If you love the Maryland Terps, you know the recruiting work of longtime Assistant Coach Orlando "Bino" Ranson. Nestor has often told the 1989 story of drafting him Number One overall in a frigid Golden Ring Middle School gym when Bino was 11 years old on a Golden Ring Junior house league team. They finally sat down at Costas Inn to talk about it 36 years later... Tim Ecott, who is well-known as a journalist and writer, has, in his last several books, turned his attention to the history and culture of the Faroe Islands. High in the North Atlantic, half-way between Scotland and Iceland, the islands' inhabitants remain closely connected to the Viking settlers who established communities on Faroe over one thousand years ago. Tim's most recent book, Sigmundur and the Golden Ring (Sprotin, 2024), offers a compelling re-telling of the Faroese saga. It's a complex Viking revenge tragedy: two teenage cousins are wronged by an older distant relative; they set out to right those wrongs; but their success begs the question of who the story's hero might be. Mishlei 11:22 - Like a Golden Ring in the Snout of a Pigנֶזֶם זָהָב בְּאַף חֲזִיר אִשָּׁה יָפָה וְסָרַת טָעַם:This evening (6/13/22), in our final Monday Night Mishlei Shiur of the year, we learned a very straightforward pasuk - but such straightforwardness can make things deceptively nuanced. We ended up arriving at several different approaches. We concluded the shiur with a reflection on how our year of Monday Night Mishlei went, and - at the request of one of our regular participants - we talked about how everyone either can improve or has improved. When many of us think of ancient civilizations our minds may venture to Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia or India. But it turns out that there was a centre of trade right in the middle of the desert just south of Dubai that connects with each of these ancient civilizations called Saruq Al-Hadid, and it's believed to have existed as far back as the Iron Age 4,000 years ago. Of all the many artefacts found at Saruq Al-Hadid a tiny golden ring stood out. This golden ring, now a symbol of Emirati heritage and pride, inspired Expo 2020's logo, and even Al Wasl Plaza, the centrepiece of the site. In this episode, we'll tell the story of the communities that lived in Saruq Al-Hadid and how they helped create a ring that came to represent Expo 2020 Dubai. This podcast is by Expo 2020 Dubai and produced by Kerning Cultures Network.
The Big Bank Theory is a podcast about Exeter City FC. In this episode we're pleased to see Hartridge back and ready to apply the make up, and share our personal dilemmas.

Authors Between the Covers: What It Takes to Write Your Heart Out
A Note from Hope Katz Gibbs, producer, Inkandescent Radio — What an honor it is to feature this new book by Ellen Harper and Sam Barry, entitled: Always a Song: Singers, Songwriters, Sinners & Saints. A collection of stories from Ellen, a singer, and songwriter, who is the folk matriarch and mother to the Grammy-winning musician Ben Harper. Ellen shares vivid memories of growing up in Los Angeles through the 1960s among famous and small-town musicians raising Ben (pictured below) and the historic Folk Music Center. Jackson Browne says of the book: “An eloquent searching account of a life lived for truth, love, and music.” Roger McGuinn, leader of the Byrds, writes: Ellen Harper is folk music royalty, growing up with Pete Seeger and Joan Baez around the dinner table. Her story is heartrending and a pleasure to read." Jonathan Lethem, New York Times bestselling author of Chronic City and Motherless Brooklyn, says: "Ellen Harper's unique vantage as a red-diaper baby, folk connector, counterculture witness, and maven of family and community is matched by her memory, wit, and compassion." With the help of Sam, an author and musician who is a founding member of the book band The Rock Bottom Remainders (learn more about him below), readers take a ride through folk music history: Harper takes readers on an intimate journey through the folk music revival. The book spans a transformational time in music history and American culture. Covers historical events from the love-ins women's rights protests and the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the popularization of the sitar and the ukulele. Includes full-color photo insert. Ellen shares: "Growing up, an endless stream of musicians and artists came from across the country to my family's music store. Bess Lomax Hawes, Joan Baez, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGee—all the singers, organizers, guitar and banjo pickers and players, songwriters, painters, dancers, their husbands, wives, and children—we were all in it together. And we believed singing could change the world." Be sure to listen to our interview and watch the video on the April 2021 cover of BeInkandescent Health & Wellness magazine. Music lovers and history buffs will enjoy this rare invitation into a world of stories and songs that inspired folk music today. A must-read for lovers of music history and those nostalgic for the acoustic echo of the original folk music that influenced a generation. Harper's parents opened the legendary Folk Music Center in Claremont California as well as the revered folk music venue The Golden Ring. A perfect gift for people who are obsessed with folk music all things the 1960s learning about musical movements or California history. Great for those who loved Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan The Band Van Morrison Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock by Barney Hoskyns and Girls Like Us: Carole King Joni Mitchell Carly Simon—and the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller. 354 - Rafe Van Hoy On this episode of The Paul Leslie Hour we're joined by a remarkable singer, songwriter, musician and record producer: Rafe Van Hoy. Rafe has been a successful songwriter for four decades now. Some of the songs he wrote include the George Jones and Tammy Wynette classic "Golden Ring" as well as "What's Forever For" recorded by the duo "England Dan & John Ford Coley" as well ashy Michael Martin Murphey. Other artists to record his work would include Kenny Rogers, John Conlee, Brooks and Dunn, Reba McEntire, Isaac Hayes, Fleetwood Mac, the Oakridge Boys and Diana Ross. On this show we get to know Rafe Van Hoy quite well, and he plays a couple of songs for you too. It's an interesting, lighthearted and entertaining exchange and you are invited to it.
349 - Bobby Braddock It's the grand finale interview of 2019, the last one of this decade. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, with a man who has been called "arguably the greatest country songwriter of all time." Dolly Parton called him a "songwriter's songwriter." One of only a few people to be an inductee all three of these "halls" of fame: the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the national Songwriters Hall of Fame. My guest Bobby Braddock has been writing songs for more than 50 years and continues to this day. Some of the artists who have recorded his work would include George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Bill Anderson, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Paycheck, John Conlee, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Nancy Sinatra, George Strait, Toby Keith, Bill Currington, Joe Nichols and Blake Shelton. Some of his songs are almost as famous as their singers: "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "Golden Ring," and "I Wanna Talk About Me." It is a great honor to present an interview with songwriter, record producer, and author Bobby Braddock, a man called "The King of Tears," by Malcolm Gladwell. It's a fascinating interview from one of the greatest storytellers to pick up pen and paper.

