People usually talk about Berlin, London, New York when discussing electronic music hotspots, and Paris doesn't always get its due. Case in point? It produced Jennifer Cardini, one of the most distinctive DJs to to ever come out of the city. (She's lived in Germany for a while, but the point stands.) Her sound lands somewhere between disco, house and EBM, rooted in a groovy, post-modern chug. You'll hear nu-disco, industrial, techno and electro too, usually built around big hooks. It's a sound that is not only instantly recognizable, but instantly likable. As a producer, Cardini also deserves her flowers. She's been putting out records since the mid-'90s, and with her first label Correspondant, she's built up a rock-solid catalogue from artists like Fort Romeau, Man Power, Cormac and more. More recently she started the Dischi Autunno imprint, a place for more crossover-friendly music that indulges Cardini's tastes for all things melodic (and maybe a little goth). Cardini's RA Podcast is a beautiful summary of all these ideas and influences. It's hard and banging, sure, but also lithe and athletic. There are plenty of tracks with the surge of EBM or the stab of industrial. Lots of reverb. Decadent melodies undergirded by tough drum patterns. And it's paced as expertly as you'd expect from someone who's been DJing for over 30 years. Rather, it is named after the Italian chef, Caesar Cardini, who created this delectable salad after immigrating to the U.S. with his brother Alex and opening a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico (called Caesar's). This happened during the Prohibition in the U.S. in the 1920s, which is the reason that Cardini opened his restaurant in Mexico in the first place.  It was during the Fourth of July holiday rush in 1924, that Cardini's restaurant began to run out of supplies. Not wanting to disappoint a list of elite Hollywood clientele dining at his restaurant that day, Cardini rustled up what he could find in the way of a salad.  The salad became so populare that in 1948 The Cardini family patents the famous salad dressing.

Visitare Gerusalemme equivale a entrare nel cielo”, si legge in un trattato geografico del X-XI secolo. La città santa era il punto di arrivo di un viaggio: quello del popolo di Israele, in cerca della terra promessa, e dal Medioevo in avanti anche quello del pellegrinaggio cristiano. Ma è soprattutto un punto di partenza, il luogo da cui tutto è iniziato. Salomone costruisce il tempio sul monte del sacrificio di Abramo, che non è lontano dal Giardino dell'Eden, ovvero dall'inizio della storia del mondo. Lì, secondo la tradizione biblica, il dio impronunciabile degli Ebrei trova casa. È questa la prima delle Dimore di Dio descritte da Franco Cardini, professore emerito di storia medievale, nel libro pubblicato dalla casa editrice Il Mulino. «Il Tempio di Salomone è il modello archetipico delle cattedrali cristiane d'Oriente e d'Occidente», racconta Cardini in questo episodio. «Un modello senza il quale restano incomprensibili una quantità di “luoghi alti” della nostra civiltà».[ vai all'intervento completo]

«Dovette avviarsi molto presto, la tendenza a “situare” analiticamente i singoli luoghi che vengono ricordati nelle Scritture, e più precisamente nel Vangelo» dice il professor Franco Cardini. Gerusalemme e la Terra santa – i luoghi della permanenza terrena di Gesù Cristo – diventano la mappa della cristianità, mete da visitare e tappe del più importante pellegrinaggio cristiano. Sono antiche compagne e, per certi aspetti, anche e soprattutto efficaci maestre. Possono insegnarci il coraggio, la solidarietà, la prudenza, la prevenzione, l'igiene, e addirittura - paradossalmente - l'ottimismo. Possono stimolare l'arte, la musica, la fantasia. I am so very sad to report on the passing of yet another of the greats in our art. Johnny "The Great Tomsoni" Thompson was my guest on several episodes of the Magic Newswire's Spirit of Magic Podcast. This is one of my favorites and the earliest. Please listen and remember in his honor! Johnny was much more than an extremely well respected performer and one of the funniest magicians out there. He was also a much sought after magic consultant and worked with such performers as Lance Burton, Penn & Teller and Criss Angel. In the first interview below, Johnny talked about his career as well as his experiences with other performers including Herb Zarrow, Jay Marshall, Marshal Brodein, Francis Carlyle, Paul le Paul, Paul Rosini, Joe Bergen, Cardini, Channing Pollock, Carl Balentine, Al Koran, Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller.

After being treated for 2½ years for osteosarcoma, Maddie passed away on May 19, 2017 at the age of 15. Maddie was a student at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River. She touched so many lives with her loving, care-free spirit and witty attitude. Maddie had a radiant smile that would always light up a room. Her passion for dancing led her to Danceworks in Bristol, RI for 10 years where she was mesmerizing on stage. Maddie was also a highly-skilled cornhole player and participated in many tourneys throughout the area. Her prowess at “throwing bags” drew the admiration of all her competitors. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She developed a special friendship with Brock Holt and presented him with the Roberto Clemente nomination at the game last September. Krista had been Maddie's primary infusion nurse from her diagnosis until her death. They spent countless hours together in clinic during long infusions, multiple relapses and tough clinical decisions. Maddie was always happy to see everyone in the Jimmy Fund Clinic, who became her extended family. Krista says that Maddie was a beautiful person inside and out. Dawn says Krista was more than a nurse. She will never forget the last time Maddie had to receive chemotherapy. Maddie was so sad and started to cry.  Krista kissed the top of Maddie's head and walked away with tears in her eyes.  Maddie went through so much in the three years she was in treatment. She did it with a positive attitude and always had a smile on her face. Krista has been at Dana-Farber since 2000.  She became a nurse because her favorite aunt was a nurse. She has spent her whole nursing career as a pediatric oncology nurse and would not give it up for the world!  She loves working with kids and is inspired by their strength and resilience.Krista says that as a mother herself, she is in awe of parents like Dawn, who come to the Jimmy Fund Clinic with their sick children and keep a positive attitude and maintain a safe secure environment for their kids by establishing a trusting relationship with their nurses and care team members despite their own fears.. Krista has told Dawn many times that she and Steve did a wonderful job raising a beautiful young lady and they will do a wonderful job carrying on her memory.

Tony Curtis is our guest on this episode of the Magic Newswire "Spirit of Magic" podcast. Tony studied with George L Boston before starring in the 1953 film Houdini. Tony's enthusiasm for magic continued far beyond his role in the film. He was a frequent  participant  at  the  AMA's annual award banquets. In fact, he presented Cardini with the Masters Fellowship, the Academy of Magical Arts highest honor.  In spite of the fact that the film portrayed  a highly fictionalized account of Houdini's career, many still consider it to be one of the best "Houdini Films" yet to be made

We mix things up on this episode of This Week in Magic by inviting two totally different performers to join us on the podcast.  Doc Eason is one of the most expereinced bar magicians living today. He's performed in Snow Mass Colorado for more than 27 years, with a lengthy stint at John Denver's Tower Restaurant Magic Bar.  In addition, Doc was the recipient of the Academy of Magical Arts first every award for "Bar Magician of the Year"  in 2005. In 2008, they also named him Close-up Magician of the Year.   When he was 17, Levent was  awarded 1st Prize in the Stage Magic competition at the IBM National Convention. He never looked back, immediately taking a resort booking, performing on cruise ships and in theaters around the world. He is a noted creator of magic tricks and a magic lecturer as well as a vaudeville historian.  His most recent project is "Levent's Ultimate Guide to the Billiard Balls" in which he explores every aspect of this historic routine and recreates Cardini's famous presentation of the effect.
