Spent the holidays in Portland with the family, had some good adventures at the record shops and thrift stores - one of these records I pulled out from underneath an old rug at a Goodwill for a dollar. Was fun getting back into the sale bins and antique stores rather than just shopping at the fancy places. Grabbed all of these while on the trip, with one being gifted to me by the homie while there. Now it's a New Year and the other side of Los Angeles is burning up and Trump begins his reign in under two weeks. Hope these tunes bring some type of calm for a few moments in between all the horrible things in the world. Tracklist: Baba Yaga, Bronx River Parkway, Johnny Frigo Sextet, Marva Josie, Ed Bennett, Stanley Cowell, The Piano Choir, the Cosmic Tones Research Trio, Eje Thelin Group

More and more, I've been collecting solo piano records, I imagine partly because I grew up listening to my mom play piano and partly because my ears have slowed down a bit as I've gotten older. Here's a first short stack of some favorites, which won't be the last. I have continued to be working with just one needle for most of this month, and this "mix" was admittedly done on just one turntable. But I just got my replacement styluses yesterday and I will be getting back to the usual programming soon! This remarkable album is The Jazz Show's further tribute to Black History Month. It is reflective of the changing social mores of African-Americans during a volatile period of American History. It was recorded in 1969 and the climate in the USA was shaken by the assassinations of President John Kennedy and later his brother Bobby, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King coupled with the Vietnam War. The basic band here included Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and his co-leader, tenor saxophonist Harold Land.. Two fine pianists split the chores here, Kenny Barron and Stanley Cowell,. The bassist is Herbie Lewis and the drummer , Joe Chambers. Augmenting the group is Wally Richardson on guitar, and Candido Camero on congas. A four voice female choir is added and importantly the magnificent voice of one of the great soul and r&b singers, Gene McDaniels. McDaniels also co-wrote several songs on the set. The album reflects the times and is a powerful document the title is "Now!". It's tonight's Jazz Feature.

Eric Wyatt is a saxophonist who plays tenor, alto, and soprano sax. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Eric was taught music by his dad, Charles Jolly Wyatt, who played in the army band in Germany. His dad moved to Harlem in the early 50's just in time to play with many of the world's greatest players. Eric can recall stories of his dad taking him to concerts where he would sometimes drive the band members in the family station wagon. Eric at 11 years old drove with his father in 1972 to Storrs, CT with bassist Larry Ridley and pianist Albert Dailey. The band leader was Eric's godfather Sonny Rollins. Jim Hall was on the gig as well. This inspired Eric at a young age to hear his first live concert. Some of his dad's friends were Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, Gary Bartz, Big Nick Nicholas, Gilley Coggins, Wilber Ware, and Dizzy Gillespie. Eric went with his dad to see Miles Davis at the Bottom Line club and went backstage after the gig. Eric began on alto and studied at Kingsborough Community College. He also went to Lehman college where he studied with pianist Stanley Cowell. He had some opportunities early in his career to write and license an original song to channel 5 in NY for a tv news show called Black News with host Bill McCreary in 1985. He went on to switch to tenor after his dad passed in July 1989. He met and studied with a Brooklyn legend named Arthur Rhames who inspired him. The lessons he learned from Arthur helped to put Eric on the right track. Eric started playing in Europe as a leader in Sept 1996 performing in Paris, France at the La Villa Jazz Club. Dany Michel brought him there 2 times and Eric made connections in Europe and took his quintet to the Half Note Jazz Club in 1998 and 1999. He has played as a leader in Moscow, Russia, as well as in Slovakia, Prague, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Athens in Greece, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. He has 5 recordings as a leader and has played as a sideman on CDs with Kenny Garrett, Jeff Tain Watts, Bob Crenshaw, Al Foster, Rufus Reid, Warren Wolf, Wallace Roney, and Steve Jordan. His Cds currently out today are Borough Of Kings, Positone, Look to the Sky, and The Golden Rule 4 Sonny, and A Song of Hope. In this episode, Eric shares his background, education, and musical journey. “Of all of the guests I have had on my show whom I have had the great fortune to know personally, I believe Dmitri Matheny would count as the oldest of friends since my association with him goes back at least to early 1983 - at Interlochen