Mark Taylor, the CTO and co-founder of Chorus, a 24-year-old traditional MSP with a strong Microsoft focus, provided a wealth of knowledge on this subject. He explained that Chorus has three core streams: traditional managed services, a Microsoft-focused Dynamics practice, and a security web practice that has been operating for about five years.    The discussion started with a focus on the evolving threat landscape over the past 18 months. Mark emphasized that security breaches can often be triggered by the simplest mistakes, such as leaving a back door open. MSPs are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals, making security a paramount concern for both MSPs and their clients.    Mark highlighted that, historically, businesses viewed security as locking the gates and fortifying their defenses. However, this approach is outdated. Even if you build strong walls, determined attackers will find a way in. Instead, the new perspective is to assume that they will get in eventually and focus on quickly detecting and responding to threats. This resilience-driven mindset is essential for protecting both MSPs and their clients.    When it comes to starting the journey into managed security services, Mark stressed the importance of implementing basic security hygiene effectively. Properly implemented Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a key component in reducing risks, with studies showing that 98% of risks can be mitigated through these basic measures. Additionally, Mark highlighted the shift from traditional antivirus solutions to Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) or Managed XDR (Extended Detection and Response) services, which provide more comprehensive threat detection and response capabilities.    Mark clarified that the term MSSP (Managed Security Service Provider) has evolved over time and is now broadly applicable to most MSPs. Even if MSPs are not offering full-blown 24/7 security operations centre (SOC) services, they are still engaging with security discussions and implementing essential security measures. It's a matter of varying degrees of specialization and service offerings.    The conversation then turned towards Chorus's journey in building its own Cyber Security Operations Center (CSOC). Mark explained that their decision to invest in a CSOC stemmed from the need to provide enhanced security services to their larger clients. They recognized the need for faster threat detection and containment, which is achievable with a dedicated CSOC.    Ian inquired about the different security layers within MSPs, including the help desk, the Network Operations Center (NOC), and the Security Operations Center (SOC). Mark clarified that the SOC primarily focuses on monitoring and responding to security threats, ensuring rapid detection and containment. While some MSPs choose to handle security alerts within their organization, others outsource these functions to specialized providers.    They also discussed the differences between Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and Managed Extended Detection and Response (MXDR). MDR initially focuses on protecting endpoints, whereas MXDR extends its scope to cover additional security measures, such as monitoring sign-in logs on domain controllers and analysing email traffic in greater detail. The choice between MDR and MXDR depends on the MSP's and clients' specific needs and risk profiles.    The conversation touched on the adoption of Microsoft's security solutions, with Mark highlighting the attractiveness of Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which includes Defender for Endpoint. Many clients already have these licenses and may opt to leverage Microsoft's security offerings, reducing the need for third-party solutions.    Finally, they delved into the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of cybersecurity. AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of security operations, providing quicker insights and decision-making capabilities. While AI enhances security measures, it is not a replacement for human expertise but rather a tool that supports and enhances the capabilities of security professionals.    In conclusion, this episode with Mark Taylor shed light on the evolving landscape of managed security services and the crucial role they play in safeguarding MSPs and their clients. Slack If you've heard of team chat, you've probably heard of them. IM, channels, video calls, integrations and bots for hundreds of third-party tools; Slack has it all. But the free plan limits you to 10 service integrations, so choose wisely. Microsoft Teams Initially an exclusive for businesses with Office 365 subscriptions, Microsoft Teams has since launched a free plan for small businesses. We love its innovative features such as inline translation for messages and the ability to record meetings with automatic transcriptions. Also a plus, its deep integrations with OneDrive and Office 365 services. Microsoft Team's free plan Up to 300 users Unlimited messages, channels, and search Unlimited audio and video meetings with up to 250 participants 10GB of team file storage + 2GB per user 140+ apps and service integrations For advanced collaboration features such as meeting recordings and automatic transcriptions, you'll need to pony up for an Office 365 subscription.  Office 365 Business Essentials costs $5 a user per month and the full-featured Office 365 Business Premium will set you back $12.50 a user per month.   MAIN THOUGHT 1. Check File Formats Producers: Be clear about what format you work with — bit rate, bit depth and file type. Musicians: If you don't know what the producer needs, don't be afraid to ask! They'll probably appreciate that you did. If you aren't sure how to calibrate those sorts of parameters in your DAW of choice, the producer will probably be able to guide you. (Hint, it usually just involves a couple of clicks in your DAW's “preferences” menu.) 2. Deliver Same-Length Consolidated Tracks Producers: When you send off files to your remote collaborators, the easiest thing to do is usually to provide a mix of the song with a couple of bars of silence at the top. If you want to go above and beyond, you can include a 2-bar count in. Musicians: When you prepare your takes to send off, it's usually easiest to make sure they're the same length as the mix you were tracking to. If there was silence at the top, leave that in your tracks. The producer should be able to import your tracks into the beginning of their session and start working with them right away. Preparing tracks in this way works more or less like printing stems. Cakewalk has this option and it's really easy! Please, whatever you do, don't send anybody a bunch of short files that have to be lined up manually. 