In this episode, we're featuring a good old-fashioned duet album from Rhonda Vincent & Daryle Singletary: "American Grandstand" (2017). These two have been friends since the mid-90s when they were both labelmates at Giant Records - and this album has been years in the making. Now that the timing is right, the result is sublime. Singletary's baritone takes on a surprisingly good harmony vocal role on many of these songs, while Vincent's lead is pure and simple. These duets were recorded the old-fashioned way: both singers were in studio at the same time when the tracks were laid down, which leads to a wonderful result. Strong steel guitar and fiddles lead the listener through a collection of classic duet tunes, including the Jones/Wynette staple "Golden Ring", the Twitty/Lynn collaboration "After The Fire Is Gone", a surprisingly good "Above & Beyond (The Call Of Love)" from the pen of Harlan Howard and an original, "American Grandstand", written specifically for the album by Vincent is also a highlight. A deep knowledge and respect for the traditions of country music duet stylings from both singers make this one of the best releases of 2017.

Bobby Braddock has written more than a dozen #1 country hits, including standards such as Tammy Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” and George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” which is frequently ranked as the greatest country song of all time. George Jones began finding success with Braddock’s songs in the 1970s with hits such as “Nothing Ever Hurt Me (Half As Bad As Losing You)” and “Her Name Is…” Jones and his then-wife, Tammy Wynette, also scored with Bobby’s “We’re Not the Jet Set” and “Golden Ring,” while Tammy found solo success with “Womanhood” and “They Call It Making Love.” Other Braddock-penned hits from the 1970s include “I Believe the South is Gonna Rise Again,” which Tanya Tucker took to the Top 20, “Something to Brag About,” which Mary Kay Place and Willie Nelson took to the Top 10, and “Come On In,” which was a hit for Jerry Lee Lewis in 1978. Bobby continued to reach the #1 position in the 1980s (“I Feel Like Loving You Again” and “Faking Love” by T.G. Shepard), the 1990s (“Texas Tornado” and “Time Marches On” by Tracy Lawrence), and the 2000s (“I Wanna Talk About Me” by Toby Keith and “People Are Crazy” by Billy Currington). He earned the CMA's Song of the Year award in both 1980 and 1981. He was, at the time, the youngest person inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1981, and he was honored with the BMI Icon award in 2011. Additionally, he discovered Blake Shelton and produced or co-produced Shelton's first five albums. Braddock was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011, and was just inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015. He is the only living person to have written #1 country songs in five consecutive decades. His second memoir, entitled Bobby Braddock: A Life on Music Row will be released in the fall of 2015.
