This week's EYE ON NPI is trendy and buzzy, it's Boréas Technologies' BOS1931 High-Efficiency Piezo Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/boreas/bos1931-high-efficiency-piezo-driver). This chip is a compact way to add powerful high-voltage piezo drive to any product, combining three chips: power supply, waveform generator and driver. With a complete I2C/I3C interface that you can connect to any microcontroller/processor it's the most advanced all-in-one piezo driver we've seen! Piezo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity) discs are multi-use devices that convert mechanical movement to electrical signal, and vice-versa. They're most often seen as electrical-to-mechanical converters such as piezo beepers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectric_speaker) where an AC signal, usually 3 to 6V peak-to-peak square wave, is applied across the disk. The frequency of the wave is translated into a sound frequency. It doesn't have the same fidelity as a magnetic speaker but its much thinner, less expensive for the component and driving circuitry, and for 2 to 4 KHz beeps it's just fine. Piezos can also be used the opposite way, where mechanical stress on the crystal is translated into an electrical signal. In this way it can be used as a switch or force sensor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectric_sensor), again usually a few microamperes' worth of current is generated. For these basic uses, your standard microcontroller pin, or at best an H-Bridge will work just fine: you can drive piezo's differentially to get more Vpp across the disc but essentially we're still talking about only a few Volts. There are some times when you want to make a piezo really 'loud' - that is, putting 100+ Volts across the crystal to generate a big mechanical response. This is often not for audible use cases, after all if you wanted to do that you'd just use a magnetic speaker (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1732) that can get to many many Watts of output efficiently. FYI there's two variants of the chip: the BOS1931 (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) and the BOS1921 (https://www.digikey.com/short/nnb0r29r). The '31 can only do piezo driving. The '21 can do sensing as well as driving, so it can be used for force-feedback products. In this particular EYE ON NPI we'll just be chatting about the driving capabilities of both. So, while we can do basic sensing/beeping with a few Volts - when we want to have significant motion for blasting sonar or moving fluid around we can only increase the movement by increasing the peak-to-peak voltage. Each piezo you buy will have a voltage rating - and you will need a boost converter to generate that peak-to-peak. For the BOS19 series of chips, you can get +-95V so 190Vpp max, which will drive any piezo you find, and you only need 3~5V input thanks to a built-in DC/DC boost converter. Boréas didn't stop there. Not only do you get a booster, but also a full waveform manager with I2C/I3C control. You can can fill up a FIFO buffer with waveform bytes to generate different shapes. There's a sine generator you can control with an envelope creator. Or, you can piece together waveform shapes for different pump/haptic behavior, giving you the customizability of a byte-wise waveform generator with the simplicity of a sine generator. They even have a Haptics Studio' to help you craft the waveform you want (https://www.boreas.ca/pages/haptic-studio). The BOS1931 (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) and the BOS1921 (https://www.digikey.com/short/nnb0r29r) come in two packages: an easy-to-layout-and-solder QFN and a tiny-and-advanced BGA. Both have the same core so just pick whether you need simplicity or small size. Since its a pretty serious boost converter and driver - the piezo connects directly to the output pins - you'll need to watch your layout. Check the datasheet for their recommended setup to make sure you don't have excessive power loss or EMI. IF you want to get started quickly, the BOS1921-KIT-B01 (https://www.digikey.com/short/v9hn8mcd) evaluation board will let you use their configuration software to quickly determine how your piezo actuator or sensor response to the waveform generator and booster before you start laying out the components on a prototype PCB. If you have some serious piezo-ing you need to get moving, the Boréas Technologies' BOS1931 High-Efficiency Piezo Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) can do everything from voltage generation, waveform shaping, and differential driving. And best of all it's in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment! Order today and DigiKey will pick and pack your order in an instant so that you can be vibin' with your fancy new piezo controller by tomorrow afternoon.