3. Label Tracks Properly If someone hires you to play on their song and you send them back a bunch of files with names like “Audio02.0003,” I promise you they will never hire you again (especially if you also ignored my previous point). Give tracks names that illustrate what they are: “dark synth pad,” “bridge flute melody,” “backup vox 1a,” etc. Labeling tracks clearly is especially important when sharing instruments recorded with multiple mics, like a drum kit. Don't assume that a producer will be able to hear that “Drum 5” is a floor tom and “Drum 7” is an overhead. Give those tracks and files names that make it clear exactly what you're handing over. 4. Provide BPM, Charts, References & Mock-Ups This point goes out to producers specifically: the best way to get great takes from remote session players is to set them up to succeed. Find out what supplemental materials and information will help them the most and give it to them. Clearly labeling BPMs is a good first step, and if you're sending a temp mix for players to track to, including BPM somewhere in the file name is a good move. Some players may prefer having the song broken into multiple stems so they can build their own monitor mix. If so, ask them how they'd like those stems broken down. If you've made a mock-up of the part they're recording, they'll likely appreciate having that on a separate track that they can mute while recording. Many players will also appreciate getting some sort of written notation. Even if a full-on score isn't necessary, chord charts and notes on the structure of a song can be very helpful. Remember, every minute a session player spends trying to understand what you're asking from them is a minute they're not spending recording their parts. Make their lives easy and they'll repay the favor by giving you takes that you love. 5. Set Clear Expectations When I have someone record tracks for me remotely, I usually trust them to apply whatever processing they think helps make their instrument sound good. Some producers may prefer to get tracks bone dry. Some producers may want that screaming guitar solo you just recorded to come with a clean DI take to have as a backup. The point here is that everyone works differently, and it's never safe to assume that a collaborator will automatically know what you need from them. If it's unclear what a collaborator expects from you, there's no shame in checking in with them. Remember, it's much harder to get what you want if you never really ask for it! 6. Provide Alternate Takes This point goes out to musicians recording parts remotely: If a producer is giving you free reign to “do your thing” on their track, they'll probably appreciate having a few different versions to work with. A standard way of approaching this is to provide “mild, medium and spicy” takes that range from being more sparse to more adventurous and busy. The producer may have more specific ideas in mind though — a take with a swung feel, a take in a higher octave — so get clear on what they'd like to have from you. Keep in mind — providing lots of alternate takes doesn't get you off the hook of having to deliver files that can be organized easily. Be prepared to label the different takes in ways that make clear what they are, or to provide notes when you share files. 7. Record at a Healthy Level In the days when all recordings happened on analog tape, a producer's MO was usually to capture signal as hot as possible without clipping, so that it would sit above the noise floor introduced by all that analog gear. That hot signal would also benefit from some natural compression introduced by hitting the tape hard, and sweet saturation from almost everything in the chain. In the average home recording setup, though, we're more likely to run into a different set of issues. Most home studios now don't include any kind of tape setup, and the noise floor introduced by a buzzing refrigerator in the other room or a busy city street outside your window is only going to get louder as preamp gain goes up. And while vintage consoles often really shine when driven to the edge of the red, the preamps on a mid-shelf audio interface are more likely to introduce brittle, shrill distortion when cranked. I usually ask long-distance collaborators to record tracks with peaks around -12 dBFS. Signal at that level is loud enough to sit above most noise floor introduced by recording gear, but far enough from the ceiling that no distortion will be introduced by the preamp being used. 8. Leave in Some Noise There's some pretty sophisticated noise reduction software available these days, and chances are your producer has access to some of it. It can be tempting to want to clean up noise in dead spaces of a song, either by manually deleting spaces between phrases or using a gate. I do appreciate it when collaborators do some of that cleanup for me. In order to get the most out of noise reduction plugins like iZotope's RX suite, though, it's much easier to have a section of pure noise that the software's algorithms can “learn” in order to more fully remove it. As always, the safest move is to check in about what the producer prefers! For those of us who have only used our home setups to record demos, it can be daunting to have to record tracks that will go on someone's record. For producers who are used to sitting in a room with an artist while they record takes, it can be difficult to get what they're looking for without being able to give feedback in real-time. Fortunately, it's only getting easier to clear these sorts of hurdles, even if we all have to make some adjustments. Slack If you’ve heard of team chat, you’ve probably heard of them. IM, channels, video calls, integrations and bots for hundreds of third-party tools; Slack has it all. But the free plan limits you to 10 service integrations, so choose wisely. Slack’s free plan Unlimited users, messages, and channels Unlimited one-to-one voice and video calls  5GB storage for file sharing and 10K message history Up to 10 apps or service integrations For video conferencing (up to 15 participants) and guest accounts, you’ll need to upgrade to a Standard plan that costs $6.67 per user per month. Microsoft Teams Initially an exclusive for businesses with Office 365 subscriptions, Microsoft Teams has since launched a free plan for small businesses. We love its innovative features such as inline translation for messages and the ability to record meetings with automatic transcriptions. Also a plus, its deep integrations with OneDrive and Office 365 services. Microsoft Team’s free plan Up to 300 users Unlimited messages, channels, and search Unlimited audio and video meetings with up to 250 participants 10GB of team file storage + 2GB per user 140+ apps and service integrations For advanced collaboration features such as meeting recordings and automatic transcriptions, you’ll need to pony up for an Office 365 subscription.  