We return to our Is this Cinema series to look at one of the 2000's most divisive horror movies: Tom Six's The Human Centipede (2009). The concept was so shocking (three humans sewed together by a mad doctor to make a...well you guessed it...) it became a pop culture phenomenon. Comedy shows like South Park devoted whole episodes to it. But was it cinema or just an edgelord eyeball grab for money?  Actor, musician, artist Andras Jones (Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-rama) who can be found at https://previouslyyours.com/ joins Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill to hash it out. Andras has a totally different definition of cinema than Craig that helps broaden the conversation. This is Part 1 of 2, the conversation was so epic. Part 2 which digs into the challenges of defining what is cinema comes out next time as SMC Pod #180. Here we go...

CW: Like, basically everything. We're back with more Human Centipede, like it or not. This one ratchets up the unpleasantness of the first film exponentially. But for real, we tried to discuss this film a little more delicately than we do with most films we discuss just because the content is so rough, even hearing about it is likely going to overwhelming for some folks. But it's still A LOT. Don't be afraid to stop this one if it gets to be too much. Or skip it altogether if you'd prefer. We'll certainly understand. But, if you feel up to joining us, we'll be talking about a clever meta concept executed with absolute disdain for its audience, the worst therapist of all time, the worst neighbor of all time, and the worst parking garage attendant of all time. We watched The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence and were treated to one of the most lauded gross-out flicks in recent memory. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/GpcCJ8ozirU Synopsis This is the unfortunate story of Martin, a diminutive, quiet, and overweight lad who doesn't fancy senseless chit-chat. Martin is a nightshift parking lot attendant who has an obsession with the movie, The Human Centipede: First Sequence.  He fantasizes about someday creating his own human centipede, larger and more fleshed out than the one depicted in the movie.  Martin's life is depraved in every way that you can imagine. His mother hates him for having his father put away for sexually molesting him. His therapist wants to molest him. His neighbor wants to kill him. One day Martin snaps. Everyone gets more poop mouth than they bargained for. Review The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence is a meta sequel to, you guessed it, The Human Centipede. Martin obsesses over the first movie, and for that, I kind of love this sequel. It's not just the meta take that's fun, it's the insanity of the whole thing done with a smile and a wink. It's absolutely depraved because it feels like a place and a person and a life that could exist.  With this sequel director Tom Six set out to give “true horror fans” a movie worthy of total disgust. In this he delivers, I would definitely place this among the grossest movies I've ever watched right along side, Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood, and The Sadness.  Watch The Human Centipede 2Watch on AmazonClick here to Rent or Buy The enjoyment of The Human Centipede 2 lies in the shock value and the commitment to depravity. The version we watched was in black and white, which added a whole other level of gritty grossness to the already disgusting experience.  There were more than a few moments where the comedy in this shown through the waves of nausea and I laughed out loud with shocked disgust.  I admire this movie for what it is, an attempt to make you watch it through your fingers. Most people will find this movie to be absolutely uncalled for and totally devoid of entertainment value - it's not for those people. The genius part about The Human Centipede 2 is that it uses those people who shouldn't be watching it as a siren song to get to those who should be watching it.  The Human Centipede 2 exists, and that's enough for me. For the seasoned horror fan, this isn't a scary movie in terms of being thrilled or startled, it's scary because of what it puts in your soul. Score 6/10

A story about a state-run prison, an insane warden, his creepy assistant, and Tom Six jumping the shark. Listen in as me and my resident Human Centipede specialist, Chris, try to figure out why this unnecessary sequel exists. Written and directed by Tom Six (The Human Centipede 1 & 2, The Onania Club), the Los Angeles Times called the finale to the trilogy "frightless and boring," while Entertainment Weekly said "the Human Centipede 3 is crap." Talk about blunt. It tells the story of unhinged prison warden Bill Boss (Dieter Laser, who played the villain in the first film) and his failing prison in the middle of a desert hell. Faced with unruly prisoners and a threat to his funding, Bill turns to his creepy little accountant, Dwight Butler (played by part 2's villain, Laurence R. Harvey), for ideas. The best one they come up with is to take inspiration from the first two films and stitch all the prisoners ass-to-mouth. Uber meta, right? Of course, the plan is green lit by Bill and what could possibly go wrong..? The film is currently available on AMC+, IFC Films Unlimited, Prime Video, and of course Blu-ray and DVD.