Oblivious Message Retrieval is designed to protect the privacy of users who retrieve messages from a bulletin board. Our work, HomeRun, stands out by providing unlinkability across multiple requests for the same recipient's address. Moreover, it does not impose a limit on the number of pertinent messages that can be received by a recipient, which thwarts "message balance exhaustion" attacks and enhances system usability. HomeRun also empowers servers to regularly delete the retrieved messages and the associated auxiliary data, which mitigates the constantly increasing computation costs and storage costs incurred by servers. Remarkably, none of the existing solutions offer all of these features collectively. There's a lot of ADHD news out in the internet. It's becoming a much more common and accepted diagnosis, which is fantastic when we're talking about advocacy. But what has been very misleading is this message that people with ADHD can't be focused long enough to be successful. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Vaughn Granger. Vaughn is an entrepreneur (one of the hardest words to spell in the English language) who specializes in men's clothing. He's also a loving husband, caring father, avid coach, and full on addict to the way businesses problems get solved. He also introduces some key "pillars" that once established have kept him functioning at a high level, despite the world pushing back against him. Vaughn is also just one of the coolest dudes I've gotten to meet, and it was a pleasure having him. We did run into a couple connection issues doing this interview mobile, but you'll have to tell me what you think of the edit. I'm trying a new thing to normalize quality on the whole file so that it doesn't sound jarring going back and forth. ( Instagram @VaughnGranger ) Let's get unconventional. What a blast, and a short interview to balance out the last long one. Check out more from Vaughn and try to implement those pillars in your own life. It can make a big difference just to see your every day through a different lens. Anyway, the mid-October rankings are as follows: 1. The United States, now led by New York, Oregon, and California. 2. The United Kingdom, with England at the top. 3. Australia, still run by New South Wales. 4. Canada, with Ontario taking back it's maple scented crown. 5. Germany, climbing back into the top 5. That's it for this week! Have a great weekend I'll see you all back here for the next episode! Vijay Kedar, co-founder and CEO of Tomorrow Health, was raised in a family of physicians, often joking that he was “pre-med coming out of the womb.” However, it wasn't until he took on managing his mother's care through stage III colorectal cancer and acute respiratory distress syndrome that the idea for Tomorrow Health was born. In this episode, Kedar speaks with host Steve Krupa about using technology to coordinate high-quality home-based care for patients and families who find securing such care increasingly difficult to navigate. Kedar also discusses how home-based care improves health outcomes, alleviates the administrative and healthcare burden for providers, and is often the most economical option for patients requiring long-term treatment. He says, “Treating a patient with the same conditions at home can be one-tenth the cost of doing so in a hospital-based setting and one-third the cost of doing so in a post-acute setting like a skilled nursing facility.” Kedar goes on to outline how Tomorrow Health's launch during the pandemic essentially changed how home-based care was ordered, delivered, and purchased to meet an ever-growing demand. Quantum Quote: “Passion and commitment. You got to be passionate about what you do and committed to accomplish what you're passionate about. That's how I live my life.” – Donovan Gordon How can we save money and help create a better future by transitioning from heating our buildings with fossil fuels to heating and cooling with clean and renewable resources? When we say that we're going to heat and cool our buildings from the earth, more often than not, people scratch their heads and question how it's possible to get 72 degrees from dirt. By running pipes into the ground and transferring the “heat beneath our feet” into our homes and other buildings, we can capture the constant temperature of the earth and use that ~50 degrees as the starting temperature to heat or cool. Then, using the same type of heat pump technologies as today's refrigerators and air conditioners to cool or heat. When we maximize the use of geothermal pipes, we improve comfort and reduce energy costs for almost seven generations. Imagine investing in a heating & cooling system that ensures that your kids and grandkids will have a safe, clean, efficient, and lost-cost heating, cooling and hot water system. Not only are you saving money, but you're also being part of creating a sustainable world. One-third of New York State's carbon emissions come from the heating systems of our buildings. Join us as we bring all the levers that we have to reach our carbon reduction goals of 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050. Donovan Gordon is the Director of Renewable Heating & Cooling at New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA). He leads New York State's efforts to develop markets that support clean, high-efficiency, renewable thermal systems, while conceptualizing, driving and implementing a portfolio of products to encourage and enable customers and partners to invest in low-carbon clean heating and cooling systems and with advancing New York's progress toward self-sustained markets. Donovan has a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from St. Francis College, and a Master in Business Administration from NYU, Stern School of Business. It works; this thing works. In geothermal, it's nothing new. Once you go down five to 10 feet, the temperature stays constant. It's a technology that is not a technology per se in that we're not inventing some gadget; we're just tapping into a natural resource that's there for the long haul and using it… We really need to do some education, but also, we need to reach a critical mass where it becomes common… We need to show the value to the homeowner of installing these types of technologies for their comfort, but also for the return and value that they can bring to their home. SuperNova #2. Take a look at this because geothermal is going to be around. People need to heat their buildings. And again, with climate change, they're going to need to cool their buildings as well, too. Right now, it's separated. You heat with fossil fuels in furnaces; you cool it with air conditioning that uses electricity. Now, this is an all-in-one system that provides heating, cooling, and domestic