One of the most significant features of the geopolitical landscape is an increasingly formidable emerging axis of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The members of this “axis of aggressors” are united in their determination to undermine the United States and counter its core interests. Though their methods may vary, these adversaries share a desire to sow chaos, erode the rule of law, and weaken the United States and its allies. From Putin's 2022 re-invasion of Ukraine — which instigated the largest war in Europe since World War II — to the Iran-backed October 7th massacre which sparked an ongoing multi-front war against Israel, and China's growing threats to Taiwan, America's adversaries are emboldened. The United States must work together with its unparalleled network of allies and partners to respond more effectively. To discuss the situations in Middle East, the Pacific, and Ukraine, as well as the path forward, FDD's Center on Military and Political Power (CMPP) hosts CMPP Chairman LTG (Ret.) From Putin to Qadhafi, from Mohammed bin Salman to Trump… our current era of Enduring Disorder is filled with many Tyrants and Tyrant-wannabes. But why do Tyrants tend to seek Disorder rather than Order? The answer appears to lie in Tyrants' Endless Quest for Regime Security. Dictators have a marked predilection to put their own desire to cling to power in the short-and medium-term above all other considerations – even if that means deliberately making their countries' economies and militaries inefficient or willfully spreading Disorder around the globe.     To discuss the deep connections between Tyranny and Disorder, we are joined by Marcel Dirsus, Jason's old Oxford chum, former Libya-Analysis LLC contractor, and author of ‘How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive'. Marcel is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University and a member of the Standing Expert Committee on Terrorism and Interior Security at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.    Jason and Marcel dig into the psychology of tyrannical leaders and the structural factors that push tyrants to behave as they do. They explore the concept of the ‘selectorate' — i.e. who really matters in a given society to keep the ruler in power.  They explain how tyrannies have a much smaller and more elite ‘selectorate' than democracies… this explains why pleasing these very few elites in the immediate term is the key variable required to keep dictators in power… and since those few pillars of regime support might flip at any moment, tyranny is actually an incredibly brittle form of government… and can actually collapse at any moment if its support pillars are removed    In the Ordering the Disorder section, Marcel and Jason urge democratic nations to realize the true extent of weakness prevalent in most dictatorships and target tyrants' henchmen to help create a more Ordered globe.    Twitter: @DisorderShow    Subscribe to our Substack: https://natoandtheged.substack.com/     Producer: George McDonagh  Exec Producer: Neil Fearn    Show Notes Links  What is the Selectorate and what are the implications of ‘Selectorate Theory' on how we understand international politics?  oxfordre.com/politics/display/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.001.0001/acrefore-9780190228637-e-293  Get Marcel's book at https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/marcel-dirsus/how-tyrants-fall/9781399809481/     But if you want to actually learn about Libya rather than simply reading some kooky stories that Marcel includes about Qadhafi, get Jason's book: https://globalenduringdisorder.com/     Read more about Marcel at https://www.economist.com/culture/2024/07/17/taking-on-the-global-brotherhood-of-despots   Visit his website https://www.marceldirsus.com/   Visit his substack https://thehundred.substack.com/   And for the reference to Nadav Safran's ‘Saudi Arabia: The Ceaseless Quest for Security': https://www.amazon.com/Saudi-Arabia-Ceaseless-Quest-Security/dp/0674789857   Learn more about your ad choices. Five years ago, almost to the exact day, Wes Moore came on a new upstart podcast and talked about what made him angry. Specifically, he talked about marijuana laws and how they disproportionately impacted communities of color. These laws ruined a lot of people's lives over the years. And they made a lot of people angry. But Wes stepped up. Since he was elected as The Governor of Maryland last year, he's put his money where his mouth was and he pushed it through. And now more than 175,000 Marylanders have had their criminal records expunged by his Executive Action. It's an amazing example of his commitment and follow through and why your host Paul Rieckhoff frequently refers to Maryland's Governor as potentially our future President. The financial war between Russia, with China's tacit backing on one side, and America and her NATO allies, on the other, has escalated rapidly. It appears that President Putin was thinking several steps ahead when he launched Russia's attack on Ukraine. We have seen sanctions fail. We have seen Russia achieve record export surpluses. We have seen the ruble become the strongest currency on the foreign exchanges. We are seeing the West enter a new round of European monetary inflation to pay everyone's energy bills. The euro, yen, and sterling are already collapsing — the dollar will be next. From Putin's point of view, so far, so good. Russia, has progressed her power over Asian nations, including populous India and Iran, and has persuaded Middle Eastern oil and gas producers that their future lies with Asian markets, not Europe. Russia is subsidizing Asia's industrial revolution with discounted energy. Thanks to the West's sanctions, Russia is on its way to confirming Halford Mackinder's predictions made over a century ago, that Russia is the true geopolitical center of the world. There is one piece in Putin's jigsaw yet to be put in place: a new currency system to protect Russia and her allies from an approaching western monetary crisis. Alasdair believes and will explain why he thinks Putin is now assembling a new gold-backed, multi-currency system by combining plans for a new Asian trade currency with his new Moscow World Standard for gold. Michael Wood will talk of Reyna Gold Corporation's emerging gold discovery in Mexico and Patrick is expected to comment on drill results that could launch a share price moonshot for Timberline Resources.