Office 365 Business Essentials costs $5 a user per month and the full-featured Office 365 Business Premium will set you back $12.50 a user per month.   MAIN THOUGHT 1. Check File Formats Producers: Be clear about what format you work with — bit rate, bit depth and file type. Musicians: If you don’t know what the producer needs, don’t be afraid to ask! They’ll probably appreciate that you did. If you aren’t sure how to calibrate those sorts of parameters in your DAW of choice, the producer will probably be able to guide you. (Hint, it usually just involves a couple of clicks in your DAW’s “preferences” menu.) 2. Deliver Same-Length Consolidated Tracks Producers: When you send off files to your remote collaborators, the easiest thing to do is usually to provide a mix of the song with a couple of bars of silence at the top. If you want to go above and beyond, you can include a 2-bar count in. Musicians: When you prepare your takes to send off, it’s usually easiest to make sure they’re the same length as the mix you were tracking to. If there was silence at the top, leave that in your tracks. The producer should be able to import your tracks into the beginning of their session and start working with them right away. Preparing tracks in this way works more or less like printing stems. Cakewalk has this option and it’s really easy! Please, whatever you do, don’t send anybody a bunch of short files that have to be lined up manually. 3. Label Tracks Properly If someone hires you to play on their song and you send them back a bunch of files with names like “Audio02.0003,” I promise you they will never hire you again (especially if you also ignored my previous point). Give tracks names that illustrate what they are: “dark synth pad,” “bridge flute melody,” “backup vox 1a,” etc. Labeling tracks clearly is especially important when sharing instruments recorded with multiple mics, like a drum kit. Don’t assume that a producer will be able to hear that “Drum 5” is a floor tom and “Drum 7” is an overhead. Give those tracks and files names that make it clear exactly what you’re handing over. 4. Provide BPM, Charts, References & Mock-Ups This point goes out to producers specifically: the best way to get great takes from remote session players is to set them up to succeed. Find out what supplemental materials and information will help them the most and give it to them. Clearly labeling BPMs is a good first step, and if you’re sending a temp mix for players to track to, including BPM somewhere in the file name is a good move. Some players may prefer having the song broken into multiple stems so they can build their own monitor mix. If so, ask them how they’d like those stems broken down. If you’ve made a mock-up of the part they’re recording, they’ll likely appreciate having that on a separate track that they can mute while recording. Many players will also appreciate getting some sort of written notation. Even if a full-on score isn’t necessary, chord charts and notes on the structure of a song can be very helpful. Remember, every minute a session player spends trying to understand what you’re asking from them is a minute they’re not spending recording their parts. Make their lives easy and they’ll repay the favor by giving you takes that you love. 5. Set Clear Expectations When I have someone record tracks for me remotely, I usually trust them to apply whatever processing they think helps make their instrument sound good. Some producers may prefer to get tracks bone dry. Some producers may want that screaming guitar solo you just recorded to come with a clean DI take to have as a backup. The point here is that everyone works differently, and it’s never safe to assume that a collaborator will automatically know what you need from them. If it’s unclear what a collaborator expects from you, there’s no shame in checking in with them. Remember, it’s much harder to get what you want if you never really ask for it! 6. Provide Alternate Takes This point goes out to musicians recording parts remotely: If a producer is giving you free reign to “do your thing” on their track, they’ll probably appreciate having a few different versions to work with. A standard way of approaching this is to provide “mild, medium and spicy” takes that range from being more sparse to more adventurous and busy. The producer may have more specific ideas in mind though — a take with a swung feel, a take in a higher octave — so get clear on what they’d like to have from you. Keep in mind — providing lots of alternate takes doesn’t get you off the hook of having to deliver files that can be organized easily. Be prepared to label the different takes in ways that make clear what they are, or to provide notes when you share files. 7. Record at a Healthy Level In the days when all recordings happened on analog tape, a producer’s MO was usually to capture signal as hot as possible without clipping, so that it would sit above the noise floor introduced by all that analog gear. That hot signal would also benefit from some natural compression introduced by hitting the tape hard, and sweet saturation from almost everything in the chain. In the average home recording setup, though, we’re more likely to run into a different set of issues. Most home studios now don’t include any kind of tape setup, and the noise floor introduced by a buzzing refrigerator in the other room or a busy city street outside your window is only going to get louder as preamp gain goes up. And while vintage consoles often really shine when driven to the edge of the red, the preamps on a mid-shelf audio interface are more likely to introduce brittle, shrill distortion when cranked. I usually ask long-distance collaborators to record tracks with peaks around -12 dBFS. Signal at that level is loud enough to sit above most noise floor introduced by recording gear, but far enough from the ceiling that no distortion will be introduced by the preamp being used. 8. Leave in Some Noise There’s some pretty sophisticated noise reduction software available these days, and chances are your producer has access to some of it. It can be tempting to want to clean up noise in dead spaces of a song, either by manually deleting spaces between phrases or using a gate. I do appreciate it when collaborators do some of that cleanup for me. In order to get the most out of noise reduction plugins like iZotope’s RX suite, though, it’s much easier to have a section of pure noise that the software’s algorithms can “learn” in order to more fully remove it. As always, the safest move is to check in about what the producer prefers! For those of us who have only used our home setups to record demos, it can be daunting to have to record tracks that will go on someone’s record. For producers who are used to sitting in a room with an artist while they record takes, it can be difficult to get what they’re looking for without being able to give feedback in real-time. Fortunately, it’s only getting easier to clear these sorts of hurdles, even if we all have to make some adjustments. Hopefully, now you’ve got a sense of some big ways you can make long-distance collaborations go more smoothly. What other sorts of problems have you encountered with recording remotely? I said, hey, you, get off of my cloud. Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Yeah, yeah. So it goes without saying, we're gonna be talking a little bit about cloud today, and specifically, we're gonna debunk some cloud myths. So many people, "I came in, we've got clouds we're onto it. Yeah, pretty sweet man, got cloud, got cloud." Just this thing people have, they don't know ... it's like catching a cold. "I think I'm sick, maybe I'm sick. I'm not sure, maybe I've got over it, I don't even know." Learn more about moving your business to the cloud at dorksdelivered.com.au People get this thing in their head, "I've got cloud, yep, sweet." But no one knows what it is, or if they actually have cloud or not. Let's compare it to the sickness that then. So, if you're sick you're like, "Oh, I think I'm getting sick. Oh yeah, I'm sick. Oh, now I think I'm getting over it. Now I think I'm over it." When you go and you think you're gonna die, and you don't even know, maybe you do, maybe you will, you don't know how sick you're gonna get. But cloud is the same, people go, "I've got cloud," they don't know what it is. So we're gonna talk about these different cloud myths. When people say they've got cloud, all it means ... What cloud is, cloud is just your applications in a location that isn't within the physical location that you're at right now, in it's most simplistic terms. In a more complicated way, it can mean having your files in multiple other locations, that are not at the location that you're at now, and that can also be cloud. If you have a website, and you're operating a mobile business, or you have a website, and you don't have an office, or you have a website, and you have an office, and you don't have all of your machines on all the time and your website stays live, and you're paying a hosting provider, they're hosting the website, your website's not hosted with you, therefore, it is in the cloud. So, you've had things in the cloud for years, it's just a buzz term, cloud hadn't come about to tell you that you had them in there for years. Then people wanted to sell all this stuff, also the same stuff repackaged for a higher price, and so they started calling it cloud, and that's the short of it. Cloud can offer several advantages, when it comes to other things besides your website, though. You can host files through Box, OneDrive, Dropbox, and many others, that'll give you the ability to access your files remotely. Access your files when you're at home and away from the office, access your files on your computer, as well as on your phone. All these different file-based services store the files in a hosted solution called the cloud. That's all it is, it's a hosted solution called the cloud. So, now that we know what the cloud is, and now that we know what a hosted solution is, let's look at the differences. You know that you've now got your files in the cloud, and your website in the cloud, but you still don't have everything in the cloud. If you've got collaboration tools, such as the ones that come with Google Suites, that let you use Sheets and Docs, and everything else, in and online environment, then that is also your documents in the cloud. So we're a couple of steps closer to getting everything in the cloud. But that still doesn't mean your business is in the cloud. If you still have to sit in front of the same computer, with the desktop icons in the same locations, that does not mean that you are in the cloud. You still are reliant upon that computer with different things that are on that computer to work. If you're lucky enough to have set up your business, so that you can jump on at any internet café, and access absolutely everything to do with your business, it probably means that you have VDI, or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. If you've got Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, you may then have your desktop system in the cloud, which is awesome. So that means that from your mobile phone, and from any other computer around the world with the right authentication, you then have your desktop in the cloud. Your desktop in the cloud can then potentially communicate with Dropbox in the cloud, and communicate with your website in the cloud. Then you've got your desktop, your website and files in the cloud, but that doesn't mean everything's in the cloud. Yet still, it'd be fair to say that most of your infrastructure is, but if you still have a fax machine for whatever reason, and a VCR, for exactly the same reason you have a fax machine. But honestly, if you still have a fax machine that's not in the cloud, then you're not completely in the cloud. You need to use services that'll allow for you to have a fax machine in the cloud, and there's many out there, they only cost $5-$10 a month, and that'll then mean that your fax machine's in the cloud. So now your business has your fax machine, your desktop, your files, and your website, all in the cloud. How do you answer the phone at the moment? Yep, that's right, it might be through a corded phone, that's going through the wall, through a traditional PBX system, and if that is the case, then you're not in the cloud still. You need to get all of that stuff changed away and removed, and make sure that you're going with VoIP setups, or using IP PBX system, where everything to do with that is also in the cloud. If you've got all your phones in the cloud, and everything else to do with your desktop in the cloud, or you have everything coming through to your mobile phone, if you didn't wanna have it coming through to the desktop phone in the cloud, then you've got yet another thing, another element that's gone to the cloud. I haven't covered off