Join host Janet Berrong as she guides you into Spiritual Wellness in this, the last of her three-part series on Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness. Listen and learn how to allow God to lead you into a health-filled balance in your spirit, soul, and body. **** Welcome to Celebrating God's Crace, a Women World Leaders podcast. I'm your host, Janet Berrong. Thank you for joining us today as we celebrate God's grace in our lives in ministry and around the world. It is good to be back with you today sharing about health, wellness, beauty and Jesus. Yes, they do go hand in hand. Today we're going to focus on the spiritual well-being. It's a three-part of the series where we touch base on being healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually. Create spiritual balance by loving God with all your heart. Matthew 2237 reads, Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy mind and all thy soul. When we surrender our troubles to God, we are able to live in abundance of faith, hope and love that only come from him. First Corinthians 1313 reads, now these three remain, faith, hope and love. And the greatest of these is love. Sounds simple right? Love God with all three parts of your creation, and you will walk in freedom. Unfortunately, balance seems to be one of the hardest things to achieve. The heart carries a heavy load. Loving God with your entire heart is an intentional act, and not something that has been done randomly. Love is a choice. This means that you have to take action by making the choice to love. God reminds his children of his restorations and redemptions, and he wants nothing more for us to be a part of that plan. Being involved with God's plan of restoration will help you stay spiritually aligned with the whole heart and allow you to achieve balance of physical, spiritual and emotional health. Our spiritual health will have a significant impact on our emotional health, which will have a major influence on our physical health. The interconnection between the spirit, the soul and the body is certainly a complex connection. Nevertheless, that connection is real. The apostle John was inspired by God to write Third John one two. Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. This is an indication of the importance of attending to the matters of the soul, as it relates to being healthy, loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, impacts everything we do, and everything we are. Starting first with our spiritual health makes balancing the wheel much easier because we know who's we are in a culture that encourages us to rely on different kinds of specialties, for different dimensions of our lives, is easy to forget to see our lives as a whole, the way God sees us. You are a new creation in Christ, mind, body, spirit. But until Jesus returns, we are still a work in progress. If you have not put your trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can do so today. Start by trusting Him for His ways, in his timing, get connected and aligned through His Word of God, and having that personal relationship with God Himself, our Creator, Savior, the Holy One. If this is you today, please email us at prayer at women world leaders.com. drop us a note. We would love to pray with you and celebrate with you and your decision. As you continue to place your trust in God. He will continue to fill your heart with joy, peace and hope that overflows into the lives of people around you. Romans 1513 reads, may God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in him. My dear sisters, as I close out our time together. I want to share a poem with you that I felt so appropriate for this time, drinking from my saucer by John Paul Moore. I've never made a fortune. It's probably too late now, but I don't worry about that much. I'm happy anyhow and as I go along life's way, I'm reaping better than I sowed. I'm drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed. I don't have a lot of riches, and sometimes the going gets tough, but I've loved ones around me and that makes me rich enough. I thank God for His blessings and His mercy he's bestowed. I'm drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed. I remember times when things went wrong, my faith were somewhat thin. But at once the dark clouds broke, the sun peed through again. So God helped me not to gripe about the tough rose i have heard. I'm drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed. If God gives me the strength and courage when the waves grow steep and rough, I not ask for other blessings. I am blessed enough. In May I never be too busy to help others bear their loads. I will keep drinking from my saucer because my cup has overflowed. Thank you for listening to women world leaders podcast. Join us each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As we explore together God's extravagant love in your courageous progress. Visit our website at WWW dot women world leaders.com. The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War
Scratch One Flattop-The Battle of Coral Sea

The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 11, 2022 74:14

While the hit and run carrier raids of February and March tested American carrier doctrine to an extent, and the Pearl Harbor raid as well as Indian Ocean raids tested Imperial Navy doctrine also to an extent, this is the very first time that both navies tested each other's way of doing things, and in the process found things that worked, and things that well…didn't work.  Let's dig into it…Talking Points:• What sets off the battle of Coral Sea?o Outline Japanese plans for Operation MO Japanese wanted to seize Port Moresby and all of New Guinea.  By doing this, it would provide Japan with both a way to isolate Australia as well as New Zealand from allied supply lines, specifically American supply lines.  • Why Rabaul (Opeation R) wasn't good enough This was to be prefaced by the Japanese capture of Tulagi, which is an island we will hear a lot about in the near future.  