the group, it never happened. [18:34] Instead, John went to California and started his first website, contracting with a web developer and a designer to create the site, while John created content and enlisted freelancers to help generate more content. John wanted the site to live with a fairly significant amount of journalism in place. [19:13] In those days, Google might take months to recognize a site, but they were very quick to index social media like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook, so John created channels on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook using the new Poets & Quants logo before launching the site. He curated existing content to build an audience. [19:51] When the site was launched nine years ago, in August, they already had an audience from social media, with Google helping their SEO. [20:12] John did it on his own. John’s biggest investment was his time spent reporting and writing for several months to launch. John has not borrowed a dollar or taken a dollar of investment. He owns 100% of the company. [20:35] John has five websites run by 12 full-time employees with benefits and 401(k) plans. The main Poets & Quants site gets 35% of its traffic from outside of the United States. One of the sites is a global conference business. [21:06] John talks about the feature, The Best and the Brightest, about MBA graduates from various programs. John praises Senior Writer, Jeff Schmitt, who created the feature. John explains how they get nominations and pick the best and brightest. [22:29] The feature puts a face on the program and the school and shows the graduate’s motivation and their journey. It is meant to inspire and motivate others to get more education in a program that is right for them. [23:12] John brings up student debt and employment out of college. He discusses the value of MBAs and the market for them. John says 60% of MBAs don’t borrow for their degree because they get scholarship help but those that borrow can pay it off quickly. [24:37] People look at the tuition and fees and get sticker shock but, in some schools, 100% of the students are on scholarships; many are on full scholarships. [25:18] The average class at Harvard Business School is 930 students in a two-year program, so 1,860 are enrolled. 50% get scholarship help. The scholarships are based on need, not merit. Harvard spends $36 million a year on scholarships to 930 students. [26:17] Stanford gives the same level of support to their students, individually. Many other schools are in an “arms race” to give out scholarship money. The MBA is a flagship program. The higher they can rank, the better it reflects on the entire school. So schools are willing to use the MBA program as a loss leader for their other programs. [27:15] For MBA students who pay full price, John says they will have no problem paying off the loan quickly, with an employment sign-on bonus and a salary of $140K, depending on the field they choose. [28:44] In our strong economy with virtually full employment, applications to MBA programs have fallen sharply. Sticker price and a decline in international candidates into the U.S. are other reasons for the dropoff. The documentation to get a visa can be burdensome. Also, good online MBA programs have become very popular. [31:50] There are also specialized Master’s programs such as business analytics, supply chain management, HR management, healthcare administration, and others, that people are choosing right out of college. [32:21] Young people often choose a one-year specialized Master’s or an online MBA. [33:03] Across all the students, the discount on a Harvard Business School degree is 40%. Other schools vary. John cites major school offerings. [33:28] Destination websites with a lot of content and advertising support are like gorillas in a cage that need to be fed a lot of bananas every day. Content is very important. John says content is the campfire around which you gather an audience that has a conversation that creates unity. [34:29] The content has to be new, updated, creative, smart, insightful, valuable, and produced daily. If the content gets old, the traffic starts to fall. It’s a big, serious job. [35:40] In addition to writing every day, editing, and publishing, John also has a company to run with all the money and management concerns running a business involves. John recruits clients from the business school community. Right now, John is considering investing in a customized software platform to do one thing for the site. [37:03] Most of John’s life, he covered management and leadership. Now, he has a real P&L and it is work to get stuff done on a daily basis. [37:44] Ray and John discuss their years of study of Frank Sinatra the performer. Sinatra recorded commercially in seven decades. John compares the body of Sinatra’s music to the work of an entrepreneur. John thinks Sinatra’s biggest regret might be the years he didn’t record. John sees and contrasts three phases of Sinatra’s work. [40:07] John Byrne’s C-Change Media is capitalism — journalistic entrepreneurial capitalism. This is capitalism.   Mentioned in This Episode: Stephens.com John Byrne Business Week Fast Company Jack Welch The Whiz Kids Robert McNamara Ford Motor Company C-Change Media Poets & Quants AOL McGraw-Hill J.D. On Sourcing Matters episode 29 we welcome Gina McCarthy, Director of C-Change at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health. McCarthy has a background fighting for, and evolving practice & policy relating to the environment that is second to none!  A change-agent of positivity, Gina McCarthy has been a leading advocate for common sense strategies to protect public health and the environment for more than 30 years. She served under President Barack Obama as the 13th Administrator of the EPA from 2013–2017. Her tenure as EPA Administrator heralded a paradigm shift in national environmental policy, expressly linking it with global public health. Prior, during her career in Massachusetts, McCarthy advised five governors on environmental affairs, worked at the state and local levels on critical environmental issues, and helped coordinate policies on economic growth, energy, transportation, and the environment. In our 45 minute conversation we discuss both the need and opportunity to embrace sustainable best practice across the board.  