Even tien minuten luisteren. Misjudging Minds: The Happiness Trap of the Fundamental Attribution Error
We live in a world obsessed with happiness, sold the promise that if we just work hard enough, think positively enough, or buy the right things, we'll finally feel complete. But this endless chase often leaves us feeling emptier than before. The more we run after happiness, the more it slips through our fingers, creating a quiet pressure to always be "okay" — even when we're not.In this episode, we step back and question the very idea of happiness as life's finish line. What if true fulfillment isn't about feeling good all the time, but about feeling fully alive — through the highs, the lows, and everything in between? We'll explore how accepting discomfort and embracing the full range of our emotions can free us from the trap of forced positivity and open the door to a deeper, more honest way of living. With love, MafeFor business inquiries: mafeanzuresbusiness@gmail.comCheckout my personal socials below https://mafeanzures.com/Go to https://beacons.ai/imissedme and checkout all of I Missed MeSign up to our membership and get access to monthly exclusive content patreon.com/ImissedmeOur Sponsors:* Check out Acorns: https://acorns.com/MAFEANZURES* Check out Ross: https://www.ross.com* Check out Ross: https://www.ross.com* Check out Shopify: https://shopify.com/mafeanzuresSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/i-missed-me/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
A recent research article titled “happiness depletes me,” found that trying to be happy (which is defined as striving to experience as much positive emotion as possible and avoid negative emotions) leads to decreased feelings of happiness, and increased levels of loneliness and low energy. The basic idea is that trying to deliberately change your thoughts and behaviour to be happy means you tend to overlook small naturally occurring moments of happiness. The effort leaves you drained and more likely to make poor decisions such as overspending or overeating, which in turn make you feel unhappy. Not a new idea – brought to prominence in a book in 2007 by Russ Harris called “The Happiness Trap” So if your life isn't going to be focused on finding happiness what should it be focused on? Happiness Trap suggests: Accepting that negative thoughts and emotions are natural and part of life, do don't fight against them Enjoy positive emotions when they do occur, and pay attention to the small things in life Live life by trying to act in accordance with your values. One way of identifying core values for you is to ask yourself how you would like other people to describe you in 3 words. The 3 words you choose probably reflect your values. Use these to guide how you live your life. Happiness will occur at times as a pleasant side-effect but life overall will be more worth living. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What makes a good life? For decades, psychologists have debated whether true fulfillment comes from happiness—a life of comfort and joy—or meaning—a life of purpose and impact. But what if there's a third way?University of Chicago psychology professor Shigehiro Oishi has spent his career studying happiness, meaning, and what truly brings people deep satisfaction. His new research suggests that some of the most fulfilled people don't prioritize either—they live psychologically rich lives, full of novelty, challenges, and transformative experiences. In this episode, Oishi explains why psychological richness might be the missing piece in our search for fulfillment.
We all experience negative thoughts—those persistent voices in our heads that seem to weigh us down. Research shows that over 80% of our thoughts are negative, and when we focus too much on them, they can lead to challenges like social anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Whether these thoughts are true or not, we often believe them, allowing them to dominate our emotions and lives, leaving us feeling deeply unhappy. But what if there was a better way to handle those pesky voices in our heads? In this episode of The Happier Life Project, we revisit one of the most popular and impactful conversations from our archives with the prestigious Dr. Russ Harris. Dr. Harris is the bestselling author of The Happiness Trap (along with eight other books), a doctor, therapist, world-renowned trainer in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and a consultant to the World Health Organization. His simple and effective exercises on YouTube, which help you master your mind, have collectively garnered an impressive 7.5 million views. In this insightful conversation, Dr. Russ challenges the conventional idea that negative thoughts are inherently bad and positive thoughts are always good. Instead, he introduces the ACT approach, which focuses on accepting your thoughts and learning to defuse from the unhelpful ones. Worrying, catastrophizing, obsessing, ruminating... Dr. Russ unpacks why getting caught up in these streams of unhelpful thoughts is actually your mind's way of trying to protect you. He also dives into why his approach can be so effective, and you'll even get the chance to try some simple yet powerful exercises during the next 40 minutes. Packed with insights and actionable advice, this conversation is a must-listen for anyone seeking to better navigate their inner world. Chapter 1:Summary of The Happiness Trap"The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris is based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which encourages individuals to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than avoiding or