By capturing Tulagi, in the Solomons, the Japanese could patrol the area and the sea lanes to Port Moresby so as to allow their invasion force a free hand. As part of the Port Moresby invasion attempt, the invasion group was to be covered by two separate carrier groups, one which centered around the light carrier Shoho, and another which centered around the fleet carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku.o US intel at Station HYPO and fleet radio unit Melbourne, or FRUMEL decrypt Japanese messages to an extent, and in turn believe that the Japanese will strike the area of Port Moresby, or the northern coast of Australia on or about the first week of May. As a result of this intel, Nimitz deploys the only two carrier task forces at his disposal at this time, those centered around USS Lexington, and USS Yorktown, TF 11 and TF 17 respectively, to stand by the area of the Coral Sea with designs to intercept and destroy the incoming Japanese invasion and support fleets.• On May 1 the two US CV TFs unite under the command of ADM Fletchero May 4, Fletcher detaches CV5 to attack recent Japanese positions on Tulagi CV5's attacks are relatively successful, with damage inflicted on enemy positions and shipping in and around the harbor of Tulagi• US losses are minimal• By May 6, Fletcher is aware that Japanese CVs are in the area, and the Japanese invasion fleet is not far behind.  As a result, he detaches ADM Crace's cruisers WITHOUT air cover to block the invasion force.o This is potentially a critical blunder by Fletcher.  Crace's CAs could have been blown out of the water by Japanese CVs, as it was, they were attacked three times by Japanese aircraft and once by MacArthur's B17s.   Japanese reports stated that they had sunk a BB, damaged a second BB and a CA.  Japanese sent no further attacks towards Crace.  His vessels survived due to poor Japanese (and American) accuracy as well as his skillful maneuvering.   The sighting of the supposed BBs by the Japanese informed the invasion fleet to reverse course Still a horrible decision by Fletcher• First day of the carrier battle May 7• Early on the morning of the 7th, Japanese launch searches to find US CVso Japanese scout planes from Shokaku find US ships and radio ADM Tagaki of 1 CV, 1 CA, and 3 DD. What the Japanese actually sight is the detached oiler Neosho and her escort DD Sims.  • How did the Japanese pilot screw this up this bad?• Japanese arrive over oiler and DD, realize their mistake and continue their search, they return and attack and sink Sims and force Neosho to be abandonned• At 0815 a CV5 SBD piloted by John Nielsen finds the Japanese screening force under ADM Goto, which includes light carrier Shoho.  o An error in Nielsen's coding made the message read 2 Japanese CVs instead of 1.• Fletcher loses his mind on Nielsen when he lands and clarifies his message Believing this to be the main Japanese CV force, Fletcher launches everything he has.  • 93 aircraft are flung at Shohoo 18 F4Fs, 53 SBDs, 22 TBDs from CV2 and CV5• Lexington Air Group, under Bill Ault arrive over Shoho firsto The SBDs attack first, and score at least 2 bomb hits and the TBDs score 5 torpedo hits This is the only real successful TBD attack of WW2• Lex AG executes a hammer and anvil attack and leave Shoho a wreck Talk about Walt Nelson and Ted Wiebe• Yorktown Air Group arrive next and continue to pummel Shoho.o Estimated 11 bombs and 2 more torpedoeso She is barely afloat as US aircraft leave and is gone by 1135• Lexington VB2 CO, Bob Dixon sent a prearranged radio signal back to Fletcher that simply said, “Scratch One Flattop”• Second day of the carrier battle May 8• Both Japanese and US locate each other almost simultaneouslyo US launch first at 0900, Japanese at 0915 Opposing forces actually pass each other on the way to their targets• US attack Japanese firsto The well-coordinated attack of May 7 gives way to the mess of May 8 US aircraft have trouble finding the targets due to squally weather• When they do find them, they can't coordinate their attacks as the previous day Yorktown aircraft under Bill Burch find and attack Shokaku.• The ship is moving radically but is still hit with 2 1,000 pound bombs which puts her flight deck out of action.• Lex Air Group attacks and half of her SBDs find Shokaku and attack, hitting her once, the other half of the attackers from Lex can't find the ship.• All TBD torpedo attacks by both Air Groups miss their targets or the weapons fail to explode• Japanese attack on US fleet• Enemy is picked up 68 nautical miles away by US radaro Poorly executed fighter direction operations positioned the US CAP too low to intercept the incoming enemy strike.• One of the stranger aspects of Coral Sea is that SBDs were utilized as anti-torpedo plane CAPo The assumption was that the Japanese Kate was as slow and sluggish as the TBD, which was obviously false One of the anti-VT pilots was Swede Vejtasa• Talk about Swede's dogfight against Zuikaku aircraft• Despite the best efforts of the US CAP, the Japanese break througho The Kates attack CV5 and miss, yet a hammer and anvil attack against CV2 succeeds CV2 turned like a whale and could not evade the torpedoes.  • She takes two on her port side, one ruptures her avgas tanks, which eventually seal her fateo The Vals attack Lex and hit her twiceo The Vals attack Yorktown and hit her severely damaging her as well• Lexington goes downo Avgas fumes spread throughout the ship, it is thought that a spark from a DC powered motor ignited the fumes which eviscerated the internals of the ship, starting uncontrollable fires. The first major explosion kills Lex's main DC party IF WE HAVE THE TIME, LET'S GO THROUGH LEX'S DEATH• Outcomeo Coral sea is technically a draw Seen as US strategic victory in that it is the first time the Japanese are stopped• Port Moresby is not invaded, and the Japanese expansion, at least for now, is checked Tactical defeat for the US Navy• Losing Lex in exchange for Shoho is not acceptable in any wayo Poor FDO operations stationing CAP too low and out of place contributed to losing Lexo Poor design (prewar design) heavily contributed to Lex's losso Poor US coordination on the morning attack against Shokaku and Zuikaku allowed both to escape the battle Sho and Zui would be unavailable for the Midway operation• Sho due to damage and Zui due to heavy aircrew losseso What lessons do we learn regarding future operations?

