We all love stories—they are one of the most important ways that humans communicate. Stories create heroes to root for and villains to revile. Stories create realities and help us align our values and objectives with others. But how do stories change in a world that is awash with data and is overwhelmed by large tech companies that try to motivate—or manipulate–us with stories using data that we don't see and can't comprehend? To help answer these questions, we talked with Frank Rose about his recent book The Sea We Swim In: How Stories Work in a Data-Driven World. Frank's book is inspired by his Strategic Storytelling seminar at Columbia University and is a wonderful resource to help understand the power of narrative thinking. In addition to being a senior fellow at Columbia University School of the Arts, Frank is the director of Columbia's pioneering Digital Storytelling Lab and a frequent speaker on narrative thinking and on the power of immersive storytelling. Frank's writing and journalism career started in the punk scene at CBGB for The Village Voice and continued as a contributing editor at Esquire and then Wired. He has written several books including West of Eden about the early days of Apple Computer and The Art of Immersion about how the digital generation changed storytelling. We greatly enjoyed talking with Frank about one of our favorite subjects: telling stories in a data-driven world. If you enjoy our podcasts, please subscribe and leave a positive rating or comment. It's the power of narrative that shapes every aspect of our lives. We rush to tell stories to our friends and family to validate our experiences. We buy products and brands because of the story they tell us. We vote, make friends, and even enemies, because of the stories that we believe. Narrative has an emotional pull on us. Sometimes we take away joy, anger, laughter, or sadness. People don't rush out in large numbers to see PowerPoints, policy discussions, or even most documentaries. But they will react to drama, comedy, or horror. They will like or dislike social media, based on the stories they have ingested. It all sounds so simple, so logical, but it's often lost in the cacophony of noise, data, and information that surrounds us. Frank Rose writes about this in his new book The Sea We Swim In: How Stories Work in a Data-Driven World

The Sea We Swim In: How Stories Work in a Data-Driven World by Frank Rose About the Book: A practical guide to "narrative thinking," and why it matters in a world defined by data. In The Sea We Swim In, Frank Rose leads us to a new understanding of stories and their role in our lives. For decades, experts from many fields―psychologists, economists, advertising and marketing executives―failed to register the power of narrative. Scientists thought stories were frivolous. Economists were knee-deep in theory. Marketers just wanted to cut to the sales pitch. Yet stories, not reasoning, are the key to persuasion. Whether we're aware of it or not, stories determine how we view the world and our place in it. That means the tools of professional storytellers―character, world, detail, voice―can unlock a way of thinking that's ideal for an age in which we don't passively consume media but actively participate in it. Building on insights from cognitive psychology and neuroscience, Rose shows us how to see the world in narrative terms, not as a thesis to be argued or a pitch to be made but as a story to be told. Leading brands and top entertainment professionals already understand the vast potential of storytelling. From Warby Parker to Mailchimp to The Walking Dead, Rose explains how they use stories to establish their identity and turn ordinary people into fans―and how you can do the same. About the Author: Frank Rose is an author, essayist, and keynote speaker. A senior fellow at the Columbia University School of the Arts, he teaches global business executives as faculty director of its Strategic Storytelling program, presented in partnership with Columbia Business School Executive Education, and serves as awards director of its Digital Storytelling Lab. His previous book, The Art of Immersion: How the Digital Generation is Remaking Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and the Way We Tell Stories, was hailed by the International Journal of Advertising as "an essential overview" of the fundamental changes affecting media. Before moving to Columbia, Frank spent many years reporting on the impact of technology on media as a contributing editor at Wired and a contributing writer at Fortune before that. His 1989 best-seller West of Eden, about the ouster of Steve Jobs from Apple, was named one of the ten best books of the year by Businessweek. Among his other books is The Agency, an unauthorized history of the oldest and at one time most successful talent agency in Hollywood. And, interesting facts: he is a native of Virginia and graduated from Washington & Lee University with a degree in journalism and moved soon after to New York, where he got his start covering the punk scene at CBGB for The Village Voice, chronicling the emergence of Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Talking Heads. Frank started his career with the Village Voice covering the emerging mid-1970s New York music scene centered around CBGBs. He has written numerous articles for the likes of Rolling Stone, Fortune, Vanity Fair and Wired. He has written books about Apple and in his book the Art of Immersion, he explored the changing nature of storytelling in Hollywood and Madison Avenue. Currently he is a senior fellow at the Columbia University School of the Arts, he is faculty director of the executive education program Strategic Storytelling, presented in partnership with Columbia Business School. In this conversation, instead of looking forward to the future, we look back at past futures. A future proposed by the punk movement and the likes of Brian Eno and Malcolm McLaren and trace a trajectory outlined by advances in technology that transformed the media and entertainment industry despite their best intentions. We end looking at the present day world of Google, Facebook and Amazon and suggest we have reached an inflection point, where it might be time to take a look at what has been created and where we might all be headed.