fighting them. Harris argues that the pursuit of happiness often leads to unhappiness because we become trapped in our thoughts, chasing after an idealized version of happiness instead of accepting our current experiences. The book presents several key concepts:1. Cognitive Defusion: This technique involves distancing oneself from negative thoughts, seeing them as separate from oneself rather than as absolute truths. This helps reduce their power and influence.2. Acceptance: Instead of trying to eliminate uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, the book advocates for accepting them as a natural part of life. This acceptance can lead to greater emotional flexibility.3. Mindfulness: Harris emphasizes the importance of being present and fully engaging in the moment, which can enhance overall well-being.4. Values Clarification: The book guides readers in identifying their core values and aligning their actions with these values, promoting a sense of purpose and fulfillment.5. Committed Action: Taking steps towards living a value-driven life, even in the presence of discomfort, is crucial for achieving personal goals and enhancing overall happiness.Overall, "The Happiness Trap" encourages readers to shift their perspective on happiness, recognizing that it is often a byproduct of living a meaningful life rather than a direct goal to strive for. By practicing acceptance, mindfulness, and committing to values-based actions, individuals can discover a deeper, more lasting sense of well-being.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Happiness Trap"The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris is a self-help book that introduces Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a psychological approach that emphasizes acceptance of difficult emotions, commitment to actions that enhance one's life, and mindfulness practices to improve mental well-being. While the book doesn't have a traditional plot or characters like a novel, it does contain key ideas, concepts, and themes that drive its message. Here are the essential points organized by key plot points, character development (in a metaphorical sense), and thematic ideas: Key Plot Points1. Understanding Happiness Myths: Harris starts by debunking common myths about happiness, such as the idea that happiness should be constant or that avoiding negative thoughts leads to happiness. This serves as a foundation for understanding how traditional approaches to happiness can be counterproductive.2. The Pain-Acceptance Paradox: The book introduces the concept that trying to avoid or eliminate discomfort often leads to greater suffering. Accepting painful thoughts and feelings is a crucial step towards genuine happiness.3. Mindfulness and Present Moment Awareness: Harris emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, teaching readers to focus on the present moment and to observe their thoughts without judgment as a practice for fostering acceptance.4. Values Clarification: A significant point in the book is helping readers identify and clarify their personal values. By determining what truly matters to them, readers can align their actions accordingly, leading to a more meaningful life.5. Defusion Techniques: The book outlines techniques for cognitive defusion—drawing a distinction between thoughts and reality, which allows individuals to lessen the impact of negative thoughts.6. Committed Action: Harris encourages taking committed action in alignment with one's values, even in the presence of difficult emotions. This involves setting goals and acting on them despite fears or discomfort. Character DevelopmentWhile "The...

Chapter 1: Summary of The Happiness Trap"The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris is a self-help book that introduces readers to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a psychological approach that emphasizes the importance of accepting thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them. The book challenges the common belief that happiness is the ultimate goal in life and illustrates why pursuing happiness can lead to unhappiness and dissatisfaction.Key concepts of the book include:1. Myth of Happiness: Harris discusses how societal pressures to be happy can create feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. He argues that happiness is not a constant state and that it's normal to experience discomfort and negative emotions.2. Acceptance: The book emphasizes the importance of accepting thoughts and feelings without judgment. By acknowledging unpleasant emotions instead of avoiding them, individuals can learn to cope more effectively.3. Mindfulness: Harris promotes mindfulness practices that help individuals become more aware of their thoughts and feelings. This awareness can lead to greater emotional regulation and clarity in decision-making.4. Values: The importance of identifying personal values is a central theme. By clarifying what truly matters to an individual, they can commit to actions that align with these values, leading to a more meaningful life.5. Committed Action: The final aspect of ACT discussed in the book is the importance of taking action based on one's values, even in the presence of discomfort. This involves setting goals and pursuing them despite obstacles.Overall, "The Happiness Trap" encourages readers to embrace life's challenges and uncertainties, find meaning in their experiences, and pursue a fulfilling life through acceptance, mindfulness, and value-driven actions.Chapter 2: The Theme of The Happiness Trap"The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris is focused on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and