Throughout another year of bluster and bedlam in Westminster, John's brilliantly acerbic political sketches have once more provided the nation with a much-needed injection of humour. In A Farewell to Calm: The New Normal Survival Guide, Crace introduces an infectiously funny selection of his finest pieces from 2020–21, taking in everything from a summer of unfathomable U-turns to Christmas Covid confusion, and from lockdown-lifting to Brexit blithering. Led by Boris's poundshop Churchill tribute act, and featuring a cast of everyone's least favourite pantomime villains, from Classic Dom Cummings to Door Matt Hancock, the end result is a brilliantly entertaining chronicle of another tumultuous year on these benighted islands. John Crace is the Guardian's parliamentary sketch writer, author of the Digested Read columns and a contributor to GQ. He is also the author of many books including Decline and Fail and I, Maybot. He is an ardent supporter of Tottenham Hotspur FC and has written several books about the club including Vertigo: One Football Fan's Fear of Success and Harry's Games: Inside the Mind of Harry Redknapp. Viv Groskop is a writer, critic, broadcaster and stand-up comedian. Young Southpaw chats to Kevin Crace and gets the skinny on his legendary label, Humbug Records. Ignored in their native country, the label was nevertheless home to some of the finest eccentric British songwriters - Captain Sensible, Martin Newell, Simon Turner, Colin Lloyd Tucker, TV Smith... Some excellent records were made, along with homemade jam, early xmas parties, and the conviction/label motto that “two dozen people can’t be wrong”.  https://www.discogs.com/label/29069-Humbug-2   Kevin Crace: I wanted to create my own label and a label that was sort of themed, sort of stylized label. I was really listening to people like él Records. That’s really where I was coming from at that time. Me and my friends were some of the few people sitting around in London listening to él, listening to XTC, listening to this sort of esoteric pop music. And really I felt the world really needed that at that time. And I nicked a couple of the él artists, and was quite pleased to do so. Louis Philippe came and joined me and I did some work with Simon Turner, The King Of Luxembourg. I loved él. There were probably very few people who were ever listening to it, if I’m being honest, it was so specialized. It didn’t represent anything else that was going on in the music world at that time, but it just really worked for me, it was so beautiful. And as much as I’d come from a punk background, and an electronic background, and an indie background, I really like things like The Ink Spots. I love some of those old classic bands that had just been totally forgotten at that stage. So when 1992 came around, I started to look at acts to sign for Humbug Records and I found that there was this whole amazing selection of great, great British singer-songwriters that were homeless. They weren’t able to make money, they weren’t able to get signed, and they certainly weren’t able to get any recognition in the media for how great they were. So to some extent, there was an endless list of people that I could have signed as an independent at that stage.   So I started off, the first signing was Captain Sensible. I love The Damned. For me, they were my childhood band. They were the punks, not the Pistols, they were the real punks. And Captain had split with The Damned at that time, he’d been apart from them for a number of years, he was creating this wonderful, wonderful pop music. Just simply brilliant. That it was almost impossible to get anybody to listen to. That was always the problem. With Captain, with Humbug, with all of these, it was a very difficult time to get the media to support you. Because at that time there wasn’t really the respect shown to the great British artists.