Arts Academy . When we were both living in Boston, I was the pianist with a wonderful group he organized. I have to say, without reservations, that not only is Dmitri a superb all around musician but is one of the most organized and conscientious people in the arts I have ever known and it is a rare thing indeed when those coexist in the same soul. He was able to get us a lot gigs in that band and he is that rare artist who also happens to have a business sense. He also happened to have made his instrumental speciality one of my favorite of all the horns: the flugelhorn. (And made what I still consider the greatest Christmas Jazz album , to which I contributed an arrangement) https://dmitrimatheny.bandcamp.com/album/santas-got-a-brand- new-bag You will note that we talk a lot in this episode about the music and musicians we love. I truly believe that to be the best artist one can be requires finding an individual, you can say a mentor, to help be a guide. This is education of the highest sort and of course can happen either in or outside of an institution. This is a very old school, "apprenticeship" method and I can't imagine having gone about things in any other way. One of the advantages of having that one mentor like this is that you are getting a partial glimpse into that mentor's mind on a one- to-one, intimate level, something I can't see happening to the same effect in a crowded classroom. In Dmitri's case this mentor was none other than the great Art Farmer, no less. In my case it was pianist/composer Stanley Cowell. Of course it is a truism that sometimes the best performers aren't always the best teachers; in my case I was most fortunate that the two coincided., since Cowell remains one of my favorite pianists. We talk a lot about Art Farmer on this episode and you will know why if you know Farmer's playing. I really enjoyed this conversation; it was like a reunion of sorts after about two decades and it was one that was a joyous occasion. One of the reasons his business sense was so welcome, at least in the case of our kind of music, is that he would show up to a gig or a session and everything was so well planned and executed in terms of logistics that you could really be most free, let go, and blow, like the old expression, "that cat's charts play themselves." Dmitri Bio Winner of NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year honors in the Seattle Earshot Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music , Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, releasing eleven CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.” Links to Dmitri’s beautiful works: Website http://www.dmitrimatheny.com Tour https://www.dmitrimatheny.com/tour Touring History https://www.dmitrimatheny.com/touring-history Biography http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/biography Music http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/music Videos http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/videos Discography http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/discography Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitri_Matheny Instagram http://instagram.com/dmitrimatheny Twitter https://twitter.com/dmitrimatheny YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/papillonrecordings https://dmitrimatheny.bandca --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/support

Mitch's Note on this episode: "As we find ourselves in the middle of Season Two of our podcast, Journey Of An Aesthete I thought I should like to record a second solo episode which I guess means me sitting in front of the microphone and speaking all alone with the listeners/audience. I always get really nervous with these episodes as, speaking historically I have done very little in the way of public speaking like this, by which I mean it has happened so infrequently that I don't feel as practiced as I should like - though this podcast itself is making up for lost time. It isn't that I have a phobia or fear of public speaking - in truth whenever I do it I feel at least moderately comfortable - it is just that it is a conviction of mine, whether founded or not, that one always does something best the more they have done it. I really don't know much about being a "natural" or whatever the term is. Alongside that vein I thought I would play just a little bit of piano, in this case the first (and in part the only) music I have committed to composing in the times since late March or early April. It promises to be a much longer piece, and aside from the somber tone of the opening that you will hear here, will have as many passages that are upbeat, even joyful in the fullness of the completed work. I gathered some selections to read on this, our second solo show. I always have a deep feeling of indebtedness to others, thinker and artists that have come before me and I always to try to utilize my show as a platform to honor them. When I am