explores the misconceptions surrounding happiness and how individuals can pursue a more meaningful life. While the book is not a fiction narrative with traditional plot points, characters, and a storyline, it does present several key themes and ideas that are critical to understanding its message. Key Themes and Ideas:1. Happiness Myths:- The book debunks common myths about happiness, emphasizing that the pursuit of constant happiness can lead to unhappiness. Harris discusses how societal pressures and media representations skew our understanding of what a fulfilling life looks like.2. Acceptance Instead of Avoidance:- A major theme is the importance of accepting one's feelings and thoughts rather than trying to eliminate or avoid them. Acceptance is positioned as a crucial step toward emotional resilience.3. Mindfulness:- The practice of mindfulness is emphasized throughout the book, encouraging individuals to stay present and aware rather than becoming consumed by their thoughts and feelings. This practice plays a key role in fostering acceptance.4. Values Clarification:- Harris stresses the significance of identifying personal values. Understanding what truly matters to an individual enables better decision-making and aligns actions with those values, promoting a sense of fulfillment.5. Commitment to Action:- The book highlights the idea of committing to actions that align with one's values, even in the face of discomfort or fear. This commitment is essential for achieving a meaningful life.6. Cognitive Defusion:- The concept of cognitive defusion involves distancing oneself from negative thoughts and narratives. Instead of identifying with these thoughts, individuals learn to observe them without judgment. Character Development:While "The Happiness Trap" does not have...

In this episode, I reflect on my recent success finding high levels of happiness and self-confidence. I also discuss my new approach to dating and how I vet potential partners. Can people really be straightforward with their intentions? Do guys really know whether or not they want to date you as soon as they meet you? Setting boundaries and staying disciplined to your goals takes a level of focus that is not easy to maintain. It's actually tremendously uncomfortable to make difficult choices for yourself, especially when you care so much about other people. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) practitioner Kevin Menasco joins me on this episode to unpack the root causes of perfectionism and how to break through the barriers that get in the way of a creative practice. Perfectionism is something that most, if not all, creative people deal with, and it's something that Kevin sees in a lot of his clients. In our conversation, he describes how people typically cope with it and why even if it's not at a clinical level, it can still cause problems in pursing creativity. On a foundational level, Kevin suggests that we tap into the emotional or physical sensations that come up when we're attached to certain outcomes. Maybe you want to create a museum-worthy painting or a bestselling novel, and the gap between where you are now and that end goal gives you a knot in your stomach or causes your mind to spiral. That's usually enough of a signal to your brain that you're outside of your comfort zone and should stop. So, how do you push past that? Kevin shares tangible ways to give yourself a container for your creative practice that sets up opportunities for small wins. You're more likely to return to something that feels good, and consistency is a key part of overcoming perfectionism. We also discuss tools for people at the opposite end of the spectrum who don't have trouble getting started, but never feel like their work is truly finished or ready to be shared with the world.Resources mentioned:Work with Kevin: whitemountainocd.com The Happiness Trap by Russ HarrisInternational OCD Foundation Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform.Get in TouchSign up for the newsletter: kendyllhillegas.com/newsletter-sign-upWatch video episodes: youtube.com/kendyllhillegasFind me on Instagram: @kendyllhillegas

Happiness is the subject of thousands of articles, podcasts, and scientific studies. Yet all this focus on happiness doesn't seem to be making people any happier. In fact, the more they try to be happy, especially by fighting to get rid of bad feelings and cling to good ones, the more unhappy people often become. My guest would say that the first step in escaping this negative cycle is redefining what happiness even means — thinking of it not as a state of feeling good but of doing good. His name is Russ Harris and he's a therapist and the author of The Happiness Trap.Today on the show, Russ explains how struggling against difficult feelings and thoughts just makes them stronger — amplifying instead of diminishing stress, anxiety, depression, and self-consciousness — and how simply obeying your emotions doesn't work out any better. He then unpacks the alternative approach to happiness espoused by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. With ACT, you allow both hard and pleasant feelings to coexist, and unhook from the latter so that they no longer jerk you around. This allows you to focus on taking action on your values to create a meaningful, flourishing life, or in other words, real happiness.Resources Related to the EpisodeAoM Podcast #614: Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life With the Founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Steven HayesAoM Article: From Overwhelmed to Empowered — How Labeling Your Emotions Can Help You Take ControlConnect With Russ HarrisRuss' Website