on one of the most important ones, that everyone talks about, and you might have picked up on it, that's right, your emails. Your emails. Emails through Office 365, if you're on the business Office 365 plan, not the box you bought from JB Hi-Fi or Officeworks, the business Office 365 ... I don't know why Microsoft decided to make more than 20 products with very, very, similar names, just to confuse people. If you have Office 365 Business Premium, or Business Essentials, and you're in the cloud or hosted exchange, then you're in the cloud, as I just said then. That means your emails are then also in the cloud. You don't have to just settle with that, you can go with Google Suites and things like that for your emails as well. I personally have a preference towards Office 365, just from our clientele, but you do you. For the Office 365 stuff, that means your emails are also in the cloud. So, you've got everything in the cloud, what happens when someone posts something to you? Yeah, that's not in the cloud, that has not been resolved. If someone needs to post something to you, you have a physical address that people need to post it to. If you're trying to run a business that's in the cloud, the only reasons you'd really do that is to lower your capitol expenditure, to have a flexible office workspace, and to be able to go travelling, or be able to do things like that, where you're about to have a collaborative environment where everyone else can talk and work together, but not necessarily be working in the same physical location together. There is virtual office spaces. For this example, it would count as having something in the cloud, 'cause it's not stored with you on premise, and you're able to change the delivery of where it goes at will. You can get these fantastic office places in Brisbane, and they're not that expensive, and think of it like a PO Box, that when it gets delivered to that location, they then forward it on to wherever the most updated address is that you've got there. So now you've got all the infrastructure elements of your business in the cloud. Once you've got everything like that in the cloud, you wanna make sure that you're using tools that allow you to collaborate with your whole team, while in the cloud, while in a remote workspace, or maybe you still all come to the same physical workspace. For some reason you love greenhouse gas emissions and overheads with leases and bits and pieces. So, if that's your case, and that's you, that's cool. If that is everything that you're doing there, and you're still coming together, there's still a whiteboard there that you can work on, otherwise there's tools for that as well. There's project management solutions and everything else. But don't for one moment think, because you've got your files in the cloud, or your emails in the cloud, that you are not running a business that still relies heavily on the hardware that you've got on premise. If you're running a business that still has physical hardware, that if I came in with a hammer, or a big water gun and sprayed it, and it meant downtime for you, more than a couple of minutes, more than running down to the shops and buying another computer and having access to everything, then your business isn't in the cloud. Stop fooling yourself, you've got bits and pieces just stored everywhere. If anything, you've probably just created holes, and vulnerabilities, for people to be able to break into, and if you don't have two-factor authentication, and hardened security for any of these cloud applications. Any of the integrations that you have goes the same way. If you don't have solid API, that's application programming interface, integrations between these applications ... sounds like I'm a rapper, 'cause I'm just using IT stuffs. If you don't have this, then you're probably just creating problems for your business. The reason you won't have everything going to the cloud, is to remove capitol costs, and to create flexibility. Ongoing, the cloud is more expensive, don't fool yourself. A cloud desktop, and the exact scenario that I just described, which is your whole business in the cloud, for a one computer business would be costing you hundreds of dollars a month. That's right, a month. That's without support, that's without anything else, that's just the costs of what it is. If you are trying to run more than one computer, it's gonna be costing you exponentially more than hundreds of dollars every month, of course. If you have lots of computers, you're probably gonna need a server, and that means that needs to be in the cloud as well. That means any of your security policies need to be in the cloud, and you have to have tunnels coming through, so you can actually print from the cloud securely. It becomes quite an expensive activity, especially on the internet connections we have in Australia. When it comes down to it, you still need to have infrastructure that's going to allow for you to connect into everything in the cloud. If everything is in the cloud, you're going to need to have fantastic infrastructure, and that's gonna cost an arm and a leg. $800-$2000 a month would not be unreasonable for internet connection for a business with 10-15 people. So, think about that when you're looking to move everything to the cloud, next time you're at a you're like, "Yep, everything's in the cloud," have a think about what is actually in the cloud, and what isn't in the cloud, and what the cloud means. You might not need the full setup I just said then, but just make sure to use the terms correctly and appropriately for what it is that you have in the cloud. The cloud brings about more security problems than having it all on premise. If something goes wrong on premise, you can unplug your internet connection, and no one is getting in or out. In the cloud, you don't have that privilege. Hardware prices stay the same, roughly speaking. They increase, as per Moore's law, in the size and speed specifications, but if you go and buy hardware, and your cloud provider goes and buys hardware, it's gonna be about the same price. The only way they're making money is by overselling and under-delivering with what they're offering you, or they're charging you more than what it would have been to have it on premise. A great example would be Office 365, only last month, went down for six hours for everyone in Australia, possibly elsewhere, but we know all of our clients said, "Our phones are ringing off the hook." So, we know that it was definitely Australia, and we couldn't do anything about it, except tell them, "Hold tight, they're onto it. We can see that it's down when we go to AussieOutages, we can't do anything about it just at the moment." The cloud brings about removed responsibilities and less control. If your cloud provider's overselling, you're going to have slow performance, and this goes for websites as well. If your website's running slowly, it could be your host, or your cloud hosting provider, or whatever they're calling themselves nowadays. Which brings this back to the start of the conversation. I said, hey, you, get off of my cloud. You, get off of my cloud. Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Don't hang around, 'cause you're making it slow. Oh ho ho. That's it, get off my cloud. Think about it, yep. It's expensive to be in the cloud, a lot of security needs to be put in place, and I've hope you've enjoyed this episode, and you're laughing along with me. #27 Check & Stuur Bij (week 3) Hey hallo en welkom bij: 'wat heb ik vandaag gedaan om mijn bedrijf verder te laten groeien?' Het is zondag en vandaag reviewen we de week. In dit geval week 3. Over wat we deze week allemaal gedaan hebben en wat daar de resultaten van zijn. Jullie weten dat ik mijn... voor degenen die net aansluiten: ik ben mijn reis naar de groei van mijn onderneming aan het documenteren en daarbij probeer ik erachter te komen, wat werkt wel, wat werkt niet? En dat leg ik vast en dat deel ik met jullie, zodat jullie eigenlijk gewoon een hele hoop tijd kunnen besparen en je kunt focussen op de dingen die wel werken. Je mag dat van mij kopiëren. Niet letterlijk natuurlijk, maar de dingen die bij mij werken. Ik zou zeggen: pas ze toe voor jouw bedrijf en ik hoop dat je dezelfde resultaten krijgt of als ik en wellicht nog beter. En dan hoor ik graag van je uiteraard wat je anders hebt gedaan, zodat ik daar ook weer van kan leren. En dat kan toepassen in mijn bedrijf. Het grootste succes van deze week... en ja, ik heb het al eerder gezegd deze week, mijn agenda die puilde helemaal uit. We hebben twee weken geleden een mail merge gedaan. Even spieken welk nummertje dat het was. En maakt ook even niet uit, verwijs ik straks wel even naar. En ja, daar heeft bijna 40%... 38% heeft gereageerd van de 116 die ik aangeschreven heb. Die heb ik allemaal een uitnodiging gestuurd om een afspraak met mij te maken. Of van sommige kreeg ik al reacties terug: ‘joh, bel lekker wanneer het je uitkomt, allemaal goed’. Ik heb er daar… 25% heb ik inmiddels een afspraak dus mee gemaakt. En ik denk dat ik er nu... even denken... drie, acht en drie... dat is 14 uit m’n hoofd; 14 heb ik er gesproken. Nou, echt een succes, ik werd er helemaal dolgelukkig van en enthousiast om niet alleen ondernemers uit de ondernemersvereniging te spreken, want op die manier leer je ze ook wat kennen. Nou ja, wie wat doet en zo kun je elkaar nog is helpen. Maar veel belangrijker of veel leuker is dat van die 14 heb ik volgens mij al zeven vervolgafspraken staan. Ja, dat is natuurlijk hartstikke mooi en ja, dit vraagt naar meer. Ik krijg hier honger van. Als zijnde niet trek om te eten, maar wel om meer van dat soort lijsten te gaan maken. Dus ik denk dat, wij zijn ook sponsor bij TOP Oss, daar zitten we ook in de businessclub. Die hebben natuurlijk ook een hele hoop leden, dus ik denk dat ik daar ook zo'n lijst ga maken en eigenlijk die ondernemers gewoon dezelfde mail ga sturen om op die manier te kijken of we daar wellicht dezelfde resultaten en animo krijgen en in ieder geval in directer contact komen met de ondernemers die daar ook lid zijn en deelnemen. Dan de resultaten van deze week. Zoals ik zei… vorige zondag zei ik van: 'nou, misschien moet ik toch met die fotoo'tjes iets anders gaan doen. Dat ben ik eigenlijk vanaf maandag gaan doen. En daar heb ik ook een berichtje geprobeerd te promoten... ja, promoten? Ik denk dat het een promotie is, ja. Om te kijken van: wat doet het dan? En hoe vaak kijken die mensen dat dan? Zie ik dat hier. Wat opvalt is dat het met name door mannen tussen de 25 en 34 is bekeken. Dus we hebben 1186 mannen bereikt waarvan er 250 meer als 10 seconden hebben gekeken. Dat is wel goed. Die kan ik nog wel eens een retarget sturen met de nieuwe video. Dat ga ik jullie van de week laten zien. Dat is dus een actiepuntje voor deze week. Drie centen, vier centen per resultaat. Dat is natuurlijk helemaal niks qua kosten. En als ik op die manier die doelgroep... dit zijn er... dit is wel... oh, natuurlijk... 400 gezien. 86 meer dan 10 seconden. Ik ga gewoon heel deze doelgroep retargeten, kijken wat dat uitkomt. Dus die ga ik retargeten met de video die daarna kwam en ik denk zelfs daarna met de nieuwe mini-webinar, want ja ook.  Ja, jongens, ik heb jullie dit al eerder verteld. Ik sport graag 's avonds en daarom zat ik hier altijd lekker in m'n t-shirtje, want dan heb ik het lekker warm na het sporten. Maar ja, jullie zien dit waarschijnlijk overdag, want ik neem dit vaak 's avonds op dus ik had zoiets van: nou, ik trek gewoon netjes een overhemd aan, dat komt iets anders over. Ik denk niet dat dat het verschil maakt, maar het is in ieder geval iets wat ik ga proberen. En dan ga ik mijn mini-webinar ook opnieuw opnemen. En die zal ergens deze week komen denk ik. Dus die post ik dan wel opnieuw. En nou ja, hier dus op zich wel veel mensen die dus 1130 mensen, mannen en vrouwen. Vrouwen hetzelfde, maar kijk... van de... is 10% maar wat meer dan 10 seconden kijkt. Dus ik denk dat ik wel de focus echt op de mannen kan hebben hiermee. Als het anders is, laat het me vooral weten. Reageer, zeg wat klopt, wat niet klopt. Zo denk ik erover en dus ja, dat was even een probeersel voor een paar tientjes. En ik denk dat als we die mensen retargeten dan gaat dat helemaal leuk worden. Dus dat was één. Dan hebben we gewoon de pagina met de statistieken. Ja, daar zal er dan wel even eentje uitklappen. Deze, kijk 5.500, 101 organisch. Dat is even ter vergelijking van de rest. Ik heb wel het idee dat het ietsje minder wordt. Ja, hier ging iets fout. Deze die heb ik middels volgens mij een scheduled post gedaan. Daar ging de foto niet goed, de beginfoto, dus die had een willekeurige beeld gepakt ergens halverwege de video. En die heb ik eigenlijk pas vandaag gedeeld vanuit mijn eigen account, omdat ik daar de meeste mensen natuurlijk een link mee heb.  