forced to talk about my own piano playing I always try and mention my debt to my teacher Stanley Cowell, to name but one example. But some influences are people whom I have never met; I only know the works authored by the creator, not the creator herself. I have always felt that "the work" this might be the "best" part of themselves, which, though might be controversial to say (even though daily news reports sort of confirm my theory. And I mean no disrespect to any family members or loved ones of artists who really feel that the artist in their life is really great as a human being, never mind what they have made or that they are also known in public). I read Elizabeth Bishop's One Art which for me is a truly perfect poem which is saying a lot. I then read one of the first life changing books I ever encountered, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, by Shunryu Suzukim book I was most fortunate to encounter at the age of 13 or 14 and which has accompanied me on just about every "stage" of my life until the present at age fifty-one. I do read it as a beautiful work of art, even poetry. I don't know if this is the correct or, in Suzuki's common formulation, the "right understanding" to read it in such a way but for what it's worth I also happen to think it accurate in many respects as a document of our daily lives, speaking in a broad register, thus making it in at least one instance a confirmation of Keat's proposition of Truth and Beauty being synonymous. The book Foregone Conclusions has a review from The New Republic that I uncovered from wayback in 1995: https://newrepublic.com/article/63010/the-illusion-fate The Frank Loesser letter is a hoot and very funny. Its prankish and insouciant tone I feel has some seriousness in calling into question our received categories of artistic evaluation more generally even as I am not now prepared to take on fully the "populism" (egalitarianism?) of Loesser's narrator in the letter. As far as the arts go, I have no caution. I love all of them without reservations, enthusiasm that I hope is expressed in episodes like this one.” Links to Mitch’s Body of work:Journey of an Aesthete Podcast http://themoderatecontrarian.blogspot.com https://mitchhampton.bandcamp.com https://www.patreon.com/journeyofanaesthete --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message

For my guest today it is playing free music with Marion Brown or in Detroit where the spirits of Elvin, Tommy Flanagan and Yusef Lateef breeze by with a word of wisdom. Maybe it was with Rashan Roland Kirk back when Universities like Oberlin College could bring in a Cecil Taylor or Horace Tapscott for a year residency. Bands of younger musicians would form under their leadership. Because there were places to play cats could get loose on the bandstand at Slugs with Charles Tolliver or Jimmy and Tootie Heath. Late shows with Woody Shaw and long before our mothers cried with Sonny Fortune. The most spiritual music is created by my guest. He is patient and can also real off flurries of notes. He understands time and place. The opportunities that presented themselves to his generation. He was co-founder of The Strata East label which fused the language of swing and bebop with blues and soul. The music on this label had an urgency to it that spoke to the loss of lives- Dr. King, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy and John Coltrane. The seeming upward mobility of a musician cutting albums and touring. Reinventing themselves to sustain their legacy and more importantly the music. As we all know, it's a jazz life. This is a wonderful album by piano great Renee Rosnes who was born in Saskatchewan and raised in North Vancouver. Renee by the time this was recorded in 2003 in Vancouver had "made it" in New York. She had gone there earlier and by the time she returned to Vancouver to record this beautiful date she had played with trumpeter John Faddis, saxophonists Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson and bassist Buster Williams and many others and had recorded a series of albums on Blue Note! This date was a reunion of sorts. Alto and soprano saxophonist Campbell Ryga was always one of her favorites and she had also had a musical and personal relationship with drummer Rudy Petchauer. The great bassist Neil Swainson was in town and available so this band was ready. They recorded the whole date at CBC Studios in Vancouver and it was very briefly available by the CBC. Now it is a very rare item. It is first class music and demonstrates without a doubt that Vancouver has produced so many fine Jazz players. The album is a fine balance between original tunes by Ryga and Rosnes and mixed with one by Monk, Buster Williams and pianist Stanley Cowell and ends with the beautiful standard by Alec Wilder called "While We're Young". Deep Cove is the name of the album and is our second Jazz Feature dedicated to great female Jazz instrumentalists.

