Joe Forte dives DEEP this week with the singular and brilliant Oscar nominated duo behind Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt. The two discuss their unique partnership which started with a tremendous appreciation and equal love of film in their late teens. Joachim and Eskil are so eager and gracious to give such insight into their process and what they believe to be the importance of craft and how they shape a script that leads to Joachim's direction; starting with character and themes instead of plot. Not painting by numbers. And utilizing their individuality to craft a film. --- Looking for more support on your writing journey? Join Meg and Lorien inside TSL Workshops. John welcomes writer and director Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value, The Worst Person in the World) to ask, how do you introduce your characters and their world to the audience? Using the screenplay for Sentimental Value, Joachim lays out how he sets up his themes, characters, conflicts and narrative authority in the first few pages. We also look at Joachim's process of developing stories with his co-writer Eskil Vogt, and answer listener questions on endings, casting, and work-life balance. In our bonus segment for premium members, Joachim and John flip through how we present screenplays on screen, why Joachim translates his scripts in pre-production, and the one little detail you might not have noticed in Sentimental Value.

Her skal bl.a. Gjelsvik forelese, i tillegg til å intervjue Triers faste samarbeidspartner Eskil Vogt. (Her er hele programmet.)

The latest supernatural thriller from Norway entitled THE INNOCENTS (2022) joins both these horror subgenres together and gives a new spin on the malevolence of a young unformed mind with powers they cannot control. From Wikipedia: “Lonely young girl Ida and her older sister Anna have moved into an apartment with their parents. Anna suffers from nonverbal autism, Ida having to take responsibility for her. One day Ida meets Ben and the two strike up a friendship. Strange things begin to happen after the two explore the apartment complex's basement. Somehow Anna seems to be able to form a spiritual connection with another girl named Aisha who lives nearby. Soon Anna begins to speak again.”Starring a very young cast from Norway, the film was directed and written by Eskil Vogt, who gained some notice for his debut film THELMA from 2017. THE INNOCENTS has been reviewed by over a hundred English language critics who have generally given it a very positive review. Your co-hosts take a look at this film and give their critique.

Norwegian writer/director Eskil Vogt (on both solo projects and those co-written with frequent collaborator Joachim Trier) is intrigued by the idea of “coming of age”...regardless of what age that might be. So it makes sense that he “felt seen” at an early age by The Breakfast Club's Brian Johnon (Anthony Michael Hall). More recently, Eskil saw himself in Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) from The Souvenir Parts I and II, which focuses on a more grown-up coming of age. This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a Q&A from the 51st New Directors/New Films with Eskil Vogt, director of The Innocents, moderated by FLC's Director of Programming Dennis Lim and a programmers preview of the 29th New York African Film Festival. Perhaps best known as the co-screenwriter of acclaimed Norwegian director Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World), Eskil Vogt proves himself to be a filmmaker of astonishing skill and elemental force in his own right with this daring supernatural thriller. Set during the summer at an apartment complex surrounded by an ominous, fairy-tale-like forest, The Innocents follows the sinister, increasingly alarming interactions of a group of prepubescent children: Ida, feeling ignored next to her autistic older sister Anna; the bullied Ben; and the angelic Aisha, who appears to communicate telepathically—and feel through—the nonverbal Anna. With unforgettable, dark images and fleet visual storytelling, Vogt's film pushes the “evil children” subgenre into more philosophical territory, creating a morally askew universe controlled by a child's primitive understanding of the world. The Innocents is now playing in our theaters. Go to filmlinc.org/innocents for showtimes and tickets. Before the Q&A, listen to a programmers preview of the 29th New York African Film Festival, now playing in our theaters and virtually nationwide through May 17. Aviso 3: las explicaciones de las categorías las desarrollo en el podcast, que si no esto habría sido una maldita Biblia.💥 Efectos visualesDUNEPaul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor y Gerd NefzerFree GuySwen Gillberg, Bryan Grill, Nikos Kalaitzidis y Dan SudickNo Time to DieCharlie Noble, Joel Green, Jonathan Fawkner y Chris CorbouldShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsChristopher Townsend, Joe Farrell, Sean Noel Walker y Dan OliverSpider-Man: No Way HomeKelly Port, Chris Waegner, Scott Edelstein y Dan SudickGANARÁ: DuneDEBERÍA GANAR: Dune🔊 SonidoDUNEMac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill y Ron BartlettBelfastDenise Yarde, Simon Chase, James Mather y Niv AdiriNo Time to DieSimon Hayes, Oliver Tarney, James Harrison, Paul Massey y Mark TaylorThe Power of the DogRichard Flynn, Robert Mackenzie y Tara WebbWest Side StoryTod A. A film from Norway about a young woman seeking fulfillment in relationships takes the conventions of romantic comedy and turns them over to reveal the male-centered trap underneath. The Worst Person in the World. Now, there's a title that will get your attention. But this new film from Norwegian director Joachim Trier is named ironically. It's not a portrait of an evil person at all, but of someone who is set up by the world she lives in to blame herself for everything. Julie, a medical student played by the excellent Renate Reinsve, suddenly realizes that she doesn't want to be a doctor after all, but would rather study the mind, in other words, become a psychologist. Then she changes her mind again and says she will pursue photography. As an audience, we might be tempted to see her as flaky, but the film makes us see that this kind of wavering is normal for someone in their 20s, especially someone in the upper middle class. The one element that does disturb Julie's focus is romance. Once again, normal. She loves the initial very blissful stage of connection with an attractive man, and of course this element includes sex, a pleasure that we all know is powerful. The subtle point we're made to realize is that the unspoken but real male social dominance makes it harder for women to navigate career and romance, and the one aspect the film beautifully portrays is how relationships inevitably become about the man's thoughts, desires, and overall narratives; automatically relegating women to a supporting role. This all might sound rather dry when I describe it, but Trier and his screenwriter, Eskil Vogt, weave a remarkably observant portrait of people trying to navigate the rules of the game, and Reinsve's performance is a constant revelation of female intelligence, desire, and frustration. Julie gets into a relationship with a well-known artist who is fifteen years her senior. The enjoyment of each other's company is genuine, but she ends up feeling like a spectator of her own life. She eventually cheats on him with a married man she meets at a wedding reception that she's crashed, but rather than take this plot development for granted, the film beautifully conveys the gradual stages, from initial flirting while feeling a sense of taboo, to final acceptance of the need to be together, the peak being a long brilliant sequence in which everyone in the world stops in a freeze-frame while Julie runs through all these stationary figures to see her new lover. But we know—and this is another clever thing—that the same contradictions will arise again. When I thought about the film's clear-eyed view of patriarchy, I considered opening this review by saying, “What if Woody Allen were a feminist?” But that's actually selling this movie short. Yes, it's written and directed by men, and it doesn't have a radical style, but I rarely see films in which the intricacies of love, sex, and relationships in a male-dominated world, are so finely and compassionately exposed. The men in the film are not depicted as bad people, even though we know such men exist. Instead, everyone in this story is well-meaning, trying their best, but it's the unconscious assumptions and unspoken rules that are driving everything. The ads and previews try to tell us that this is a romantic comedy. Well, OK, but if so, it's the least consoling rom-com I've ever seen. It's frequently funny, but there are no jokes or gags. The humor springs from anxiety and loss. The Worst Person in the World, with its mocking title and lovely main character, may seem light-hearted on the surface, but it carries the weight of disappointed dreams.
