With a focus on education tailored to modern challenges, this conversation explores how hybrid learning models, leadership training, and organizational investment are reshaping nonprofit leadership. Dr. Laura Deitrick, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego, joins us to dive deep into the challenges and opportunities surrounding nonprofit leadership development. The lively chat sheds light on the unique pressures nonprofit leaders face, the evolving nature of nonprofit education, and the critical need to invest in leadership growth for a sustainable and impactful future.Dr. Deitrick begins with a reminder, "Nonprofit work is a hard place to lead—metrics are tough, expectations are high, and the challenges are complex. But it's also incredibly rewarding." The discussion explores the historical underpinnings of nonprofit leadership programs, the disruptions caused by COVID-19, and the profound effects of the "silver tsunami" and the Great Resignation on talent acquisition.Dr. Deitrick puts forth a vital insight: "We need to stop apologizing for paying and developing talent in the nonprofit sector. Expertise matters, and we have to own that." Her sentiment captures the importance of creating clear career pipelines, fostering peer learning, and addressing misconceptions about the sector's professionalism.Dr. Deitrick offers a hopeful perspective on cultivating talent, driving systemic change, and breaking free from outdated norms. Benjamin and Tarrah Deitrick have both been in ministry since the early 2000s. They began by serving as missionaries in the United States in Various capacities in Eagles' Wings Ministries in the Greater Buffalo NY area under the direction of Bishop Robert Stearns. In 2011, they felt the call to move to Ann Arbor, MI., and serve alongside Apostle Barbara Yoder in Shekinah Church. Here they served 10 and a half years in various capacities again. In January 2022, their season of pastoring ended and they were in another transition. At the time they transitioned out of Shekinah, Tarrah was the Head Pastor and Benjamin was the Leader/Visionary Apostle. After seeking the Lord for many months, Benjamin and Tarrah founded Ignite Ministries International in Maricopa, AZ. Benjamin and Tarrah have three children, (their princesses) Faith (10), Lily (8), and Sophia (3). Their hearts are to see a return to authentic, “ACTS 2” Christianity in their generation and ignite lives for Jesus from, “the neighborhood, to the Nations.” To learn more, please visit: https://igniteministriesinternational.com LISTEN NOW AT: Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-blacksmith-chronicles-podcast/id1485445641 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4OmhF96FBZ7wz6umnfiMnT Destiny Image: https://destinyimagepodcastnetwork.squarespace.com/#/the-blacksmith-chronicles/ Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/84241b46-96c3-4aed-a483-a003fd5ea74c/the-blacksmith-chronicles-podcast Ryan Johnson — www.ryanjohnson.us RJM YouTube Channel — https://bit.ly/34Vxbgl Ryan Johnson Ministries Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/officialryanjohnsonministries The Blacksmith Chronicles Podcast Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/RJMinistries Instagram — ryanjohnsonministries Twitter — https://twitter.com/RJM_Blacksmith EMAIL — info@ryanjohnson.us TikTok — @officialrjm
May is joined by Dr. Laura Dietrick, an expert from the Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego, to delve into leadership within the nonprofit sector. Together, they explore two impactful initiatives offered by the university that equip students with comprehensive knowledge about managing a nonprofit organization. By shedding light on common misconceptions associated with nonprofits, students receive valuable training opportunities at the Nonprofit Institute and the Nonprofit Leadership and Management graduate program. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] Dr. Laura shares an overview of her responsibilities at the University of San Diego and discusses the Nonprofit Institute [04:43] Explanation of how nonprofits operate [07:02] The misnomer that nonprofits exist only to be altruistic and why it's important to talk about the impact of the organization [16:00] Dr. Laura shares details of the Nonprofit Leadership and Management graduate program [22:16] Students are learning many aspects of nonprofits and are working on real-time projects [28:26] Dr. Laura explains what type of personality would thrive working for a nonprofit and also why it can be a difficult space KEY TAKEAWAYS: Those who criticize the compensation of a nonprofit should recognize the importance of adequately paying nonprofit leaders, just as you would a manager in a for-profit business. Nonprofits should promote the impact their programs have. That would be more effective than talking about how the donations are spent. Individuals who are problem solvers and can mediate between groups and boards would enjoy and do well working at a nonprofit. ABOUT THE HOST: May Harris has been a pioneer of nonprofit law practice for over a decade, having founded For Purpose Law Group in April 2012. She serves the nation's nonprofit sector with unparalleled expertise, prioritizing her client's missions, visions, and values. She specializes in nonprofit & tax-exempt organizations, social enterprise & business law, and estate planning & charitable giving. May received her undergraduate degree from the University of Utah before pursuing and obtaining her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego in 2000. She practiced intellectual property law for a large biotech company for several years before a fateful flyer came home in her son's lunchbox. His school was looking for parents who were licensed attorneys and could form a nonprofit on their behalf. May agreed to form the organization and then found herself serving as director of its board. With her legal expertise and newfound knowledge of nonprofit law, she realized the nonprofit sector was severely underserved in legal representation. She decided to fix this. She returned to school, earning her Master of Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the University of San Diego in. With this education, she, along with some of her fellow graduates, founded For Purpose Law Group (FPLG). In the subsequent decade, May has molded FPLG into the “go-to” law firm for nonprofits in Southern California. The firm is constantly expanding its locations and service areas, with the ability to assist organizations across the United States.