A psychopath in Russia just committed a war crime by invading Ukraine. Now he's a mass murderer as well. Today's episode examines whether the United States has standing in this fight, the role of NATO since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the bullshit narrative surrounding rising oil and gas prices that literally no one is getting right. We also destroy some current popular right wing talking points about Biden, fossil fuel and energy independence. And Max shares one of his favorite stories about onions and explains how it might be the key to saving us all. (Just go with it.) Dr. Jim Denison and Dr. Mark Turman discuss the Ukraine/Russian conflict, why Putin believes the invasion is justified, whether this conflict will devolve into World War III, what the Bible says about war, and four encouraging ways to pray for Ukraine.   Show notes: First, Dr. Jim Denison and Dr. Mark Turman unpack the recent developments in Ukraine. They express admiration for the Ukrainian president Zelensky and the heroic way that Ukraine is holding out against Russia. Then, Dr. Denison talks about the difference between a cold war, a hot war, and the means of conflict in a cyberwar. They also discuss the international backlash against Putin's move into Ukraine. Then, Dr. Denison relates a difficult reality: The United States is not as prepared for a cyberwar as Russia is. They discuss the risks posing U.S. citizens if that were to unfold.    They then delve into a discussion of the difference between “eastern” (namely, Russia and China) and “western” worldviews. Dr. Denison unpacks how the individualism of the west means that we prize persons above the “whole,” or the “state.” On the other hand, Putin's eastern perspective means that he is willing to sacrifice massive numbers to serve the interests of Russia. Dr. Denison shows how authoritarianism plays into this conflict and Putin's further interests in taking Ukraine.    At this point, Dr. Denison unpacks St. Augustine's just war theory with his famous seven justifications, such as self-defense, proportionality, justice, last resort, etc. From Putin's perspective, from the eastern mindset that serves Russia first above all else, this war meets all the qualifications, while we in the West would say it meets absolutely none of them. This shows how complex war and international politics are. In this context, Dr. Turman and Dr. Denison unfold his likely motivations in greater detail.    They then go off track to discuss a potential parallel: how Mexico could hypothetically use similar logic to Putin, but within the Western worldview, to regain portions of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and even southern California. This idea of war between the US and Mexico is entirely theoretical, but Dr. Denison covers some history; how America ultimately wronged Mexico by taking land in the 1800s, similar to how Putin is currently trying to take Ukraine. They follow this parallel for some time. Finally, Dr. Denison discusses the origins of the City of God where St. Augustine outlines the just war theory.    In conclusion, Dr. Denison provides applications for Christians in America. We can rest in the Lord, knowing that he has things under control. He also answers whether any Christians should join the Ukrainian defense. Then, he gives four ways to pray for Ukraine:   For God to be glorified and to redeem this war for his purposes For Putin's heart to change and for him to come to repentance  For miraculous deliverance for Ukraine and in defense of Ukraine For God to use our fear to turn to God, as an opportunity to turn to faith   And finally, Dr. Denison prays himself to close the podcast.    P.S. Jim's most pivotal book to date, The Coming Tsunami, is now available on Kindle, hardcover, and Audible.   Resources and further reading: Updates on Ukraine - Dr. Jim Denison, Denison Forum team “Just war and personal conflict: a Veterans Day reflection” - Dr. Jim Denison  The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century - George Friedman City of God - St. Augustine The Brookings Institute - Fiona Hill  About the hosts  Jim Denison, PhD, is an author, speaker, and the CEO of Denison Ministries, which is transforming 6.8 million lives through meaningful digital content. Whatever peace there is in Ukraine is the result of the Minsk agreements of 2015 signed by Ukraine, Ukrainian Separatists, France and Germany and endorsed by Russia. The Minsk accords gave the eastern region protection from attack and some measure of autonomy — but not independence. On the basis of the agreement, Russia moved out of the Donbas. However, the Ukrainian government has never implemented the agreements under which Russian troops left the border area. From Putin's view, by breaching these agreements, the Ukrainian Parliament (notably, over the objection of President Zelenski) is clearly daring Russia to go back into the Donbas. On the other hand, the Ukrainian separatists have never implemented the Minsk accords either. Even now, the separatists are holding Ukrainian hostages. So, the problem is every side gives lip service to the Minsk agreements, but it's all lip, no service. Learn more, read "7 Facts about Ukraine" at: https://www.gregpalast.com/7-facts-about-ukraine/