The sixth episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with pianist Stanley Cowell. He’s a jazz veteran who made his recorded debut in 1967, on Marion Brown's albums Now What? and Three for Shepp. He’s also worked with Max Roach, Gary Bartz, Bobby Hutcherson, and the Heath Brothers, among others, and he co-founded the Strata-East label with trumpeter Charles Tolliver in the 1970s. In recent years, he retired from teaching at Rutgers University, and has assumed a more active recording and performing role; in 2015, he put out a solo album, Juneteenth, and in 2017, he released a quartet disc, No Illusions. In our interview, Cowell discusses his early career, his 1970s work as a solo artist and as part of the Piano Choir, his time as an educator, his fascination with electronic music and how he’s imported that interest into his own work, and much more. It’s a really interesting conversation I’ve been wanting to have for several years, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Pinch punch first of the month, tis the season of the mad March hare. Days getting brighter, staying lighter, then in a few weeks the clocks go back, and hey, we're living in a different world. All of which may seem like a strange rumination if you're living in Kuala Lumpa or even L.A., but life in a temperate zone like London pivots around such seasonal adjustments. It had been a raw day, windy, with the last throes of Winter wreaking havoc with anyone dressing according to how the day looked from behind glass. After nightfall everything usually calms down, though there had been an aberrational thunderstorm after the sun had gone down, a brief freak-out of nature. However by the time I was riding South the roads had by and large dried, with just the odd puddle to swerve reminding me of the earlier deluge. So onwards and upwards for The Cosmic Jam. You know what? I'm so grateful to everyone that commented here or on my Facebook page after my mild crisis of confidence last week, all those positive affirmations are hugely appreciated. Faith restored, and once again eager to let the music take your mind, (and mine!). (Not forgetting heart, soul, toes and any other bits it might reach....) So I'm listening back as I write, and I think it's fair to say that the opening string of soulful ditties that lead off this week's show act like a soft start, a gentle intro, all gloriously mid-tempo and full of uplifting warmth. Soooo happy to already have something fresh from Jarrod Lawson, though that's hardly fair on the actual artist in question, trumpeter Farnell Newton, but Lawson's presence definitely steals the spotlight. "Peace and Love" has that Dilla-ish off kilter bounce, a righteous message, sublime harmonies, and glorious trumpet from Mr. Newton whose contribution should really not be eclipsed by the man of the moment. Miles Bonny, I remember being heavily into his "Closer Love" EP back in '07, but strangely I hadn't touched down on anything from his "Lumberjack Soul" album from a 2011...never too late to remedy a notable omission, and "Learning To Fly" is a worthy contender. Finally Rhonda Thomas', the album slightly underwhelmingly called "Vinyl Daze", has some tracks that I like well enough and others like "Reach" which I consider to be top drawer... and they keep getting better the more I listen, which is a good sign. Then we twist...... who'd want to stay in that comfortable Soul groove for too long? Vanessa Freeman's new project Gomo, which I somewhat misleadingly dubbed Gomo Mondo on the show, when actually the album is called "Mondo Romance". Get it? At least I do now....and the music, which climbs to a nice altitude with tunes like "Breathless" combining jazz elements with a new school sensibility, and V's voice which blossoms and grows ever more wondrous....nuff said. Native Dancer, cosmic, strong.... "Speaking Of Happiness" wrought from the best part of the weave, made of the most soulful material, a truly classic cut. Stanley Cowell... a pianist whose compositions and evergreen approach to the music called Jazz should be no stranger to Cosmic Jam listeners. Though some vinyl jazz heads may have prized his contributions to the Strata East stable and maybe his awesome "New World" album for the Galaxy label, they may have missed or not even realised his ever expanding oeuvre of CD only releases, many for the Steeplechase label. The album "Mandara Blossoms" features vocalist Karen Francis throughout, and as it was kind of extended by both bass and drum solos I did a crude edit of "A Whole New World" for broadcast purposes, hope nobody's offended, kind of sacrilegious I know, but too many tunes to bless the session with! Like "Señor Zamora", Harold