You've never heard a tale like that of guitarist Rick Deitrick. A product of the '60s, Rick went from playing the accordion as a kid in Ohio to joining a rock band and performing at love-ins throughout Southern California. Once he found a $100 Yamaha acoustic at a pawn shop, his life took a new turn: He'd take his guitar (sans case) out on hikes and create acoustic instrumentals influenced by his surroundings. The byproduct of these hikes was a series of self-released albums, now reissued as a boxed set by Tompkins Square Records. Quirky backstory aside, it's gorgeous music that has stood the test of time. This interview has it all: 1960s love-ins, a cranky John Fahey, a two-foot-tall chipmunk, a guitar sacrificed in a fit of rage, and a musician who continues to march to the beat of his own drummer. The difference between mental health and mental illness is something that Jamie focuses on, and in this episode we take a journey with Jamie to understand this difference. We hear about Jamie's journey and what it has looked for her to address her own mental illness, and how she has sought to be a central figure for helping persons understand more deeply about how to address mental illness, but also to care for their own mental health ( as a generalized way of caring for themselves. Jamie brings her experience of teaching and practicing sports psychology at the collegiate level to help us understand how we can take mental health and mental illness seriously. She notes how it begins with education, and continues as we never try to fix others problems but help them to recognize they have support in the midst of their struggles. Trigger Warning: We talk about suicide and mental illness in this episode, use self-care when listening. https://instagram.com/coffee.andcardio (@coffee.andcardio on Instagram) Don't forget to join our Active Faith Community on Facebook to share your journey and encourage and support others in their active journeys as well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/999882660818141 (Active Faith Facebook Community) Support me and this podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/runninrev (https://www.patreon.com/runninrev) Connect with Andrew: https://linktr.ee/runninrev (https://linktr.ee/runninrev) Background Music from Yevhen Lokhmatov, 'Race For Glory' http://www.melodyloops.com/tracks/race-for-glory/ (www.melodyloops.com/tracks/race-for-glory/) Granted permission to use this Music by Melody Loops and its licensees, including Andrew Ware.

“I'm screaming with everything in me that I need help and nobody can hear me.“ That sums up Susan Deitrick's first 20+ years. Susan's the epitome of the rebound effect. No matter how many times her identity is stripped away, she builds back stronger and better. Growing up in a family with violence and addiction, at the age of two she wanted to build an igloo, got to sleep in it and never wake up. During that same time she fell in love with God, where she learned what love was. In the refuge of God's love, Susan survived suicide attempts, rapes, and physical, verbal and emotional abuse from her family. Then, feeling dead and broken, God made it clear that he was still going to use her. She agreed to his plan, and God added a loving partner. Out of her pain and trauma, Susan had many years of “the best life ever.” Talking Points: - The benefits of hiding the truth from yourself. - The travesty of professionals pushing reality under the rug. - The choice that helped Susan get past her traumatic family experiences. - How learning to write in code became her escape to sanity. - The benefits of learning mind over matter. - The value of a vessel broken into fragments. - The magic of having an outlet she could control for her pain. - The benefits of being stoic. - The internal attitude you need to refuse to settle. - The top three concepts that help someone struggling. - What to expect with the cumulative effects of unresolved trauma. - Do we ever lose our identity? Or do we keep peeling off layers to find it? Bio Susan's life is a cornucopia of service — English teacher, school counselor, pastor, kid therapist, and soon-to-be podcaster — these are all iterations on her calling as a healer. God's smile is now shining through the fragments of her life, connecting the dots of her many personal and professional turns and helping make sense of her journey. While recovering from the recent loss of the love of her life, her spouse of 35 years, God's told her “The best is yet to come!” Since she doesn't argue with The Boss, she's ready to travel this final chapter together with God, and under God's amazing control. Phonics, the only effective way to teach reading is again become dominant. Our knowledge based education system has failed to educate 10’s of millions. Bruce believes that boys are particularly hard hit by the move away from phonics. Boys are devastated by their inability to learn reading and language. It makes it almost impossible to become a proficient reader. There’s no mystery about it. Once a kid learns how to read he can educate himself and really doesn’t need to go to school.