hot water. Every home needs one. Be part of that shift. You're helping your own future; this is for you. SuperNova #3. For anyone looking to install it, if you can, I would highly recommend that you do home energy efficiency, maintain your envelope insulation to reduce your thermal load, thereby reducing the size of the system that you need to put in. And if your load is lower, you use less energy and carbon. Because electricity is still going to be a while before it is 100% renewable, that also reduces the carbon footprint. Less is more in this case. Efficiency is the name of the game. Efficient buildings and efficient appliances, meaning heat pumps. The next generation of culinary artisans are changing up the industry. These artisans have a whole new approach to reaching and satisfying the next generation consumer. In this podcast we will explore chefs and artisans from around the world diving into their story and passion. In this episode of Chef AF, I chat with Andrew Gibson, Senior Manager at Energy Solutions about the California Instant Rebate Program and how it can lower operating costs with high efficiency equipment. Gibson oversees all of the food service outreach. He works directly with the market to help them understand rebates. Gibson trains the market on how rebates are beneficial, how they help the environment and how it can help the health and welfare of communities. I ask Gibson to explain how the program works and he says, “the California Instant Rebate Program is a midstream food service program. It just started last April and it's delivered really reliable and cost-effective savings to our customers that are purchasing food servers equipment. The nuts and bolts of the program is if you're a customer, if you need to buy food service equipment that is in one of those rebate qualified categories, you would go to wherever you would purchase your equipment and upon making that purchase at that moment you would be able to receive that rebate.” Gibson goes on to say it is like receiving a discount because it is an instant rebate. The customer does not have to fill out any paperwork to receive the rebate. Gibson talks about who would qualify for the rebate and shares, customers of SoCalGas , PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E and if you're in their territory as a non-residential customer you can receive those rebates. We talk about the benefit for food service businesses and Gibson says, “When you're looking at the overall progression of your restaurant and quality of food and what you're going to spend your money on a lot of times it's not going to go towards equipment. I mean if you can, you're going to keep your equipment until that thing absolutely is inoperable because you have so much more money and capital costs that need to be invested in other things to keep the daily processes of your unit working.” Gibson says when you are able to apply rebates it gives operators an opportunity to be more energy efficient, more productive, and the ability to benefit their community by reducing the carbon in the atmosphere. To hear more about the benefits of the California Instant Rebate Program, check out this episode of Chef AF “It's All Food” or you can listen at Spotify!

The next generation of culinary artisans are changing up the industry. These artisans have a whole new approach to reaching and satisfying the next generation consumer. In this podcast we will explore chefs and artisans from around the world diving into their story and passion. In this episode of Chef AF, Pepe talks with Josh Chanin, Energy Efficiency Consultant for California Instant Rebates to discuss how the California Instant Rebates Program works, why it is beneficial to commercial foodservice customers and their business, and who can qualify for these rebates. Chanin talks about working with utilities across the nation to help them run energy efficiency programs. He explains that utilities actually want their customers to save energy because it also saves the utility companies money in the long run since they don't have to build as much infrastructure to serve a growing customer base. Chanin shares that a lot of utilities are mandated by their public utilities commission to save energy. He says, “We help them do that by running things like rebate programs”.Chanin shares that the California foodservice instant rebates program is a California statewide program targeted specifically at commercial foodservice customers by allowing them to get rebates when purchasing any high efficiency, commercial foodservice equipment such as high efficiency fryers, convection ovens and steamers. Chanin talks about how the program works. Chanin shares that when commercial foodservice customers buy high efficiency, commercial foodservice equipment from their local or national food service equipment dealer or supplier, they are able to get pretty impactful rebates. Chanin shares that the rebates are offered at the time of purchase, making it an instant rebate as opposed to other standard rebate programs that arrive via mail and can take months to reach the customer. He says, “The instant rebates program is great because it allows you to get those rebates as a discount, and have a lower upfront cost when purchasing high efficiency equipment.”Chanin talks about how commercial customers can easily learn what products qualify for rebates and which California residents are eligible for rebates based on their zip code. Chanin says, “We cover almost all of the State of California.” Chanin shares that customers can visit the company's website, featuring a user-friendly search tab to look for equipment by name, manufacturer, model number or they can work directly with their equipment dealer to find the right products for them and check eligibility.Chanin talks about the benefits of high efficiency equipment. He says, “High efficiency equipment has a lot of benefits, especially for the small and medium sized businesses, not only do you get these great rebates, and you're able to save money on the purchase and save energy, which means saving money on your utility bills over the lifetime of your products.” Chanin talks about additional benefits of high efficiency equipment. Chanin shares that often those models have lower recovery times, which means that they can recover faster, such as when frozen food goes in the fryer, or when refrigerator doors are opened and closed again, they're able to get back to temperature faster than other models. Chanin adds, “High efficiency equipment is often name brand products that are higher quality and longer lasting.”Tune into the podcast to learn more from Chanin about the California Instant Rebates Program, on Chef AF “It's All Food” or you can listen at iTunes Now!Produced by Lisa Pepe