Crossroads - the Columbia DSL @ the Film Society of Lincoln Center

The Columbia University School of the Arts' Digital Storytelling Lab has a new monthly podcast entitled Crossroads. A collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Crossroads is recorded in front a live audience at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Auditorium. The monthly podcast is a mixture of talks, interviews, fireside chats and lab project updates that explore new forms and functions of storytelling.  Our first episode was recorded earlier this year in front of a live audience at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Hosted by storytelling pioneer Lance Weiler, Director of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab, and Frank Rose, author of The Art of Immersion and Senior Fellow at Columbia University School of the Arts, the evening included a brief presentation on the “Digital Dozen” followed by two roundtable discussions inspired by its selections. Rose leads a conversation on journalism in the digital age with Adam Moss, Editor in Chief of New York, and Bill Wasik, deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine and author of And Then There's This. Both publications were honored in the Digital Dozen, New York for its National Magazine Award-winning interactive narrative “This Is the Story of One Block in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn” and the Times Magazine for its pioneering virtual reality report on the global refugee crisis, “The Displaced.” Lauren Cornell, Curator and Associate Director, Technology Initiatives at the New Museum and Co-curator of its highly successful 2015 Triennial, and Zach Kaplan, Director of the digital art organization Rhizome, a New Museum affiliate, then join Rose for a discussion of art and technology sparked by “Freedom,” an installation by Josh Kline that was commissioned for the Triennial and chosen by the Lab as one of its Digital Dozen. Welcome to episode #466 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. We live in tough times for advertising. Yes, it's still a critical component of our economy and a very effective way to reach, connect and build loyalty. There's just so much of it. We have moved from a scarcity model to an abundance model in a very short time. There are countless options that make the old "three network" television model seem like a dinosaur. Frank Rose believes that the best kind of advertising is about real experiences. The kind of experiences that are so highly immersive for the consumer, that they're as enthralled by it as they are with a great movie or book. How many brands can make that happen? A long time contributing editor to Wired, Rose is also an accomplished book author who sits at the intersection of technology, new media and entertainment. Recently he published an article titled, The Power of Immersive Media, in Strategy + Business. Enjoy the conversation... Recorded at Doc/Fest 2011. The mass media of the past century have been restrictive by nature, with audiences confined to a passive role- but that has now completely changed. The inclusive nature of the Internet invites open participation amongst storytellers and audiences alike, and that means putting the audience right and the centre of the action in a game-like fashion. Storytellers of every stripe will now have to learn a new grammar of storytelling, one that is only now being invented. The challenge for those working within the media industry is to keep up with these changes- and the question becomes, how can storytellers use the new possibilities at their disposal to their advantage?

A decade ago, the tools of communications belonged to a chosen few. Editorial control over newspapers, television and radio was in the hands of those professionals tasked with selecting content deemed worthy of the front page, the headline, the news bulletin. National newspapers and mass media channels were scarce resources. The stories they carried were linear and sequential. The 10 o'clock news was broadcast for an hour each evening at the same time. Important news was on the front page, above the fold. That was then, this is now. Immersive storytelling Today's world is nonlinear, filled with always-on devices giving anywhere, any time access to media generated by those of us with a Wordpress blog and a point of view. Storytelling has come full circle from the logical inevitability of the printed page to the random, emotionally binding, infinitely looping immersive stories of this fragmented age where anyone can create and re-purpose content, as did the bards of pre-literate eras. The implications of the transition from top-down to user-generated content is explored in detail by Frank Rose in his book The Art of Immersion. Rose identifies the roots of non-linear storytelling in the popular serials Charles Dickens published in the 1830's. But it was the creation of the hyper-links of the World Wide Web that blew the lid off linear narrative: Links change our relationship to information. They empower individuals and destroy hierarchies. Cinema directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Jean-Luc Goddard and David Lynch create immersive, non-linear forms of film. The unexpected juxtapositions, the startling elisions, the scenes out of sequence--asleep or awake, this is how we think, in a fast-dissipating vapor. The implication is that we live in a multiverse, where events occur simultaneously. As the Western-born Spiritual Adept Adi Da Samraj has written about photography: The human individual in the midst of Reality is like a camera in a room—perceiving everything from a fixed "point of view". But what does the room Really look like? The room can be viewed from every possible "point of view" in space-time—not merely from any particular "point of view", or even a finite collection of "points of view". Therefore, no "point of view" can reveal the room, or Reality Itself, because every "point of view" is limited and essentially self-referring. Frank Rose explores the art of immersive storytelling and the emerging transmedia methods that the best practitioners are developing in video games, advertising, movies, social media, television and more. Frank Rose Interview In August 2012 I met Frank at a Churchill Club event in Silicon Valley and took the opportunity to ask him about the implications of immersive storytelling for professional speakers and corporate communications professionals. Frank Rose, author of The Art of Immersion and correspondent for Wired Magazine, talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about how the web has changed the art of storytelling and the interactions between the web, advertising, games, movies, and television. Rose argues that when a new medium is introduced, whether it is the book, movies, or the web, there is always a period of exploration as to how storytelling, the author, and the audience will interact. While there have always been readers, viewers, and listeners who immerse themselves in good stories, the web allows this immersion to expand dramatically, partly because the audience can share reactions and insights with each other as well as becoming part of the creation of the story in ways that past media have not allowed. Rose chronicles these developments with specific examples and speculates on where storytelling on the web might be headed. The conversation closes with a brief discussion of the passing of Steve Jobs.