Ik ben begonnen met Hootsuite deze week. Ik had eerder een post gedaan ook over van nou welke de... hoe moet ik het zeggen?... social media content manager of publish manager ken jij? Heb ik een aantal reacties op gehad, niet super veel. Vond ik wel jammer moet ik zeggen. Ik had er wel wat meer reacties op verwacht. En middels Hootsuite ben ik nou van alles allerlei dingen aan het proberen en testen dan toch maar. Ik vond het niet heel intuitief, ik moet veel zoeken. Dus ja, dan heb ik al zoiets van... hmm, als ik daar dan ook nog geld aan uit moet geven... Maar goed, wie niet waagt, wie niet wint. Dus ik heb de stap genomen en ik ben het maar gaan proberen. Dus deze week ook daarin als het goed is... Instagram... ik ben helemaal niet bekend met Instagram. En nadeel ook dat dat eigenlijk alleen maar vanaf je telefoon kan en nou via Hootsuite heb ik gevonden dat het ook kan. Maar ja, ik weet dus niet eens hoe ik hier naar mijn eigen posts kan kijken, want die zie ik niet eens. Behalve dan eentje die ik eerder heb gedeeld. Okay. En dat was dus deze. Dus ja, ik heb zoiets van dit moet echt wel fors omhoog en middels dat promoten en retargeten ben ik aan het kijken of we dat omhoog krijgen, waardoor we dus op het doel is op IT-Secrets op de pagina gewoon meer volgers te krijgen. En ja, meer interactie.  Nogmaals, als je tips hebt, laat het me weten. Reageer hieronder. Super leuk! Alle kritiek of op- en aanmerkingen zijn welkom. En dan ga ik voor nu even door naar LinkedIn. En dan hebben we... waar is activity? Hier. Even kijken... Ja, die mini-webinar; ik vond hem zelf ook niet heel sterk. Die ga ik zeker opnieuw doen. 142 views. Nou, deze 294, 204. Ik heb wel het idee dat het wat afneemt. 146, 190, dat dan toch weer niet. 216. Wanneer is dit? Eén week geleden. Ik merk wel dat ze het na een week echt wel meer views gaan krijgen ofzo. Ik denk dat het toch wel even overheen gaat eer dat die views doortikken. Dus dan is deze misschien nog helemaal zo slecht niet, omdat ik binnen een week al 300 views te krijgen. Maar goed. Dat is LinkedIn. En weinig reacties. Weinig likes eigenlijk. Ik zie op LinkedIn nog wel dat het zakelijk is, daar eigenlijk heel weinig interactie is. Dus ook daar als iemand daar tips over heeft, laat het me vooral weten.  Dan de... ja, die hebben we eigenlijk hier al gehad. Dat is natuurlijk hetzelfde waar we hier dalijk uitkomen. Dus die kan ik overslaan. YouTube, kanaalcijfers, nou ja, dat blijft eigenlijk wel leuk omhoog gaan. Ja toch, die ‘check de week’, die doet het toch goed. Die blijft het goed doen. Leuk om te zien, dus ik ben benieuwd wat deze volgende week doet. Kijk, staan alle twee bovenaan; ‘check de week’ nummer één en nummer twee. Dus dan komt dalijk de derde bij... kijkcijfers. Wat is dit dan? Gegevensverwerking. Die zijn er nog niet ofzo? Apart. Die zullen ook al wel ergens... kijk 43 minuten vanuit vertonen. YouTube-zoekopdrachten op basis van voip. Serieus? Nou, dan gaan we even kijken. YouTube... als ik hier nou zoek op voip. Dan staan wij toch niet bovenaan? Hier zie ik ons niet bij staan, dus. Misschien met hoofdletters of geen incognito-tab. Dat wil misschien ook nog wel helpen. Mooi. Nee, hier staan wij niet bij. Dus daar besteed ik geen tijd aan. Is misschien met de... maar ja, toch 6,9%. Ik vind het toch gek. Weergave: één. Eentje gaan we niet verder inzoomen, is helemaal niet interessant.  Dan 'kijkers interessen', daar heb ik nog te weinig gegevens voor. Okay. Maar ja, ondertiteling. Dat ben ik wel aan het overwegen, maar ja, jongens dat kost zoveel tijd. Ik snap dat heel veel mensen die video's bekijken op hun telefoon, terwijl ze misschien wel aan het werk zijn of waar dan ook, liever niet direct het geluid aan hebben staan. Dus als je dan ondertiteling hebt, krijgen ze toch het hele verhaal mee. Dus ja, er staat alleen... dat zal wel één die hoog op mijn wensenlijstje staat om mee te beginnen. Maar ja, je begrijpt als ik 's avonds hier om 22:00 uur dit ga zitten doen en... ik ben aan het proberen om een virtueel team om me heen te bouwen. En dan bedoel ik niet iets geautomatiseerds, maar wel gewoon mensen van vlees en bloed. Maar die niet bij mij in dienst zijn, zodat we een contentteam kunnen gaan creëren die... nou ja, stel ik maak vijf video'tjes in het vooruit. Dus ik maak vandaag de video, die zou over vijf dagen gepubliceerd moeten worden, dat dan... ik maak vandaag voor jou die video, die zet ik op Google Drive neer waar dat team ook toegang toe heeft en hun kunnen dan alles editen en doen en voor mij apart zelfs nog via Hootsuite uploaden om zo het overal te publiceren en te doen. Dus dan hoef ik alleen maar dit te doen en dan wordt de rest verzorgd. Alleen daar ben ik nog over aan het puzzelen, nadenken, wie, wat en hoe. Ik doe dat al wel voor de podcast en ik doe dat ook voor de website en ik doe dat ook voor andere zaken en ook daar ga ik binnenkort denk ik gewoon een podcastaflevering aan wijden. Over hoe ik mijn virtueel team rondom me heen vergaar en inzet om mij eigenlijk gewoon een hele hoop tijd en werk uit handen te nemen, waarbij het ook nog goed betaalbaar blijft, want ja, even eerlijk gezegd, als je dat hier in Nederland zou doen, ja, we willen allemaal een boterham verdienen hier. We willen leuk wonen en doen dus. De huurtarieven hier die zijn echt niet interessant daarvoor. Dan wordt het gewoon te duur per aflevering om iets te maken zonder dat daar direct inkomsten uit voortkomen. Dus die kosten die moeten laag blijven om dit voor jullie te kunnen blijven doen. Dus ja, daar ga ik het ook nog wel over hebben van de week.  Terug even naar video's. Ja, die weergaven hier, slaat natuurlijk nog steeds nergens op. Ik wil wel even terug naar die tabel die ik eerder had. Dus nou, klik ik even op deze. Juist. Klikfrequentie, 100%. Ja, bij eentje, okay. Dat is nogal makkelijk dan. Kan natuurlijk zijn als een titel heel erg pakkend is, dat ze daardoor gewoon hoger doorklikken. Ja, die deed het ook goed. Maar ja, 10 hoe verander ik ze. Nou is die van gisteren natuurlijk ook een beetje... dat gaat een beetje over hetzelfde basisonderwerp natuurlijk. Hoe verander je valse overtuigingen? Kijken, zou ik zeggen. Leuk, zeker leuk als het lukt, want het brengt je zo verschrikkelijk veel. Ja, sorry jongens, ben een beetje verkouden. Dan Twitter, ja tweets. Prima, ik tweet ook elke dag. Nogmaals, ik heb helemaal niks met dit platform Twitter. Ik hou er niet van, ik snap het niet. Ik wil  het ook eigenlijk niet snappen. Lekker typfoutje hier zie ik al wel. Daar ben ik ook... ja, ik ben niet voor niks IT'er geworden. F7, spellingscontrole. Love it. Maar ja, die werkt in Twitter niet dus als ik dan de tekst moet inkorten, dan knip ik dan wat woorden eruit en dan krijg je dit soort fouten. Slordig, dus beter opletten. Maar die doet het dus wel het beste.  