Believe it or not, Brian and TJ sat down to do a FlyBy - not only that, they saw three movies starring one character; Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). They watched: 2016's Suicide Squad, based on the DC Comics supervillain team of the same name. Written and directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Cara Delevingne. Sadly they actually watched the extended version of this "movie." They followed up with a movie that went through an identity crisis in 2020's Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey or simply Birds of Prey based on the DC Comics team, the Birds of Prey and serves as both a spin-off and sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. And finally, they tackled the movie people on Twitter have been talking about for weeks (so why not add fuel to this fire); 2021's THE Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). Written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. Ever wonder what Gen Z is really up to? Well, it turns out that the kids are alright. We sat down with actress and singer Ella Jay Basco and aspiring beauty entrepreneur Lulu Grieco, both 15 year-old high school students who are navigating teenhood, social media, body image and beauty standards with absolute grace. They definitely inspire other kids their age, but we certainly walked away in awe of their mature outlook.
“I'm Brown & I'm Proud!” When you grew up, how were you taught to cherish and celebrate your natural skin? This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan offend approximately 1/7th of the world's population, which has historically gone very well. Ryan's love of fairy tale settings don't truck with Steve, who favors Disney's gritty, street-level crime drama Aladdin. Ryan gets vulnerable about the deterioration of his mental health in this dumpster fire world we have, and Steve, ever a good man and a good friend, reaches out. We encourage you to reach out too. Because everything sucks right now, and you need to connect with your fellow humans to survive. Also, this is the worst Disney princess ever. Aladdin (1992) - Disney d.

Wagering on elections is a lot like betting on sports. And in 2020, much of it is done on prediction markets -- sites that offer prediction exchanges on political outcomes. He chats with Will Jennings, Head of Public Engagement at Predictit.org and Jeff Joseph, Editorial Director and Publisher of Luckbox Magazine and host of The Political Trade podcast. Some things the Generals are pre-sold on, Harley Quinn getting her own movie is one of those things. Surrounding her with even more kick-ass women doubles the excitement. Throwing Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) into the mix is a cherry on top. Suffice to say this manic, Margot Robbie filled movie had a lot to live up to. So after having seen _Birds of Prey_, how did it do ? This will be very different to the typical movie reviews, or better yet, audio essays that Cinematic Doctrine has previously offered. However, a lot of the process going into this episode has remained the same. Daniel and I still did our research, we still prepared some talking points, we still approached Birds of Prey’s cultural talking points with a biblical perspective. Perhaps the biggest change you’ll notice between this episode and any other film-review offered from Cinematic Doctrine is that it will be far less eloquent. Even though, that’s fine. Most podcast aren’t eloquent. For this episode, Daniel and I will talk about our immediate thoughts on Birds of Prey and how it’s R-Rating might negatively impact its themes of women’s empowerment. We talk about its underwhelming opening weekend box office numbers and the many things keeping the Birds of Prey from taking flight. We dig into its connections with perhaps one of the worst superhero films ever made, Suicide Squad, and how that film may have impacted Birds of Prey in more negative ways than one. And finally, Daniel and I discuss the value of watching a film whose main character is a villain from start to finish, and lightly contrast that to last years breakout Comic Book movie Joker. Tune in weekly for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material. It features Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Ewan McGregor, and Chris Messina Directed by Cathy Yan Patreon: http://bit.ly/CinDocPatreon Facebook Group: http://bit.ly/CinDocFBGroup Letterboxd: http://bit.ly/LetterboxdCinDocList Website: CinematicDoctrine.com Email: CinematicDoctrine@Gmail.com Daniel's Twitter: @TomRhonda1Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/CinematicDoctrine)

They play Victor Zsasz and Cassandra Cain in the film and talk up their characters.
The storyline picks up with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) just following her dastardly dreamboat, The Joker, breaking up with her, with the spinout of their toxic relationship leaving her in shambles. An oft-unhinged club owner named Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), whose alter ego is another powerful villain in Gotham City known as Black Mask has secured a rare diamond worth so much that he could afford to up his protection racket operation to become the biggest crime kingpin in Gotham City. That diamond is stumbled onto and taken by a pickpocket extraordinaire named Cassandra Cain, who ends up swallowing it to avoid having to give it up when frisked by police, making her the most sought after person in the city, especially after Roman places a half-million-dollar bounty on her. All of this leads to Harley forming a ramshackle team of women with grievances with Black Mask to finally put an end to his murderous ways. That team includes Huntress, aka Helena Bertinelli (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a Punisher-type mafia princess-turned-vigilante who rides a motorcycle and shoots a crossbow - Black Canary, aka Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). Leading the case for the Gotham City Police Department is Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, and newcomer Ella Jay Basco portrays Cassandra Cain. Cathy Yan directs.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or simply Birds of Prey, is a 2020 American superhero film based on the DC Comics team Birds of Prey. It is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe, and a follow-up to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, and stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. The film follows Harley Quinn as she joins forces with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Black Mask. Robbie, who also serves as producer, pitched the idea for Birds of Prey to Warner Bros. in 2015. The film was announced in May 2016, with Hodson being hired to write the script that November, while Yan signed on to direct in April 2018. The majority of the cast and crew were confirmed by December 2018. Principal photography lasted from January to April 2019 in Downtown Los Angeles, parts of the Arts District, Los Angeles, and soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Additional filming took place in September 2019. Birds of Prey is the first DCEU film and the second DC Films production to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. The film had its world premiere in Mexico City on January 25, 2020, and was theatrically released in the United States in IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX on February 7, 2020. The film received praise from critics for its visual style, Yan's direction, and the performances of Robbie and McGregor, but criticism for the perceived lack of depth --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

He, and collaborators such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, changed forever just how relatable, impactful, and flawed yet noble characters in superhero stories - no matter the medium - could be. In this episode, the SSN Crew discusses Stan Lee's career and his impact on entertainment. In addition, we review Steve McQueen's new film "Widows," and discuss Channing Dungey's exit from ABC, the final upcoming season of "Game of Thrones," and how "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" might be Themyscira After Dark.