O dear... Our host Ruud is looking a bit green on this episode's screenshot. Could it be that we're tackling a truly disgusting, vile and horrifying film this time around? You may judge that for yourself. For it's time we have a discussion about The Human Centipede. It's the tale of a German doctor, who wants to stitch three people together. Mouth to anus. And believe it or not, but this movie has quite the lively fanbase. One of them is the Swedish filmmaker and horrorvlogger Sarah Giercksky, better known as Sarah of Horror. And who knows? Maybe her enthusiasm will convince you to give it a watch! The Human Centipede was directed by Dutch filmmaker Tom Six. And it is quite a curious beast, because its reputation far exceeds a real familiarity with the actual film. Thanks to South Park many people know of it, but fewer people actually saw it. Still it was a commercial success that spawned two sequels. And Ruud watched the whole trilogy in preparation for this show, something he wasn't prepared to do for the Fifty Shades-episode... We also discuss what the Human Centipede would be like in a 4DX-screening, feeding the horror monster inside and watching Salo five times in one week. Hey, you want to support this podcast? PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Tom Six (THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE trilogy, THE ONANIA CLUB) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From Tom's first viewing of Pier Paolo Pasolini's SALO and realizing just how impactful the art of cinema can be… to his nihilistic view of society and the world at large… to the making of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE and the hurdles he faced finding a distributor willing to take a chance on his film… to finding worldwide success as his HUMAN CENTIPEDE trilogy permeated pop culture across the entire planet… to history painfully repeating itself with his latest film THE ONANIA CLUB as once again distributors (and even festivals) are afraid to touch his controversial film in today's overly sensitive climate… this is truly an episode for the books and THE MOVIE CRYPT at its most raw and unfiltered! Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who's anxious producers may have made a severely premature move, Tom and the boys pull no punches in discussing the state of today's neutered industry, and the “Unpopular Opinion” segment returns with an extremely blunt and powerfully inspiring vengeance. Was als vielversprechende Reihe anfing, mündete vermutlich im schlechtesten Film, der bis dato bei Devils & Demons besprochen wurde. This week on The Spectator Film Podcast… The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) 4.17.20 Featuring: Austin, Maxx Commentary track begins at 11:41 — Notes — The Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms & Literary Theory by J. A. Cuddon — This book’s a very helpful resource for grappling with the otherwise challenging or inscrutable terminology frequently encountered in academic writing. I’m linking to the 5th Edition, which also credits M. A. R. Habib, although I used to 4th Edition for the definition of diachronic/synchronic I’m including below: “A term coined c. 1913 by Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913). A diachronic approach to the study of language (or languages) involves an examination of its origins, development, history and change. In contrast, the synchronic approach entails the study of a linguistic system in a particular state, without reference to time. The importance of a synchronic approach to an understanding of language lies in the fact that for Saussure each sign has not properties other than the specific relational ones which define it within its own synchronic system.” “Eat Shit and Die: Coprophagia and Fimetic Force in Tom Six’s The Human Centipede (First Sequence) and The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)” by Dolores B. Phillips from The Projector — This essay by Dolores B. Phillips provides lots of insightful analysis, examining the politics of coprophagia and how it’s been depicted on film. Additionally, this essay comes from The Projector: A Journal on Film, Media, and Culture, which is completely open-access! This particular issue of The Projector focuses on the theme of food and consumption in horror cinema. We’ll include some insightful passages from Phillips’ essay below: “The Human Centipede's cult and commercial success suggest that it readmits excrementality—and that it is the epilogue of Laporte’s History of Shit, which tracks the return of excrement to the fields of cultural production. Excrement becomes capital, shit alchemically transformed into the coin of the realm. The films shift the register of excremental politics: much of its study (Warwick Anderson, Jed Esty, David Inglis, Achille Mbembe, George Bataille) concentrates upon the purgation, elimination, and celebration of shit. Indeed, excrement has a particularly potent political resonance in postcolonial fiction, where shitting in beds and leaving heaping mounds of filth in toilets is a particularly insulting intrusion into the homes of dispossessed middle class citizens and intellectuals whose lives are disrupted by political flux. Its ingestion adds a new dimension of cruelty and spite to images of effusive excretion and