Tweet-activity. Dat kan ik nog wel zien. Nou, wow hey, 84 impressies. En hier, dat is leuk, 493. Dat is de podcast, ja, die doet het wel goed. Dan zien we dus ook dat die hashtags ook wel goed werken. Ja, daar ben ik deze week ook meer mee begonnen om betere hashtags toe te voegen, zodat het bij het zoeken eigenlijk beter naar voren komt. Nou ja, veel profile visits. Wie is dit? Top follower. Die volgt mij dan ofzo? Ja, danst dus een beetje op en neer. Ja, meeste mannen. Snap ik met dit onderwerp. En wie is dit? Okay. Hmm, lijkt een beetje op Trello. Geen idee, okay. Misschien kunnen we 'm gewoon gebruiken als influencer, ik weet het niet. Dat die is een keer iets gaat retweeten. Maar ja, aangezien hier alles in het Engels is, betwijfel ik dat en ik heb dat wel een keer overwogen om dit allemaal in het Engels te gaan doen, omdat ik dan een veel breder publiek kan aanspreken. Maar laten we hier eerst in Nederland is even opbouwen en dan zien we daarna wel weer verder.  Dat was Twitter. Dag Henry! Bedankt, leuk, tot de volgende keer! Dan vragen we om naam, e-mail en telefoonnummer en dan eventueel bedrijfsnaam is wel handig. En dan belt onze medewerker jou op het gewenste tijdstip om de installatie te verzorgen. En daarmee is de cirkel rond. Dus helemaal super leuk, die hebben we deze week gebouwd. En ook daar zullen wij dus via advertenties, traffic, verkeer, bezoekers naartoe gaan begeleiden.  Dat is de week voor mij, grootste succes en samenvatting even is de mail merge campagne met 25% een belafspraak. En ik heb de procenten nog niet uitgerekend van degene met wie ik een belafspraak heb gehad en dan een vervolgafspraak... volgens mij is dat 50% in dit geval dus slaging super. Hartstikke blij mee en daar gaan we vooral mee verder. En ik zou zeggen: 'ik zie jullie morgen en dan nog een leuke week tegemoet'. En druk voorbereiden voor een nieuwe klant, voor... zeg ik het goed?... 17 gebruikers voor het ‘altijd veilig in bedrijf-pakket’. En even denken... ja, de dingen die ik net zei, we gaan de mini-webinar wil ik opnieuw opnemen. En ik ga de retargeting campagne maken binnen Facebook. Campagne blijft een fout woord, maar aangezien Facebook ze zo noemt gebruik ik die terminologie ook maar om de mensen die deze video hebben gezien dat ze dus ook meerdere video's van ons te zien gaan krijgen om op die manier een following op te bouwen.  Bedankt voor het kijken! Episode 027: Overvejelser når du skal flytte I skyen - økonomi

Der er sket en masse siden sidste episode. Blandt andet er episode 26 blevet sprunget over. Det er ikke noget du skal bruge energi på at tænke for meget over. Det er en ren tællefejl fra min side. Kort og godt så findes Fabrikken ikke længere. Kenneth og jeg er gået hver til sit og har startet hver vores egen virksomhed. Det er der som sådan ikke noget galt i. Jeg kommer til at savne vores gode sammenhold og de gode medarbejdere. Det er, uden tvivl, noget af det sværeste jeg har gjort i mit liv og det er uden tvivl noget jeg håber jeg aldrig kommer til at gøre igen. Første lige kort om det nye ”Shifts” fra Microsoft. Microsoft Teams for firstline workers er I gang med at rulle ud. Shifts er i bund og grund et værktøj til at lave vagtskemaplanlægning, som dine medarbejdere via Teams-appen kan få adgang til. Om det så er online, på pc eller mobil er underordnet. Det fede er at der er indbygget funktionalitet til at anmode om at bytte vagter som lederen så kan godkende. Jeg ser det som et rigtig godt værktøj til virksomheder der har behov for vagtplaner og har en medarbejderstyrke der er meget mobil. Der er mange ting der skal overvejes og der er mange faktorer der skal tages op til overvejelse. Det der er fornuftigt og positivt for den ene virksomhed er negativt for den næste. Og selv på indersiden af virksomheden, kan den ene afdeling synes at det er en god ide, men den næste er stærk modstander. Dog vil jeg sige. Er du en 1-5 mands virksomhed der er nystartet og ikke rigtig har noget system endnu, eller måske bare lige har en NAS-box… Så stop lige her… Bare stop.. Så kan du lige så se at komme rigtigt fra start med en Office 365 Business Premium eller E3 løsning. Slut… Der er ikke så meget at snakke om. Med mindre din nystartede virksomhed lægger ud med at arbejde med militære hemmeligheder og andet data der er så fortroligt at det skal være 100% off-grid. Men så starter du nok heller ikke med en NAS-boks i kælderen. FØRSTE PUNKT DER SKAL OP TIL DEBAT: ØKONOMI Lad os bare erkende at økonomi spiller en meget stor rolle I beslutningen om du skal I skyen eller ej. Og jeg vil da også mene at I mange tilfælde er det en no-brainer for små og mellemstore virksomheder. Jeg har da og selv en Office 365 E3 selv om jeg kun er mig selv… Det er måske også lidt overkill, Jeg kunne have nøjes med en Business Premium. Men pointen er at jeg kan som et en-mands firma have en professionel Exchange-løsning, en professionel Skype–Business løsning og en spitny SharePoint løsning, med et 5 TB onedrive, og så lige en Office Pro plus pakke jeg kan installere på 5 Pc’er og 5 mobilenheder. Og så er der alle de andre Apps jeg kan gøre brug af… Det hele koster kr. 234,- om måneden eller kr. 1.758,- om året. Det vil tage mange…. Mange år før økonomien ved at have on-prem for alt det vil kunne betale sig for mig. Men når nu du f.eks. har en virksomhed på 150 mand og du har etableret Exchange, Skype og SharePoint.. Så er det et helt andet regnestykke. Min erfaring er bare at det ikke altid er så ligetil en beregning som mange gør det til. Økonomisk, vil der blive flyttet en del ressourcer fra drift til licenser til Microsoft og modeller som den herunder bliver flittigt brugt. Den mangler dog den del i Cloud Computing der handler kom administration og koordinering med Microsoft, samt udvikling og vedligehold af kode. Da opdateringer til SharePoint online ikke kan fravælges eller testes, vil der være vedligehold af kode fra tid til anden. DER ER 5 PUNKTER DU SKAL TÆNKE MED IND NÅR DU SKAL BEREGNE ØKONOMIEN  Alle kan sammenligne Licensomkostninger og harware. Men hvad med den total omkostning. Det der I konsulentsprog hedder TCO? (Total Cost of Ownership)  Hvad koster en times nedetid for din forretning? Hvis du har 150 mand der ikke kan arbejde I en time, så har du lige miste en måneds arbejde for en person. Ikke bare lønudgifter men også mistet indtægt som den medarbejder ikke har kunne give virksomheden I en måned. 5-års reglen for Hardware. Ofte glemmer man at medregne omkostningerne ved at skulle skifte hardware hvert 5. år. Fordi det er lidt langt ude I fremtiden. Båndbredde… Det er din bedste ven eller værste fjende. Ofte ender mange virksomheder med at tage pengene fra besparelsen ved Office365 og så putte de penge I en optimeret infrastruktur, herunder båndbredde. Og skal du øge din båndbredde, så skal du igen ud og beregne det ind I din TCO. Men hvordan hastighed kommer ind i billedet kan du høre mere om i næste episode, hvor jeg snakker om drift, herunder hastighed og hvordan den kan optimeres. Udgifter til strøm… Det er en ting.