Vick's Latin fused thoroughbred for Strata East, Joe Bonner on Fender Rhodes, ouch!! Too tough. Keeping the Latin tinge, Fertile Ground's "Peace And Love" had been in my head all day, they've deservedly had a revival at Forge Towers of late; the band was mainly the project of James Collins who played keys and wrote most of the tunes however this one was penned by Navasha Deya who fronted the band and partnered James in love, life and music until they parted ways and Fertile Ground were no more. However their legacy deserves attention, in the wake of so much interest in "Spiritual Jazz" and the kind of community led projects the likes of Horace Tapscott et al were at the forefront of, we shouldn't ignore those who carried that torch into the modern era, themselves struggling with the realities of making spiritual music for a commercial music marketplace. Poncho Sanchez, whenever I mention him in these notes I'm reminded of the day when he and his band stepped out of a tour bus to play at Dingwalls in Camden Lock, some serious L.A. latinos with beards to shame most hipsters. The Banda brothers on timbales and bass!! They were as good as it gets in Latin Jazz, tunes like "Ican" were the reason we went out of our way, and way over our budget, to book them for our Sunday afternoon jazz-dance session. They were happy, in fact so happy they celebrated the occasion with the tune "A Night In London" on their Chile Con Soul release. The Ray Stephen Oche tune is an old favourite, however the African stream flows on with the two tunes that follow, the incredible Ndikho Xaba which starts off the second hour and a tune from the Ice album which had been languishing in my collection for many years without me exploring beyond the funky classic "Racubah", and in many ways I vastly prefer "Ozan Koukle". Bongos, Rhodes, solos...a la bit (Afro)acid-jazz, but lovely all the same, particularly the chanted refrain. Out of Africa to ...... Stereolab, an odd insertion I agree, but it does kind of work, and it gets even odder by following on with Maze....I just had to do it. And then Hey Jude?? Yes, well, Edu Lobo's version is sublime..... Finally we get some boogie groove, with Japanese jazz-funkers Casiopea making a long overdue appearance on the show, followed by my favourite "AOR disco" acquisition of late, the Sweet Vendetta album from Adrian Gurvitz, Adrian straight outta Stoke Newington, has a career with stints alongside powerhouse drummer Buddy Miles (Hendrix Band Of Gypsies) and then with Ginger Baker. So no surprise that this, his first solo album was made with some top notch U.S. session players, including drummers Jeff Pocaro and Ed Greene who features on this tune "Untouchable And Free" which I first heard somebody play at Danny Psychemagick's Magic Forest festival last summer, it was a tune that stuck in my head, though I didn't actually know what it was, didn't ask, and then lo and behold, I pick up the Gurvitz album for a paltry sum, get it on the turntable, and Side One Track One.... it's that tune!! Love it when that happens , oh blessed serendipity! Nice re-edit of Pacific Jam follows, primed for the dance floor, that tune has always been big in my box! Rhyze needs a pitch down, but is even punchier with the bpm lowered and "Free And Easy" suddenly sounds spectacular... a nice way to finish. Loved this one.... Until next time, peace love and pyjamas! P.x 1. Farnell Newton ft. Jarrod Lawson&Tony Ozier - Peace And Love 2. Miles Bonny - Learning How To Fly 3. Rhonda Thomas - Reach 4. Gomo - Breathless 5. This wonderful recording is led by one of the most distinctive tenor saxophonists in Jazz, Clifford Jordan. Here he leads two quartets each playing original material composed by Jordan himself and the individual band members. The people involved in Quartet #1 are Jordan on tenor saxophone, Stanley Cowell on piano, Bill Lee (Spike Lee's dad) on bass and the great Billy Higgins on drums. One composition by Jordan, two by Cowell and two by Lee are represented. The music is pure, lyrical and organic. Quartet #2 has Jordan and Higgins with Cedar Walton replacing Cowell and Sam Jones replacing Lee. Jordan is represented compositionally by the album's title track (Glass Bead Games) and Walton penned two and a Sam Jones blues (One For Amos) closes the set. Again the music is passionate, organic and unified. It just flows and has a quality that is missing from most Jazz recordings, a great feeling of a band! This music came out on a musician-run label called "Strata-East" and it is now hard to find. It was recorded in New York on October 29,1973 and in those days it was like a breath of fresh air. It is just that today....timeless music and the best of Jazz.