Amal Mattu gives his thoughts on why we actually get sued for missed MI. Is it the patient who has an impeccable workup with shared decision making? Or are there other factors/patient characteristics that commonly show up in lawsuits?  In part 2, we talk with Mike Weinstock about criticism of his paper How Do We Balance the Long-Term Health of a Patient With the Short-Term Risk to the Physician?    Episode contents Frontmatter ERcast is now part of the  Hippo Education family Early bird discount for Essentials of Emergency Medicine ends soon   Part one. Amal Mattu on lawsuits for missed myocardial infarction Do we mitigate medico-legal risk if we use a validated decision instrument or pathway? Amal feels that we do. You are applying validated literature to your practice. Problems arise when the score, HEART for example, is miscalculated or guessed at. If you're going to use a protocol or score, be sure you're using it correctly What are the things that Amal sees as common factors that lead to 'missed MI' lawsuits? Misread EKGs Young women presenting with atypical symptoms (atypical chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue) Young patients Upper abdominal pain, especially without abdominal tenderness Diagnosing a patent with 'reflux' when the patient was actually having an acute coronary syndrome. Inferior MIs in particular may masquerade as reflux symptoms or the patient with ischemia may have concomitant (true) reflux. In 2015, Amal discussed his pathway for evaluating ED chest pain patients. Here is the protocol Part two. Mike Weinstock on risk of CRACE (Clinically Relevant Adverse Cardiac Event), criticism of How Do We Balance the Long-Term Health of a Patient With the Short-Term Risk to the Physician?  Original Episode air date October 30, 2017 We think we protect patients by admitting them to the hospital, but looking at the numbers, that might not be the case. The criticism of Mike’s paper that teased out the risk of CRACE in patients with non-ischemic interpretable EKGs and negative troponins, was that all patients were evaluated in the hospital. Did hospitalization confer some unmeasured benefit? Can we extrapolate that risk of CRACE in patients who have been hospitalized applies to discharged patients with the same profile? This is an ongoing debate, but the data is some of the best we have and can still inform discussions with patients. We don't sent patients home and tell them they have no disease, we send them home with a plan for continued evaluation. How does Mike use this information? If the ED workup shows a non-ischemic EKG and there are two negative serial troponins, he presents the option of an outpatient workup. A caveat to this is that access to rapid outpatient evaluation must be readily available. He advises the patient that the possibility of a CRACE is one in several thousand and, while being hospitalized may seem like the safest course of action, hospitalization itself is not without risk. We've all had moments when our mind has wandered during a Wagner opera, a Bruckner symphony or perhaps a long Mozart recitative. Some of us have even dozed off. But maybe we shouldn’t beat ourselves up when our thoughts drift to a grocery list or an e-mail we forgot to send earlier. Boredom in the concert hall may actually be a good thing, says John Crace, a features writer for the Guardian newspaper. In a recent article he argued that the slow, tedious moments in classical music make the exciting ones that much better. Among the works Crace cited is Wagner's six-hour Parsifal, which puts extremely high demands on modern listeners. "There's an hour-and-a-half of absolutely sublime music, which makes it all worthwhile," he told host Jeff Spurgeon. "And then there are bits, especially in the second act, when my mind starts to wander." It probably was the fault of Wagner – not the listener or the performer. "He expected his audiences to come along for the ride with him," Crace continued. "And I don’t think audiences are always prepared to do that." But other industry-watchers disagree that the blame rests with the composer. "Before I would go attacking the repertoire per se, I would first take a look at the performance," said Ben Finane, editor-in-chief of Listen magazine. "I think it’s incumbent upon the singers to establish good chemistry on stage for those [Mozart] recitatives. It’s incumbent upon the conductor to keep things moving, and when that happens, I’m not dosing off." In 2011, BBC Music Magazine asked 10 leading music critics to name the most boring masterpieces in classical music. Responses included Mahler's Eighth Symphony, Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, Vivaldi's Gloria and several operas: Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Puccini's Madam Butterfly and Rossini's Cenerentola, among others. "There was no common thread, which shows that one man’s meat is another man’s poison," said Jeremy Pound, the magazine's deputy editor. Wagner has frequently come in for criticism, and some critics say it's a rare opera of his that couldn't be improved by taking 20 minutes (or more) off the running time. "That’s the trouble with Wagner is there’s so much good stuff in there but you have to sit through the dreary stuff in between," noted Pound. Crace believes that opera is a challenge because, unlike a play, it's difficult to cut in performance. "No one would dream of performing Hamlet at five hours," he said. "But there is a feeling in opera that somehow there’s an irreverence attached if every note of every bar is not included." Perhaps the media has unfairly hyped epic works and created unreasonable expectations in audiences, said Pound. But just as important to realize is that, with age, a listener's concept of time starts to change. "What was boring to me 20 years ago now I absolutely adore," Pound added. Listen to the segment above and tell us: Are there pieces that sometimes make your mind wander? Leave your comments below.
