While South Africa has some of the more progressive sexual, gender and reproductive health rights globally, and particularly in Africa, we still need the systems that should support those who are gender diverse to catch up. This week I'm speaking to two experts in this field, Elliot Kotze and Ronald Addinall. Both work in the field of mental health and have specialised in gender-affirming healthcare, and both share with me their own journeys around their gender identity. This is a particularly beautiful, honest and authentic conversation that I think is a must-listen no matter what your knowledge on the subject or who you identify as. my guests also share with me some invaluable advice for parents to help them understand and navigate gender identity. Ronald Addinall identifies as a Queer, Masculine of Centre, Gender Non-Binary human who is a clinical social worker, sexologist, activist and highly regarded academic. Elliott Kotze is a counselling psychologist and researcher with extensive experience in gender-affirming healthcare and queer sexual health. His work broadly focuses on improving the quality of life of queer and gender diverse folks through the strategic implementation of community-driven interventions. They are both based in Cape Town. This week's episode is sponsored by My Sexual Health – Credible Sexual Health Providers. Mysexualhealth.co.za is an online destination where you can find or become a Credible Sexual Health Provider. I have oodles of respect for Canada's Rach McBride for doing this interview. Rach is an incredible triathlete and a really educated and interesting person who you can talk to on so many levels, whether you want to chat triathlon, genetics, music or anything else. Rach also identifies as gender non-binary. That means they don't identify as male or female. Or put another way, they don't follow other people's ideas or stereotypes about how they should look or act, based on the sex they were assigned at birth. It is an emotional listen, it is a powerful episode, but I truly believe we can only understand more about other people by talking to them, allowing them to speak out and listening to their stories. I hope this helps Rach and so many others. One of my deep convictions is that a conversation about manhood is actually not just for men. Because how we live has an impact on all of those around us. Our children, our partners, our colleagues, our friends. So, we need many voices at the table when we talk about who we are and who we could be.This episode highlights the impact we can have on others, without even realising it.It is not a comfortable listening experience. But it is a deeply important one. My friend Jack grew up as a boy, but from very early on didn’t feel like the mould fit. Jack’s journey of embracing who they are is a powerful picture of both courage and pain. Jack shares experiences and statistics that are really troubling and unjust, and when I listen to stories like Jacks I want to do what I can to help create more acceptance and inclusion for people who are pushed to the edge of our society. This episode does contain some especially heavy content, including us touching on suicide. Please take care of yourself while listening and reach out to Lifeline or Beyond Blue if you need to talk to someone.Stories like this can change how we live. So make the space to listen well.(If you make it to the end of the episode you'll get the joy of hearing my 4 year old drop some classic child wisdom). Here are some of Jack's recommended instagram accounts to follow to learn more about gender non-binary experiences and perspectives:@alokvmenon@enbyspokenhistories @lavernecoxJoin the Man;Kind community through our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/257962575401298/Man;Kind podcast is presented by the Central Coast Council and developed by Lead by Story. All music by the super talented Josh Corkill.

Siufung Law is a genderqueer bodybuilder who competes in both local and international competitions.  He shares his gender and sexuality journey, and how his identity has evolved to where it is today. He is open and candid about being raised as a young girl in Chinese culture and the challenges he faced being at school where his dad was the Vice Principal. Siufung explains how he felt that he needed to suppress his sexuality and gender journey from his family whilst at school, but he was lucky to find a group of friends where he could be truly himself. Siufung did research in Gender Studies at university and this helped him to learn more about the labels, genderqueer and gender non-binary and he felt that these terms described him more than the term transgender which was how he was identifying at that time. Siufung explains the meaning of generqueer and the pronouns that he is happy to use. We discuss the lack of sex education in local Chinese schools and how Siufung would have benefited from more open discussions about topics of gender, sex and sexuality. Siufung reminds us that ‘we are always in a continuous process of becoming’ and he is enjoying his own journey of discovering his identity. He talks about HK laws surrounding changing gender and the requirements for full gender reassignment surgery to be able to do this. He goes on to explain how he competes as a female bodybuilder, due to the fact that he is still recognised as female by birth and is therefore considered as female in the professional bodybuilding world. Suifung shares his training schedule and diet tips for being an elite athlete and the joy he experiences from being a successful body builder. Suifung is a beautiful soul both inside and out and this podcast will warm your heart. If you can’t find a group to fit into, Siufung suggests you should ‘walk your own path and create one!’ Siufung’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/siufung_law/?hl=en A listener note: Some of the topics discussed in this podcast may be confronting to some listeners. The Wishing Dildo Part 1: It is said that the Wishing Dildo can grant any wish relating to sexuality or fertility, as long as that wish is consensual. Editor and collaborative storyteller Lara Milton joins Fay for the reading of part 2 of “Dangerous Company,” which follows the growing romance between Kalla and the dragon, Har. This section of the story delves into both eroticism as Kalla and Har get closer with each other and into conflict as Har struggles with her own draconic territorialism. The following, delightfully nerdy, discussion focuses on tabletop role playing games as writing inspiration and delves into the some of nitty-gritty details of writing, comparing and contrasting first person and third person perspectives in fiction. Dangerous Company: The last five dragon slayers died. Kalla is good at solving problems, but her skills will be tested as she embarks on her journey with the very dragon she is expected to kill disguised as her guide. Some interesting surprises are just around the corner…