We chat about the current landscape in DC. We discuss Scott Pruitt and his $43K soundproof phone booth, Trump’s perspective on the environment, climate change deniers, future food, agriculture and much more. Regarding her take on the political divide “We need to stop Washington from simply making climate change part of a partisan platform. Frankly, It has nothing to do with being a Republican or Democrat.  Absolutely nothing! If you’re a human being – you need to care about this, and you need to act.”  To do this we need to motivate, inspire and let people come to their own conclusions that this all matters.  “It’s a strategy that we need to stop scaring people, and start creating the pied piper effect. Play great music, and let people follow you.”   Gina explains that the EPA isn’t a birds & bunnies agency.  But, instead one focused on public health and national security. “People need to realize, climate isn’t about polar bears, it’s about their kids.”  McCarthy gets to the brass tacks of the movement, “The most important thing we can do is to realize the future is in our hands. We need to grab opportunities where they come, and be positive about it.”  She continues, “We need to put science to work, and explain it in terms that everyone can understand.”  McCarthy recently completed a few fellowships at Harvard. “I found the students to be incredibly exciting and engaging. They had a sense of social justice and equity that was just palpable. They just didn’t want to tolerate moving forward in a world that doesn’t recognize that science is real, that climate change is happening, that manmade emissions are causing it; and that we have to do something – not least of which is to more women into office!”   After her work in DC and finalizing the fellowship programs, Harvard’s Chan school of Public Health became the ideal venue to continue her transformative work in materializing the impacts of climate change and environmental pollution on public & personal health. The goal of the new C-Change center is to make sure science is driving actions continuously. She explains “The Dean wanted the science to be done not just well, but to be communicated well. To actually get into the hands of decision makers, and we can actually make a difference based on real facts on the ground.” McCarthy details, “The greatest opportunity we have to improve health in this century is embrace climate change as a public health issue. Climate change is opening our eyes to what we need to do to live sustainably. And, a low carbon future is something we should be running towards; investing in; talking about; getting exciting about!  I want people to know that climate change is perhaps the most direct threat they have today for their kid’s tomorrow. Taking action against climate change now is the greatest opportunity we have to chart a future that is sustainable.”   What we’re learning is: we do have great leaders, from all over, with diverse backgrounds who are ready for their time up at bat.  This has melded with a confluence of a citizen awakening, and what seems to be a zeitgeist of generation next where responsible action can be the permanency to set a proper course moving forward.  Recent defeats from this administration is a gut check; maybe a call to actions for us to gain some small wins, together, for greater good and stability.  So, whether instigating change from our dinner plate, in a lab or research center, via technology & innovation, or from some of the most prestigious institutions in the land – we’ve got this talent.  We need now to mobilize around small victories and milestones from the grass-roots.  It’s our time we get out and make a difference!   www.SourcingMatters.show

These chemicals can be found in 50% of hair care products marketed to black women, and just 7% of those marketed to white women -- and that may help explain why black women have a higher incidence of early menarche, preterm birth, diabetes, and other hormone-mediated illnesses.    Research is also emerging about how climate change can affect public health, with heat waves, wildfires, storms and pathogens, and communicating these complex links to the public can pose a challenge. But former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy was never one to back down: and she's taking on the twin foes of climate change and public health, with a new initiative at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health called "C-CHANGE" (the Center for Climate, Health and the Global Environment).   And since the world needs more carbon-free energy in order to prevent those public health consequences, nuclear energy is getting a PR boost. Some like that it does not emit greenhouse gases like the other baseload power sources of coal, oil and natural gas. Others worry about accidents and the lack of no long-term storage plan for radioactive spent fuel from conventional reactors. The State of New Jersey says the benefits outweigh the concerns and has decided to subsidize two aging nuclear plants that were scheduled to close.   Those stories and more, in this installment of Living on Earth from PRI.

This week the Harvard Chan School launched the new School-wide Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment (C-CHANGE). Under the leadership of Director Gina McCarthy, C-CHANGE will use science to drive action on climate change and improve public health. It's something McCarthy is familiar with; as former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, she led the Obama administration's efforts to combat climate change. In this week's episode we sit down with McCarthy for a passionate conversation about climate change, public health, and science. McCarthy explained why scientists need to change how they communicate about climate change to convey the human health effects, shared how we all can get involved to drive environmental changes at the local level, and weighed in on the Trump Administration’s attacks on science and the mission of the EPA.