excessive consumption. As they avail themselves of an ironic posture toward recycling waste, images of coprophagy also align themselves with themes of decadence, humiliation, and hyper or mismanagement of the body.” “…a deconstruction of the conflicting social settings of the subject in an age of information oversaturation. Instead of a solitary figure bent over a keyboard or a mobile device, face illumined by a single screen into which she stares, rapt, substituting virtual interactions for real-life connections with others, and instead of the endless connectivity with others offered by social media and the instantaneousness of immersion in the internet, the HUMANCENTiPAD and Six’s precursor films offer an intermediary: the individual sutured to others, ingesting excrement and extruding it. The solitary netizen is revealed as a fiction—she reads and is read by others. She is bound to them by the streams of information into which she dives, searching for stimulation and novelty, impatiently demanding updates by obsessively and repeatedly pressing F5. This is because the viewer is as much a segment in the centipede as its victims” “Our own vertiginous enjoyment of the film’s horrors highlight the absurd, disturbing excess Gwendolyn Audrey Foster laments as she observes ‘the cyclical loop’ of ‘capitalism eating itself.’ She argues that television culture in the US disgorges its excess to feast upon it again in the forms of exploitative gluttony. She describes television as ‘coprophagic and cannibalistic in this way; TV is largely feces, our own regurgitated feces, which we ultimately pay to eat.’ Se notes that ‘shows such as Hoarders exploit and engage in coprophagia for better ratings, ultimately supporting gluttonous capitalism.’ Tom Six’s films make this the literal foundation for their appeal, especially as they sink deep roots in other moments of coprophagy in film and internet culture” [The writing by Gwendolyn Audrey Foster referenced in this passage from “Capitalism Eats Itself: Gluttony and Coprophagia from Hoarders to La Grande Bouffe“] “Grotesque Realism and the Carnivalesque in Tom Six’s The Human Centipede (First Sequence) and The Human Centipede II Full Sequence” by Ellen N. Freeman from Monstrum — We didn’t make use of this essay to help frame our conversation of the film, but it remains an insightful read. Freeman examines The Human Centipede in light of Mikhail Bakhtin’s writing on the carnivalesque and grotesque in Rabelais. Furthermore, Monstrum is an awesome multilingual, peer-reviewed open-access journal on horror and you should absolutely check out the other essays and reviews, which include writing on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Lucio Fulci, the occult in Hammer Studios Horror, Peeping Tom (1960). — Listener Picks — Do you want to pick a movie for us to discuss on the show? This episode talks about a movie whose premise might be disturbing to some. The Human Centipede wasn't in every multiplex when it came out in 2010, but the film is now firmly a part of American culture, the basis of parodies from South Park to Conan O'Brien.  When it was released, the premise was so revolting that many reviewers wouldn't even summarize it.  Roger Ebert declined to assign a star-rating, concluding, “It is what it is.”  When Alec saw the movie for the first time, he wanted to meet its creator.  Years later, this episode of Here's the Thing is the result.  Fortunately, writer-director Tom Six isn't just warped; he's also a raconteur with a twinkle in his eye.  He answers Alec's fanboy questions with humor and patience, and they break down the whole Human Centipede trilogy from critical, financial, and technical standpoints.  Listeners will also learn about Six's pre-Centipede career in reality television and teen comedy, and what he has coming up in 2019.  Six had a role planned in his new film for Alec.  Hear why Alec's wife cut that off at the pass.

Word of the sequel spread fast, and the buzz increased when the film was banned in the UK. Now the sequel is here and the full sequence twelve-person Human Centipede is ready to be revealed. Do four-times the people equate to four-times the entertainment? Listen as Stuart, Marjorie, and Arnie line up to review this sequel and find out!

BestRadio Brasil - On Demand

Edição de número dezenove do Claquete está no ar! Mais um e nos tornamos o Programa Menos Ouvido Que Mais Se Manteve No Ar! (brincadeira!!) A comédia entre amigos The Big Year, de David Frankel. Clique no play! E se você tiver sugestões, reclamações ou receitas de torta salgada encaminhe para claquete@bestradiobrasil.com

Warning: This podcast deals with subject matter that will be objectionable to the vast majority of listeners. No one under the age of 18 should listen, and those over the age of 18 should listen with caution. It's the underground horror hit of the year--The Human Centipede. Playing only at midnight showings in select theaters as well as On Demand, this film's content promises to be one of the raunchiest horror films ever. With the tagline "100% Medically Accurate" you know you're in for something more than your standard slasher, but how extreme is this film and, more to the point, is it any good? Stuart, Arnie, and Marjorie have watched this film and review every gross detail in this podcast.
